Spirit of Flight Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 14, San Diego CA October 2009 INSIDE THIS ISSUE 2 The Flying Report 4 Fly-in/Camp-out Report 5 Movie Night 6 Open house flyer 8 Membership Renewal Form 9 Calendar of Events Young Eagle flights to resume on Saturday October 10th, to resume 2nd Saturday of each month schedule. Speaker for membership meeting, Saturday October 17th will be Susie Karsky, Air Traffic Manager at Brown Field control tower Spirit of Flight - page 1 Cover: One of the more unusual aircraft to visit Chapter 14 is Dan Francis’ Air Cam twin pusher. Photo by Bob Osborn. The Flying Report By Bob Osborn September 5 - Out of the past, Ed Bancroft, former Chapter Member of BD5 fame, stopped by for a visit to EAA Chapter 14, Brown Field. His BD5 has flown, a low flight down the runway by a test pilot but was underpowered so awaits more tweaking. Bob Johnson brought Tom Sarvis’ “new” Aeronca down from 1st Flight for display. It was flown in from Kentucky with no radio and still awaits installation of a wind generator but should be available for rent very soon. Tom is reportedly in Mexico retrieving the Cherokee 6 which had the landing gear smashed on landing. Bruce Hanna dropped in with his Thundergull while making circuits. He came also for Gary List’s luncheon of cold cuts, nachos, macaroni salad, cookies, and ice cream. Some 35 members and guests joined him. Although it was a warm day, Pete Grootendorst cranked up the “new” lawn mower and the edger recently donated by Paul Anton, to spruce up the area for next weekend’s fly in. Thanks Pete, and Paul for the work and donation. Jerry Boughner arrived in his Tiger Moth with an unusual whirring noise coming from the Jabaru 6. After lunch, and a couple hours of work on the accessory section, he buttoned it up and flew home with the same noise. On arriving at Ramona the noise was gone. Still a mystery…. September 12 - The annual Brown Field fly in/camp out (formerly the Ocotillo Wells fly in/camp out) gathered steam the previous week with Pete Grootendorst mowing and marking the area, positioning tie downs, and commencing general clean up. Jim MacKinnon and Gene Hubbard polished up hanger 2. Ryan had hanger 1 cleaned up and a new windsock installed. Joe Russo “the hat” supervised it all with Larry Rothrock’s back up. Friday Ron Schular, Roy VanDebogart, Paul Hanson, Jerry Boughner, Rene Rodriguez, Bob Osborn and Pat Long lounged about until Joe Russo wearing a startling straw hat appeared and got things moving. Two portable hangers were erected adjoining hanger 1 for lounging, barbecuing, and dining. Several campers arrived and set up camp south of our hanger row. Bob Johnson, Larry Rothrock, Ives Able, and John Watts among them. Reg Finch arrived with his stable of jets from the museum and located them along “old” Charlie. Saturday arrived with Kevin Roche preparing the pancake breakfast with a little help from John Watts, Ryan, Jesse Clark and Scott Cadwell. Fly in aircraft soon filled the ramp, directed by Pete Grootendorst and spread along Old Charlie. The most distant from a farm strip near Gary, IN, a Subaru powered Avid Flyer piloted by Tom West. Actually Tom had flown his Glassair back to Indiana where his brother lives and while there swapped it for the Avid Flyer, a large 350 diesel pickup and a boat trailer to haul the Avid back to Hemet. He made the trip to Indiana in the Glassair in one 10 hour flight, moving along over 200 mph. The Jennings family prepared another outstanding lunch for fly in attendees with Chef Dee supervising and husband Gale, daughter Lauren and friends assisting. Dayton Smith was presented with a Life Membership Award in EAA Chapter 14 by president Larry Rothrock for the many years Dayton has contributed to the Chapter and the furthering of aviation in the community. Dayton is a past president of Chapter 14, was a professor at South Western College, a flight instructor, and active in ground instruction, and other aviation activities in the community. The airshow commenced following lunch with the blistering fly by of Tyson McDowell in his L39 followed with a slow pass, gear and flaps down and landing and taxi to Old Charlie to join the jet line up. This inspired Reg Finch to go airborne in his Longeze and duplicate the passes burning a lot less gas. It takes gas to go fast…… Paul’s “Offshoot” biplane was also a hit. Other folks helped out and donated to this year’s camp out and perhaps Joe will enlighten us further. Dr. Gene Leonard donated a box of flash lights and batteries for the night hours. Gary List was involved, must have set up the flight simulator which was a hit with a Mexican family who came over to visit and enjoy the pedal planes and ice cream. You should have been there! With the fly-in/camp-out being billed as a Saturday/ Sunday event, festivities continued Saturday evening with a dinner of grilled pork tenderloin and chicken breast, salad and baked beans, prepared by Joe Bob Johnson with Tom Sarvis’ Aeronca Champ Spirit of Flight - page 2 Russo and enjoyed by some 25 or so diners. After dinner, Larry Rothrock directed us to the time (7:25) and position (high in the Southern sky) to view the passing (briefly) of the Iridium satellite. Kerry Powell pulled out his guitar and sang a few songs while Jesse Clark and his assistants erected a projection screen on the side of hangar three. Movies commenced at 8:30, with trailers of coming attractions, a Bugs Bunny cartoon, and the feature film, "Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines." September 19 - The lull after the storm, a relaxing Saturday at EAA Chapter 14, Brown Field after the fly in/camp out last weekend. President Larry Rothrock filling in for breakfast king Kevin Roche who is off to Reno for the races, opened the hangar and flipped the pancakes for the fly in breakfast with a little help from Jesse Clark and John Watts. Following breakfast, Larry opened the monthly membership meeting with Joe Russo leading the members in the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. The death of Dean Beddow, long time Chapter member, builder and pilot of a Turner T40, on Saturday 5 September was announced. A memorial service at Ft. Rosecrans, Tuesday 22 September, at 0900 was announced. Additionally a memorial will be held at Chapter 14 the general membership meeting, October 17th. A visitor, Kevin Platte, has an Air Bike kit and asked for information and assistance in completing and licensing it as a Light Sport Aircraft or in the experimental category. Ray Cote donated a pickup load of aluminum to the Chapter, picked up by Paul Hanson and Dennis Cullum on Thursday of the past week. Larry Faast flew in from Palomar in a very attractive light sport aircraft, a Tecnam Bravo N153TG, rental through Pacific Fliers. The Tecnam is a strutless, high wing, composite, powered with a Rotax. With 26 gallon gas capacity and cruise of 115 knots it is a nice cross country aircraft, economical and roomy for two. Former member Dan Francis brought his Air Cam twin N30581 in from Gillespie for show and tell and gave a member a ride for several touch and goes. With tandem open cockpits, twin Rotax “pushers”, it is a unique aircraft which Dan hopes to utilize for aerial photography. The take off and climb performance is impressive and slow landing characteristics, also. September 27 - A faithful few gathered at EAA’s Chapter 14 Saturday fly in luncheon for Gary List’s pasta, meat balls, salad, garlic bread, and ice cream. Not many fly ins, though Maurice Orange arrived early in his Lancair and departed early also. It wasn’t the heat, it was the competition. Ray Cote’s fly in barbecue at Lake Riverside was the main draw and a Cessna 170 fly in at Flabob drew other members. Dennis flew the RV3 to Lake Riverside and reported a nice turnout of 20-25 aircraft and over 100 attendance. Sky diving, many vendors, food, beer, (?) a good show, which Ray unfortunately missed as while working on the runway the day before, he overheated and ended up in the hospital. Dennis, Jerry Boughner in the Tiger Moth, Joe Pribilo in the Luscombe, John Todhunter in the Minicab were all fly in EAA 14 Chapter members at Lake Riverside. Mark Albert was scheduled to do his cross country to Flabob in the Cessna 170 for the fly in there and take Richard West laid on a luncheon of sloppy Joes, potato chips, macaroni salad, brownies, and ice cream following the meeting. San Diego Flight Museum Bruce Hanna and his Thundergull Offers free rides in our Warbirds to good students and " Make a Wish Foundation " qualified persons. We do fly overs , technical lectures and airshows . No report on that yet. The “club” 170 suffered a scraped wing tip in a ground loop last week and may not have been available. Gene Hubbard and Lista Duran have returned after a week in Reno, NV for the air races. Dennis also “made” Reno but not for the races. He had purchased a Lycoming 0290 and met the seller there. Paul Hanson, Bob Johnson, and Bob Osborn attended the memorial service for Dean Beddow at Fort Roscrans on Tuesday. A memorial is scheduled also for Dean at the general membership meeting in October, at the hangars. EAA CHAPTER 14 FLY, DRIVE, WALK-IN AND CAMP-OUT A GREAT SUCCESS!!! By Joe Russo As the first non-member aircraft [a good looking--are there any other kind--Navion] rolled down Taxiway Alpha, turned onto the ramp, then parked in space (expertly directed by Pete Grootendorst-thanks Pete) chapter president Larry Rothrock proclaimed the Fly, Drive, Walk-In and Camp-Out a success. Other aircraft would come onto our humble leasehold, including a couple of jets towed down by Reg Finch and an L-39 that actually taxied down, and two aircraft flown down from Hemet, but none were as exciting as the first one. The food and food service was terrific (Kevin thanks for breakfast, Jennings clan and friends thanks for a memorable lunch), the movie a complete success (thanks Jesse and thanks to your friend for making it a professional presentation) and I am told, with the exception of Larry pitching his tent behind a airplane that had not been moved in at least a year whose owner chose that particular day and time to start and run up his engine, the campers enjoyed a serene evening. Our portable hangers have never looked better thanks to Ron, Roy and the rest of the group who helped sand, finish and later erect them. Thanks to Paul Hanson the portable hangars were placed in the perfect location to catch a cool ocean breeze. I am sure I have forgotten to thank someone by name, so I apologize for that. Without the help of our chapter volunteers the venture would never have happened. Of course, no good deed goes unpunished and I have been asked to organize another. Do we want to do it again? If we do, when? Let me know.
