While works by Wisconsin Native artists can be rooted in tradition, it also has important things to say about the modern world and the future. Some Native Wisconsin artists take the traditional and lend it a new twist, for art is created in the present, not frozen in time. Going to the original source of art will always provide you with an experience – it’s where stories can be shared and mutual understandings grow. Here, you can learn from the artists themselves and celebrate Wisconsin’s history through its diverse culture. We encourage you to explore further. The Art of Upcycling is all about redesigning, re-imaging and repurposing items that would otherwise be thrown out. Maybe there are ways to create a purse out of the shirt, wrapping paper from the sheet music, or a sculpture from the lock. We live in a state that is rich in natural resources and promotes environmental-friendly communities. Upcycling is a unique and artistic way to preserve our resources by converting discarded materials into higher quality products like sculptures, jewelry, and clothing. Not to mention the added incentive of a positive environmental impact – items that would otherwise be tossed in landfills are recreated into useful products. Upcycling has been on the craft fair scene for decades as old paint tins are cut into petals for floral yard art and neckties are being sewn together to create skirts. Boutiques and shops have started specializing in upcycled goods that rival the quality of department stores but with an advantage of being one-of-a-kind, and as an added bonus they’re better for the environment!
