On Tap
Its the regular season opener for North Texas
as they travel to Rock Hill, S.C. to play in the
inaugural Winthrop Classic. The Mean Green
plays three teams in three days, starting with
the host school Winthrop on Friday night.
North Texas faces off with Rice on Saturday
and then closes out the tournament with a game
against Navy on Sunday afternoon. The Mean
Green is coming off its only exhitibtion game
before the regular season starts, which was a
111-65 rout of the Houston Jaguars.
The Coaches
Tina Slinker is in her 19th year of coaching
with an overall record of 227-269. Slinker has
the most win’s in North Texas women’s basketball history and the second most wins among
active coaches in the Sun Belt Conference.
Slinker has guided North Texas to four conference division crowns in the past nine seasons.
She has never faced Winthrop. The Eagles are
led by fourth-year head coach Bud Childers.
He has struggled in his time at Winthrop,
compiling a record of 22-67. Overall however
Childers has over 400 wins, as in 25 seasons
as a head coach he has a record of 409-306.
He coaches eight seasons at Louisville, and
compiled a record of 152-88.
The Last Time Out
DENTON (11/1/07) – Four players in double
figures led the Mean Green women’s basketball
team to a 111-65 exhibition victory against
the Houston Jaguars on Thursday night in the
Super Pit. The North Texas will take to the
road for its season opener on Friday, Nov. 9
against Winthrop in the Winthrop Classic. Jo
Hall led all scorers with 21 points. Brittney
James and Amber Jackson chipped in 20 and
19 points, respectively. Tricia Lee came off
the bench to score 16. All 12 dressed players saw action for the Mean Green, including
newcomers Kelli Buckley and Brittani Bailey.
Yari Escalera started at point guard and dished
out four assists in her debut after having to sit
out last year. Buckley was impressive in her
first appearance in a Mean Green uniform. She
dished out 12 assists and forced three steals.
The Mean Green took control of the game right
from the start, holding early leads of 13-0 and
24-2. The Mean Green shot 48 percent from the
field in the first half, posting a 55-23 halftime
lead. North Texas led by as many as 36 points
during the first half. North Texas held Houston
to 23.2 percent shooting in the first half and
34.4 percent for the entire game. The Mean
Green also forced 28 Jaguar turnovers.

Covering North Texas
Credentials
Working press credentials can be requested by contacting Steven Bartolotta (940-369-8329). Full-season and single-game passes will be mailed whenever possible. If not, they will be
left at the Will Call table located at Door D in the Super Pit.
Player Interviews
All interviews with North Texas players
must be arranged through the Media Relations Office. Players are available following prac-
tice once team activities have been completed. No interviews are allowed before practice. Please contact Steven Bartolotta for requests.
Weekly Media Luncheon
During the basketball season, North Texas
will conduct a weekly media luncheon every Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. at the North Texas Athletic Center. The luncheon will be held
in the team meeting room located on the first floor of the Athletic Center.
Post-Game Policies
The North Texas locker room is closed after home games. Coach Slinker and requested players will be available for interviews in the Media Room in The Super Pit.
The Series
North Texas has never faced Winthrop or Navy
before and only played Rice twice in its history.
The Mean Green has never before played in the
state of South Carolina until now. The series
with Rice is even at 1-1, but the two teams are
meeting for the first time since 1990. North
Texas last played the Owls on Jan. 2, 1990,
Tina Slinker’s first season, and were victorious
66-59 at the Super Pit. The first ever meeting
came in 1987 at Rice, a 75-69 Owl victory.
Tournament Time
North Texas is playing in its first regular season
tournament since the 2005 Wildcat Classic in
New Hampshire. The Mean Green has typically
enjoyed success in regular season tournaments,
especially the ones that are of the three-game
variety. North Texas has played in four previous
three-game tournaments and compiled a record
of 8-4.
Next Time It Counts
North Texas simply put crushed the Houston
Jaguars in its only tune-up before the regular
season. The Mean Green’s 111 points is a
record for most points but up by North Texas
in an exhibition game, surpassing the 105
scored against the Houston Jaguars in 1999.
Four players scored in double figures and
Kelli Buckley came off the bench to dish out
12 assists, which would be the second most
in school history had it been a regular season
game. The 111 points would have also ranked
as the second most points in school history.
Starting Fast
The month of November been quite prosperous
for North Texas over the past nine seasons.
The Mean Green is 30-11 in the month of
November since the start of the 1998-99
season. Digging deeper finds an even more
impressive number. Of the 30 wins that the
Mean Green has chalked up, 18 have been
away from the Super Pit.
An Early Start
November 9 marks the earliest start to a season
for North Texas in its history. Last season the
Mean Green played in the WNIT on Nov. 10,
which tied for the earliest start, but that will
be eclipsed by this seasons. The Mean Green
is also playing a school record eight games
month, making this the busiest November on
record for North Texas.
Three Games In Three Days
It has been sometime since North Texas played
three games in consecutive days. Not since Tina
Slinker’s first season, 1989-90, has the Mean
Green played three games in three days. North
Texas would certainly like to repeat the success
they had 18 years ago as the Mean Green swept
all three games at the Nevada Invitational en
route to a 3-0 start and a 16-win season.
Records To Watch
There are quite a few records to watch this
season as some North Texas players close in
throughout the year. Talicia Sanders is already
in the record books as she is 8th all-time in
rebounding and 5th in blocked shots. Sanders,
barring injury, has a chance to break the alltime record for rebounds. She enters the season
needing 169 rebounds to pass Empress Drane,
who set the mark in 2000. Erica Howard needs
only one more blocked shot to enter the top 10
all-time at North Texas as she sits with 44 for
her career. Sanetra Jackson has 44 3-pointers
Season Openers
North Texas is 19-12 all-time in season opening

snapped last season by Baylor. The Mean
Green is 7-8 when starting the season out away
from home. North Texas won its last season
opening game away from the Super Pit in 2003
against Indiana State. Under Tina Slinker North
Texas is 10-8 to start the season and since
1997-98 is 8-2 to begin the season.

for her career and could break into the top 10
all-time and Amber Jackson can continue to
inch her way closer to the 1,000 point club for
her career.
What It Will Take
Talicia Sanders is 169 rebounds away from
becoming the all-time leader at North Texas, so
barring injury she will give that record a run.
In her first three seasons Sanders have grabbed
202, 154, and 192 rebounds. If she averages 5.7
rebounds a game throughout the regular season
and the conference tournament, she will break
the record. That shouldn’t be a problem as she
has a career average of 6.4 rebounds a game.
Gunning For Another Division Crown
North Texas is going after its fifth conference
division championship in the past 10 years.
The Mean Green won the West Division title
in the Sun Belt Conference in 2005-06 and has
finished either first or second in its division in
seven of the past nine seasons.
3-Point Prowess
Over the past decade the Mean Green has
been deadly from behind the arc. Since 1997,
the Mean Green has recorded eight of the top

106 3-pointers and since the 2001-02 season
they have averaged 110 3-pointers a season.
Common Opponents
North Texas has no common opponents with
Navy and Winthrop outside this weekend’s
tournament. However North Texas and Rice
have three teams that they will each meet this
season. The two squads face off against UALR,
Marshall, and SMU this season. North Texas
plays the Trojans in Sun Belt competition
twice and will host SMU and Marshall in early
December.
On This Day
North Texas has never played on this date in
their history.
Magic Numbers For A Win
North Texas has reached 90 points 23 times
in the 19 years that Tina Slinker has been the
head coach. The Mean Green is 22-1 when
scoring 90 points or more under Slinker. Under
Slinker when reaching the 80 point mark the
Mean Green has a record of 70-11. That record
is even more dominant over the last decade as
North Texas is 50-1 in its past 50 games when
scoring 80 points or more. When scoring 70
points or more North Texas has a record of
138-48 under Coach Slinker.
The Returners
Talk about experience, the Mean Green has 10
letterwinners returning this season and all five
starters back from last year’s team. The North
Texas roster has nine upperclassmen this year,
compared to one season ago when the Mean

The Newcomers
Two new faces will be part of the Mean Green

Kelli Buckley join North Texas. Bailey is a very
versatile athlete who can provide North Texas
with youth and depth this season. Buckley,
a junior college transfer, polished her game
after high school and arrives in Denton with a
reputation as one of the best passers and will
bolster the Mean Green guards. Bailey averaged
a double-double, scoring 16 points and grabbing 11 rebounds a game to go along with four
blocked shots a contest in her senior season.
She was named the District 24-5A Defensive
Player of the Year. Bailey was a first-team
all-district and all-region selection her senior

in the Houston area to be selected to the Greater
Houston All-Stars. In her junior season, Bailey
averaged 12.8 points and 9.6 rebounds as she
was named to the District 24-5A first-team.

last season and dished out 5.8 assists. Buckley
was named to the District 26-5A first team her
senior season in high school.
No Place Like Home
North Texas has certainly enjoyed the friendly
confines of the Super Pit over the last nine
years. Since the 1998-99 season, North Texas
has a record of 79-27 at home which includes
two undefeated seasons. With a school-record
15 home games this season, the Mean Green

32 Years Of Basketball
The 2007-08 season marks the 32nd year
of North Texas women’s basketball. Since
the start of the program in 1976, the Mean
Green has won 369 games, made the NCAA
tournament in 1986, and had two WNIT
appearances. The most wins in a single season
came in 2001-02 when North Texas had 21
victories. Over the years North Texas has had
23 players named all-conference. Cherri Rapp
was the head coach of the Mean Green in its
first season in 1976 and is still the school’s alltime leader in winning percentage.
Championship Caliber
Tina Slinker brought two new coaches to
her staff this season with the additions of
Noel Johnson and Shannan Fears. Johnson
and Fears both bring with them a wealth of
playing and coaching experience, and a lot of
winning. Johnson played at Texas Tech and
was a member of the 1993 team that captured
the national championship. Fears, a former
player under Coach Slinker, was a member of
the 2001-02 team that won a school record 21
games.

Head Coach Tina Slinker
You would have to look hard to find a basketball coach at any level that has accomplished
as much as Tina Slinker has. Entering her 19th year as head coach at North Texas, she
has forged an amazing tradition at with the Mean Green and continued to move the
program forward each season.
Slinker notched her 200th career win against Stephen F. Austin on Nov. 18, 2005.
Slinker is second in career wins among active coaches in the Sun Belt Conference with
227. She has coached 16 all-conference players that includes a stretch of nine straight
years of having an all-conference player from 1998-2006.
She guided the Mean Green to its fourth division championship in the past eight years
and their second Sun Belt Conference Division title in five seasons in 2005-06. The 19
wins that North Texas notched last season were tied for the fourth most in school history. The 12-2 start was the best in school history and the 11 home wins were tied for
the second most in school history.
