The Mean Green is looking to end its four-game losing streak against the Cowgirls following a 73-61 loss to Valparaiso. Oklahoma State enters the game off to another quick start to the season at 8-0. Its the second straight year that Oklahoma State has been 8-0. The Cowgirls will be playing back-to-back games as they face off with TCU the night prior to arriving in Denton. Oklahoma State is ranked in the top 25 for the first time since 1996. The Coaches Tina Slinker is in her 19th year of coaching with an overall record of 232-275. Slinker has the most win’s in North Texas women’s basketball history and the second most wins among active coaches in the Sun Belt Conference. Slinker has guided North Texas to four conference division crowns in the past nine seasons. She has a record of 1-2 against Oklahoma State. The Cowgirls are led by third-year head coach Kurt Budke. He came to Stillwater after coaching at Louisiana Tech. He has compiled a record of 34-33 at Oklahoma State. His overall coaching record is 387-80. NORTH TEXAS PROBABLE STARTERS The Last Time Out VALPARAISO, Ind. (12/8/07) – Valparaiso held off a late second half rally by the North Texas women’s basketball to notch a 73-61 victory from the ARC. The Mean Green, down by as many as 22 points in the second half, cut the Valpo lead to six points at 65-59 on a Kelli Buckley 3-pointer with 2:31 remaining. Down 64-46 with seven minutes remaining, the Mean Green (5-6) began its comeback with a 15-1 run over the next five minutes to put the game within reach at six points. The Crusaders (3-5) answered though with a 3-pointer from Launa Hochstetler with two minutes left and then iced the game from the free throw line. “I was pleased with the way the girls kept fighting at the end but we can’t get down by so many points like that and comeback against a really good team at home,” said North Texas coach Tina Slinker. Valpo led wire-to-wire and burned North Texas early with its 3-point shooting. The Crusaders hit seven 3-pointers in the first half to take a 13-point lead of 40-27 to the break. Valpo extended its lead in the second half thanks to the hot shooting of Agnieszka Kulaga, who ended the game with a careerhigh 26 points. She scored nine of the first 11 points in the second half for the Crusaders. Jo Hall led NT with 16 points. Coach Slinker and requested players will be available for interviews in the Media Room in The Super Pit. The Series The two teams renew a rivalry that began in 1979. Oklahoma State leads the series with the Mean Green 9-1. The two teams last met in 2001 in the WNIT in Stillwater. That night the Cowgirls defeated the Mean Green 79-67 in the first post-season appearance for North Texas since advancing to the NCAA Tournament in 1986. This will be only the fourth visit to Denton for Oklahoma State and the first since 1989. The Mean Green is 1-2 against the Cowgirls in Denton. The only North Texas win in the series came in 1989 when the Mean Green knocked off Oklahoma State 75-65. OSU’s two wins in Denton came in 1979, a three point win, and in 1988, a 77-59 win. averaging just under three steals per game and had a career-high four steals against Valparaiso. In three games as a starter she has eight steals, in the previous eight games coming off the bench Buckley had the same total, eight steals. Three’s Company The trio of Amber Jackson, Brittney James, and Jo Hall has started to show how dangerous they are when clicking. The three combined to score 43 of the 61 North Texas points against Valparaiso. For the year the three are making up 57 percent of the North Texas offense. The three are also on a record pace of their own. Jackson is currently hitting over 53 percent of her shots which would be the third best single season shooting percentage in North Texas history. James is on pace to score the most points by a sophomore at North Texas since the 1993-94 season. Hall is going to shatter her career-highs in points, rebounds, field goals, assists, and steals. Second Chance North Texas continued its habit of getting off to a slow start this season as Valparaiso led by 13 points at the break, the seventh time this year that the Mean Green has trailed at the break. However the second half has been a different story. North Texas for the eighth time this year outscored Valpo in the second half, but could not make up all of the ground. The Mean Green is scoring 30 points a game in the first half, but that inches up in the second half to just over 35 points a game. Buckling Up Junior guard Kelli Buckley has turned into quite the productive player since moving into the starting lineup. Against Valparaiso she poured in a career-high nine points and hit three 3-pointers. Coming into the game she had only hit four 3-pointers through the first 10 games. Since moving into the starting lineup she has hit four 3-pointers in three games. Not only has her offensive output increased, her defense has been on the rise. As a starter Buckley is The Long Month Of December For the second straight season the Mean Green has lost its first three games in the month of December. As unpleasant as that may sound, North Texas recovered last season to win two of its final three games. Strange Streaks North Texas is trying to avoid a five-game losing streak against Oklahoma State, which it has only had nine of in the 19 years of the Tina Slinker era. The Mean Green has had only two previous seasons in which it has had both a five-game winning streak and a five-game losing streak in one year. During the 1980-81 North Texas Basketball On The Air For the sixth straight season all home and away North Texas basketball games can be heard on KNTU-FM (88.1) which broadcast at 100,000 watts from the North Texas campus and can be heard throughout the Dallas/Ft. Worth Region. In his sixth season of broadcasting and his fourth as the play-by-play voice of North Texas women’s basketball, Steven Bartolotta will broadcast all 29 regular season games. In addition the games will also be streamed online at www.kntu.com Phone Lines An ISDN line and phone line is available for radio stations wishing to broadcast. In addition wireless internet access is available at the Super Pit. www.MeanGreenSports.com A BB Off The Bench True freshman Brittani Bailey turned in her most complete performance of the season against Valparaiso. Bailey scored seven points, one shy of a career-high, a career-high seven rebounds, and had her third career blocked shots and second career steal. For the first time in her career she led the Mean Green in points off the bench and played a season-high 18 minutes. 2 2007-08 university of north texas women’s BASKETBALL North Texas Quick Facts Location........................ Shoot For Under 40 In another strange statistic this season the Mean Green is better off shooting under 40 percent from the floor this season as opposed to over. North Texas is 3-0 on the year when hitting between 35-40 percent of its shots but 1-3 when connecting on 41-46 percent on the year. North Texas vs. Ranked Opponents Oklahoma State the second ranked team of the year for the Mean Green and the ninth ranked opponent that North Texas will face in the last five years. The Mean Green has never defeated a Top 25 opponent in school history. The last time North Texas faced a team ranked at home was last season when No. 19 Middle Tennessee held off North Texas for a 70-56 win. Briefly North Texas continues to be the top rebounding team in the Sun Belt Conference at 43.5 boards a game. The Mean Green continues to lead the conference in boards despite having only one player in the top 0 in the league in Head-To-Head Oklahoma St. NT Points Per Game 86.2 65.6 Rebounds Per Game 48.1 43.5 FGM-A 248-529 285-722 FG% .469 .395 3-FGM-A 43-132 32-149 3-FG Per Game 5.3 2.9 3-Point % .326 .215 Assists Per Game 16.3 13.1 Turnovers Per Game 15.6 19.9 Steals Per Game 13.8 10.2 rebounding....Amber Jackson’s breakout season is now reaching new heights in the Sun Belt Conference. Jackson ranks 7th in the league in scoring at 14 points a game and 3rd in the conference in field goal percentage at 53.1 percent....Talicia Sanders needs only two more rebounds to have 600 for her career. With those two rebounds she will become only the sixth player in North Texas history to pull down 600 rebounds in a career. Approaching 200 Wins At Home 32 seasons of basketball at the Super Pit for the North Texas women’s basketball team has produced 196 wins. Over the past 10 seasons the Mean Green has averaged just over nine wins at the Super Pit. About Oklahoma State The Cowgirls are off to another perfect start to the season at 8-0 for the second straight year. They are ranked 25th in the nation, the first time they have been ranked in the top 25 since 1996. Oklahoma State is led by Dallas native Andrea Riley who is scoring a team-high 21 points a game. What It Will Take Talicia Sanders is 118 rebounds away from becoming the all-time leader at North Texas, so barring injury she will give that record a run. In her first three seasons Sanders has grabbed 202, 154, and 192 rebounds. If she averages 5.7 rebounds a game throughout the regular season and the conference tournament, she will break the record. That shouldn’t be a problem as she has a career average of 6.4 rebounds a game, although through the first 11 games she is only averaging 4.5 boards a game. www.MeanGreenSports.com Keep up with all the action of North Texas athletics by going to our official website and finding out all of the latest scores and stories. www.MeanGreenSports.com 3 North Texas Record When.... at home............................................ 3-2 on the road....................................... 1-3 neutral.............................................. 1-1 leading at the half............................ 3-0 trailing at the half............................. 1-6 tied at the half.................................. 1-0 overtime........................................... 0-0 more rebounds................................. 5-2 less rebounds................................... 0-4 same rebounds................................. 0-0 more turnovers................................. 0-2 less turnovers................................... 5-3 same turnovers................................. 0-1 It Scores: 50 and under.................................... 0-1 51-60................................................ 1-1 61-70................................................ 2-4 71-80................................................ 0-0 80+................................................... 2-0 The Opponent Scores: 50 and under.................................... 2-0 51-60................................................ 2-0 61-70................................................ 0-3 71-80................................................ 1-2 80+................................................... 0-1 It Shoots: under 35%........................................ 0-3 35-40%............................................ 3-0 41-46%............................................ 1-3 46-50%............................................ 0-0 51+%................................................ 1-0 The Opponent Shoots: under 35%........................................ 2-0 35-40%............................................ 2-1 41-46%............................................ 1-3 46-50%............................................ 0-1 51+%................................................ 0-1 Free Throws: Under 60%....................................... 2-3 60-69%............................................ 3-1 70-79%............................................ 0-2 80+%................................................ 0-0 Opponent Free Throws: Under 60%....................................... 1-1 60-69%............................................ 1-1 70-79%............................................ 1-4 80+%................................................ 2-0 www.MeanGreenSports.com 2007-08 university of north texas women’s basketball THE TINA SLINKER SHOW Every Monday night starting on December 3 you can catch the Tina Slinker show heard 88.1 FM KNTU.
