Biography: Harley-Davidson
A
look at how the legendary motorcycle company
was born and evolved through the 20th century.
In 1901 Milwaukee, boyhood friends William
S Harley and Arthur Davidson began building
a motorised bicycle from one of Harley’s blueprints. In
a 10x15 foot shed in the Davidson’s backyard, with the
words “Harley-Davidson Motor Company” scrawled on the
door, an American Icon was born.
Although the boys’ first motorcycle couldn’t make it up the
town’s modest hills, they were not deterred. Work immediately
began on an improved second generation model which
indeed was the first ‘real’ Harley-Davison, with a bigger engine
and looped frame design which lead to define what a modern
motorcycle would contain in the years to come.
In the following years, the company grew, but dozens of
other motorcycle competitiors sprung up (by 1911 there were
some 150 makes in the US).
World War I saw the debut of motorcycles in combat
service, and Harley-Davidson provided about 15,000
machines to the military forces during that war.
By 1920, Harley-Davidson was the largest motorcycle
manufacturer in the world. Their motorcycles were sold by
dealers in 67 countries.
With the Great depression of the 1930s, sales plummeted,
and Harley-Davidson turned to other production sources
to survive. But survive they did – one of only two American
motorcycle manufactures to do so. World War II was
instrumental in a significant upturn which continued after
the war.
The post-war years became tougher, but the company,
which had merged with other companies, grew steadily until
Japanese imports threatened to put it out of business in
the 1980s. But a small group of Harley-Davidson executives
bought the company and brought it roaring back to life.

Kangaroo Mob
O
ver one year we follow mob leader Black Spot and
kangaroo mum Madge with her two young joeys –
mischievous Sonny and tiny pouch-bound Alice.
After 15 years of drought, Canberra’s Eastern
Grey Kangaroos know that the parks and gardens of
Australia’s “bush capital” provide a reliable supply of the
juicy grass, but learning to be a street-smart urban ‘roo is
tough, with the kangaroos having to negotiate busy roads
and avoid cars and dogs.
Inevitably their incursion into human habitat causes
problems – damage to property and collisions with cars.
It’s costing millions and thousands of animals are killed
each year. The farmers complain that the ‘roos are eroding
farmland and damaging their fences.
The ACT Government holds an annual kangaroo
cull to reduce animal numbers to “sustainable levels”.
Confrontations make international news as the
situation arouses passions and polarises opinion. Are
the kangaroos pests that need to be eradicated? Or a
protected national icon to be saved at all costs?
A small team of ecologists, including Don Fletcher
and Claire Wimpenny, hope to provide some answers in
a 12-month study, which uses GPS collars and satellite
technology to track the kangaroos’ nocturnal movements.
Amidst the controversy that rages when people are
forced to share their backyards with a large wild animal, the
scientists discover surprising new behaviour: it appears that
the ‘roos are learning to live with people much better than
people are learning to live with the ‘roos.
Filmed over a year, Kangaroo Mob follows a
few remarkable urban ‘roos to provide a warm and
entertaining look at what happens when human
development encroaches and two very different species
are forced to co-exist.
