A Brief History Of Curtis Lumber…
Great Things Take Time
Established
1890
In 1822 Captain Isaac Henry Curtiss built a sawmill near
Ballston Spa, NY. In 1865 the property was sold to others, but
in 1890 it was back in the Curtis family, purchased by Elmer A.
Curtis (he dropped the second “s” as a waste of time). His son,
Kent Carlton Curtis, continued to operate the lumber and feed
business after his father’s death, and his son, Robert K. Curtis,
took over in the later 1940s. In 1952 Curtis Lumber Co. had nine
employees, and it was growing rapidly. Over the next 30 years,
the company added a hardware division, a truss manufacturing
facility, a large millwork operation, a rail siding, many new
buildings and eight branch yards.
The headquarters store, together with its subsidiary operations,
is now located at Curtis Industrial Park, off Route 67 in Ballston
Spa, NY. Robert Curtis’ son, Jay S. Curtis, purchased the
business from his father in 1992. Today, with 22 locations,
Curtis Lumber employs over 700, and serves many thousands
of homeowners, professional builders, and industrial customers
in New York, Northern Vermont, and beyond.

order and utilize our delivery vehicles so you don’t have to take time away from your busy day. Curtis has raised delivery service to a fine art. We are proud of our delivery
fleet of over 100 trucks. Our delivery fleet includes 74 flatbeds/vans, 10 tractor trailers and specialized truss trailers, 11 boom trucks, 3 ladder trucks and 16 truckmountable forklifts.

We are experts at estimating and we’ll be happy to quote from your blueprints or drawings. When you need an estimate on a house or a major renovation project, you’ll get

1) Select slope factor for given slope in table above.
2 ) Multiply Horizontal Span by “Slope Factor”.
EXAMPLE:
If Slope is 4 in 12 and rafter is 12'-6", than
sloping distance = 12.5 x 1.054 = 13.175' or 13'-2".
(Note: The over-all rafter length depends on the
length of the overhang).

11. Panel Grade – The term “grade” may refer to panel grade or veneer
grade. Panel grades are generally identified in terms of the veneer
grade used on the face and back of the panel (e.g., A-B, B-C, etc.) or
by a name suggesting the panel's intended end use (e.g., APA Rated
Sheathing, Underlayment, etc.)
12. Span Rating – Two numbers separated by a slash. The left-hand
number is the maximum recommended center-to-center spacing for
supports in inches when the panel is used for roof sheathing with long
dimension across supports. The right-hand number is the maximum
center-to-center spacing of supports in inches when the panel is used
for subflooring with the long dimension across supports. The Span
Rating on APA RATED STURD-I-FLOOR and APA RATED SIDING
panels appears as a single number. The Span Ratings for APA RATED
STURD-I-FLOOR panels, like those for APA RATED SHEATHING, are
based on application of the panel with the long dimension or strength
axis across three or more supports.
13. Tongue-and Groove – A system of jointing in which the rib or tongue
of one member fits into the groove of another. In Sturd-I-Floor panels,
tongue-and-groove edges eliminate the need for blocking beneath
panel edges for support.
14. Exposure Durability Classification – Exposure ratings for APA wood
structural panels may be Exterior, Exposure 1, Exposure 2, or Interior.
The classifications are based on the severity and duration of weather
and moisture exposure the panels are designed to withstand, and the
wood materials and adhesives used in manufacture.
15. Product Standard – An industry product manufacturing or
performance specification. Voluntary Product Standard PS1-95 for
Construction and Industrial Plywood was developed cooperatively by
the plywood industry and U.S. Department of Commerce. Voluntary
Product Standard PS2-92, Performance Standard for Wood-Based
Structural Use Panels, establishes performance criteria for specific
designated construction applications.

18. APA's Performance Rated Panel Standard – A standard applying to
panels used as APA RATED SHEATHING, APA RATED STURD-IFLOOR, and APA RATED SIDING. Panels manufactured to meet APA
performance standards must satisfy rigorous, exacting performance
criteria for the intended applications.
19. Siding Face Grade – Grade identification of siding face, based on
number or repairs and appearance characteristics.
10. Species Group Number – Classified according to strength and
stiffness under manufacturing standard PS 1 into Groups 1 through 5.
Group 1 woods are the strongest, Group 2 second strongest and so
on.

12. Panel Grade, Canadian Standard – Some APA panels are
manufactured to both U.S. and Canadian standards, and carry a dual
mark, as shown in the Rated Sheathing mark above. Other panels
may carry a single mark for either the U.S. or Canadian standard.
13. Panel Mark – Rating and end-use designation, Canadian standard. In
the Canadian span mark, the “R” signifies roofs and the “F” represents
subfloors.

but not a code requirement,(a) to provide installers with
a means of minimizing the potential for panel buckling.
Panel buckling may be an aesthetic or serviceability
issue but is not a structural deficiency. There is no
reason to expect this recommended space to be
maintained when the panel becomes acclimated. Gaps
that were initially present may have closed due to
normal moisture-related expansion. If the flatness of
sheathing or flooring panels is acceptable, APA would
generally recommend that only finish flooring, siding or
roofing be installed as planned regardless of whether
gaps are present.

resist the warping, twisting and shrinking that can

MICROLLAM
Microllam LVL beams work well in applications all
over the house. They can easily be built-up on site
to cut down on the heavy lifting associated with

means they’re very stable and they resist warping,
splitting and shrinking.

This is the highest bevel siding grade. All clear V.G. heart grade is sawn vertical grain (edge grain) and is kiln

Spacing for the siding should be laid out beforehand. The number
of board spaces between the soffit and bottom of the lowest piece
of siding at the foundation should be such that the overlap is as
per the table below. The wider the siding, the greater the overlap
can be.

lower edge. Each succeeding course overlaps the upper edge
of the previous one by 1 in. (25mm). Rabbeted patterns are selfspacing, but leave 1/8 in. (3mm) expansion clearance. Where

Bevel siding should be face nailed to studs with 11⁄4 in. (32mm)
penetration into solid wood using one ring shank nail per bearing
spaced at a maximum of 24 in (610mm) on center. Place nail just
above the overlap. Take care not to nail through the overlap of two
pieces (see table below).
Do not reduce the siding overlap recommendations given. To do so
could result in damage from wind-driven water.
Butt joints between boards should be staggered and made on
studs. Fit siding snugly to other pieces and to trim.

Finishing, Painting & Staining – Information For Cedar Siding
Discoloration
Cedar enjoys a well-deserved reputation as a wood that takes and holds
a range of finishes for extended periods. Nevertheless, the normal life of
a finish will be shortened by degradation and discoloration. The causes
of discoloration, though not in themselves a failure of the finish, often
require remedial treatment.

weeks. In sheltered areas of the building where the stain persists, it may
become darker with age and more difficult to remove. If washing with a
mild detergent solution does not work, a commercial cleaner may help.
Iron Stains
Dirt is the most benign cause of discoloration and not usually a problem.
A periodic cleaning with a mild detergent solution will usually restore the
surface finish.
Iron stains may appear in two forms: the reddish brown discoloration
caused by rust, and blue-black discoloration caused by the reaction of
iron from nails and other metal objects with extractives from the cedar.
To prevent these stains, use only hot-dipped galvanized aluminum or
stainless steel nails when fastening cedar.
Mildew
Water Stains
Mildew applies both to the fungus and to its staining effects on both the
finish and the wood. Mildew is a common cause of discoloration of paint,
solid-color stains and natural finishes. Restaining does not solve a
mildew problem. When it is time to refinish, clean off the mildew with a
commercial mildew-remover then refinish with a coating that contains an
effective mildewcide.

Extractives bleed that discolor the finish is usually caused by moisture.
To control stains caused by extractives bleed, moisture problems must be

Water stains often occur in combination with extractive bleed and mildew
growth. These stains can be difficult to remove. Scrubbing the wood with
an oxalic acid solution is sometimes effective.
Caution: Handle oxalic acid solution with care as it can be harmful.
Chalking is a property of the paint, not the cedar. It occurs when a paint
film weathers or deteriorates, releasing pigment particles that act like a
fine powder on the paint surface. Chalking is a common cause of fading
of tinted or colored paints.

Moisture Content
Wood shrinks and swells with change in moisture content. To minimize dimensional change after installation, install siding at a moisture
content that matches with local climate as closely as possible. If climate in a particular region causes wood to maintain 8% to 13%
moisture content annually, then the most ideal siding would be installed at a moisture content within that range, and the material would
be stored, stickered and protected for a week to ten days prior to application.
If unseasoned materials are used, the following considerations are suggested: 1) allow for shrinkage: 2) use as narrow a width as
possible; 3) use patterns which allow for some shrinkage (board and batten, channel rustic with an adequate tongue, board on board,
narrow bevel, etc.); 4) and in-place seasoning before application of finish or, 5) prestaining.
Priming
Often material which has been properly seasoned, stored and handled, will pick up moisture after installation and prior to painting.
Later, when the siding releases its moisture, joints may open up or buckling may occur.
Extra protection can be given to the siding by priming or prefinishing all sides, edges and ends after it has reached climatic balance
and before it is installed. Prefinishing can also minimize objectional unfinished lines where joints open up due to face width shrinkage.

Construction Details
Nails and Nailing
House construction features that will minimize water damage of
outside paint are: (a) Wide roof overhang, (b) wide flashing under
shingles at roof edges, (c) effective vapor barriers, (d) adequate
eave troughs and properly hung downspouts, (e) exhaust fans
to remove excessive moisture, and (f) adequate insulation and
ventilation of the attic. If these features are lacking in a new house,
persistent paint blistering and peeling may occur and the structure
then would best be finished with penetrating pigmented stains.
Good nails and nailing practices are a must in proper application of
wood siding. Nail locations are included under individual patterns.
However, the following data about nails will be very helpful in the
selection and use of the right nail for the right use.
The proper application and nailing of wood siding does much to
improve the appearance and durability of both wood and paint by
reducing the tendency of the siding to split, crack and cup with
changes in moisture content. When possible, depending on the
siding pattern, siding boards should be fastened so boards are
free to shrink and swell, thereby reducing the tensile stresses
that develop at fasteners.

REQUIREMENTS
The following requirements are essential for nails used on wood
siding.
1. Rust-resistant, preferably rust-proof. See “types of nails
recommended.”
2. Should not cause splitting even when driven near end or edge
of siding.
3. Should have adequate strength to avoid the need for pre-drilling.
4. Nails should be able to be driven easily and rapidly.
5. A nail should not emerge or “pop” at any time after being driven
flush with siding.
6. The nail head should not cause an unsightly visible pattern on
the sidewall.
7. Nail butt joints at the stud or blocking.
8. Nailing is preferred over stapling.
TYPES OF NAIL RECOMMENDED
1. Stainless Steel.
2. High Tensile Strength Aluminum Nail. This nail is corrosiveresistant and will not tend to discolor or deteriorate the wood
siding. It is an economical nail when the nail count per pound is
considered, although it is somewhat more expensive than the
common galvanized.
3. Galvanized Nail.
Hot-dipped galvanizing. Degree of coating protection varies.
Common iron nails or poor-quality galvanized nails corrode easily
and will cause unsightly staining of the wood and paint. When the
wood is to be left unfinished to weather or finished naturally with
light-colored penetrating stains or water-repellent preservatives,
only aluminum or stainless steel nails should be used.
NAIL PENETRATION AND SPACING
Suggested sizes are minimal and should be longer when siding is
installed over other than wood sheathing and/or sheathing and
studs. Recommended penetration into a solid wood base is 1-1/2",
1-1/4" with ring shank nails.
Vertical siding should be nailed to blocking or other wood framing
members not over 36" on center when face nailed, and 32" on
center when blind nailed.
Horizontal siding should be nailed to studs at 24" o.c. maximum
when applied over solid sheathing and 16" o.c. maximum when
applied without sheathing.
NAIL SHANKS
Many nails are smooth shanked and will loosen under extremes in
temperature changes. Increased holding power may be obtained by
using a ring-threaded or spiral-threaded nail shank. These
particular shanks are readily available.
NAIL POINTS
The most commonly used nail points included:
Blunt – reduces splitting.
Diamond – most commonly used.
Needle – tops in holding but tendency to cause splitting.
For the best possible holding power with the least splitting, a blunt
or medium diamond, and a blunt or medium needle with a ringthreaded shank are recommended.

The inherent water-resistance properties of DrainWrap are enhanced

• No less than 4" from the end of the board
• KLEER should be fastened to a solid, flat substrate
• Pre-drilling may be required when installing in low temperatures, or
when using a large fastener. A hole-size of one half the diameter of the
fastener should allow penetration without cracking

• KLEER is thermodynamic material; it responds to changes in
temperature by linear expansion with increased temperatures and
contraction with decreased temperatures
• Considering the temperature of the material, rather than the moisture
content, at the time of installation is the major difference between
working with KLEER and working with wood
• To minimize expansion and contraction, KLEER should be properly
fastened with the recommended nailing schedule
• For best results, join pieces in length using a bevel joint. Butt joints
should never be used to join pieces in length. Butt joints are acceptable
where expansion and contraction are not a factor, such as corners or
T-joints
• Kleer requires a temperature sensitive installation. A small gap may be
required to accommodate linear expansion and contraction. To
determine what size gap, it any, is required, refer to the chart below

Blowing Insulation is used in
residential and commercial
construction as a thermal and acoustical insulation. It is designed for
pneumatic installation in open areas and for retrofitting enclosed
construction assemblies. This product is noncombustible, noncorrosive and
odor free. In addition, TrueComfort won’t settle, contains no chemicals to
cause mildew and fungus growth, provides no sustenance for vermin,
contains no asbestos, won’t rot or decay and won’t absorb moisture.

Ventilation
To allow excess moisture vapor to escape,
allowances should be made for proper ventilation.
You should provide one square foot of vent area each 150 square feet of
ceiling floor area when there is no vapor retarder in the ceiling. If the ceiling
does have a vapor retarder, provide one square foot for each 300 square
feet of ceiling area. Ideally, 50 percent of the required ventilation should be
provided by vents located in the upper portion of the attic with the remaining
50 percent provided by eave vents. When insulating, do not cover eave or
other vent openings.

R-11 (RSI-1.9) fiber glass rolls in 48" and 60" widths with a
white flame-resistant polypropylene facing. It complies with
ASTM C 665. Type II, Class A, Category 1. This product is
intended for use in applications where the insulation will be
left exposed. It can be applied either half-wall or full wall.
(Half-wall is not recommended for hollow block walls: they
should be insulated full height.)

polyethylene, but is actually a nylonbased material. It has unusually high tensile strength where a 2-mil
sheet has equivalent strength to a 6-mil sheet of polyethylene. In
addition, MemBrain is not adversely affected by organic pollutants and
gases. The most unique quality of MemBrain is its ability to change its
water vapor permeance. MemBrain allows water vapor to pass through
when humidity is high either from seasonal change or moisture
intrusion. When humidity is low, MemBrain blocks the passage of
moisture so that it will not condense on cold surfaces within the
construction cavity. It is intended for use with unfaced fiber glass
insulation in wall and ceiling cavities.

1. Keyed Alike (KA) Keyed alike means key coded to same key number. This option provides "same key" convenience and
eliminates the need for multiple keys where numerous locks and access is needed.
2. Keyed Different (KD) Keyed different means that locks are keyed differently. Different sets of keys are required to unlock each
lock.
3. Protect-A-Lock (PK) Protect-a-lock featured door lockset allows the contractor's access to the house during construction, repair
or sale until such time that the home owner/occupant takes possession of property. All (PK) featured locksets come with 2
homeowner keys and 1 contractor key per order. Use of the home owner key will permanently lock out the contractor key.
4. Master Keyed (MK) In master keyed systems, master key can open all locks in the system although each lockset has its own
unique key. Master keyed locksets are ideal for permitting supervisory, contractors or emergency access. Use of the home owner
key will not lock out the master key. All master keyed locksets include 2 homeowner keys per lock and 1 master key per order.
5. Master keyed with Protect-A-Lock (PK) Master Keyed with Protect-a-lock feature provides 3 functions:
• Master key access (1 key/order)
• Builder/contractor key access (1 key/order)
• Homeowner/occupant key access (2keys/lock)
Use of the homeowner key will permanently lockout the builder keys while master key will not be locked out.
