GUIDELINES FOR THE BURNING OF ALTAR CANDLES
The following information is issued by Charles Farris Ltd. If followed, the guidelines will help you obtain the best performance,
and satisfaction, from the products you have been supplied.
1. Candles should be stored horizontally on a flat surface. They should not be subjected to direct sunlight or extremes of
temperature, and it is recommended that they are used within two years of purchase.
2. When setting up a new candle, ensure that it is firmly held in an upright position, and the holder is placed on a stable surface.
3. Before lighting a new candle, ensure the wick is not twisted and is standing upright, in line with the candle. The exposed
wick should be trimmed, if necessary, to approximately ½”.
4. A Charles Farris lighting taper should be used to light the candle, exposing the full wick to the taper flame. The use of matches
or paper should be avoided, as they can drop extraneous material into the candle which can cause serious burning problems.
5. When relighting a candle, ensure the burning pool is clear of any foreign materials; and take care not to move the wick from
its previous burning shape.
6. If a candle is burning with an abnormally low flame, extinguish it and when the wax has cooled pare down the top of the
candle until sufficient wick is exposed.
7. To extinguish a candle do not blow directly onto the molten wax pool, or wax may splash out. A candle snuffer should be
used but take care not to damage the wick or the lip of the wax pool.
8. Excessive draughts will cause some candles to gutter, and in many environments these draughts are unavoidable. To control
guttering in these circumstances, Charles Farris Ltd market a range of candle caps. These are available for specific candle
types and sizes. Charles Farris Ltd, or their representative, should be contacted directly if candle caps are required.
9. Hot water should be used to remove wax from metal, glass or ceramic holders.
10. If candles are burnt in confined spaces, there should be at least two feet vertical clearance between the flame and any surface
or material.
11. EXTREME CARE MUST BE TAKEN AT ALL TIMES TO ENSURE THAT CANDLES ARE BURNT CORRECTLY AND IN
SAFE SURROUNDINGS.
12. NEVER LEAVE BURNING CANDLES UNSUPERVISED.

Guaranteed 25% Beeswax Candles
All sizes also available in unbleached 25% beeswax for requiem use.
The hand making of all Charles Farris “made to order candles” are guaranteed to contain
25% beeswax and are made in the following, time honoured, lengthy and highly skilled fashion.
On occasion this can mean a 3-4 week production time
First the wick is dipped and then slowly, layer upon layer, of the wax is carefully poured
by hand over the wick. During this process the candle is regularly reversed to produce
an even diameter along its entire length.
The wax needs to remain at a constant temperature to prevent irregularities and maintain a pure
velvety appearance and each layer must be set before the next is poured. This process is called
“casting” and it takes 32 casts to produce a 1” candle. Once the desired diameter is reached the
candle is then hand cut and finished to size.
Although the cost is higher, this method does result in the finest, longest burning candles being
produced and therefore represents excellent value.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS
1. All items strictly net.
2. All accounts are due for payment 30 days after date of invoice. In the event of failure to pay on the
date the company shall be entitled to make a charge at the rate of 4% per annum above the Bank
of England base rate on the sums not paid from the due date until the actual date of payment.
3. The company reserves the right to withdraw credit facilities from customers who do not settle
their accounts in accordance with the terms and conditions of trade.
4. Orders are accepted subject to availability of stock.
5. (a) Standard handling and carriage charge per order (excluding VAT) is £7.50. This applies to
Mainland UK. The rate for Northern Ireland, Isle of Wight, Channel Islands, and Offshore UK are
subject to a carrier surcharge and this will be charged at cost. A Carrier surcharge may also be levied
for outlying areas at cost.
(b) The handling, packing and carriage charge for Mainland UK and IoW will be waived where
net invoice value (excluding VAT) is in excess £100.00. For Northern Ireland, Channel Islands
and Offshore UK carriage will be charged at cost.
6. Goods will be invoiced at prices ruling at the time of despatch.
7. The Company’s policy is constantly to improve its products. The Company therefore reserves the
right to change specifications, colours and prices at any time.
8. VAT at the appropriate rate applies to all products sold in Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
9. All export orders outside the European Union are exempt from VAT, but freight and documentation
charges will be charged at cost.
10.(a) Candles:- Delivery is usually within seven days from receipt of order. Please advise us if
goods have not been delivered after twenty-one days from the date of ordering. Despatch can
occasionally be delayed, particularly prior to Christmas and Easter, when goods are being made
to order, or when unexpected popularity depletes stocks of some items. Goods required urgently
should be specified at the time of ordering.
10.(b) Silver/Brass etc:- Whilst we keep some Non-Candle items in stock, many are made to order
to ensure you receive them in pristine condition.
11.Returned goods can only be accepted if previously authorised by Charles Farris Ltd. and are
subject to a 15% restocking charge if ordered by the customer incorrectly.
12. The Company reserves the right to recover any costs incurred should litigation be necessary in
order to obtain monies legitimately owed to the Company.
13. Orders placed via our web site are subject to our international terms and conditions which are
published in full on the site: www.charlesfarris.co.uk
14. Goods should be signed for “unexamined” if not checked on receipt. Any evidence of damage
must be pointed out to the carrier and marked on the carrier’s ticket accordingly. Charles Farris
Ltd. may not accept liability for damage unless notified within 3 days of receipt of goods.
