Children, Adolescents, and Spirituality edited by Marian de Souza and Winifred Wing Han Lamb Fu Jen Series on Religion, Science, and Culture Number - 3 From the point of view of the human species, we can identify three key stages in this process of becoming – cosmology and the beginning of the universe with the big bang, the origin of life on the planet earth and the emergence of consciousness and rationality in homo sapiens. These are the themes which are considered in the essays in this volume. There are a variety of papers from Christian theologians and philosophers and from those who examine these issues from a Chinese religious or Chinese philosophical background. The volume begins with four papers by John Haught of Georgetown University Washington, looking at ‘nature’, ‘cosmic purpose and science’, ‘Darwin and divine providence’, and ‘theology, ecology and cosmology’. Form there the book is divided into three sections: ‘Cosmology’, ‘Life’ and on ‘Human Life’. Contributors include: John Haught of Washington, USA; Tomas Berg of New York, USA; Kang, Phee-Seng, from Hong Kong, Shih Chao-Hwei, John Chuang and Frank Budenholzer, from Taiwan. And there was evening and there was morning on the sixth day. And thus the heavens were finished and all the host of them’ (Genesis 1:31 – 2:1). Thus the Hebrew Scriptures, the basis of the faith of the three great monotheistic traditions, describe a process in which the cosmos came to be. However, the fact of process in the becoming of the cosmos was also a bedrock of traditional Chinese thought and now has become the central tenet of the scientific picture of the cosmos. edited by Teresa Wong Yai-Chow, Wen Hsiang Chen and Frank Budenholzer SVD 2008 - 2009 www.atfpress.com Fu Jen Series on Religion, Science, and Culture Number - 3 The Cosmos in Becoming edited edited by by Teresa Teresa Wong Wong Yai-Chow Yai-Chow Wen Wen Hsiang Hsiang Chen Chen and and Frank Frank Budenholzer Budenholzer SVD SVD 9 781920 691943 > www.atfpress.com 1 Esther and the End of ‘Final Solutions’: Theodicy and Hebrew Biblical Narrative By Richard Treloar ISBN 9781920691868 Paperback 15 x 21 cm 477 pages Release Date: September 2008 ATF Dissertation Series Number 3 Aus $44 ‘Richard Treloar’s study of the Book of Esther is remarkable in bringing together successfully a number of streams of hermeneutics and theology. Written with elegance and clarity, it shows an extraordinary breadth of reading and awareness of other disciplines that impinge on biblical studies. Esther is interpreted as an example of ‘survival literature’ and the issue of theodicy weaves its way throughout the book, particularly in relation to the ‘divine obscurity’ of the text. It is a book to be read by systematic theologians, as well as by biblical exegetes, and anyone interested in how to interpret narrative within a contemporary philosophical and theological framework.’ Rev Dr Dorothy Lee, Trinity Theological College, Melbourne Richard Treloar is a priest in the Anglican Church of Australia, currently serving as Vicar of Christ Church, South Yarra, in the city of Melbourne. Prior to this appointment he was Chaplain of Trinity College, the University of Melbourne, teaching theology in the ecumenical consortium, the Melbourne College of Divinity, of which he continues to be an Honorary Research Associate. His Phd thesis was awarded by Monash University in 203. Richard’s research in the field of biblical hermeneutics has been published in both Australian and international refereed journals and edited volumes. He represents the Anglican and Uniting Churches of Australia on the World Council of Churches Faith and Order Standing Commission. 2 Beyond the Word of a Woman Recovering the Bodies of the Syrophoenician Women By Alan H Cadwallader ISBN 9781920691851 Paperback 15 x 21 cm 370 pages Release Date: September 2008 ATF Biblical Series Number 1 Aus $44.00 ‘The work shows significant independence of thought on the part of the researcher together with a very comprehensive knowledge of the literature and ability to engage with it critically. It was a pleasure to read with it very careful attention to nuanced scholarship, its clarity of expression and its very thorough exploration of a gospel pericope. It provides insights which will be the subject of dialogue for a long time to come in Markan feminist scholarship.’ Dr Elaine Wainwright, University of Auckland, New Zealand Alan Cadwallader lectures in New Testament Studies within the School of Theology, Flinders University, Adelaide. 3 Validating Violence–Violating Scripture? Edited by William Emilsen and John Squires ISBN 9781920691899 Paperback 260 pages Release Date: October 2008 PACT Series Number 3 Aus $33 In this book scholars from Jewish, Christian and Muslim traditions explore violence in religious scriptures. In twelve chapters, they grapple with the problem of how to deal with the phenomenon of violence when it appears within the scriptures and traditions of particular religious faiths. The writers identify the violent language, imagery, story and ideology which reside deep within these texts. Some chapters offer detailed exegetical examination of key passages, whilst other chapters offer theological explorations of the issue. The volume ends with a conclusion which offers some general observations on the hermeneutical strategies employed in dealing with these texts. William Emilsen is a Senior Academic Associate in the School of Theology at Charles Sturt University, on the Parramatta Campus (United Theological College). He has written on Mahatma Gandhi and on the history of the Uniting Church and edits the journal Uniting Church Studies. Such identifications have been common in the Western Latin Church since the time of Pope Gregory the Great in the sixth century. It was as late as 1969 that the liturgical calendar listed the Magdalene as a separate individual. In the Eastern or Greek Church such identifications were never made. Mary Magdalene was never mistaken for other figures. The old tradition of the Western Church called Mary Magdalene apostola apostolorum, meaning ‘apostle of the apostles’, or the first apostle. In the Eastern Church she was called isapostola, meaning ‘equal to an apostle’. Both traditional titles reflect the fact that the risen Christ showed himself first to Mary Magdalene and sent her to tell the joyful news to others. In the four canonical gospels of the New Testament, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, dating from the years 70-100 CE, there are only twelve verses that mention Mary Magdalene. She is always referred to with the title ‘the woman from Magdala’. The figure of Mary Magdalene appears more often in the apocryphal Gospels that date from the years 100-400 CE. An old tradition of the Eastern Church goes back to the second century. It tells the story of her meeting with the emperor Tiberius in Rome and the miracle of the egg changing colour. This started the tradition of making colourful Easter eggs. 8 Tradition related that she became an apostle in Rome and Italy until the time when Saint Paul was executed. She then joined the apostle John and our Lord’s mother, Mary, in Ephesus and worked with John in Asia Minor. Then, there is the other story that Magdalene was engaged to John and married him at the wedding in Cana (John 2:1-11). Since the twelfth century there has been the legend of the Holy Grail, the chalice used at the Last Supper. It was supposedly brought by Joseph of Arimathea to Europe, and this story was then mixed up with that of Mary Magdalene. Today, there are at least twenty-five fictional biographies of the life of Mary Magdalene in English. This is an intriguing book- by Mary, so we the reader is led to believe, telling her story, and how into is life long interweaving of her life with that of the first apostles and a life which is interwoven into the life of Christ up to his death. Mary's story will captivate the reader as she details the twists and turns in her life and those around her. Each page brings another twist, another element to story of her life, and the love of her life. Martin Suhartono SJ is Jesuit Priest who undertook post graduate studies at the Biblicum in Rome and his PhD at the University of Cambridge, in the United Kingdom. In this new collection of sermons, Elaine Farmer explores the se and other questions of what it means to be human what God's view of all this might be. 'In these heartfelt sermons The Reverend Elaine Farmer draws from the rich tradition of scripture, theology and literature to create words about 'the Word' that inspire challenge and nourish. Are the artificial reproductive technologies helpful or hazardous? Should human embryos ever be used for research? How do we cope with people who are mentally ill? Is someone in a persistent vegetative state still alive? How should we treat those with dementia? Questions like these are all around us. They affect ordinary people, who often feel ill-equipped to respond to them. No one seems to have adequate answers. Do Christians have answers? In this book, aimed at the general reader, Professor Gareth Jones considers a range of topics ranging all the way from early embryos through to old age. While he concentrates on bioethical issues in the West, he is deeply concerned at the huge disparity in mortality and quality of life in different parts of the world. He also asks how Christians can best contribute to the discussion of bioethical issues within pluralist societies. Professor Jones is never afraid to face unpalatable issues head-on, and provide ways forward. He invites people to enter debates that we avoid at our peril. The quality of the formation of young people in their essential humanity impacts profoundly on the calibre of every community, society and nation. The messages and quotations that Chris Gleeson has so carefully collated and crafted in this delightful book extend beyond teachers, and encourage the wider community to treasure and value teachers. Chris provides inspiration and hope for all teachers in their efforts to assist the learning and facilitate the personal growth of their students. As I often tell my own school community, essentially we teach who we are. This book will nurture the spirits and souls of teachers, not only on the good days when they know on a deep level that they are making a positive difference for their students, but also on the dark days, which all teachers experience, when it seems to hard and their efforts seem to bear no fruit of any worth. We need to support and sustain our teachers in this way. I like to give beginning teachers, who have gained formal registration, an inspiring book on teaching which they will hopefully treasure throughout their career. Chris' book will go to the top of my list of such books. It is a privilege to recommend this book, written by an eminent teacher, colleague and friend, for whom I have such profound respect.' - Dr Leoni Degenhardt, Principal, Loreto Normanhurst, Sydney. Topics include: importance of science and religion, achievements and limitations of the methods of science, the method of religion, birth of the modern cosmology, modern scholarship of the Book of Genesis, the stars as instruments of creation, the anthropic universe and the resurrection. This book includes a CD with over 200 power point presentations divided into chapters corresponding to chapters in the book which can be used by teachers and students. 16 Bible for Sinners By Christopher Rowland and Jonathan Roberts Australasian rights only ISBN 9781920691929 Paperback 14 x 21.5 cms 128 Pages Release Date: May 2008 Aus $34.95 Who has the right to interpret the Bible: the 'righteous' or 'sinners'? - Should the Bible dictate our interpretation of life or should or lives be the context for interpreting the Bible? - Who understands the Bible most clearly: insiders or outsiders? The poor or the rich? Priests and professors or artists and radicals? Are new, difficult life situations avenues into new understandings of God or opportunities to reassert tradition? In this book, two experts in biblical and literary studies offer a wide ranging discussion of what is going on in different types of 'Christian' interpretation. They consider examples from history, from literature, and from a range of contentious present day situations. Rather than providing answers, the authors open out the fundamental interpretive questions raised by same sex relationships, justice in society, religious heresy, and marriage and divorce. This book was first published as CHURCH OF THE ISLES by Ray Simpson for a British audience. In collaboration with Brent Lyons Lee, it has tapped into worldwide conversations about 'emerging church' and 'new monasticism' and applied it to an Australian context. Ray Simpson is an Anglican Priest and has been a minister in churches in Britian’s industrial midland, multi racial London and rural East Anglia, and he has planed a neighbourhood church sponsored by six church streams in Bowthorpe, Norwich. Enhancing Understanding - Advancing Dialogue: Approaching Cross Cultural Communication aims to facilitate encounters with other cultures and their members by examining how it is approached in the West. The books asks: What are some taken-for-granted assumptions brought into attempts to understand members of other cultures? What are some of the basic premises used when we meet someone from another culture, or see they behaviour on TV, or read about their perspectives in the print media? While engaging the author’s western counterparts rather than cultural interlocutors, the book explores some adverse assumptions which tend to be smuggled into cross cultural understanding, including those from popular views about science and social science, postmodernism, tolerance and neutrality. Enhancing Understanding - Advancing Dialogue argues that a first step to an increasingly sympathetic awareness and understanding of others, their cultures and religions, can be aided by examining and challenging entrenched social claims and values Rodney Fopp is a senior Lecturer in Sociology in the School of International Studies at the University of South Australia. His primary teaching areas are social ad political theory which he teaches at undergraduate and post graduate levels. 21 The God-Shaped Hole By Veronica Brady ISBN 9781920691875 Paperback 15 x 21 cms 140 pages Release date: February 2008 ATF Series Number 17 Aus $24.95 For many decades, Veronica Brady has been a gadfly to political and ecclesiastical prince sand their entourages. For those parched for relief from straitening patterns of thinking and self-absorbed myopia she has been a refreshing breeze, bringing hope to the heart and vision to the imagination. This book brings together a selection of her addresses that dare to suggest that there is a mystery beckoning us into something new, that is not satisfied with the way things are and that dares to believe that novels and poetry bear witness to this ministry. She calls this mystery - God – not with any confident triumphalism but as an other (who speaks through others) that subverts such a corrosive vice seeping through contemporary society. For her, God leads to other places, even to that which is not God. So from Marcus Clarke to Judith Wright, from Primo Levi to Kim Scott, she drinks in the refreshment of new possibilities which sacred texts have often lost under a pall of imperial conventionality. She discovers in these early and contemporary writers a way into the potential of – The God Shaped Hole – where is found the call and narrative of the necessity of remembrance, of balm for suffering, and pathway hints into a respect for Aboriginal Australians and the land of their identity. There are many things about the post-modern world of the early 21st century to challenge Christian preachers, and these challenges provide the immediate context for the book. How is the light, the fire of the gospel to be communicated today? Christians differ among themselves not only about the best way to respond in the contemporary situation but also about the nature of the relationship between worship and preaching. A range of theological views is represented here in essays that are themselves examples of good preaching, inviting the reader to open to the fire that burns at the heart of Christian worship. Vivian Boland OP teaches theology at Blackfriars Hall, Oxford 23 Rainbow Spirit Theology By Rainbow Spirit Elders ISBN 9781920691806 Paperback 114 pages Release Date: November 2007 Aus $14.95 Rainbow Spirit Theology represents a landmark in Australian theology. This text has been prepared by a group of Aboriginal Christian leaders with the aim of integrating the traditions of Aboriginal culture with the traditions of Christianity. The starting point for this theology is the land from which these Aboriginal Christian leaders believe their ancestors emerged and for which they still feel responsible as custodians of the sacred. Deep beneath the land is the Rainbow Spirit or Rainbow Snake, the eternal source of life and spiritual power. They identify God the Creator with the Rainbow Spirit in human form, which for them is Aboriginal Australian. Rainbow Spirit Theology provides a source of genuine dialogue between Aboriginal and immigrant Christians who enjoy a rich life on what was once Aboriginal land. Authors include George Rosendale (the spiritual leader of the group), Nola Archie, Denis Corowa, William Coolbura, Eddie Law, James Leftwich and Jasmine Corowa (artist), representing six Aboriginal peoples and ministry in four Christian traditions. Assisting the project were Robert Bos, Norman Habel and Shirley Wurst 24 ‘Into the World You Love’ Encountering God in Everyday Life Edited by Graeme Garett ISBN 9781920691998 Paperback 15 x 21 cm 294 pages Release Date: August 2007 PACT Series Number 2 Aus $35 Theology has suffered a declining status over the past two centuries. It has been banished from most modern universities and relegated to the fringe of intellectual life in many societies. But the secular humanism that sought to provide a replacement unifying narrative has failed to satisfy the yearnings of the human heart. The recent resurgence of interest in spirituality is fundamentally a quest for the numinous, the transcendent and the divine. This collection of essays was produced to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the opening of St Mark's National Theological Centre in Canberra. Written by systematic theologians, biblical scholars, pastoral carers and church historians, they demonstrate that God can be encountered readily in everyday life. These essays showcase the abilities of a diverse range of Australian Christian thinkers and the depth of the contributions they can make to popular understanding of human identity and destiny. Editor: Graeme Garrett is an Anglican priest and theologian. He has been on the staff of St Mark’s National Theological Centre for two decades 25 From Resurrection to Return: Perspectives from Theology and Science on Christian Eschatology Edityed by James Haire, Christine Ledger and Stephen Pickard ISBN 9781920691820 Paperback 15 x 21 cm 191 Pages Release date: November 2007 PACT Series Number 3 Aus $33 What do science and Christian theology have to say to each other about the resurrection and the return of Jesus? What might their dialogue teach us about creation? The book draws on this broad eschatological canvas. It is the fruit of a consultation which brought together scientific and theological thinkers, including Bishop NT Wright, Professor Ted Peters and Professor Robert Russell, to engage on these themes. It is a contribution to public and contextual theologies which address contemporary issue of concern to people in the churches and in wider society. Essentially the authors consideration of the Church is that it is the most intimate and graced communion not only of human persons but of the entire created cosmos bonded together in a wondrous relationship with the uncreated God. Unconfusedly and indivisibly united with God, the Church therefore enjoys and rightly proclaims the truth – ie it is infallible – for the world’s salvation and the glorification of God. Ultimately his the author’s theology of the Church’s infallibility, ie it’s truthfulness, is simply a donological affirmation of the genuine presence of God among his people and the world at large. Stylianos Harianakis is Archbishop and Primate of the Greek Orthodox Church in Australia, is founding Dean and Professor of Systematic Theology at Saint Andrews Greek Orthodox Theological College, Sydney. 27 Full list of books ATF Series 1.01 Faith in the Public Forum, 1999, edited by Neil Brown and Robert Gascoigne, 09958639906, Aus $15 2.02 Civilising Community for Us All, 2000, edited by Libby Davies and Francis Sullivan, 0958639922, Aus $15 3.03 More Than A Single Issue, 2000, edited by Murray Rae and Graham Redding, 0958639930, Aus $25 4.04 Spirit of Australia I, 2001, edited by Brian Howe and Alan Nichols, 0958639973, Aus$25 5.05 Prophecy and Passion, 2002, edited by David Neville, 1920691006, Aus $35 6.06 Rethinking Religion, Douglas Pratt, 2002, 1920691073, Aus $33 7.07 Spirit of Australia II, 2003, edited by Brian Howe and Philip Hughes, 1920691065 Aus $33 8.08 Church and Civil Society, 2003, edited by Sue Leppert and Francis Sullivan, 1920691138, Aust$25 9.09 Faith and Freedom, 2003, edited by David Neville and Philip Matthews, 1920691162 Aus $33 10.010 God Down Under, 2003, edited by Winifred Wing Han Lamb, and Ian Barns, 1920691146, Aus $33 11.011 The Future of Christianity, 2004, edited by John Stenhouse and Brett Knowles, 1920691235, Aus $33 12.012 The Bible and the Business of Life, 2004, edited by Simon Holt and Gordon Preece, 1920691243, Aus $33 13.013 Theology in a Third Voice, 2006, edited by Doug Hynd, James Barr, and Gordon Preece, 1920691367, Aus $29.95 14.014 Hope: Challenging the Culture of Despair, 2004, edited by Christiaan Mostert, 1920691200, Aus $28.00 15.015 Wisdom for Life, 2005, edited by Michael A Kelly and Mark O’Brien, 1920691294, Aus $33 16.016 Christianity Modernity and Culture, 2005, edited by John Stenhouse, 1920691332, Aus $33 17.017 The God-Shaped Hole, 2008, Veronica Brady, 9781920691875, Aus $23.95 28 18.018 Enhancing Understanding, 2008, Rodney Fopp, 9781920691882, Aus $38 19.019 Emerging Downunder, 2008, Ray Simpson and Brent Lyons Lee, 9781920691882, $28.95 Biblical Series 1.020 Beyond The Word of a Woman, 2008, Alan Cadwallader, 9781920691851, Aus $44 Dissertation Series 1.021.
