SPRING ISSUE April 2014 Mission Statement The mission of Lake of the Ozarks Habitat for Humanity, a non-profit ecumenical Christian housing ministry, is to work in partnership with low income families, donors and volunteers to provide decent, affordable shelter for those living at poverty levels and in sub-standard housing. Ozark Drywall, Inc., which is located in Macks Creek, MO, was started in 1999 by Jerry Addington. The company does residential and commercial drywall as well as metal studs and suspended ceilings. Jerry believes in delivering quality work and customer service. He has worked with many homeowners and contractors over the years and has greatly enjoyed meeting so many nice people in the local community. “I cover the lake area and all surrounding areas. No project is too large or small – I do everything from large commercial projects to bathroom remodels.” Ozark Drywall has turned into a family business since his son now works alongside Jerry to provide dependable service and to strive for customer satisfaction. Jerry stated that he enjoys working with Habitat for Humanity because it is one way he can give back to our community. "This is a wonderful community project and I feel very fortunate to be able to work on projects that provide families with a place to call home.” Tom Reth, Building Chairman, states that Ozark Drywall has done all drywall work and some painting in Habitat houses since 2010 (a total of four houses). The company also did the drywall work for the Helping Hands homeless shelter that the Habitat construction crew renovated several years ago. Ozark Drywall donates their labor and provides materials at cost. Habitat is very pleased with their work and hopes they continue supporting our affiliate. Museum volunteer, Pam Jones, museum archivist, Valerie Thomas, along with Kibbie and Philip Rolf from the Habitat for Humanity ReStore, display a rare flag given to the Camden County Museum. The Habitat for Humanity ReStore gets boxes full of donated items on a daily basis. Some items can easily be sold in the store, while others get donated to other venues. A few years ago, the ReStore received a box with a flag inside. The flag was placed on a shelf in the back of the store and that is where it remained for years. Criteria for qualifying for a Habitat Home: Applicant’s income should not exceed 50% of Camden County Median Income. Applicant should have satisfactory credit. Negative factors should be able to be explained and/or corrected. Applicant must show the ability to make house payment. Applicant must be able to make a down payment of approximately $1,000. (They are given a year to save for this and the money is then applied towards their first year of home owners insurance.) Applicant's current housing situation is unsatisfactory. Applicant is willing to partner with Habitat by providing "sweat equity." If you know of a family who might qualify, please contact Habitat Family Selection Chair, Deanna Nockunas at: 573-346-4787 The President’s Message Habitat for Humanity International was founded in 1976 by Millard and Linda Fuller in Americus, GA as an ecumenical organization to provide decent, affordable shelter to families around the world who could not otherwise afford to own their home. Lake of the Ozarks Habitat for Humanity was granted Affiliate status in 1996 and incorporated as a Nonprofit Corporation in Missouri on August 20,1996. We completed our first home in October, 1999 and since then have built an additional 13 homes. We are currently beginning the ground work on house #15 for the spring of 2014. All who volunteer time for our Affiliate give their time and talents to see that our mission to "build homes, communities and hope", is successful. From our highly skilled construction crew, to our staff at the Restore, to our administrative staff, to our Board of Directors, the hours of volunteer time is uncountable. That is what makes our continued building possible. If you would like to be a part of this wonderful organization and help assist with providing affordable shelter to someone that otherwise might not be able to afford it, please contact me or one of the Board of Directors and we will put your talents to work. Ann Walker, Board President 573-247-1608 HABITAT - A HAND-UP NOT A HANDOUT Habitat for Humanity is not a give-away program. Selected families agree to provide "sweat equity" helping in the construction of their home. Upon completion of the home and their "sweat equity" hours, the family enters into a non-interest mortgage with us for a specified number of years. ANNUAL CORPORATE SPONSOR AND VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION DINNER CREDIT CARD DONATIONS If you get air miles or other benefits from purchases on your credit card, you may use your credit card for Habitat donations by going to the secure HFHI website, habitat.org, and indicating your wish to donate and designate that it be sent to Lake of the Ozarks Habitat for Humanity Affiliate in Camden County, MO. The annual appreciation dinner –Shrimp Boil- was held on October 24, 2013. The people attending had a very enjoyable evening and a delicious meal. Besides the great food the program included recognition of workers, families, and volunteers who participate in the work of Habitat in our community. The weather was very fall like and beautiful and there were congratulations all around. Another year has passed with a successful Yard of the Month program. The rainy 2013 Spring proved to be a wonderful year for the yards of our partner families. This year, it was suggested that they incorporate planting edibles and herbs within their flowerbeds and containers. Nothing can beat picking and cooking with fresh herbs you’ve grown yourself. 2013 winners are: May Ronda Rideout - Planted new bushes June Don & Stacy Archer - Added landscaping July Don & Stacy Archer - Additional planting bed Aug Don & Stacy Archer - Colorful flowers Sept Randa Ginsky - Planters, added dry creek bed Oct Ronda Rideout - The Great Pumpkin Patch Dec Heather Haynes Family - Gingerbread Playhouse This brings our fourth year for the Yard of the Month to an end. Due to the extreme cold winter and late snow, the program will begin in May this year. It has been a successful program and with each new partner family that it is added, it makes it more challenging to choose a winner. It gives me a great sense of pride to see our families put that extra effort into their yards to win the recognition of a job well done! Kibbie Rolf Habitat for Humanity, Yard of the Month RESTORE THERE IS AN ABUNDANCE OF NICE ITEMS AT THE STORE.
