that the Y is a big
organization.
We employ 2,600 people, nurture
67,209 youth, engage 22,300
volunteers and serve 412,500
people across six counties – it’s easy
to get lost in the numbers.
But our story is really about the
individuals and families we help
every day, in little ways.

POWER READER
Learning has taken flight for
Victoria Rivera, a YMCA Power Scholar
at McCoy Elementary School. After starting the
program nearly a full grade below reading level,
Victoria caught up with her peers in just six
weeks. As part of the YMCA’s partnership with
BELL and Y-USA, Power Scholars helps
at-risk kids close the achievement
gap. As Victoria looks forward to third
grade, her favorite book is
“Judy Moody Was in a Mood”.

Board member, and his
son, Kingsley, Jr.
When Kingsley Clark was 11, his first
experience with the Downtown Y was when
he snuck over the fence to swim in the
pool after closing. Rather than turning him
away, Kingsley was “adopted” by Y staff
and members, who mentored him right up
until the day he entered Marshall University
on a football scholarship. Now a young
professional and family man, Kingsley gives
back by serving on the Downtown Y
board. He and son, Kingsley, Jr., are also
a dynamic duo on the
basketball court.

When Tom Allocco and Diana Ortega Sen
arrived at the Y last year, Tom was in a
wheelchair and Diana could barely walk after back
surgery. Through the Y’s HealthierLifeRX, a
health and wellness pilot funded through United
Health Foundation, they’re back on their feet
and moving fast. To celebrate Tom’s 80th
birthday, the couple recently traveled to
St. Martin, something they never thought
they’d be able to do. Says Diana: “The Y
literally gave us back our lives.”

The Frank DeLuca Y completed
a 20-month, $7.2 million capital
expansion, in partnership with Munroe
Regional Medical Center, to establish
a new Healthy Living Destination for
Marion County.

The Dr. P. Phillips Y concluded the first
phase of its 10,000 sq. ft. expansion,
with the full project underwritten by
Dr. Phillips Charities. Once complete,
this newly transformed Y will include
a Healthy Living café, the largest
group exercise studio in Orlando and
expanded space for Orlando Health
programs and services.
ROPER Y
The Roper Y unveiled a 7,000 sq. ft.
renovation, including a new Health
Performance Center and a mobile
teaching kitchen. The project
was underwritten with support
from the West Orange Healthcare
District, Orlando Health and Health
Central Hospital.
TITUSVILLE Y
The Titusville Y unveiled an improved
$300,000 tennis center, made possible
through the generosity of Y donors led
by Robin and Rhoda Fisher.
J. DOUGLAS WILLIAMS Y
The J. Douglas Williams Y added
new classroom space, funded through
Orlando Health, to accommodate the
health care provider’s growing schedule
of educational programs.

YEARS
OF MENTORING
YMCA Teen Achievers program turns
25, which means that 12,283 youth have
been encouraged, inspired and mentored
since 1990. With 90% of Achievers going
on to college or post-secondary success,
Heart of Florida United Way awarded a
$405,000 grant to expand Achievers
to three new school sites.
Headed to Tuskegee University with a full
academic scholarship, Zha’Niko McMillan,
a graduate of Dr. Phillips High School, was
accepted to college during the YMCA Teen
Achievers Annual College Tour. In 2015,
Y Teen Achievers celebrated
25 years of helping more than
12,000 young people achieve
their college and
career dreams.

This big mission is what keeps us
moving forward.
Still, if you’ve ever seen the smile
on a child’s face when she sinks the
winning basket, or heard the pride
in a mother’s voice when she tells
you her daughter will be the first in
the family to attend college, or felt
the strength in a senior’s hand as he
takes his first real steps after a fall,
you would understand that it’s these
little things, these innumerable,
immeasurable, invaluable little
things, that make our work
worthwhile.
DEAR FAMILY AND FRIENDS:
We are blessed to live in a wonderful
community. Yes, Central Florida is
a terrific place to live, and not just
because of our climate and plethora of
outdoor activities, but because of our
people. The people of Central Florida
care deeply about and for one another.
And, that is unique.
What makes the Y unique is that we have been a critical
part of Central Florida for so many years, and as our
community has grown and evolved, we have evolved
right along with it. For decades, the Y has addressed the
big issues, the big needs of the community as a whole,
while never losing sight of the needs of the individuals,
the moms, dads, kids and seniors who need what we
offer in order to make the most of their lives.
The BIG and the SMALL. That’s what we’re about. And
through the generous support of Dr. Phillips Charties
we are working on solving big issues like the obesity
epidemic, as well as the small things like teaching that
little boy on the basketball court about sportsmanship,
teamwork and respect so that he can grow up to be a
successful adult and a role model himself.
Our success in creating big programs, like our Diabetes
Prevention Program, and forming big partnerships,
with Sodexo, Orlando Health and others is big
news. But just as important is our commitment to the
seemingly small things, like helping a single mom who
is going through a hard time or providing a place for
seniors to find camaraderie and support on a daily
basis.
These are the things that make us proud to be a part of
this truly special organization. And these are the things
- the big and the small - that we celebrate in this year’s
annual report.
Together, by focusing on the big and the small, we are
empowering our community for good.

Named for John Sterchi,
the driving force
behind the Downtown
Y, this award honors
those who provide an
outstanding lifetime of
support to the YMCA of
Central Florida.
In 2002, when Mary
Jane Arrington
co-chaired her first
capital campaign for
the Osceola Y, her
passion and influence
were so large that the
that majority of funds
were raised during a
single kick-off event.
Nine years later, when
jobs and investment
were fleeing Kissimmee,
Mary Jane led another
successful capital
campaign for her
hometown Y. The result:
A beautiful, prideful Y
that strengthens this
richly diverse community
in big and small ways.
As an Osceola County
Commissioner and
Supervisor of Elections,
Mary Jane has also been
a longstanding member
of the YMCA Metro
Board and Executive
Committee, as well as
the Osceola Y’s family
center board. She is also
chair of the Osceola
Ys 2016 scholarship
campaign.

near and far. By building
new faith partnerships
within our local Ys and
communities, Renaut
is creating a culture of
service and compassion
that truly empowers our
community for good.
As pastor of Mosaic
Church and owner of
Axum Coffee, a faithbased nonprofit that
funds overseas missions,
Renaut will soon be
nourishing spirits, minds
and bodies through the
Y’s new Healthy Living
Café, which Axum will be
operating at the Dr. P.
Phillips YMCA.

and foster values and
learning. One of Andy’s
favorite philanthropic
causes has been the
Y Links2Learning Golf
Center at the South
Orlando Y, which
teaches inner-city kids
a new sport, along with
the STEM skills behind
it. The Warden family

supporter of YMCA
Camp Wewa, which has
helped generations of

Sandy Hostetter,
President of CNLBank,
uses her skills, talent
and influence to draw
others to the Y cause.
As a Y leader and
volunteer for more
than 25 years, Sandy
is a valued member of
the YMCA Executive
Committee and Metro
Board, which she chaired
in 2011. Prior to that,
she also led the Y’s
scholarship campaign
to new heights, raising
millions of dollars on
behalf of those in need.
In 2014, Sandy served
on the committee to
develop the Y’s 20142018 strategic plan,
which ensures that our
Y will remain relevant
and responsive in
meeting growing needs.

innovation. Over the
course of a 30-year
career that started
with Y organizations in
Washington, D.C. and
Charlotte, N.C., Dan
has made his mark in
operations. Since 2004,
he has guided an era of
rapid capital expansion
at the Y of Central
Florida. This includes
major renovations
and expansions of the
Frank DeLuca and Dr. P.
Phillips YMCAs, which
are becoming two of
the most innovative,
Healthy Living Ys in
the nation. As the Y’s
Chief Operating Officer,
Dan also oversees the
day-to-day operations
of 27 YMCA Family

JIM HINSON
1937-2015
The Y lost one of its greatest friends and
advocates in 2015 with the passing of
Jim Hinson, former President, CEO and
Chairman of Dr. Phillips Charities.
Jim’s philanthropic leadership inspired all
of us to reach higher, dream bigger and
never lose sight of what matters most.
From turning the first spade of dirt at the
early Dr. P. Phillips YMCA to paving the
way for our organization to become Dr.
Phillips Charities’ primary support agency,
Jim Hinson believed in the Y’s mission to
improve lives and communities.
Closest to his heart was Safe Start, the Y’s
infant water survival program that he
helped establish in 1999. Never far from
his desk was a huge book of letters from
grateful parents whose children had been
saved from drowning.
We deeply miss Jim. But his legacy will live
on in the millions of lives that have been
touched by his deep love and steadfast
support of the Y.
