BOURBON • All bourbon is whiskey but not all whiskey is bourbon •F ermented from a mash of at least 51% corn and stored in new charred American white oak barrels • No minimum aging requirement, but “straight bourbon” must be aged for at least two years • Distilled in the United States • Kentucky bourbon must, predictably, be distilled in Kentucky TENNESSEE WHISKEY • Nearly the same requirements as bourbon • Filtered through a thick layer of sugar maple charcoal before aging RYE WHISKEY • Fermented from a mash of at least 51% rye and stored in new charred oak barrels • No minimum aging requirement, but “straight rye whiskey” must be aged for at least two years with no coloring added WHEAT WHISKEY •F ermented from a mash of at least 51% wheat and aged in new charred oak barrels for at least one day • “Straight wheat whiskey” must be aged for at least two years with no coloring added CORN WHISKEY • Fermented from a mash of at least 80% corn •N o minimum aging requirement, but if aged, it may be in either new or used charred oak barrels • Cannot be filtered or “charcoal mellowed” like Tennessee whiskey MALT WHISKEY •F ermented from a mash of at least 51% malted barley and stored in new charred oak barrels •“ Straight malt whiskey” must be aged for at least two years with no coloring, additives or other alcohols added • Malt whiskeys that are not straight are considered “blended” SINGLE MALT SCOTCH WHISKY • Made in Scotland, where it is spelled “whisky” •F ermented from a mash of 100% malted barley and aged in oak barrels for at least three years • Often stored in used bourbon barrels •S ingle malt Scotch Whisky must have been distilled at a single distillery using a pot still distillation process MCR-1809P_whiskey_fest_mag_sign.indd 1 3/1/16 11:38 AM
