Carnival Cruise Lines, the world’s largest cruise operator, launched Carnival Splendor in July − making it the biggest passenger ship in the history of the company. In the spring, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. PROJECT MANAGER shocked the waves with Independence of the Seas − the biggest Paul Carpentier cruise ship on the planet. Or rather, the biggest for the moment: RCCL is set to launch the first of the new Genesis class ships, named CONTRIBUTORS Oasis of the Seas, already next year. Naturally, Oasis will be bigger Sami J. As one seeks to satisfy the demands of all the cruise-goers, the ship needs to be very large indeed. Kai Levander, Aker Yards’ naval architecture guru, has likened a cruise ship to a vessel that carries a hotel on top. In this scenario, the main limitation from the design perspective is maintaining stability − as more decks with balconies, PRINTED BY for instance, are added into the equation, a bigger hull is a must. Punamusta Oy, August 2008 Of course, the economy of scale upside is considerable when one can take in, say, five thousand passengers. While the size of these magnificent beasts has increased to near legendary proportions, the cruise experience itself is not reserved for those with the megabucks anymore. The people in the industry are fond of saying that cruising is no longer a luxury: it is a necessity. This means that people from all walks of life flock to the ships − so if it’s peace and quiet you are looking for, you probably need to buy your own boat. One cruise reporter even commented about the maiden voyage of the Independence that undoubtedly those booked on the cruise ship will enjoy it, but it’s worth bearing in mind that they’ll be sharing space with several thousand other people. The signature lofts will round up a new portfolio of 37 categories of accommodation options, many with views unique to the ship. “We are experiencing an underlying and solid net growth, and opening sales for Oasis in September, I believe, will be a milestone in our history in many aspects,” Stebekk declares confidently. The patrons of the Independence of the Seas are in for some royal treatment. ■ SAMI J. All this is done with professional pre- cision. Messua has executed thousands of fairs and exhibitions both in Finland and abroad since 1987. The strong know-how and extensive list of contacts enables Messua to carry out projects abroad as well. The fairs have become increasingly more important for companies, especially as meeting places. “We have discovered that the people come to trade and negotiate at the exhibitions. The expectations of taking part are set on a high level,” says Paloneva. Nowadays it is widely understood that participation in fairs is part of the whole marketing strategy and -budget for companies. The firm’s own stand operates as a business card in the world and it is very often the first visible unit for the new customers. It is also a very good way to distinguish one’s company from the competitors. The design team of Messua aims to provide creative solutions according to the image and profile of the firms. The service offered by Messua includes design and highquality implementation as well as project services. “Our project services in Finland include all necessary parts for the fair, both before and after the event. For example we can design the invitations, the event-specific web pages and a schedule for the stand. For several companies the common section can be a good and easy option to participate at the fairs in Finland,” Paloneva comments. In the autumn and winter Messua is visible at least in the following fairs: Finnbuild, Euroblech Hannover, Nordic Welding Expo, Husum WindEnergy, Monaco Yacht Show, SMM Hamburg, SMM Instanbul, Seatrade Cruise Shipping 2009 Miami and NorShipping Oslo. EXPORT SUBSIDY FOR FIRMS AIMING ABROAD Messua’s know-how is especially highlighted abroad. The long experience and the capacity needed for working abroad ensures that the units and stands are effectively implemented. Messua also takes care of all necessary organising at the fair itself. We also provide special project services for export events, similar to the fairs in Finland. Also the firms planning exports can participate in joint units, and apply for the export subsidy of the Ministry of Employment and Economy. Messua organises an export team for many international events, books the site and coordinates all the necessary actions needed for participation and subsidy application process. ■ More information: www.messua.fi 10 seatec 2/2008 briiffi Aker Yards Europlan Engineering Oy Welcome to International Marine Industry Fair in Turku, Finland 28.–29.4.2009! 2009 Contact Forum for Marine Industry Year 2007 NaviGate was organised for the first time. Several attempts have been made to solve the problem including metal alloys, electronic protection, polymeric materials and corrosion proof coatings. Most of the options have introduced new problems, such as electro chemical corrosion typical to metals. Polymeric materials increase the amount of flammable materials in ships and the life cycles of most coatings are not sufficient. The Finnish companies, Teknikum and YIT Teollisuus ja verkkopalvelut, have been delivering rubber coated steel pipes in cooperation. The pipes are designed to fit the purpose of use. The deliveries have been supplied around the world for over 20 years. The most typical destinations are the seawater pipes of ships and oil rigs. Coal and nuclear power stations located by the sea have also become important users of the pipes. The same production technology has been applied successfully in mining industry as well. ■ More information: www.teknikum.com 22 seatec 2/2008 A MEDIA FOR EXPERTS IN ENERGY ADS SERIES Automatic Dosing system Stops Vacuum Pipe blockage NOW YOU REALLY CAN GET RID OF BLACKWATER PIPING BLOCKAGE PROBLEMS Before After YOU REALLY CAN DO IT ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY CHECK MORE IN INTERNET WWW.MEGATECH.FI enertec.fi is an expert media covering all modes of energy production. enertec.fi is an essential source of information for the sector. Second, the new layout of the aft lido with a stunning ocean view and improved sun space,” he says. “Last but not the least, the Spray Park for children – a real plus which I am sure will give a lot of fun to the little ones.” Pressed for a personal favourite, Messina chooses the new aft lido layout with open ocean view, large sun space and elevated jacuzzi pools. “There you can really enjoy your time and relax,” he says. BIG SHIP, SMALL CUSTOMERS The Project Manager admits, however, that when it comes to families with children, Spray Park – an innovative water park for children – is hard to beat. Also in general, Messina believes that the small customers – and their parents – are becoming more and more important for the cruise business. “Families continue to be a growing part of the cruise scene, and this is particularly true with a contemporary cruise line like Carnival, which specialises in Caribbean cruises of different lengths, and has a relatively young guest demographic.” As a result, new features are constantly studied and developed to ensure that the cruise will be a great experience for the young public as well. Obviously, the cooperation between the cruise line and the shipyard is crucial in any ship-building project. But in ventures of this magnitude, one would think that the partners have to be joined at the hip for everything to work out. Luckily, Messina reports that the collaboration with Carnival Cruise Lines was “just outstanding”. “We have a close relationship with our customer and easy and open communication at all levels. That’s a key factor for 40 seatec 2/2008 smooth development of the newbuilding process.” GREEN MATTERS Green features also include biocide- “As Project Manager, it has been an free hull paint and there are provisions for unbelievable enriching experience to re- a planned advanced system for treatment late with so many people, both from a of all waste-water. personal and professional point of view,” Messina says, adding that the job involves One ever-growing concern in the minds of the cruise lines is the environmental mind- CRUISING THE BALTIC dealing – on daily basis – with a wide va- set.
