“BRASS…mixed
the anarchic with
the traditional to
thrilling effect.”
Ivan Hewett
The Telegraph
“Festivals can be very niche, but
BRASS has shown you can have
anything, from the traditional to
the innovative. It’s very inclusive
and that’s the key to a great festival!
I love how it gives young people
something to aspire to, as that’s
the only way brass playing is going
to survive.”
Hannabiell Sanders

“It’s impossible not to be infected
by the two weeks of happy madness
that is BRASS! The atmosphere on
the streets and in local venues across
the county is amazing.”

A very warm welcome
to this year’s BRASS!
We have a fantastic programme of
brass-inspired events coming up in 2014
featuring world-class musicians, colourful
performances, international street bands
and art installations. You don’t have to
be a fan of brass to enjoy the festival –
there really is something for everyone!
We’re incredibly excited about a number
of new commissions we are premiering
at the festival including the brilliant
British Sea Power who will perform
reworkings of their favourite songs
with a local brass band, and the world
premiere of Steamsong, a stunning
multimedia opera and visual piece from
John Kefala Kerr inspired by the 126mph
record-breaking run set by Mallard in
1938. We also have jazz legend Jon Faddis
performing one of just three UK dates in
2014, and the world premiere of Fractal
Sparks, a visual spectacular featuring two
of the UK’s most original musical talents
– Jo Hamilton and Lanterns On The Lake.
We’ve an old favourite as Streets of
BRASS returns once again with a series
of free events in Durham City featuring a
tremendous range of UK and international
street bands that will get everyone partying.
Outreach work is at the heart of BRASS
and children and young people will
continue to benefit from our education
programme in 2014.
The role of culture is vitally important in
these economically straitened times and
we’re delighted to be developing and
hosting such a wide range of creatively
rich and imaginative festivals this year
including TakeOff Festival and Durham
Book Festival, as well as high profile sports
events such as the Marie Curie Cancer
Care Etape Pennines. I would like to thank
Arts Council England and our much valued
programme partners for their continued
support of County Durham’s arts festivals.
I would also like to pay tribute to
community stalwart Fred Traice who
sadly passed away last year. Fred was
extremely passionate about the arts and
supported numerous community groups,
arts organisations and sports clubs
throughout his life. He is sadly missed.
A huge thank you to everyone involved
in the festival for their unwavering energy,
enthusiasm and support. A special thanks
in particular to Sally Dixon and Nikki Locke
who have helped the festival become
what it is today, but have recently left
for pastures new. We wish them all the
best for the future.
I hope to see you at a BRASS
event very soon.
Councillor
Simon Henig
Leader of the Council
Events which are fun for families
play a big part in this year’s festival
with our ‘Big BRASS Bash’ events, and
the ever popular Community Tour is
back, giving local people opportunities
to experience world class performances
from UK and international bands almost
on their doorstep.

Brass:Pitch is a series of newly
commissioned works by artists and
performers from across the UK. Each
work sets out to challenge our perceptions
and understanding of brass music,
either through exploring its historical
and contemporary social contexts,
or expanding the boundaries of the genre
by creating new forms of music production.

Connections takes the form of a map
based on the pre-Beeching railway network
to present a snapshot of the brass band
movement in County Durham as it is
today in the 21st century. The etched map,
made of brass plate to recall the heritage
of the county, replaces railway stations
with QR codes that when scanned with
a smartphone direct you to digital media
content of twenty-two bands rehearsing
in rooms across County Durham.

Unique creative collaborations have
produced some delightfully unusual
and engaging works which we hope
will capture people’s imagination.

Exploring ideas of community and
belonging, Hjem (Hyem) is a 360° film
installation that invites you to reflect on the
bonds that link youth culture with tradition,
and which link North East communities with
the rest of the world. Hjem, which translates
as ‘home’, is Scandinavian in origin and
came into use in English during the Middle
Ages. The North East and London are
the only regions where there is recorded
evidence of Hjem and Hyem being used in
local dialect. Collaborating with Craghead
Colliery Band, Edwin and Isaac have created
an audio and visual experience that allows
the visitor to walk into an open-access
screening that provides an ever-changing
perspective as they circulate the room.

Following a preview performance at
Locomotion – The National Railway
Museum at Shildon earlier in the year,
BRASS presents the world premiere
of this stunning multimedia opera from
award-winning composer John Kefala
Kerr, inspired by the locomotive Mallard's
record-breaking run in 1938. Steamsong
combines theatrical and vocal performance,
projected video, digital sound and live
instrumental music to create a poetic work
that compresses railway culture into the
space of a theatre and releases it again
with steam-like delicacy, energy and punch.

The production brings together a live music
ensemble led by conductor Simon Fidler,
a chorus comprising members of one of
the UK's leading chamber choirs Voices of
Hope, and Emmerdale actress Zoe Lambert.
This event has been commissioned
by the Brass: Durham International
Festival in partnership with the

Jo Hamilton’s music embodies a sense
of deep appreciation for the everyday
world, best described perhaps as “Sarah
McLachlan meets Bjork singing Robbie
Burns songs backed by Sigur Ros”. As
the world pioneer of the AirPiano, Jo
uses technological elements in her
music, but at the heart of the songs is
the nostalgia of the Highlands and Islands
where she sang as a child. Following
her critically-acclaimed debut Gown,
Fractal Sparks will showcase new tracks
from Jo’s forthcoming album Fractals.
“Singular and
unforgettable,
Hamilton is quite
a discovery.”
The Guardian
Newcastle-upon-Tyne-based Lanterns
On The Lake released their second
album, Until The Colours Run, last year
through Bella Union, with the likes of
Drowned In Sound declaring it “one of
the best records of the young decade”.
Their music is an exquisitely crafted blend
of cinematic post-rock, folk and electronics
and with sold out shows at venues across
Europe and North America as well as The
Sage Gateshead and London’s Bush Hall,
the band are fast becoming one of the
UK’s must-see live acts.

Bach to Boogie with
Prince Bishops Brass
Friday 18 July
7.30pm
6.00pm
West Park, Newton Aycliffe
Free
There are faeries and boggles, you may
not have met them yet, but we all know
they are there. The King of the Boggles
is a little bit unhappy and he is paying
Newton Aycliffe a visit. If we can cheer
him up, he will bless the town with a gift.
So join us and we’ll show him what we’ve
got with a celebration of live brass music,
flags, dance and costume. Go on, help us
put a smile on his face!
