The H. longipes Complex = 岩ギボウシ (The Rock Hostas)
H. longipes (岩ギボウシ) is considered one of the most variable (polymorphic)
groups of closely related Hosta populations. This is due to the wide-ranging habitat
that extends from the Kantō region (関東地方, Kantō-chihō) in the North to Kyūshū
region (九州地方, Kyūshū-chihō) to the South. Kantō is the area surrounding Tokyo
and Kyushu is the southernmost island where the large city of Nagasaki is located.
Nagasaki-shi (長崎市). This habitat spans almost one-half of the entire Japanese
Archipelago and areas of different climates and ecologies that caused different
forms to evolve. They are called rock hostas, because they are found mostly in the
mountains of this part of Japan where they have adapted to grow on rock outcrops
along the streams, splashed with water, while Others have evolved to inhabit sheer
rock faces in the mountains. Still other H. longipes variants cover huge boulders
with a contiguous layer of leafy hosta species. The multiplicity of phenotypes and
7
genotypes has evolved due to environmental conditions and relative isolation created
by tall mountain chains. Almost every geographic district has H. longipes
populations that are differentiated from others. Only taxonomically identified taxa
are included in this brief overview.

Mountain-dwelling species,
growing mostly in higher elevations on moist rock out-crops and along ridge lines.
Population size is usually very small. Rarely seen in lower habitat along the river
valleys. H. longipes var. caduca is found on Shikoku in the Ishizuki and Akaishi
mountain ranges of Kochi Prefecture (Kochi-ken 高知県) and Ehime-ken (愛媛県);
also in Kyūshū in the Kyūshū Sanchi (九州山地) Mountain Range in following
prefectures: Miyazaki-ken (宮崎県), Fukuoka-ken (福岡県), Ōita-ken (大分県),
Kumamoto-ken (熊本県), and Kagoshima-ken (鹿児島県). Reportedly in

This taxon is NOT H. ‘Tardiflora’.
Maekawa (1969) dropped the local native
name 秋擬宝珠 (= H. sparsa) and adopted
H. Tardiflora'. He also transferred the
Japanese name Aki Giboshi to H.
'Tardiflora'. Being incorrect, this transfer
is the reason why Japanese botanists have
mixed up the names H. ‘Tardiflora’, Aki
Giboshi (= H. longipes f. sparsa) and the local
name for Aki Giboshi, i.e., Hosoba Iwa
Giboshi (細葉 岩擬宝珠 = H. longipes var.
lancea). Schmid (1991. 2006) pointed out
that H. ‘Tardiflora’ has yellow anthers and
H. longipes f. sparsa has purple anthers
