RUTGERS, THE STATE UNIVERSITY OF NEW JERSEY

Twelfth Convocation

Louis Brown Athletic Center
The SMLR Gonfalon
by John Burton Jr., Professor Emeritus
Rutgers School of Management and Labor Relations
The gonfalon (located on the platform) for the School of Management and Labor
Relations was designed to symbolize the mission of the school: to improve the
relationship between management and labor in order to serve the public. The three
colors used throughout the gonfalon represent the three parties interested in constructive
employment relations: labor (red), management (blue), and the public (gold).
The inner set of triangles represents the common and sometimes ineffective interaction
between labor and management and the consequences for the public. The shades of
red, blue, and gold in the inner triangles are muted and dark. The role of the School
of Management and Labor Relations is to improve the relationship. The School’s
contributions to the better relationship between management and labor and ultimately
to the benefit of the public is symbolized by the multi-pointed explosion of gold that
lies behind the triangles. The result of the school’s contributions to the improved
relationship between the participants in employment relations and to the public is
shown in the outer set of triangles. The shades of blue, red, and gold in the outer
triangles are bright and vivid.
The gonfalon was created in 1994 when the Institute of Management and Labor
Relations was transformed into the School of Management and Labor Relations. Dean
John Burton, Associate Dean Steven Director, and Assistant Dean Betty Lou Heffernan
were responsible for the concept and general design of the gonfalon. Kevin Rau, a
graphic artist and the husband of Assistant Professor Barbara Rau, helped translate the
concept into the final design.

Meet the Student Speakers
Reyna E. Martinez is receiving a master’s degree in Human Resource Management
(HRM) in January 2015. Reyna was raised in Paterson, N.J. and served as president of
the Rutgers University Society for Human Resource Management (RU SHRM) in fall
2014. Last semester, she was the proud recipient of the School of Management and
Labor Relations’ G.O.A.L.S. Minority Scholarship as well as the SHRM Foundation’s
Graduate Academic Scholarship. Reyna interned at Sikorsky Aircraft this past summer
and joined Rolls-Royce North America’s HR Graduate Leadership Development
Program in February.
William Campbell is receiving a master’s degree in Labor and Employment Relations
(MLER). He earned his bachelor’s degree in Labor Studies and Employment Relations
(LSER) with highest honors through the School of Management and Labor Relations
and completed his degree in three years. Will is a native of Mount Laurel, N.J., where he
serves as a Democratic Committeeman representing District 11. As an undergraduate
and graduate student, he worked as a teacher’s assistant for the undergraduate
courses: Introduction to Labor and Employment Relations and Development of the
Labor Movement. While at Rutgers, Will was an active leader in community outreach
and philanthropic pursuits for the Omicron Alpha Chapter of the Kappa Delta Rho
Fraternity. For the last year, Will has been employed as a legal administrator at the
law firm Vella, Singer and Martinez, P.C., located in Metuchen and Hillsborough, N.J.
He will attend Rutgers Law School in the fall and seeks a career protecting the rights
of unions and employees.
Jade Palmieri is receiving a bachelor’s degree for her dual major of Human Resources
Management (HRM) and Labor Studies and Employment Relations (LSER). Born and
raised in New Jersey and currently residing in Green Brook, Jade has maintained a 4.0
grade point average since the summer of 2013. Due to her academic achievement, she
was inducted into Rutgers University’s Kappa Iota Chapter: Delta Epsilon Iota (national
honor society). To gain additional experience outside the classroom, she worked as a
human resources intern at iconectiv last summer while balancing the weight of two
summer courses. Recently, Jade represented Rutgers during their first appearance in
the International Negotiations Cup Conference held in Montreal, which required her
to negotiate an agreement with students of diverse cultural backgrounds. Currently,
she is a teacher’s assistant for the Introduction to Labor Studies class. She is also the
founding president of the first student run, student chapter of Rutgers University
Labor and Employment Relations Association (RU LERA). After graduation, Jade
plans on furthering her education by obtaining a master’s degree in Human Resources
Management to fulfill her aspiration of becoming a human resources director.
Tracy M. Ng is receiving a bachelor’s degree in Human Resources Management (HRM)
as well as in psychology and sociology. Tracy believes Rutgers University and her HRM
courses have prepared her for a new position at Aon Hewitt. After graduation, she
will reside in Colonia, N.J. and work as a business delivery specialist at Aon Hewitt.”

Alma Mater
ON THE BANKS OF THE OLD RARITAN
From far and near we came to Rutgers,
And resolved to learn all that we can:
And so we settled down,
In that noisy college town,
On the banks of the old Raritan
Refrain:
On the banks of the old Raritan (my friends)
Where old Rutgers evermore shall stand,
For has she not stood
Since the time of the flood,
On the banks of the old Raritan
Then sing aloud to Alma Mater
And keep the scarlet in the van’
For with her motto high
Rutgers name shall never die
On the banks of the old Raritan
