HOW TO GET READY FOR
YOUR GOLF SEASON

appointment with myself or Brett to have your

JUNIOR PROGRAM 2016
By: Brett Claggett Woods
It’s that time of year again. Time to register your
children in one of our six-week junior golf lesson
programs!
Terry Reilly and I will be offering several junior
programs that fit the needs of all different ages
and skill levels. We are excited to teach the great
game of golf, and all of the positive life skills and
lessons that the game offers. These include; safety,
respect, honesty, patience, and physical activity.
This year we will be offering five programs, each
designed to maximize fun, performance, and
learning. These programs will be the Peewee
Golf Clinic, Peewee+ Golf Clinic, Learn to Play
Clinic, Train to Play Clinic, and the Junior Girls
Clinic.
The Peewee Golf Clinic is for kids aged 5-10 who
are brand new to the game of golf. The program
incorporates the SNAG Golf system and is a fun
and exciting way to learn about the fundamentals
of the game.
This year, for the first time we are including the
Peewee+ Golf Clinic. The Peewee+ Clinic is for
kids aged 7-12, and is intended for students that
have maximized their learning through past
participation in the SNAG program, and who are
ready for more formal instruction.
Our Learn to Play program is for older juniors
who are interested in taking up the game. For
ages 12-18, this program is designed to teach the
students the fundamentals of the game, as well as
overall sports skills.
The Train to Play program is for older juniors
who play in or who are interested in playing in
competitive tournaments. The course focuses on
the golf swing, training, the mental game, and
course strategy. It is a goal oriented program
designed to maximize a player’s abilities.
Lastly, we are once again going to be offering our
Junior Girls Clinic. This is a program that is
designed to introduce young girls to the game of
golf, to teach them fundamentals of the game,
and to help them realize what a fun game the
sport of golf is!
For more information on the programs (dates,
times), feel free to contact the Pro Shop, or go to
the Niakwa Country Club website.
I look forward to seeing you all again this season,
and to helping your children enjoy this great,
lifelong sport!
NEW GOLF CARTS ARRIVE!
By: Mike Gottfred
Niakwa has a new fleet of power carts for the
2016 season. We have chosen the E-Z-GO RXV
model in which we are sure will provide years
of reliable and trouble free service. As you have
seen or soon will see, we have changed up the
colour on the cart this year. The bodies are
almond with black roofs. They are very sharp
looking and will include the same amenities we
had with the previous fleet. There are two sand
and seed bottles, a windshield, and four deep
drink wells on the console.
One noticeable difference this year is the
automatic parking brake. As soon as the cart
comes to a complete stop, the parking brake is
automatically engaged. The cart won’t move
until the accelerator pedal is pressed down to
drive the cart again. This may take a little
getting use to, but I think the safety benefits will
greatly outweigh the short term learning curve.
As this is the most popular cart in the market,
many of you will have already driven one on
your travels to other golf courses.
To go along with the new power carts, we have
a new fleet of Ricksha pull carts. They are
outfitted the same as the previous fleet with
sweater baskets and drink holders.
CHICK DUNCAN AWARD
A special
congratulations to
Garrett Neiles on
winning the 2016
Chick Duncan Award!
Many of you know
Garrett for his fantastic
musical abilities and
talents. However,
Garrett is also a
talented golfer and a
great example of the young individuals who
represent Niakwa.
Garrett is currently completing a Bachelor of
Arts degree at the University of Manitoba with
a major in Pyschology, he is an honor roll
student and prioritizes balancing his studies
with his music and athletics.
Garrett uses his musical and golf abilities to
volunteer for great causes throughout the city
including Winnipeg Harvest, Manitoba
Psychiatric Association, Rainbow Railroad, The
Movement Centre, Boys and Girls Club of
Winnipeg and the Niakwa Junior Program.
Garrett is also a very accomplished competitive
player including helping the Niakwa Mundie
Putter Team win the championship in 2014.
The future of Niakwa will be in good hands
with fantastic characters like Garrett as a part of
COLD STORAGE BUILDING
By: Craig Campbell
Did you know that Niakwa has over 1.5 million
dollars invested in equipment? Did you know
that over $150, 000 of that equipment currently
sits outside all year? Having equipment
exposed to the elements drastically shortens the
life expectancy and speeds up the depreciation
of the equipment. As with any investment it is
good to protect them. Members may not have
realized that the new turf care facility only
stores one piece of equipment, the sprayer. The
old maintenance shop and the old tin building
were used to store the majority of the
equipment, but there was still not enough space
to store all of it. After years of adding
material around the property the tin
building was lower than the rest of the
surrounding area and whenever it rained
the entire building would fill with water.
This made it very interesting in the spring
time when all the water in the building
would freeze and would at times freeze
equipment to the ground.
This made it challenging at times to just get
equipment out of the building and any
equipment that was going to be parked in
the building needed to be put on blocks to
keep them from freezing to the ground.
When it was decided that we were going
to build a new cold storage building the
first thing that needed to be determined
was, how much space is actually needed to
house all of the equipment properly. We
also had to consider that removing the tin
building would require the new building
to accommodate all the space we were
losing from that building. We determined
that a 4000 square foot building would be
able to house all of the equipment. We are
pleased to announce that the building is
nearly complete and are anxious to start
moving equipment into a new clean dry
building.

In his free time he enjoys spending time with his wife and
two children. Most days he can be found cheering on his
kids inside hockey arenas or on the sidelines of the soccer
field. He also enjoys playing football and golf and spending
a couple of days at the gym when his schedule allows him. He enjoys learning about wine, craft beer, and craft
cocktails, where he spends a lot of time reading and product sampling to master the art of craft.
Jason is very excited to join the Niakwa team and looks forward to bringing some of his ideas and hospitality flair to
the club. He looks forward to getting to know everyone at the club and always has time to listen to a story or
adventure you might want to share.
