If March comes in like a lion, it will go like a lamb. Commodore William Hahn March will start off with the traditional Sundowners Ceremony on Wednesday March 2nd. Another way of celebrating this 45th year of CHYC would be to attend the March 12th FCYC dinner, where our FCYC representative Jack Burwell, will be installed as Commodore of the FCYC. We expect to have on that night, members from each of the 36 FCYC Clubs. Reservations are required. The House and Rules Committee, under the leadership of Vice Commodore Bob Wedemeyer, will be presenting some new rules for the Board of Directors consideration at the next Board meeting. If approved they will be included in the 2016 Roster to be distributed to members in March. Be sure your name and address and telephone number, in the present book are accurate. Please remember to always make reservations for the dining room ahead of time, so that appropriate dining room staffing can be arranged. Bill Hahn, Commodore THANK YOU DORIS FOR YOUR SERVICE AND HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Left - Son, Jack Conboy Jr., Daughter, Christine Conboy, Son-in-Law, Steve Bushinsky and, of course, Doris Conboy 3 HOUSE & RULES Greetings everyone! It has been a fabulous February at CHYC. Besides our daily activities and menu, we have had a trivia night, dinner and a movie, a seafood buffet, and a wonderful Valentine’s Day dinner dance. The Entertainment Committee and staff deserve a big thanks for their hard work! We continue to get great reviews on the comment cards from our members. There will soon be new cards on the table for your comments. It is very important that we hear from all of you on these cards. You can drop them in the entry hall lock box as you leave the club. All comments are held confidential and are only seen by the Vice Commodore. Your comments, both pro and con, allow us to provide the kind of club and service that you want. We will also draw one comment card per month and the winner will receive a free drink of their choice. The winner for this past month was Janeann Dailey. As you all know, one way we show our appreciation of our employees is by honoring one person each quarter. We welcome your suggestions as to who should receive this honor. If you receive outstanding service from a staff person, please write a note to GM Bo White. You can nominate any staff member - kitchen staff, wait staff, bartender, office staff, or dock master. The chosen employee will receive a cash gift, his or Vice Comm. Bob Wedemeyer her photo will be displayed at the information desk, and they will be awarded a pin to wear. The pin will then be passed on to the next quarterly winner. Our employees are the life blood of our club, so let’s let them know how important they are to us. The new members rosters will be coming out soon. Please review them for any changes since the last edition. If you find that your information is incorrect, please let the office staff know as soon as possible so that corrections can be made. Finally, we want everyone to help us celebrate our beautiful club. Bring your friends and neighbors to the club for a guided tour and a chance to meet our members and hear about our social events, sports, and special activities. Remember this is your club and you are its best advocate. GROUNDS & MARINA Here it is March already. Spring is just around the corner—-which means renewed growth in our lawns and gardens. Weeding and trimming goes on and on and on………. I am looking for suggestions from our members for updating our gardens with a splash of color, in the form of flowers and colorful shrubs around the grounds. Our Dockmaster, Joe, is almost finished with the re-planking of the finger piers. Now I need volunteers to help with the painting and sealing of all the pilings and decks in the marina. So, get those coveralls and give me a call. We can make it a painting party! The up and coming FCYC Change of Watch weekend is scheduled for March 11-13th. We have 3 Rear Commodore, Bob Freda visiting boats, from nearby yacht clubs that have signed up as of now, and are expecting several more to be joining us for this event. HARBORMASTERS The Harbormasters planned a tour of Fat Point Brewing in Punta Gorda in February, which should have occurred by the time you read this article. Our next meeting will be on Thursday, 11 am, March 17th, with lunch here at the Club. The event topic will soon be announced by E-Blast.. Stay tuned!.......Just to remind you, our scheduled Wednesday evening Dinner dates, May thru September, are starting to fill-up fast. So call me ASAP to secure your group sponsored profitable spot on the summer calendar. My number is: 941-255-0111. Looking forward to seeing you at our next meeting…...and thank you for your continued support! Paul Kidd President SHOOTING CLUB SHOOTING CLUB The next meeting of the Shooting Club will be on 7 March at J&J Gun Shop at 0900. Plans are to hold a competition shoot at this event. All members are encouraged to participate. This will be a fun and safe shooting event for all CHYC members. The Club is open to all members, men and women and is a great way to meet new friends and enjoy your shooting hobby. As a member of the CHYC, all shooters must register with J&J, which then entitles you to shoot anytime at a reduced range rate. The Club is here for our enjoyment and I look forward to seeing those interested at the range. Safety with a weapon requires practice and that is what this Club is all about. E-mail me if you have any questions: [email protected]. Tony Geiser, Chairman 4 FLEET ACTIVITIES Do you find your boat sits on the lift or at the dock for weeks on end with little or no use? If so you are probably doing more damage than you might think. Fortunately, there is an easy fix. Check out our up coming cruises and sign up in the members’ only area of our website! If you are new to our club, I can tell you that the best way to get to know fellow boaters and club members is through cruising and we have a number of cruises, both overnight and day adventures, planned. Again, if you do not own a boat, and would like to get on the water, I urge you to sign up for the lunch cruises or raft-ups. Someone will be glad to take on a passenger or two. On March 11-13 we have a cruise to Naples YC to watch the parade on the 12th in Naples. This cruise has garnered much interest and, as a result, there is a waiting list. On March 24th, we will do another lunch cruise, probably to Laishley Crab House. On March 27th we will have raft-up right outside the channel entrance to CHYC. Fleet Captain, Ralph DeCesare April will start out with a week-long trip to Everglades City. If you are interested in this, cruise don’t wait too long since space at marinas and yacht clubs may be somewhat limited. Our Dragon boat team is very busy preparing for upcoming races and as a result are running two practices most Wednesdays and Saturdays. 7th ANNUAL CHARLOTTE HARBOR REGATTA Our Club was a major supporter of the 7th Annual Charlotte Harbor Regatta, over the weekend of February 5th, 6th, and 7th. Some 60 boats in 10 specific One Design classes entered the regatta and were spread out over the harbor on three separate race courses. The CHYC boat basin was home to the single handed 2.4mRs and to local Fleet 198 and its Flying Scots. A number of CHYC members volunteered their time and in some cases their power boat to assist with the race management on and off the water. Among the many area volunteers, a special thanks to CHYC members, Liz Cassidy, Roger Strube, Mary Knowles, Jack Whaley, Hank Bauman, Woody Woodward, Michael Walters, Al Shuhart, Jack and Kaye MacDonald, Rich Oakley, and Hank Killion for helping out. Our Flying Scot fleet had four competitive races with club member, Dave Strawbridge and crew, Joe Connolly taking a best finishing 2nd place among the group. Also in the competition from CHYC was, Doug Shore with Don Gasgarth, Bob Knowles with Martin Holland, Sam Thomas with daughter Catalina, Ed Werner with Barbara Werner, and Paul Willsey with Dieter Lehmann. Also note that Flying Scot #38, the blue hulled boat that is available for CHYC members to sail, was raced by our own Jordan Hand with his crew mate Kayla McCulloch, Jordan and Kayla are members of the Charlotte Harbor Youth Sailing program based right here at the Club. Both of these avid young sailors have taken lessons over the years, have become certified US Sailing instructors and are now teaching sailing with the CHYC program. By the way most of you reading this will recognize Jordan in the photo as helmsman of the Flying Scot. Yes, he is the same young man that graciously assists serving us all at the club. Want to help out with our racing program, be race committee members, sail the Flying Scot #38, or assist with the CHYS activities? Just say hello to any of the members listed in this article and we can get you started. “Jordan and Kayla sailing upwind at CHR” 5 HARBOR LITES The “Ides of March” are upon us! I am glad to report to everyone that at our last General Membership Meeting we had 54 wonderful ladies in attendance. Lorenzo Marion, a Psychic Medium had us all mesmerized with his presentation of, “Angels Among Us”. At times, there was not a dry eye in the room. He was extremely amusing, as well as spiritual. We will certainly entertain the idea of bringing him back on another occasion. This month, we are celebrating St. Patrick (albeit a few weeks early) by having Chuck Marlowe play the Bagpipes. Chuck is better-known around the Club as a paddler on CHYC Harbor Dragons. The day would not be complete without Irish dancers. The Irish Dance Academy of Sarasota will provide some very young, adorable girls to perform for us. These young ladies range in age of Kindergarten to Fifth Grade and are home schooled. They will not miss any school in order to perform for us. Our Games Day on February 23, 2016 was quite successful again this year. A big thank you goes out to all of the ladies who helped to make this another wonderful experience at the club. Friday, January 29, 2016 was a very special evening at CHYC. We all helped Doris Conboy celebrate her Birthday at the club. Harbor Lites presented her with a birthday cake and balloons too! It was a lovely time to celebrate one of our own Harbor Lites Past Presidents and to show our appreciation for all of the time and hard work she has given to Charlotte Harbor Yacht Club. Our Depth Sounder was one of her great achievements. Giuditta’s, of Punta Gorda, will be providing the fashions again this year at our Annual Spring Fashion Show on March 22, 2016. Judy Damron and Dorothy Farnham will be coordinating the fashions. There will also be a fabulous Chinese Auction; so you want to be sure to save the date. April Luncheon Menu: HOT: COLD: DESSERT: Manicotti w/ Garlic Roll Baby Spinach Salad w/ Chicken & Apples, etc. Tiramisu Our next meeting will be Tuesday, April 5, 2016 Please do not forget to attend Sundowners on March 2, 2016 at 5:30 PM Audrey Walther, President Membership Chair Janet Garofoli With Tammy Anczok President Audrey Walther with Laura Amendola 2nd Vice-President Pat Jaccoud, guest speaker Lorenzo Marion and President Audrey Walther Left—Birthday Girls—Diane Floramo, Connie Martell, Jan Hokenson, Carole Giarrante with President Audrey Walther 6 7 HARBOR DRAGONS A Rockin’ and A Rollin’… One of the life’s best experiences is sitting at water level in a full dragon boat, seeing the beautiful calm waters of the Harbor and paddling your heart out along with the team. Sometimes dolphins come out to greet us and birds are always nearby. But occasionally, we get to rock and roll – that’s when the wind kicks up and the water becomes a rolling carnival ride. These conditions can occur during races, and it is important to be prepared for this as well as calm waters. While it is more of a challenge to keep paddling to maintain a steady boat, it is also lots of fun and very exhilarating. At these times we love to yell and cheer ourselves on while heading back toward the club. When we see the calm CHYC basin, and the beautiful marina, that’s when we really start to cheer and we know we have made it home! The team is seriously preparing for its first race of the season on March 5 at Mira Bay in Apollo Beach. On January 30/31, a clinic was held with Pat Bradley as trainer. It included two intense days of training on the water, with video replays and classroom instruction. Pat is the former Canadian National Dragon Boat Coach and holds clinics around the world - Spain, Dubai, US, and also has his own Dragon Boat Camp in Canada. Come on out on a Wednesday or Saturday morning and see the CHYC burgee flying on our newly refurbished boat (which was lovingly performed by dedicated team members). You are all invited to join us for a paddle on any Saturday 0930 practice - you can learn to rock and roll the Dragon Boat way. Paddles up! Jeri Fine Schaller 8 MANAGER'S COLUMN Bo White Where has the season gone? It is March already and the snowbirds are growing wings. We have had so much fun yet there is more to be had. Trivia, St. Patty's Day and Easter are just a few of the events planned for our members. Charlotte Harbor Yacht Club has the pleasure of hosting the F.C.Y.C. Change of Watch where our own Jack Burwell will be made Commodore. This occurs on March 11,12 and 13. Please join us Easter is early this year and we will have our popular Easter Egg hunt on Saturday, March 26th and Chef Ben's lavish Easter Brunch on Easter Sunday from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm, make your reservations early. A very special thank you to the membership committee for a job well done. New members have a star on their name tags so introduce yourself and make a new friend. My door is always open if I can be of service. See you at the Club. Philip "Bo" White General Manager ENDOWMENT BOOK CLUB JOIN US! CHYC Bookworms meet every 2nd Wednesday of the month, Sept – May in the Ship’s Wheel. March 9th at 11:00 a.m., Ellen Klinger will present Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel. We have lunch during our discussion. Reading the book is not a requirement to attend – come and enjoy conversation with friends. “READING is to the MIND what exercise is to the BODY.” – Sir Richard Steele Cigar Club Enjoy a smoke… have dinner… play cards. Sounds like a great evening to me. Come to some or all of the events offered. Thursday March 24th at 6:00 p.m. Call the office for reservations. Solos We have entered into a new year and everything is going well. Congratulations go to Paul Kidd for accepting the position of Harbor Masters President. Congratulations Paul! The summer activities have started to line up and the Solos are booked for the second Harbor Masters Wednesday night dinner, so mark your calendars for May 25, 2016. Menu TBD. See you at the Club. Pat Jaccoud, Solos Chair 9 CHYC Golf Group We now have 26 men and 1 woman playing in the CHYC golf group. The last Thursday in January we were rained out, so we moved to the first Tuesday. After a lengthy fog delay, seven golfers played 15 holes before dark set in. We braved the high winds on the next Tuesday and seven golfers had a great time at Kingsway. We are going to continue to play on the second Tuesday and the fourth Thursday of each month. We are trying different courses including, St Andrews South, Twin Isles, Kingsway, and other courses in our area. We are looking for women to join our group as well as any other men who have not signed up as of yet. If you are interested in playing, contact Bob Wedemeyer at [email protected]. PICKLEBALL PICKLE ON!!!!! How do you like our new logo? Well, it’s true…at Charlotte Harbor Yacht Club you can play pickleball today and go boating tomorrow….but you can’t catch pickles unless you are playing!! What a month! Good (but cool) weather brought out the crowd and days where we had three and four players sitting out just waiting for an open court to play. Got enough balls and paddles…we just need some more courts. We think we can place four courts onto one tennis court. Need some research here. Next month we will try for some “candy box” tournaments…reach into the box for a partner to play a “round robin” where each team plays each other. Winners get pictured here so practice, practice! This month we feature technique….for the ladies who might want to try pickleball.. … here are two of our players using frying pan skills……………….see I told you it’s easy! 10 Membership The Membership Committee has been meeting weekly since the beginning of 2016 and plans to do so at least thru March. Our mantra, “Recruit and Retain” has the Committee focused on Open Houses, the Mentor Program, and searching for opportunities to work with existing members to promote new and revitalized club activates and events. Our January 24, 2016 Open House was well attended with a number of new members joining. WELCOME!! We are continuing to follow-up with prospective members. Our February 21, 2016 Open House had three audiences, the public, former members and current members. Former members were contacted by phone and letter, and current members were invited to a “Sneak Preview” before the Open House opened to the other groups so they could come and see all the Club has to offer. The next Open House is planned for March 6, 2016. The Mentor program has been well received and proving to be a successful tool to integrate new members into the Club. When selecting a mentor, we try to choose a CHYC member with similar interests, such as golf, Dragon Boating, cruising, etc . All the members of the Committee serve as mentors as well as other active CHYC members. It doesn’t take a great deal of time and we would welcome additional participation. Please contact Jeri Fine-Schaller at (941)888-0658 to learn more and to become a member. Being a mentor is a great way to make new friends and enjoy the Club.
