"Iranology" Session at
Parliament Library
The Parliament Library held a
session on "Iranology in the
World of Knowledge" which was attended by Dr. Bert Fragner, the Director of
the Institute of Iranian Studies of the
Austrian Academy of Sciences; Gholam
Ali Haddad-Adel, head of the Iranian
Academy of Persian Language and
Literature; Mohamamd Rajabi, the
Director of Parliament Library, Museum
and Document Center as well as a group
of scholars and academicians..
While delivering a speech at the session,
Fragner emphasized on the significance
of the Iranian civilization in the view of
the western scholars and urged for more
cooperation between the Iranian cultural
institutions with the Austrian counterparts and said "Scholars who work in the
field of Iranian studies, love Iran" adding
"The concept of Iranology emerged in the
west, and particularly in Europe, in the
19th century. The field was established
since the Europeans liked to study the
world and the East. The orientalists'
opinions accompanied political and economical objectives".
"Compared with an Iranian, a foreign
Iranologist is like a dwarf against a person. I always tell my students that whoever studies Iran, is fond of Iranian culture,
language and civilization as well as its literature. Finding the oldest language and
that which one is closer to the contemporary era are significant. For instance
some ancient Persian epigraphs were in
Avestan which is an old language and a
branch of Sanskrit. Accordingly, a competition started then in the world for
finding the oldest Indo-European languages other than Persian when Saka and
Sogdian were discovered", he added.
Fragner went on to say that Persian language is significant for Germans and thus
the Iranologists studied the works of classic literature particularly the Shahnameh
and Divan of Hafez which they believed
could help them learn the authentic
Persian language.
"In the late 18th and early 19th century,
orientalism or Islamology found another
concept as well, and the scholars studied
the texts since they intended to understand the Bible or the language of Jesus;
accordingly Arabic became significant as
well. The method was also used for
understanding Quran. The Christian
Science founded orientalism or
Islamology, Persian and Turkish languages were considered branches of
Arabic. In the late 19th and early 20th
century, issues related to Iranian culture,
arts and literature spread in Germany
while in U.K. many adored Persian art,
language and literature", he noted. Bert
Fragner is the Director of the Institute of
Iranian Studies of the Austrian Academy
of Sciences in Vienna. He received his
PhD in 1970 with his thesis "Hamadan
during the early Islamic period."
He travelled to Iran in 1964 and 1965
and studied Iran and its history by
notable scholars such as Iraj Afshar, Jafar
Mahboub and Zabihullah Sotoude. The
Austrian Iranologist also received Iran's
Dr. Mahmud Afshar Historical Literary
Award for his lifetime of research and
activities on Iran's history and culture.

Poupeh Mahdavi Nader,
writer of “The Peace Route”
and the first female Iranian
cyclist who made a worldwide tour,
said that she cycled the globe to convey
the message of love, friendship and
world peace, and raise funds for
Iranian orphans and underprivileged
children.
As IBNA reported PoupehMahdavi
Nader was the first Muslim female
cyclist going around the world with the
motto: "In the name of love, friendship
and global peace."
She started her journey some ten
years ago in April, 2003 in order to
gather support and raise funds for
orphaned children and the needy,
communicate with the youth in various countries and bringing their message to those in Iran as well as observing the manifestations of God on
earth. Her trip ended 16 months and 4
days later.
Talking about her book, she said that
the work is, in fact, a memoir which
holds several photos as well. The book
is indeed my trip's photos and memories, which was made for love, friendship and peace, she says.
Mahdavi Nader added: "A few hours
before my trip was to start, at 8 a.m.,
the U.S. bombing of Iraq began. So
instead of biking through Turkey and
Greece, I took a plane to Rome."
There, she went directly to the
Vatican, where she hoped to meet Pope
John Paul II. The Holy Father wasn't
available, but on Apr. 11, she had an
audience with Archbishop Renato
Martino, president of the Pontifical
Council for Justice and Peace, and by

Later that day she rode her bicycle
out of St. Peter's Square on an unusual
journey that later took her to France

south to New York and Washington.
She visited numerous other countries
including Japan, New Zealand, China,

the hardships on my path, I have also
experienced God's heaven on this
earth," she says.” You can see the light
of God in everything, and in all people."

"Metalworks of Mosul School

Historiographic
Analysis of
Shahnameh
As the first comprehensive
academic research on a
branch of Islamic Art conducted by an
Arab Muslim researcher, "Metalworks
of Mosul School in Safavid Era" was
translated to Persian by Mohammad
Afrouq and Masoud Ahmadi and published by Jamal Honar in 1000 copies
and 227 pages. Written by the Iraqi
researcher, Salah Husayn Al-Ubaydi,
the book is a survey of different types of
metalwork including metal vases,
astronomical instruments, candlesticks, stoups, pans and other
metal artworks of Mosul during the Safavid Era.
Metal Arts flourished during the fifth to seventh hijri
centuries of the IranianIslamic centuries. The art
made room for more creativity of Iranian artists of the
time who could apply various
techniques and instruments of
their time.
They were not only the most
beautiful artworks of their time but
also the best in terms of practicality.
This is the first valid academic
research on an important branch of
Islamic art by an Arab Muslim
researcher, especially when almost all
sources are written by western
researchers or Orientalists.
Through sophisticated analysis of pictures and images inscribed on these
artifacts, Al-Ubaydi proves his mastery
over Islamic history and culture.

First Academic Book on the
Romanticists of Iran
The book 'Iranian Romanticism: a survey of the
romantic movement in contemporary Persian Poetry'
is penned by Behzad Khajat to hit records of the first fully academic work on the influence of the Romantic School on Persian
poets.
As Iran book news agency reported Romanticism as a philosophical literary and artistic movement in the world history of
culture emerged during the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to revive the sensual and the emotional in western arts.
Romantic artists tried to realize their personal ideas unfettered
by traditional or classic frameworks.
Romanticism emerged first in England and then in Germany
and France and finally throughout Europe as a reaction to the
bourgeois society of the enlightenment. The romanticists paid
attention to their personal dreams and thoughts more than any
other artificial or unnatural drive; what they wrote was a reflection of the dream world. The romantic thought was first discussed in Jean Jacque Rousseau's Social Contract and John
Lock's Contemplations. It also owes much to the ideas of Hegel
and Schlegel. The movement also had deep effects on some contemporary Iranian literary and artistic movements. Poets such as
Fereydoon Tavalloli, Nima Youshij, Nader Naderpour, Esmail
Shahroudi, Sohrab Sepehri, Mohammad Zahri, Siavash Kasraei,
Hamid Mosaddegh, Golchin Guilani, and Pejman Bakhtiari
were among them. "Iranian Romanticism" is the first research
work ever written on this subject. In order to accomplish this
Behzad Khajat has cited about 170 sources and reviewed almost
all poems by Iranian romantic poets. The first chapter defines
the school and its characteristics and introduces the main figures
in these; the philosophy of romanticism, however, is missing in
the chapter.
Another problem in the theoretical framework is that in order
to elaborate on the ideas of Schlegel, Hegel or Rousseau, Khajat
refers to second-rate sources. And while the poems of Hossein
Pejman Bakhtiari as a significant Romanticist poet are neglected, his elaboration on Esmail Shahroudi as a revolutionary
romanticist is a positive quality - a poet that in spite of his avantgarde innovations had been taken for granted by the critics and
researchers alike. 'Iranian Romanticism: A survey of the romantic movement in contemporary Persian poetry' is penned by
Behzad Khajat and published by Bamdad-e-No in 1650 copies
and 237 pages. Khajat holds a PhD degree in Persian Language
and Literature and now teaches at Islamic Azad University of
Mahshahr.

Golden age of Greece Introduced in
‘The Age of Pericles’
Qoqnoos publisher has published a new volume in the
'World History' series entitled 'The Age
of Pericles'. The book is penned by Don
Nardo and translated by Fatemeh Eiji.
IBNA reported.
The Age of Pericles covers the events
of 479 to 431 B.C., the golden age of
Greece during which Athens comes to
its full political and cultural flourish.
The book emphasizes the stunning role
of Pericles in such an era in the history
of Greece and his cultural endeavors.
Pericles was the most prominent and
influential Greek statesman, orator, and
general of Athens during the Golden
Age-specifically, the time between the
Persian and Peloponnesian wars. He
was descended, through his mother,
from the powerful and historically influential Alcmaeonid family. Pericles had
such a profound influence on Athenian
society that Thucydides, his contemporary historian, acclaimed him as "the
first citizen of Athens". The period during which he led Athens is sometimes
known as the "Age of Pericles".
Pericles promoted the arts and literature; it is principally through his efforts
that Athens holds the reputation of
being the educational and cultural center of the ancient Greek world. He started an ambitious project that generated
most of the surviving structures on the
Acropolis. This project beautified the
city, exhibited its glory, and gave work
to the people. Pericles also fostered
Athenian democracy to such an extent
that critics call him a populist. The first
print of 'The Age of Pericles' penned by
Don Nardo and translated by Fatemeh
Eiji is published in 1500 copies by
Qoqnoos.

Yeganeh, executive manager of Allameh

Bioethics at the UNESCO Headquarters
in Paris issued a call for opinions on the
ethics of Human Genome Project to the
thinkers of various countries. The same
was sent to Allameh Jafari by the
UNESCO headquarters in Iran. The
Allameh's response came in the same year
giving rise to a number of new issues
about human nature and theoretical as
well as philosophical topics about human
beings. He had also intended to write a
complementary sequel to the response,
but failed to do it before his untimely
death. The book is now rendered in
English and is being published as the

on to add that the book further encompasses a response by the Allameh to
another question posed by the UNESCO
about a 1989 call for opinions from
UNESCO headquarters in Vancouver,
Canada. The English rendition of the
book is arranged in 143 pages and will be
published.
The other book, Intelligible Life, entails
Allameh Jafari's meticulous scrutiny of

Encyclopedia of Iranian Art and
Architecture released
Translated by Saleh Tabatabaei,
The Encyclopedia of Iranian Art
and Architecture contains a selection of
entries to Iranian Art in the 34-volume
Grove Art. As Iran book news agency
reported, Grove Art Encyclopedia is one of
the most comprehensive and significant
ones in the world.
"Grove Art" has got lengthy entries. Years
ago I came across the book and wondered
if I can elicit all the entries on Iranian art in
a single volume. As I studied the book I
selected entries on Iran and simultaneously began translating them to Persian,"
Tabatabaei said.
He started the translation in 2006 and
then signed a contract with the Academy
of Arts for its publication. The whole
process took more than four years.
He also referred to defects and mistakes
in the entries, saying "in order to correct
these entries I embarked on research.
Therefore, most pages of the book encompass footnotes, margins and corrections
inserted by the translator. I have also written articles in Persian and English to elaborate on these mistakes."
Sheila Blair and Jonathan Bloom's threevolume Encyclopedia of Islamic Art is
another up-to-date source for his research
parts of which are included in Tabatabaei's
translation. He further mentioned that the
geography of the Great Iran including a
large area of Mid Asia and Afghanistan
(Art in Heart, Bukhara, Balkh) has been
considered in the research.
"Grove Art is updated every six months;
so I proposed to the Academy of Arts to
publish next prints with a small booklet
containing the latest updates of the volume. Also the book only mentions worldknown artists while many eminent Iranian
artists are not included. I hope to add more
contemporary figures to the book in the
future," he added.
The Encyclopedia of Iranian Art and
Architecture is published in 1500 copies
and 800 pages by MATN (The Academy of

"Iran Holds Precious Sources
for Numismatic Books"
Malek National
Library
and
Museum recently added to its
numismatic sources the twovolume Sylloge of Sasanian
coins of the third to seventh centuries AD.
released by the Royal Numismatic Society
Special Publication- London published as
part of the "Sasanian Coin Project" conducted in collaboration with the
National Museum of Iran in
Tehran. While talking about the
condition of numismatics in
Iran, Ms. Vesta Sarkhosh
Curtis, Curator of Islamic and
Iranian Coins, Department of
Coins and Medals, British Museum
and one of the researcher involved
in the publication of the catalogue, said: "In Iran, numismatics is a new science which I
hope will find its place as an
individual field.
The rise of the publication of
numismatic books will indeed help
historians and archeologists improve their
knowledge. Iran can release great books,
which can be used throughout the world,
since it holds valuable coin sources". "In
order to study the coins, the researchers
need to touch them; however, such an
access isn't possible always. Therefore, the
publication of related books and catalogues
containing the pictures of the coins as well
as their features, will be handy for
researchers", she noted while adding
"When a special historical period of
time is being studied and its historical and cultural data is being
evaluated, the catalogues can easily present the information to the
researcher. These kinds of works
hold the latest information and they
are updated whenever new data is
found". She went on to say that
coins are among the precious
sources of history, archeology
and art studies. In Britain, besides
the publication of several related
articles and new findings, special
coin journals and calendars are
released as well. Sarkhosh Curtis believes
that numismatic related data should also be
presented online for the world. According
to her, the British Museum holds a rich collection of numismatic books. A budget is
annually allocated for purchasing books
which unfortunately has
decreased during the past
recent years due to financial
problems. Vesta Sarkhosh
Curtis is responsible for the
British Museum's collection of pre-Islamic
Iranian coins (from the third century BC

and Mohammad Hussein Hakim, codicologist, was speaking

were also delivering speeches during the workshop.
Iftikhar Hussain
Arif the newly
appointed President of the
ECO Cultural Institute
(ECI) met with head of
National Library and
Archives of Iran, Dr.
Eshagh Salahi. During the
meeting, he asserted that
the National Library of Iran
excels the US Congress
Library and many British
libraries in terms of its building, maintenance of reserves and
the variety of clients.
According to the public relations office of the National
Library and Archives of Iran, Salahi congratulated Arif for his
appointment as the new president of the Economic Cultural
Institute (ECI) of the ECO, and expressed gratitude over the
presence of a top cultural figure at Iran's National Library.
He hoped that the new appointment would bolster cultural
relations between Iran and Pakistan. "Cultural ties ease political, economic, and international blockades between countries,"
he asserted. He further added that Iran's National Library is the
only national library in the world that is open 24/7.
Salahi also noted that access to the library's reserves is possible through online and SMS messaging. "In terms of the number of visitors and clients, the library has a good status in comparison with Middle Eastern and even world national
libraries," he went on to add. Last year, he said, 685,000 clients
referred to the library, which compelled the library's staff to
consider new arrangements for allowing access to the great
number of visitors to the library.
For his part, Iftikhar Hussain Arif displayed remorse for the
lack any comprehensive effort in Pakistan to preserve manuscripts so far, and requested Iran to assist a cause in Pakistan to
form a movement in the same effect.
Salahi endorsed Arif 's proposal and suggested that all historical documents and manuscripts in Pakistan may be scanned
and digitalized by the National Library and Archives of Iran to
preserve them. Furthermore, Salahi highlighted the significance of the references available in the region and posited that
most of them are either in Persian or Arabic and are written
mostly by Iranian writers which should be mustered by the
ECO in an effort to preserve them for future generations.
Iftikhar Hussein Arif, former head of the Academy Adbiyat
(the Pakistan Academy of Letters) and Muqtadra Quami
Zaban (the National Language Authority), voiced readiness to
welcome Salahi's offer, and underscored the necessity of preserving manuscripts.
