The year 2013 marks the exciting 100th anniversary of founding the historic Wabash
YMCA on 37th and S. Wabash. The Chicago landmark-designated Wabash YMCA was
closed in the late 1970's and early 1980's, but reopened and rededicated to the community
in 2001 when The Renaissance Collaborative - whose mission is "to promote selfsufficiency through an innovative and comprehensive network of supportive housing,
employment, and educational services" completed a successful campaign to restore this
storied institution to its former glory.

Today the Wabash YMCA is 1 of 9 anchoring structures in the Black MetropolisBronzeville Historic District. It was designated as a Historical Landmark on September 9,
1998 and has once again become a vital center of community life on Chicago's Mid-South
Side. Year-round, The Renaissance Collaborative offers affordable housing and on-thejob training for people with limited resources, functioning just as it did 100 years ago for
new arrivals coming from the South during the "Great Migration" of African Americans.

Proceeds from the 2013 Gala will support The Renaissance Collaborative's life changing
affordable housing programs at the Wabash YMCA along with our comprehensive
emergency crisis intervention programs, health and wellness programs, youth and senior
recreation opportunities, adult education and year-round employment readiness and
training.

14th ANNUAL HONOREES
Bridge Builder Award: Elzie Higginbottom
Mr. Higginbottom, currently the President of East Lake Management & Development Corp. and its subsidiary
East Lake Management Group, Inc., is respected among his peers for both his commercial and residential work,
and has been recognized in numerous trade and news publications as a major developer within the Chicago
Metropolitan Area. In recognition of his property management expertise, Elzie received the coveted "Minority
Entrepreneur of the Year" Award from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development in 1984. He was
the first recipient of that prestigious award. In 2000, Mr. Higginbottom was inducted into the Chicago Association
of Realtors (CAR) Hall of Fame for his work in redeveloping numerous Chicago communities - Bronzeville being
amongst the list.
Cornerstone Award: The Reverend James Sr. & Corlis Moody
The Reverend James Sr. & Corlis Moody have been married over 39 years and instrumental in the Bronzeville
community's growth. The Reverend James M. Moody is the current senior Pastor of Quinn Chapel African
Methodist Episcopal Church of Chicago, Illinois - an appointment he accepted in January 2002. Prior to entering
full time ministry in 1996, Moody was employed by General Mills, Inc. of Minneapolis, MN for over 15 years and
held roles such as Director of Corporate Diversity and EEO, and Controller for West-Coast Manufacturing and
Distribution Operations of the Consumer Foods and Food Service Divisions of the Corporation. The Reverend
Moody's leadership roles extend beyond the walls of Quinn Chapel to a number of outside involvements that
include the positions of Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the African Methodist Episcopal Church of Chicago.
Moody is also the Vice President and Chair of the Finance Committee for The Renaissance Collaborative, an
outspoken advocate for "Unite Here Local 1," established and operated for three years, Soccer on State, lead in
establishing "Fresh Start - Don't Look Back", Advisory Board member and spokesperson for Mid-West Office of
Partners for Sacred Places, Chair of Quinn Community Services Alliance of Chicago.
Corlis Moody's primary role with Quinn Chapel is the External Campaign Chair for the restoration of the oldest
Black Church in Chicago. In the past three years, she has raised over $600,000.00 in grants from various
foundations and government. In addition, she is a member of the Women of Quinn, the missionary society, and
wherever she is needed. Mrs. Corlis Moody has served as a Presidential Appointee during the Clinton
administration and as the Director of Civil Rights for the State of Iowa and is now devoted full time to the work of
God at Quinn Chapel AME Church. She is the president of the Chicago Conference Women's Missionary Society
and was the Chair of the World Leaders Luncheon held in Toronto, Canada in September, 2009. She is the past
president of the Chicago Conference Ministers Spouses and Widows Alliance. She served on the board of One
Family One Child of Illinois and worked to place incarcerated youth in foster homes. She is the new co-chair of
Partners for Sacred Places Chicago and one of the Illinois Advisors to the National Trust for Historic Places.
Joan Wood Award: Judge William Cousins, Jr.
For 26 years, Judge William Cousins, Jr., presided as a judge on the IL Appellate Court and the Cook County
Circuit Court. He was appointed to various positions, including chairman of the IL Judicial Conference and as a
member of the Special Supreme Court Committee on Capital cases. While working as a judge, Cousins also served
as Chairman of the IL Judicial Council, Chairman of the Judicial Council of the National Bar Association and as a
board member of the National Center for State Courts. Cousins also served his county for twenty years in the
army, both active and reserved, and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. He is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi and
Sigma Pi Phi Fraternities, Trinity United Church of Christ, and is in the halls of fame of the National Bar
Association, Cook County Bar Association and DuSable High School.

Micah Materre of WGN News at Nine
Micah Materre was named anchor of WGN News at Nine in October 2009. While at WGN, she has
covered entertainment news and special assignment stories. In addition to anchoring, Micah is also the
producer of the "Chicago's Very Own" segment for WGN News and she is the host of WGN's public
affairs program, "People to People." She began her career in broadcasting in 1983 at NPR affiliate,
WBEZ radio in Chicago, producing and reporting for four years. In addition, Micah taught radio
production at Columbia College. Recognized for her excellent work as a journalist, Micah is an Emmy
Award winner and has been honored by the Michigan Association of Broadcasters. She has also been
featured in several national publications, including the New York Times Magazine, Glamour, Ebony,
Good Housekeeping, Today's Chicago Woman, 'Who's Who' in Black Chicago, and Michigan Avenue
Magazine. She serves as commentator, mistress of ceremonies and honorary chairperson to several
community and civic organizations across Chicagoland. Micah is on the Board of Directors for the
Chicago Children's Choir and the Chicago Child Care Society. She is a member of the civic organization,
Links, Incorporated, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and the Natl. Association of Black Journalists.

Greta Pope, International Entertainer
Greta Pope is International entertainer. She has delighted audiences throughout Europe, the Far East,
South America and the Caribbean, as well as the United States and Canada. Ms. Pope has been touted as
one of the great voices of our time, as she performs with ease all styles from Country to Opera, and from
Rhythm and Blues to Broadway. Ms. Pope captures every audience…performing songs in English,
French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Yiddish, Serbian and Gypsy. Ms. Pope holds a Master of Music
Degree and has performed all styles of music. Greta is an entertainer as well as the leader of the Greta
Pope Orchestra. Her performance credentials include sharing the stage with such well known
performers as Wynonna Judd, Dick Van Dyke, Stanley Clarke, Carol Channing, Ramsey Louis, Rich
Little, Penn & Teller and many more. Greta Pope is committed to community and is actively involved in
many Local, National and International organizations including Children's Home and Aid Society of IL,
The Links, Incorporate, Jack and Jill of America, The International Visitors Center of Chicago,
Advocate Health Care, Mitzi Friedheim Englewood Child and Family Center, Apna Ghar and Ronald
McDonald House.
The Peace Generation Band
The Peace Generation Band has been performing in Chicagoland for over 30 years. The band members
started their band in 8th grade at Mary Mace Dodge Elementary School! They play a variety of genres
with a focus on the blues. The members include Calvin Williams - Rhythm Guitar, Bernard Crump Lead Guitar, Danny Barrett - Keyboard Player, Michael Rally - Bass Player, and Arthur Irby - Drums.
