A Summer of Extraordinary Experiences
at Our Extraordinary Museum!
Summer is almost here and it’s heating
up inside The Children’s Museum as
we unveil our exciting, all-new exhibit,
Hot Wheels™: Race to Win™ on May 9.
The exhibit taps into Indiana’s love for
racing and the state’s leadership role in
international motorsports. Hot Wheels:
Race to Win lets children and families
experiment with the real science,
technology, engineering, and math
concepts used in auto racing, using
Hot Wheels cars and track as tools.
Produced by The Children’s Museum
in partnership with Mattel, Inc.,
Hot Wheels: Race to Win debuts in
Indianapolis and then begins a five-year
tour of children’s museums across North
America. Destined to become a family
favorite, it will return to The Children’s
Museum each year in May.
world each year, and help us begin
to appreciate the sacred journeys of
diverse peoples.
Through stunning photography from
National Geographic and immersive
environments, visitors will be able
to observe, discuss, and begin to
understand pilgrimages to places such
as the Western Wall and Church of
the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, the
Great Mosque in Mecca, the Ganges
River in India, Uluru in the Australian
outback, and more. Authentic artifacts
will enrich the experience, including
fragments of the Dead Sea scrolls, a
stone from the Western Wall, and ritual
objects taken into space by astronaut
and Extraordinary Scientist-inResidence Dr. David Wolf.
National Geographic
Sacred Journeys
The summer excitement continues
with exhibits like Inside Hollywood
Film & TV! You’re on the Set and
TRANSFORMERS: Robots in Disguise™;
both are open through July 26. And
then, as the summer draws to a close,
we will present the ambitious new
exhibit National Geographic Sacred
Journeys, opening Aug. 29.
A Museum for Everyone
As a member, you know how important
the museum experience is to your
family, and people all across the U.S.A.
know it too. The museum has received
many accolades in recent years, and in

of FamilyFun magazine as a one of the
nation’s Top 10 Vacation Destinations,
one of the Midwest’s Top 2 Regional
Favorite Destinations, and one of the
nation’s Top 3 Science Museums!
Created by The Children’s Museum in
partnership with National Geographic,
Sacred Journeys will give children
and families insight into some of the
personal journeys of faith made by
more than 330 million around the
Of course, the museum’s mission is to
bring extraordinary family learning
experiences to all children and families,

Real Racing, Real Fast, Real Fun!
Know Your
Racing League!
Real-World Racing
Formula One
Hot Wheels™: Race to Win™ takes you behind the scenes
of some of the world’s most popular and dynamic racing
leagues—such as Formula One, IndyCar, NASCAR, and
NHRA drag racing—to discover what it takes to stand in the
winner’s circle. And you’ll use Hot Wheels™ cars and track to
test and demonstrate racing concepts.
MAY 9–AUG. 16
Presented by
Supported by
Sleek racecars surge down the straights at thrilling speeds, banking into steep turns.
Their engines whine, rumble, and roar!
Pit crews work at a lightning-fast pace to keep their teams on top.
And fans rise to their feet, cheering for more!
This is the excitement of auto racing, which brings together science, technology, engineering, and math to
build and run the fastest speed machines on Earth—but it takes a team to race and win!
Now YOU and your family can be part of the team with Hot Wheels™: Race to Win™, the all-new exhibit
from The Children’s Museum.
The exhibit is divided into four zones that include interactives,
artifacts, and Hot Wheels track tables!
• Explore speed in the Green Zone. See who has the fastest car at the track table, and test your tire-changing speed in the family Pit Stop Challenge!
• Experience racing power in the Yellow Zone. Learn the unique sounds of different racecar engines.
• Design in the Blue Zone. Learn how car body design affects speed and then make the calls on race day using
adjustable Hot Wheels tracks!
• Check for safety in the Red Zone. Race down Hot Wheels track at top speeds and make your jump
without crashing!
An Intergenerational Experience
IndyCar, NASCAR, Formula One, NHRA drag racing . . . these
are just a few of the styles of motorsports that are beloved
all across the U.S., and especially in Indiana—home to the
Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Indianapolis 500.
Combine that local love of racing with generations of
Hot Wheels fans, and you and your family will make and
share great memories in Hot Wheels: Race to Win! And,
for the next five years, the exhibit will tour to other
children’s museums around the U.S., returning each May
to The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis.

Each year, more than 330 million people
around the world—from all walks of life—
journey to a sacred place. They make
pilgrimages to spaces and places their
faith traditions hold dear. Some seek
enlightenment, some seek healing, and
some perform acts of faith.

Here’s how it works: An actor is filmed in front of a
big screen or wall that is painted green. Then special

image the filmmaker chooses. So if you were to film
the space explorer running in front of a green screen,
the green could be removed and replaced with a

You and your family will love this Caribbean musical
adaptation of the classic Hans Christian Andersen fairy
tale! It’s a big day on the tiny island of Little Iguana: it’s
young Jasmin’s birthday. Her wish is to spend the day
making sand castles and to try on the beautiful sash her
father bought for her. But the Emperor sets all the fashion
standards and poor Jasmin’s big day doesn’t stand a chance
against the thrills of the runway. Then a “magic” tailor
swims ashore and he has his own ideas for a clothing
line. This charming version features songs in Caribbean
calypso, reggae, and ska styles, which all help to make the
point that clothes don’t make the human!

Anne Frank and the Remembering Tree
The Story Behind the Book
Written for children 6 to 9 years
old, it tells Anne’s story from
the tree’s perspective, moving
from the days before the Nazi
occupation of the Netherlands,
to the day the Franks were arrested,
to Otto Frank’s recovery of Anne’s
diary, to the establishment of the
Secret Annex as The Anne
Frank House.
Sasso, a nationally recognized
author, wanted to write the book
as soon she learned that the first
sapling from Anne’s tree planted in
the U.S. would be in Indianapolis
on the grounds of The Children’s
Museum. The sapling was planted
in 2013.
This is the story of Anne Frank and her sister Margot, who loved a tree,
and the tree that promised never to forget them.
I
magine that for two full years all
you had was one window, and
all you could see of the outside
world were rooftops, a majestic tree
set against the sky, and occasionally
a bird or two flying by.
childrensmuseum.org | 317-334-4000
From 1942 to 1944, Anne Frank,
her family, and others hid from
the Nazis in a Secret Annex in
Amsterdam. During those years,
the branches and leaves of a large
horse chestnut tree were almost
all Anne and her sister Margot
saw of the city where they once
played and went to school.
22
Because of Anne and her diary,
the world remembers that horse
chestnut tree. Now, thanks to Rabbi
Sandy Eisenberg Sasso, we can
imagine what that very special
tree knew about Anne in her new
children’s book, Anne Frank and
the Remembering Tree.
Selected to receive a sapling by
The Anne Frank Center USA,
the museum was chosen because
of its commitment to continuing
education about tolerance,
including the groundbreaking
exhibit The Power of Children:
Making a Difference. Anne Frank,
Ruby Bridges, and Ryan White
are the three children whose
stories of courage in the face of
discrimination are told through
the exhibit.
As Sasso’s book began to take
shape, she learned new things
about the Frank family’s story,
including something that surprised
her: Margot also kept a diary.
“That diary was lost,” Sasso said
recently, “so it was important for
me to reference it in the story.
Margot also had a full, rich life,
and we need to remember that.”
In August 1944, Nazis raided
the Secret Annex and the Franks
were sent to concentration camps,
where all but Otto perished. When
he returned to Amsterdam, his
friend Miep Gies gave him Anne’s
diary, which she had recovered after
the raid. It was published in 1947,
and in 1960 the Secret Annex was
opened to the public as The Anne
Frank House, a historic house and
museum, where people from all
over the world could come and see
the tree and remember Anne,
Margot, and all who suffered and
died during the Holocaust.
The Importance
of Remembrance
Weakened by disease, Anne’s
170-year-old horse chestnut tree
was blown down in a storm in 2010.
Fortunately, the Anne Frank
Center USA had already launched
the project to plant saplings
throughout the United States. As
the tree tells us in Anne Frank and
The Remembering Tree, “I was
just one tree, but now I am
many. People planted my
saplings in places around
the world as reminders
of what happened
to Anne and Margot.”
Sandy Eisenberg Sasso is an
award-winning author of 13
children’s books. Rabbi Emerita of
Congregation Beth-El Zedeck, she
is presently the director of The
Religion, Spirituality and Arts
Initiative at Butler University. There
are more than half a million copies
of her books in print.
Anne Frank and the Remembering
Tree was illustrated by Erika Steiskal,
a Seattle-based artist and recipient
of a gold medal from the Society of
Illustrators in Los Angeles.
23
Remembrance is at the core of the
book. Anne Frank has been gone
for 70 years, but as Sasso says,
“Just when we think nothing is
left, there is still the story. When
we tell a person’s story, that life is
renewed. Even though Anne is
gone, her words and her story
remain.” The same is true of
Anne’s tree, she notes. “There
might have been nothing left,
but instead there are places
to remember.”
Anne Frank and The Remembering
Tree was published by The
Children’s Museum of
Indianapolis and Skinner
House books. It is available
in The Children’s Museum Store
and through major bookstores.
The author, The Children’s
Museum, and Skinner House books
are grateful to Lori Efroymson and
the Efroymson Family Foundation
for their generous support, which
made the book possible, and for
their vision for a better future for
all our children.
