Stone Paver Circular Driveway 4 September 8, 2014 Pinewood News Flagstaff Tasting Tour is Latest Foodie Sensation By Stacey Wittig Vagabonding Lulu Travel Writer Last month I grazed my way around downtown Flagstaff in the city’s latest foodie sensation: Flagstaff Eats tasting tour. I experienced tastings at seven different restaurants that were the equal to a full meal. A professional guide led our unique tasting experiences. Even though I have lived here for twenty years, the tour took me to eateries where I had never been, and the tour opened my palate to plates that I had never tried before. “Flagstaff Eats tours are perfect for out-of-town visitors who just have a short time in town, but want to experience many of the great restaurants that Flagstaff has to offer. The tours are also great for locals who always go to the same restaurants, or who order the same thing at their favorite restaurants. This stretches them a bit,” said Ariel Mierendorf, our cheery guide who gave us the inside scoop on local’s favorites. “We’re supporting local businesses, and we’re showing people places in Flagstaff that they might not have otherwise found,” Ariel continued as she lead us from our meeting spot at Flag Buzz Coffeehouse on San Francisco Local flavor: Charly's mini Navajo Taco Street to Karma Sushi Bar and Grill on old Route 66. The tour is mapped out rather well, with just short walks between the restaurants. But by the end of the two and a half hour tour, we had walked approximately a mile and a half without even noticing. The tour is stroller and wheelchair friendly as we typically stayed outside the eateries. Karma’s taste treat was one of their signature rolls, The Godzilla, made with tempura Maine lobster tail, avocado, cucumber and snow crab. Unfortunately, this Vagabonding ASPEN ANNIE’S LANDSCAPING, INC Lulu is allergic to lobster, so I had to pass-a-Rooney on the tempting appetizer. “Let us know about any food allergies upfront,” said Ariel, “And we can order accordingly.” Next it was across the tracks on San Francisco Street passing the historic train depot for our subsequent stop at NiMarco’s Pizza. As we walked, Ariel filled us in on Flagstaff history and pointed out "Popeye" gourmet pizza at other noteworthy restaurants. “Right along San NiMarco's is one way to eat your spinach! Francisco Street, we have over five Thai restaurants – and they are all busy. Flagstaff loves their Thai food,” she explained. I could tell that NiMarco’s made their sauce and dough fresh each day by tasting my Popeye slice – made with spinach, of course. I was in such food bliss that I kind of lost track of where we went next. But I do remember a taste of that Flagstaff favorite Thai food at Swadee Thai, a sit-down inside Charly’s for a mini Fry Bread taco, olive oil tastings at the Olive Oil Traders and a Fred Flintstonesized meaty rib at Big Foot BBQ. Bigfoot is one of my fave restaurants in town, yet I never experienced their ribs, moist cornbread or the BBQ and jalapeno quesadilla – all Flagstaff's Sweet Shoppe that was part of our tasting. I’m one of those that always and Nut House provides order the same thing – the Junkyard Dawg, an Andouille dessert for the tasting tour. sausage piled high with pulled pork and slaw – so the tour did its trick and got me to stretch out of my comfort zone. Dessert was The Sweet Shoppe and Nut House’s famous caramel apples, conveniently cut up for all to share. I highly recommend the Flagstaff Eats tour. The company was started by the same local folks who have been operating the Alpine Pedaler in Flagstaff for the past three years. September 8, 2014 Pinewood News LINE by Jan Toth SEPTEMBER IS PREPAREDNESS MONTH We’ve had a good Monsoon season so wildfires are low on our list of things we need to be prepared for, although, it should still be in the back of our minds you never know! What else do we need to be prepared for? Are you kidding? 5 e Dav CANTRELL CoNsTRuCTioN CompANy 928-286-9599 • Cell 928-606-6608 Licensed General Contractor Specializing in Remodels & Additions. ROC593 23 • Bon ded • P .O. Box 18432 • Munds Park, AZ 86017 There are always things that can happen that we need to be prepared for. For instance Power failures: We see that here in Pinewood every time we have a thunderstorm. In fact, one summer some of the power was out for two or three days in a row. If you have an electric stove, how would you cook? Do you know how long you can leave food in a freezer with no power before food starts to thaw? It depends on several factors. 1. How full the freezer is. 2. How often you open the door. 3. The freezer insulation itself A full freezer will stay frozen longer than one only half full. If you open the door, that cuts the time in half. However, someone posted that the food in their freezer stayed completely frozen for four to five days. I’ve had mine stay frozen for several days when the door wasn’t properly shut. It will also depend on the time of year. In the winter, my food would stay frozen longer with no heat. In the winter, when we have a lot of snow or rain and cold making ice, the power can go out for hours and even days. One January, the power was out in some parts of Munds Park for seven days. That’s right, a full week. What can you do? Get a generator. Either a small portable one to power a couple of things or a more expensive one that will power multiple appliances and rooms in your home. For a less expensive solution, check into a location to get dry ice. Food in your fridge on the other hand will only stay fresh about half a day. The refrigerator door also should be left shut to keep the food cold. ROAD CLOSURES This can happen both in the summer and in the winter. In the summer months you can end up along the highway stopped in traffic for a long, long time due to accidents. Are you prepared for that long, long time? Summer, you should make sure you have plenty of water in the car. In the winter it’s even more important to be prepared. Roads can be snowy, icy and dangerous, making for even more danger of accidents blocking the road. Then you have the possibility of getting stuck in a snow drift on the highway. You need to have warm clothes on (shorts and sandals are not warm clothes north of the scenic view), plenty of water, food or snacks, blankets, gloves and a shovel. Even though they are not using cinders on the highway anymore, there are still a lot of cinders along the road to help you get traction if needed. Use that shovel to through cinders under your tires. The snow plows have a new policy and your cul-de-sac may be the last one to get plowed when they get there in a couple of days…. Make sure you have food and water. Again, if the storm causes the power to go out, you will need something to cook on (think BBQ – but outside ONLY). So make sure you have food, water and lots of warm blankets. In the “olden” days, homes had fireplaces and wood stoves for heat, but more and more people are going to furnaces and when the powers out, there is no heat. We’ve talked about “go bags” this year for wildfire preparedness but what if there was a semi accident with hazardous materials? You might need to evacuate quickly and still need that “go bag” packed and ready to go. The other option might be to “shelter in place.” "Shelter-in-place" means to take immediate shelter where you are—at home, work, school, or in between. It may also mean "seal the room;" in other words, take steps to prevent outside air from coming in. This is because local authorities may instruct you to "shelter-in-place" if chemical or radiological contaminants are released into the environment. It is important to listen to TV or radio to understand whether the authorities wish you to merely remain indoors or to take additional steps to protect yourself and your family. This is where that handydandy hand powered weather and emergency radio comes in. So there are a lot more emergencies that can happen that we need to be prepared for. Take September and make those plans ahead of the next emergency. Get a “go bag” ready, put emergency supplies in the trunk of your car and make sure you have food/snacks in your car and home. Summer here in Pinewood is so glorious we hate to see it go. As the weather gets cooler we think of warm soups and stews. What could be better than a bowl of wonderful soup with a salad and some hearty bread? Here are some recipes you may find interesting and tasty. The first recipe has beef broth poured over browned and seasoned cubes of beef. Add the veggies and spices for a hearty soup cooked in a slow cooker for 8 hours. Beef and Barley Soup in the Slow Cooker 1 ½ pounds boneless beef *** 3 tablespoons oil Salt and pepper to taste 2 tesp garlic powder 3 (10 oz.) beef broth 5 cups water 4 stalks celery 6 carrots 6 green onion, chopped ½ cup parsley 1 cup barley In a skillet sauté the beef until browned. Add salt pepper and garlic powder and put browned meat in slow cooker. For extra flavor add a little water or wine to pick up the brown bits in the skillet and add to slow cooker. Add the broth, water, celery, carrots, green onion, parsley and barley. Cover and cook on low for 6-8 hours, garnish with a little sour cream. ***For a “budget-helper” meal you can use tenderized beef steaks found in any meat counter. Do you have memories of a warm rich chicken noodle soup? Especially if you were sick or had a cold. Chicken soup is touted to have healing power but I have never read any medical reports that state this is really true. However, it kind of fun to believe you can get better on something that tastes good. This soup is also made in the slow cooker so you can enjoy the aroma while you visualize getting over your cold. Creamy Chicken Noodle Soup 1 store bought roasted chicken (how easy is that) 1 cup diced onions 1 cup diced celery 1 cup diced carrots 4 cans (12 oz.) low sodium chicken broth 2 cans (10 oz) condensed cream of mushroom soup 1 teaspoon Italian spices Salt and pepper to taste 2 cups egg noodles, cooked Remove skin and bones from roasted chicken and shred the meat. Put the chicken, onions, celery and carrots in slow cooker. Add the broth, soup and spices. Mix well and cover and cook for 3-4 hours on high setting or 8-9 hours on low. When cooked add the egg noodles and serve. Landscapes by Lacey Design•Build•Maintain Thanks This is my all time favorite soup recipe and I want to share it with you. Don’t blow this recipe off when you look at the long list of ingredients because you will be missing a real treat. I make this in a pressure cooker because it is faster but you can get the same result by cooking it longer on top of the stove. Southwestern Chicken and Corn Chowder ¼ pound of bacon, cut into pieces ¼ cup olive oil 1 large onion, diced 3 garlic cloves, chopped 2 whole chicken breasts (can have bone in) 1 can (16 oz.) crushed tomatoes ¾ cup salsa 1 green bell pepper, coursely chopped 2 cup chicken broth ½ tsp crushed red pepper flakes 2 packages (10 oz.) frozen kernel corn ½ cup chopped cilantro 2 tablespoon sherry 3 tablespoon flour 1 cup half and half Sauté bacon in pressure cooker until crisp. Add oil, onion and chicken and cook for 3 minutes. Stir in tomatoes, salsa, bell pepper, broth and red pepper flakes. Close lid and bring pressure up to cooking heat. Reduce heat and maintain pressure for 6 minutes or cook on top of stove for about 20 minutes. When you can open pressure cooker remove chicken and remove bone and skin and cut into bit size pieces. Add chicken pieces, corn, cilantro and sherry to pressure cooker and simmer without pressure for 5 minutes. To thicken soup add flour to half and half and shake until well blended. Gradually add to soup and heat until slightly thick. You may need to add a little more sherry for flavor. Serve with corn chips and shredded cheese. Did You Know: Got high blood pressure? Here is a new tip. Eat celery. Researchers at the University of Chicago Medical Center showed that a small amount of a compound found in celery called 3-n-butyl phthalide (don’t worry this won’t be in your final exam) can lower blood pressure in test animals by 12 to 14 percent. Researchers found as little as two stalks daily for 2 week dropped their blood pressure significantly. Don’t throw out the leaves they are the most nutritious part so put them in the soup recipes. In a small ceremony, held on July 25, 2014, Bob Blum, 94, received the purple heart for an injury he suffered during the bombing of Pearl Harbor on Dec 7, 1941. It included dignataries and a State Senator. Friday, August 28th about Noon Bob enlisted in the army in 1939, he was interested in traveling and a recruiter overheard him and his friend saying they wanted “to see the world.” The recruiter spoke to them about their interests and wooed them with the idea of seeing the world for “free”and what a better place to see it but in Hawaii. Bob and his friend enlisted and joined the Army in 1939. He became an instructor after he completed basic training, air mechanics and aircraft instrument school. On December 7th manuers were canceled and the bombings began. During the attack, Bob and a fellow soldier set up a machine gun station. He left to get more ammo and water for the maching gun. He came back to find his fellow soldier injured and the Robert "Bob" Blum, a World War Two Veteran and Pearl Harbor survivor, receives a purple heart, during a ceremony gun he was using destroyed by the bombings. He felt at the V.F.W. Post 1790 in Flagstaff on July 25th. The medal was pinned to Blum by Col. Jay Vargas, USMC very lucky that day but suf(ret.), a Medal of Honor recipient, and five-time Purple ferered an injury that would Heart recipient. Picture by Taylor Mahoney/AZ Daily Sun change his military future. It was during a physical that he needed to get before attending flight school. Doctor’s who examined him couldn’t believe their eyes. Bob has shattered his eardrums and also his hopes of going to flight school. Man late 50’s early 60’s, 200 pounds, driving a light green Toyota SUV approximately a 2009, strong armed and demanded $100.00 cash. He was holding the woman by both her wrists and cursing. The man keyed the elderly lady’s car. There was another young man that saw what was happening and came to the situation and physically removed the assailant at which time the woman got in her car and went home out of fear. The family of the elderly lady would like to thank the man that helped their mother. If you have any information about the incident at all please call Gail 623-670-0255. Why Did Woody’s Close ? After his injury was discovered he returned to the states and trained incoming recruits for the field. He received numerous medals but did not think of receiving the Purple Heart. Billy Weldon, also a Munds Park summer resident, played an important role for Bob being awarded the Purple Heart. Billy is the state commander of the Military Order of the Purple Heart. He will also help Bob retrieve lost medals from years past. Bob Blum doesn’t want to make a big fuss over his military duty, but when I speak with him, you can see the pain he experienced and loss of fellow soldiers in his eyes. He gave 20 years of his life to the Army and survived an attack that lives on in infamy. ““I still call it my unlucky medal,” Blum said. “The lucky ones weren’t wounded.” WE ARE THE LUCKY ONES Bob! To hear your story and to know you are a part of history... CONGRATULATIONS ! We are very honored to know you and so proud of your dedication to our country! Woody’s Convenience Store I have been getting alot of questions in regards to the closing of the convenience store Woody’s located on Pinewood Blvd. I contacted the corporate office and the person I spoke to said, “Due to lack of help, they decided to close the store.” This closure is isolated strictly to Munds Park and their other 19 stores will remain in business. It is a very sad thing to see happen and I wish I had more details but that was all that was told to me. September 8, 2014 Pinewood News Important Community Meeting on County Road Maintenance Services Supervisor Matt Ryan is hosting a community meeting at 6:30 pm on Thursday, October 2 at the Pinewood Country Club to provide information on the County’s Road Maintenance Sales Tax, Proposition 403, which is on the November ballot. The information at this meeting will include how Prop. 403 will impact routine road maintenance services and proposed projects in Munds Park. The Coconino County Board of Supervisors decided to refer the question of a sales tax for road maintenance services to the ballot this November after two years of in-depth research along with input from a Citizens Transportation Advisory Committee (CTAC). The Board concluded that, even after reducing permanent costs by $2 million per year, Coconino County doesn’t have the funds needed to maintain its roads as it does now. Why is the County road maintenance sales tax on the ballot? More than 70 percent of the County’s road maintenance funding comes from the gasoline tax. The gas tax has not been raised since the early 1990s, which means the County’s gas tax revenues are near 1998 revenue levels. The gas tax is a “flat” tax that is neither indexed to inflation nor linked to the price of gasoline. Also, County property taxes do not fund road maintenance. Without additional funding, there will be up to a 40% reduction in routine road maintenance services, such as snow plowing, grading dirt roads and filling potholes. The County would also significantly reduce its annual investment in paved road maintenance projects, including projects planned for Munds Park. The County encourages Munds Park residents to come to this critical meeting so you have the information to make an important decision regarding the level of road maintenance services in Munds Park. Weekenders try to plan their exits to experience the least bumper-to-bumper traffic on the freeway back to the Valley of the Sun. I do feel sorry for them, driving back to triple-digit temperatures. Oh well, JABDIP (Just Another Beautiful Day in Paradise) What I don’t understand is how few of these people come back for the rest of September and the month of October. I know Zumba and Tai Chi are over as well as the Lady Putters and cards at the club end in September. Karaoke and Happy Hour will cease soon. The Pinewood Players take a break after September 7, when my play “Brownies” premieres at Cabaret Nights. I did pick the last apples off my tree but the flowers in my garden are still blooming. These are the best months of the year in Munds Park. While people and cars are still sizzling I am putting on the flannel sheets for the cool nights while enjoying walks in the woods with daytime highs in the seventies. There isn’t much wind and not too much rain. I get to enjoy autumn. Although the pine trees don’t turn colors, the maples, oaks, aspens, and many others do. It reminds me of my childhood in New Jersey except no one has to rake the leaves and burning piles of them is forbidden. Did you ever jump into piles of leaves or slosh through them? I loved it at the end of fall, when the leaves were crunchy and brown. I stomped on them to savor the sound. By the beginning of October it is a bit nippy in the mornings. Luckily my dogs sleep longer since sunrise is later. It isn’t hard to conserve energy. I put the Annie dressed for a morning walk bedroom heater on a half hour before I retire for the night. I turn it off upon arising and turn on the living room wall heaters so the room will be toasty when the dogs and I return from our walk. I do have a wall heater in the bathroom that makes taking a shower a delight. Note to self: remember to get a new electric blanket. The old one only works on the dogs’ side of the bed. I’ve included a selfie of what I look like on a cold winter morning this past April. I’ll look the same come Med-October. JABDIP! Oak Drive - $76,800 Pinewood News “Sales Surge” Awesome August pushes sales totals and Spectacular September is Anticipated “ Broker Tidbits” By Bill Spain, Provident Partners Realty,Designated Broker Who says that rain inhibits sales? Quite the opposite; the rainy days of August kept the fires at bay, the golfers off the courses and the buyers in full swing as Munds park experienced twenty one sales closing in the month totaling $4, 554,250 in sales. The days on market fell to an average of 119 and the inventory of homes and lots on the market decreased by the largest margin in many years. September is on track to be an even bigger gangbuster month with $6,246, 850 worth of various forms of pending, pending taking back-up and active with contingency sales in the hopper in only the first week of the month. There are thirty-two homes and lots under some form of contract as of this writing. The inventory in the park has reduced from a high of about 250 properties on the market to 168 dwellings and 29 lots/land. Sellers are obtaining 94% of their asking price as a year to date average, suggesting that the inventory of homes is still somewhat overpriced. Traditional averages denote that seller’s obtain approximately 97% of asking price when properties are priced to the market norms. The high pending sale on the market right now is priced at $449,000 and the low at $56,000. There are several very well priced larger properties on the market that have taken reductions in the last month and are seeing a high level of activity and interest. Online marketing techniques continue to be extremely important in luring buyers to Munds Park with the higher priced property buyers emanating from listings hosted through Phoenix MLS sources. Provident Partners Realty offers all of our clientele listings in both Northern MLS and greater metropolitan Phoenix MLS, insuring that your property is viewed by Phoenix REALTORS…which is very beneficial to the sellers. We are always happy to provide a personalized comparative market analysis to Munds park homeowners and present how we will market your home to achieve the highest possible sales price for our clients. Please feel free to call me at 602-622-1196 to schedule a tour of your home. September is National Preparedness Month. Sponsored by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), National Preparedness Month seeks to educate Americans on preparing for natural disasters and other types of emergencies. But you’ll also need to prepare for unexpected events in many other areas of your life — particularly those events related to the financial security of you and your family. Here are some of the most important of these events, along with possible preparations for them: • Unanticipated early retirement – If you encounter a “downsizing” or other occurrence that results in the loss of a job, or even the end of a career, before you expected it, would you be able to avoid major disruptions to your lifestyle? To help prepare for such a loss of income, make sure to fully fund your IRA each year. The maximum contribution is $5,500 per year plus an additional $1,000 for those age 50 and older. • Disability – Even a short-term disability can seriously harm your finances — and a long-term disability could prove devastating. Your employer might offer some form of disability insurance, but it may not be sufficient. So you may need to explore private coverage. • Personal liability – If someone were ever injured on your property or due to some action of yours, you could face legal actions demanding hundreds of thousands of dollars. To help protect yourself, consider adding umbrella liability insurance. • Changing family situation – Changes in your life — marriage, divorce, remarriage, children, stepchildren — can drastically affect your estate plans and the type of legacy you want to leave. To prevent unpleasant surprises for your family, make sure you periodically review beneficiary designations on your investment accounts, such as your IRA and 401(k), and work with your tax and legal advisors to update your estate planning documents — will, living trust and so on — as needed. • Outliving your money – Once you reach retirement, your greatest concern may be that you’ll outlive your money. To help prevent this from happening, create a sustainable withdrawal strategy — that is, determine how much you can take out each year from your investment and retirement accounts, and stick to this amount. • Need for long-term care – You can’t predict whether you will ever need to enter a nursing home or require the assistance of a home health care worker, but one thing is for sure — these services are extremely expensive. Consider this: The national average for a private room in a nursing home is nearly $84,000 per year, according to a recent survey by Genworth, a financial security company. To help prepare for these costs, you may want to consult with a professional financial advisor, who can suggest appropriate solutions. • Untimely death – Your absence could jeopardize your family’s financial security, particularly if you passed away while your children were still at home. To help ensure that your family could remain in the home and that your children could go to college, if they choose, make sure you have adequate life insurance. Your passage through life will be filled with twists and turns, and you can’t always see what lies ahead. But you can ease your journey by preparing yourself for the unexpected. The organization announced their selection of Pastor Rex to widespread applause and appreciation for Reverend Sample’s leadership role in bringing community stewardship to the forefront during his tenure as Pastor at MPCC. “Since Rex Sample’s arrival in Munds Park in late 2009, his involvement in outreach from the local church has been nothing less than spectacular” said Regina Bailey, long term resident and community participant. “He has been involved in so many various activities throughout the community and has set such a welcoming and sincere manner that he has succeeded in bringing the community closer together Pictured L-R, Pastor Rex Sample, “Person of The Year” & Dick Drinen, PPOA President, than anytime I can remember, added Bailey.” “Organization of the Year.” The Munds Park Community Church has always been actively involved in the community since its inception in the early 1980’s, but enjoyed a strong resurgence and growth in membership after hiring Rex Sample as the pastor in 2009. Soon thereafter, the church allowed the Pinewood Farmers Market to borrow the parking lot on Saturdays to host the Farmers Market, which brought hundreds upon hundreds of people to the facility, many of them for the first time. Many people who visit Munds Park had never even ventured over to the west side of the Park but ended up doing so because of the inclusiveness of the church to host the Farmers Market. Naturally it brought new members to the church. Next was Rex Sample’s involvement within the community itself by joining and attending the Pinewood Fire Auxiliary, becoming a charter Board of Director for the Munds Park Business Alliance and participating in the Pinewood Players local productions. He joined the Pinewood Country Club and reached out to bring God’s Word to the entire community. His involvement is establishing an Emergency Shelter resulted in the church being a sanctuary for stranded 1-17 highway motorists. He worked tirelessly to assist the MPBA in the advancement of the BEAUTIFICATION Project, which is now in its fourth year. He served as a Member-At-Large director for the first three years of the organizations infancy. Anyone who has attended a Christmas In July Performance at the church can attest to the dramatic side of Pastor Rex as Michael the Arch Angel, where the crowd roared with laughter as he appeared in full costume and long haired wig. He has also played various roles in the community plays at the Pinewood Playhouse. His ability to brings various groups together for the betterment of Munds Park has been something the community can be very proud of, as can the entire congregation of Munds Park Community Church. The Pinewood Property Owners’ Association was also honored at the event and was named “Organization of the Year,” for its support and assistance of the BEAUTIFICATION Project. PPOA President Dick Drinen was on hand to accept the award on behalf of the non-profit group who has worked for many years to enhance the quality of life in Munds Park. The PPOA has joined with MPBA and the Pinewood Sanitary District to work with ADOT and the county to obtain legal access to the weed covered entrances to the Park in order to plant trees, bushes and lay rock and gravel to enhance the community entrance. After the sudden death of a dear friend, a feisty group of women from the town of Eden Falls, Georgia, decide that life is indeed short, and they vow to change their lives and achieve their dreams. Sugar Lee Thompkins decides to reach for her elusive star by converting an abandoned church into a day spa. The SPA-DEE-DAH is born, and the fun begins thanks to Sugar Lee’s dear friends Carlene, Nita, Mavis and Crystal. The comic tension mounts when Sugar Lee’s old high school boyfriend (Bobby Dwayne) shows up, and Sugar Lee’s life-long rival (Bunny) vows she’ll stop at nothing to steal the spa building, (which may house a surprising secret), away from Sugar Lee. “The Hallelujah Girls” is one of those silly, rollicking shows that audiences love. It reminds us of the importance of good friends, and of not taking life so seriously that we forget to laugh and love. It’s a joyful comedy that will make you laugh out loud and shout “Hallelujah”. “Be My Baby” will be under the direction of Bill Kane who directed the hugely successful “On Golden Pond” in 2013. This is the newest play by Ken Ludwig, who wrote “Lend Me A Tenor” which was performed in the Pinewood Playhouse in 2012. The play tells the story of John, an irascible older “country boy” and an uptight “city” woman, Maude, who take on the journey of a lifetime. They are brought together when his ward marries her niece. Then, when the young couple decides to adopt a newborn baby, the older couple has to travel thousands of miles to California to pick up the child and bring her safely home. The problem is that John and Maude despise each other. To make matters worse, they get stranded in San Francisco for several weeks and are expected to jointly care for the helpless newborn. There they form a new partnership and learn some startling lessons about life and love. “Whose Wives Are They Anyway” will be directed by Marsha Propps. Marsha is a long time veteran of Pinewood Players with many credits in her acting / directing career. Her most recent stage appearance was a brilliant portrayal of Ethel Thayer in “On Golden Pond” in the 2013 season. As the play begins, the cosmetics company has been sold and two of its Vice Presidents, David and John have planned a weekend off before the new CEO arrives on Monday. With their wives safely off to New York on a shopping spree they check into the Oakfield Golf and Country Club intending to "golf their brains out". The unexpected encounter with their new boss (who they were shocked to learn is a woman) turns their plans upside down. She insists on meeting their wives, stating blithely "No one who went golfing for a weekend without their wife would ever work for me". Now John and David have to produce wives and the hilarity begins! We are all looking forward to next season and to experiencing all these great plays. It is about a dentist who successfully avoids going to the altar with his various amours by telling them he is married with three children. This works fine until he goes with an unusual girl who wants to meet his wife and children and then she feels sorry for them I went to Cactus Flower expecting a frilly play like the movie with Goldie Hawn and Walter Matthau. Well, there were frills. Cheryl Parker played the part that Goldie Hawn had in the movie, and she did a superb job with her hot pink bedroom, her short shorts with unusual stockings, and her kinky personality. But, Cheryl also had her serious side with her concern for the other women that were being snubbed as their boyfriends and husbands were chasing women. While Cheryl had shown her dramatic abilities several times in plays like Dixie Swim Club, Bill Spain, who played Igor Sullivan, was new to our stage. What an addition! Bill has a very strong speaking voice, and it seemed as if he had been on stage often before instead of it being his first time. His acting was natural, and he did not seem strange to the stage even when wearing just a towel The comedic roles were handled by Phyllis Schurz as the wealthy Mrs. Durant, who thought that her hair appointment was more important than her dentist appointment;, Lee Henry, who was an aging lecherous romantic looking to score with any skirt: and Carlos Navarette, who as a Latin lover did not see anything wrong with leaving his wife alone at home while dating another woman. These three along with Sunnie Saperstein and Stan Debber filled out a fine cast. However, what really surprised and pleased me was the acting skill and dramatic abilities of the two main characters played by Bill Gibney as the dentist, Dr. Julian Winston, and his old maid nurse, Stephanie Dickinson, played by Melanie Westmark. Melanie and Bill gave two of the best performances I have seen on the Pinewood PINEWOOD NINERS GOLF ASSOCIATION By Carla Marks Labor Day has come and gone and we are only three weeks away from the official beginning of Fall. Time and Summer have flown by incredibly fast. We are down to only a couple of more weeks of Niners’ golf. Due to some Plays of the Day being cancelled due to rain or standing water on the golf course, I have no new winners to report on, at this time. I am still awaiting the results from August 27th which was the fourth Medallion Round, as well as the Dice Game. I will have those results in my next and final article for the season. I do have a correction. I made a big error in my last article in reporting the results of the President’s Cup. The correct results were: DIANE SCHNEIDER won with a Score of 29 * Pat Stewart 2nd Place Score of 31 Rosalind Ruch 3rd Place Score of 32 Kathy Vogt 4th Place Score of 32 (Score Card Playoff) Brenda Scott 5th Place Score of 33 (Score Card Playoff) My apologies, Pat, for the omission in the last article. The annual Club Championship will be held on Monday, September 8th (front nine) and Wednesday, September 10th, (back nine). Following the golf on Wednesday, the 10th, will be the final General Meeting and Luncheon of the season. The Election of Officers for the next season will take place at the 33 stage or for that matter on any stage. They really got into it in their scenes together. Facial and body expressions along with their strong verbal skills just glued my attention to the stage like few other performances have. To me, this was a breakout for both actors. They had both been in several plays here but they have usually played lighter roles. Their roles in this production were strong. They both had to go from the kind and gentle to the strong and forceful. Each had a variety of moods to go through, and each did not leave anything on the table. Melanie’s scene with Cheryl Parker in the record shop was a classic which produced strong emotions as she was trying to help her boss out with his lies but also could not hurt the feelings of his mistress. Then her final scene with Bill Gibney reminded me of the clash between Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton in the movie Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wolff? There was a real buildup of tension in that scene and then at last came the final resolution as they realized they were meant for each other. Bill Gibney throughout the play had to change from the funloving and inconsiderate man to the man who did not want to hurt other’s feelings, Again, his last scene with Melanie showcased his fine acting ability. If there was a fault with this play, it was the length and the number of scene changes. Three hours and fifteen minutes and fourteen scene changes keeps you sitting for a long time. The director, Don Miller, recognized this and suggested that we enjoy the ballet of the stage crew as they moved things around in the nearly dark stage. While this must have bothered some. Others followed the director’s suggestion before the play started that we enjoy the ballet of the stage crew and their changes. In fact, there was often applause for the crew and at the end of some of the performances the crew got a standing ovation. There were at least ten on the crew that I counted and probably more Don Miller took on a horrendous task for his directing of the Pinewood Players, but I, for one, was happy I got a chance to see such a well-done job. Kudos Mr. Miller! meeting. The nominees are: BRENDA SCOTT BECKY PALUMBO PRESIDENT VICE PRESIDENT LORI PRESCOTT TREASURER GERI BORG SECRETARY Please be sure to sign up for both golf and the luncheon in the Pro Shop. You will also be able to register to join the Niners for the 2015 season. Bring your checkbook!! Fun Day, the planned night golf that was scheduled for August 21st, also had to be rescheduled, due to the very wet conditions of the golf course. It has been rescheduled for September 11th. For further information, please contact Betty Clow. Linda Swindell, who so very successfully chaired our Invitational, along with Donna Slocum, back in July, has advised me that, from the proceeds that came from our Raffle, $500 has been donated to our wonderful Pinewood Fire Department. I think we all know how fortunate we are to have this terrific group right here in our community. We are all so much safer because of them. We do hope they all know how much we appreciate them. 34 September 8, 2014 Pinewood News COMMUNITY EMERGENCY ALERT SIREN SUPPORT OUR ADVERTISERS, THEY SUPPORT THIS PAPER Let them know you saw their ad in The Pinewood News! PLEASE DONATE! Word Search Solution Pinewood News Take Care of your Trees by Mike & Roslyn Merristem Tree Service Advice From Your Local Arborist: Why Does My Apple Tree Have No Apples? Fun fact: Johnny Appleseed's real name was John Chapman, who supposedly distributed apple trees to the western frontier.Though, since his apple trees were not grafted, the apples were very sour and were used for hard apple cider and apple jack (concentrated apple cider via freezing and draining the alcohol from the slushy)! So, this must be why he was welcome in every cabin he came to. I see a lot of apple trees in Munds Park, some grow apples, some do not. The question of why has been asked many times and the three most common reasons are below. First, so many of us look at a plant and decide it is not doing well and we go straight to the fertilizer isle. The content of the fertilizer used is critical. Depending on content, some fertilizers will actually stop the tree from fruiting! The reason for this is nitrogen, a friend to all plants but the enemy of producing apples. Nitrogen encourages the tree to grow new leaves which makes it grow more limbs. With all of its concentration on new limbs, it will not produce apples. Reading the label of fertilizers. Instead of getting a 10-10-10 or 5-5-5 get a 0-0-10, the first number on that list is nitrogen, the second is phosphorous and the third is potassium. Nitrogen and phosphorous encourages woody growth while potassium grows flowers. Without flowers, there will be no fruit. If your tree is in a lawn, do not use grass fertilizer within 5 feet of the branch tips since the tree doesn't know that that fertilizer was meant for the grass. The second main cause of no apples on your trees is pruning techniques. Your tree must be shaped properly, have just the right amount of limbs, and be controlled to do this with the right pruning technique. This is something that entire books are written about so all I can say here is, call Meristem Tree Care and let us do it. What I will explain is that improper pruning is the cause of something we call adventitious buds, or "suckers". With these suckers, the tree is again going to concentrate mainly on woody growth and not flowers and fruits. The third reason is pollination, no bees means no fruit. If you can spot two or three bees on your tree when it has flowers then it should pollinate and produce apples. Though, in some cases, this is only true when the bees are transferring pollen from a different apple tree. With wild apple trees, they have male and female flowers but wild apples are sour and not sweet (crab apples). Nursery apple trees are grafted with apple tree branches that have been grown for their sweetness for hundreds of years. But some grafted trees are not grafted with a male and female or maybe one or the other has not made it. This means that the tree will need a "mother" or "father" tree. A wild apple tree is the perfect pollinating tree since it has both male and female flowers and will not make your apples sour. Happy harvesting and good luck! September 8, 2014 Pinewood News 37 Birds of Munds Park #58 Hummingbirds by Margaret Dyekman A neighbor of mine stopped by and asked about a hummingbird she had been seeing: small and “orange”. We agreed it was a Rufous Hummingbird – an absolutely beautiful bird that has an apt name. The word “rufous” was first found in literature as the name of a color in the year 1782 and was described as rust, or reddish brown, or brownish red. This little hummingbird favors conifer forests, riparian shrubs, and high mountain meadows, and it breeds all the way from Alaska, British Columbia, the Northwest states, and down through the northern areas of California. The Rufous Hummingbirds we are seeing here in Munds Park are in the midst of migration. They often make long stopovers as they fly from the northern part of the continent, across the Rocky Mountains, and then to Mexico, Central America, and even to Florida. So imagine this: the ones we are seeing came recently from places like Vancouver or Boise or the forests around Seattle. They may end up around New Orleans or Jacksonville and then after three to four months, start their long journey north to breed. That is a pretty amazing trip for something that only weighs three grams and is about four inches long. Back in 2010 I compiled some interesting facts about hummingbirds, and I think they are worth repeating: •They beat their wings 18-20 times per second. •They are the only birds that can fly backwards. •They are partial to flower nectar that is at least 15% sugar. •For protein they eat small insects and spiders, especially when feeding their young. •They spend about 20% of their time eating and 80% resting and digesting. •Their heart rate can be as high as 1,280 beats per minute (yes, per minute, not hour). •Less than 25 species of hummingbirds have been recorded in the U.S. •Chile has recorded 162 different species of hummingbirds! How can you attract hummingbirds? First, but perhaps not your first choice depending on how much of a gardener you are, is that you can plant hummingbirdfriendly plants. Here in Munds Park that would include tubular plants that will be hardy in USDA zones 6a and 6b, and in the desert areas such as Phoenix, in zone 9. Your local garden center can help you select hummingbird friendly plants that you can place in the ground or in containers. A 501C3 tax exempt organization AND donations are tax deductible. Members and non-members have been generous to the PFD Auxiliary throughout the year and it is truly appreciated. If our organization could function without asking for your help, it would be great, but unfortunately we are one of those organizations that will always be in need of donations. Just to let you know how important your donations are to the Pinewood Fire Department, here are just a few items that we were able to purchase because of your support. An icemaker, dishwasher, refrigerators, bed mattresses, emergency rope rappelling equipment, all weather safety jackets, a CPR video, automated external defibrillator (AED), two saws, an inverter, fire hosing and a new hydraulic power pump also known as the Jaws of Life! A second way is to hang a hummingbird feeder. A very important piece of information about feeders: use one part white sugar to four parts water and do not put red food coloring in the mixture. Artificial coloring is not necessary – birds will find your bright red feeder. That’s why the feeder is red, not blue, green, white, or any other color. So skip the food coloring. In hot weather, change the sugar water every two to three days, especially if the feeder gets a lot of sun exposure. You can reach me at [email protected], and you can read all the archived Birds of Munds Park articles and leave your comments at www.birdladyblog.wordpress.com. I welcome your questions, reports of sightings, and your ideas for future articles. Ilse Kitchen stopped by my office to share with me the small creature she came upon on the sidewalk at the Pinewood Country Club. She did some research on the computer and found out that the mysterious bug was a Western Hercules Beetle. It is not native to this area so it makes you wonder how he ended up here! In the first picture, he is missing a leg. It is a he because Ilse found out that the female species does not have a horn. It feeds on the sap of Ash trees and in the morning he is black in color. What an interesting find...Thank you Ilse for sharing! Canned, dry package items and bottled items are needed. I DIDN'T KNOW THAT “God helps those who help themselves” is a good quote but it's not from the Bible. Ben Franklin penned it in his Poor Richards almanac. Almost everyone has heard the expression “the seven deadly sins.” But what are they? Here's the big seven: Pride, Greed, Lust, Envy, Gluttony, Anger and Sloth. Wow! I for one am glad that God forgives. Science has discovered that stars emit radio waves which are received on Earth as high pitched by Mac Jett sounds—God mentioned this in Job 38:7: “When the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy.” At a time when most of the world believed that the Earth sat on a large animal or a giant (1500 B.C.) the Bible spoke of the Earth floating in space: “He spreads out the northern skies over empty space; He suspends the Earth over nothing.” Job 26:7. While open to serious discussion, the consensus among Biblical scholars is that the Book of Job was written around 1500 B.C. Personal note: In researching this 'I didn't know that' section I spent some time in Job. It is a fascinating book that I had not read very carefully...now, I'm going to re-read this book very carefully. WHO ARE WE? We are a non-denominational church, which simply means that regardless of your denominational background (or lack of same) you are welcome to attend and worship with us Sunday mornings at 10:30am. Adult and children's Sunday school begins at 9am Sunday mornings. HOSPITAL VISITATION If you or someone you know is in, or is going to be in, the hospital, and if they would appreciate a visit from Pastor Rex please call the church (928) 286-2022) to let us know. service for everyone Please leave a message if your call to the church is not answered personally. ONGOING AT MPCC On the first Sunday of each month the church offers Communion to all who are present. This is an open Communion, which means you do not have to be a member of the church to participate. The second Sunday of each month is potluck Sunday. Everyone is invited whether you bring food or not. This is a great time to meet people in a casual environment, make new friends and enjoy good food. The potluck follows the 10:30am Sunday service. PASTOR REX SAMPLE Rex Sample is the pastor at MPCC and is, in his own words, a 24/7 pastor. He can be reached at the church (928) 286-2022 or at his personal phone number (928) 310-6402. YOU ARE CORDIALLY INVITED If you don’t have a church home here in Northern Arizona, we hope you’ll consider joining us. We would love to see you at any, or all, of our weekly activities. Sedona, Ariz. – Labor Day weekend brought many visitors to Coconino National Forest, increasing the number of abandoned campfires typically seen on holiday weekends as compared to last year. In the course of making contacts throughout the weekend, fire prevention staff counted at least 35 abandoned campfires over Labor Day weekend (Friday, Aug. 29 through Monday, Sep. 1). Compared to the same Friday-through-Monday timeframe, fire prevention staff reported only eight abandoned campfires in 2013 and 17 in 2012. “Even though none of the 35 abandoned campfires resulted in a large wildfire, it just takes one spark in the right conditions to set in course something that can destroy lives, the forest, and property,” said Don Muise, fire staff officer for the Coconino National Forest. “We need to always be vigilant anytime we decide to have a campfire, and make sure we have enough water to extinguish campfires we’ve created. Bottom line—a campfire needs to be out cold-to-touch before leaving the area.” Forest visitors are urged to practice the following campfire safety guidelines: •Clear all flammable material away from the fire for a minimum of five feet in all directions. •Have a responsible person in attendance at all times. •Never leave your campfire unattended. •Avoid making a campfire during the windy part of the day. •Make a fire only if you have a shovel and sufficient water to put it out. A rule of thumb is to bring at least 6 gallons of water to extinguish a typical campfire. •To make sure your campfire is out, drown with water and stir with dirt, making sure all burned materials are extinguished. Feel with your hand to make sure it’s out cold. Marketed by Provident Partners Realty Designated Broker, William J.
