is the color and symbol of powerful, energizing
action and it is the starting point for those who
come to Habitat in search of stability and empowerment. When a family enters the Habitat homeownership training program, they receive a red
T-shirt signifying the beginning of their homeownership journey. Immersed in the educational
program, participants attend classes on such topics as
budgeting and home maintenance and they also work on
the build site as part of their life-changing journey. Current Habitat homeowners talk about the relief of not having to move multiple times each year in search of more
affordable housing and describe how stabilizing it is for
their children to attend one school consistently instead of
several each year. The stability that a Habitat home provides these families stretches into every second of every
day of their lives and the lives of their children.
stability and life-altering opportunity, but it cannot happen without your help. Most Habitat applicants are rent
burdened or don’t qualify for a traditional mortgage, putting homeownership beyond their reach without a hand
up. Your investment into the lives of these adults and children offers our community a vitality of spirit and awakening potential that catches on like wildfire, building lives
and securing futures that would be very different without
Habitat.
As they cross the threshold of their new home, Habitat
homeowners cut a red ribbon, symbolizing their new lives
and the opportunity to give their hopes and dreams a place
to take root and grow. As you can see from the following
pages, it is a celebration full of dignity, empowerment,
and community goodwill. It is a moment not to be missed.
We are grateful for your support.

avid Battles looked around his father-in-law’s
three-bedroom house and thought, “We just need
a place to breathe.” David’s family of seven had
moved in to help care for wife Michele’s ailing father and space was more than tight. “A dream, just
a dream and a blessing,” Michele said, explaining
their application for a Habitat home and the response from her employer and their home’s sponsor,
Saint Thomas Health. Michele has worked at Saint
Thomas Health for more than 17 years, and David
has been with UPS since 2007, companies that are
both longtime Habitat partners. The Battles applied for a traditional mortgage but couldn’t get
approved for the size home they needed because
of the amount of interest on the monthly mortgage
payment. Living with Michele’s father was not a
long-term solution, either. When Saint Thomas
learned that the Battles had applied to Habitat, everyone knew an answer was close at hand.
Sponsored by:
The outpouring of support for Michele and her
“family
and the rush of people who signed up to
work on the weekends warmed my heart.”
— Carrie Teaford, associate chief operations
officer, Saint Thomas Hospital
Looking around the Habitat build site, Michele
stopped more than once to gaze at her co-workers
with love and amazement at their devotion to help
her family build a home. On May 3, the day she
cut the ribbon, with her husband and children by
her side and so many from her employer around
her, she looked up at the fully finished house that
was waiting to become their home, and a triumphant smile spread over her as tears of gratitude spilled from her eyes. “I would have never
thought 17 years ago when I started to work
for Saint Thomas that my co-workers, supervisors
and doctors would be here helping me build my
house. They say nothing is impossible… it’s not.”

One corporate solution
ENRICHING LIVES
Nissan built their ninth Habitat home in Davidson County with Bhim & Chandra Subedi
so valuable for people to know the stability and sense of community that having a per“It’s
manent home provides. That’s why, on a very personal level, our employees are glad to give
their time and effort to help. On a corporate level, our partnership with Habitat is a tangible
example of how Nissan carries out its mission to enrich peoples’ lives. Habitat makes a real
and lasting difference in the lives of others, and we are glad to be a part of it.”
— Nissan executive Dan Bedore, on the board of Habitat of Greater Nashville
I
n 2007 after Nissan moved its North American headquarters from Los Angeles to Nashville, the
company sponsored its first Habitat for Humanity home
in Davidson County: a three-bedroom, two-bath home
for a mother and her three daughters. The homeowner was so excited, she told everyone she was
moving as soon as she was approved to be a partner family – seven months before her move-in date!
The passion that is part of the Habitat experience is
not limited to the homeowner families. Nissan has been
a committed partner since its relationship with Habitat
began in 2005. The catalyst for the partnership was
a catastrophe. After hurricanes Katrina and Rita devastated the Gulf Coast in 2005, Nissan donated 50
Nissan Titan trucks filled with construction supplies, and
mobilized employees to take the goods to Louisiana
to assist Habitat’s response efforts in home building.
One of Nissan’s philanthropy focus areas is humanitarian relief. Habitat’s mission to help families obtain safe, affordable housing aligns well
with Nissan’s community-strengthening priorities.
Over the past 10 years, Nissan’s nationwide support for Habitat for Humanity has amounted to cash
donations of $12.6 million. Nissan employees have
served 570 U.S. families, helped to build 71 homes
and logged more than 70,000 volunteer hours. The
company has donated 138 vehicles to Habitat affiliates. Nissan has supported Habitat’s Jimmy & Rosalyn
Carter Work Project in Thailand, Haiti and U.S. cities. This year Nissan will donate five Mobile Response
Units – specially equipped Nissan NV commercial vehicles – that will expand Habitat’s ability to support
rebuilding efforts after a disaster. Nissan employees

serve as Habitat board members, not only in Nashville, but
in other states where Nissan has an operational presence.
Locally, they have built nine Habitat homes, donated a Titan truck in 2007 and donated a construction van in 2014.

‘Living in my apartment is
like being shackled.’
— Koang Chol
rentwood Hills Church of Christ
(BHCC) embraces its mission to spread
love and the gospel with more than 750
beating hearts and 1,500 hands in motion.
This giving organization has been a powerhouse of love and goodwill since 2008
toward hardworking, low-income Habitat
homeowners like husband and wife Koang Chol and Nyabel Bilieu. Both came to
the U.S. to escape their war-torn country
of South Sudan. Koang has been involved
with the Nashville International Center for
Empowerment (NICE) since its founding in
2005, and has worked there as an employment specialist since 2011. Nyabel
takes care of their three children. They
were drawn to Habitat because of the educational component of the homeownership
program and the zero percent interest rate
mortgage loan.
“I think any time you are involved in a
project like this, your congregation gets as
much out of the experience as the family. It is impossible to know all the benefits
or to put a price tag on the experience,
but I would dare say that the impact will
change people forever. Attitudes change
and giving hearts are formed,” said Jonathan Seamon, executive minister, BHCC. “I
enjoy watching the smiles and the excitement our congregation has for the homeowners. Pictures can’t always show the real
emotions that a family experiences as they
watch their house go up in front of their
eyes. For them to talk to people who are
giving and helping to build their home is
such a different experience from watching
a contractor build a house. There is a lot of
love shared!” said Seamon.
“Living in my apartment is like being
shackled,” Koang adds. Thanks to BHCC,
Koang’s shackles have been replaced with
a door to walk through and a place for him
to proudly say, “I am home.”

abitat volunteers generate more than the equivalent of $800,000
annually in community building, positive social impact, goodwill,
and teamwork, made evident by the wattage of all those electric
smiles at the build site! This means that more low-income families
have an opportunity to bring stability to their lives and build equity
wealth through a roof over their heads. There is no place on earth
like the Habitat build site, where Habitat partner families, company CEOs, and dedicated volunteers work side-by-side, making
our community a better place to live for all of us.
Plus, it’s a whole lot of fun at a Habitat build site!
Habitat would like to recognize all the supervisors on site
(S.O.S) who donate their time and expertise on the build
site to provide guidance and care for our families, sponsors
and volunteers.

Hillary Fox | 2015
“ Nashville is a better, more vibrant city as a result of The Memorial Foundation,”
said Danny Herron, president and CEO of Habitat of Greater Nashville. “Through
their generosity, Habitat has been able to make the dream of homeownership a
reality for many, many deserving families, and for that we are so very grateful.
J. D. Elliott was an inspiration to everyone in our city’s nonprofit community, and he
will be greatly missed.”
MDHA and Habitat for Humanity of Greater Nashville
are long-standing partners. MDHA made federal funds
available to The Housing Fund for revitalization efforts
in areas of Metro Nashville that were
impacted by the historic May 2010
floods, funding deployed by Habitat to renovate homes for purchase
by Habitat partner families. Once
complete, almost 30 deserving
families will become homeowners
through support of this program.
Separately, in an effort to address
the continuing need for quality affordable housing in north
Nashville, MDHA undertook the
acquisition, design, and development of The Woods at Monticello, a 36-lot subdivision of
single-family homes just north
of Trinity Lane and west of I-65,
being built in phases. In the fall
of 2014, Habitat for Humanity
of Greater Nashville requested
and was awarded six lots from
MDHA as part of Phase Three. In
October 2015, Habitat dedicated
homes for six deserving families
who worked hard to complete
the homeownership training program, including classroom work
and build site hours. Habitat is
grateful to MDHA for making
these lots available at no cost
to the agency, as well as for the
down-payment assistance provided to help make the houses affordable for low-income families.
He was the heart of our mission, from the day we were founded, to give our
best in terms of resources, support and encouragement to nonprofits operating
throughout our region. We will miss his warmth and wisdom every day...
S
ince inception, The Memorial Foundation has served 778 organizations
with grants totaling $135 million.
The driving force behind this benevolent charity with its widespread
and lasting community impact was
J.D. Elliott, who passed away July
22, 2015. When Nashville Memorial
Hospital in Madison sold to HCA in
April 1994, an endowment fund was
generated from the sale of the hospital’s assets. Elliott, who had served
as CEO of the hospital from 1968 to
1994, became the founding president of The Memorial Foundation.
Of Elliott’s passing, The Memorial
Foundation Board Chair Frank Grace
Jr. said, “He was the heart of our mission, from the day we were founded, to give our best in terms of resources, support and encouragement
to nonprofits operating throughout
our region. We will miss his warmth
and wisdom every day, but will
move forward into the future with his
sterling legacy to guide our way.”
The Memorial Foundation’s partnership with Habitat for Humanity of
Greater Nashville began in 2003,
and has continued over the years with
substantial funding for land development and home sponsorships. During
Elliott’s tenure, The Memorial Foundation provided funding to Habitat for
the Timberwood, Park Preserve and
Hallmark communities. The Foundation
has also helped to sponsor homes for
11 Habitat families in Wilson County.

How It Works
Families in HomeWORKS, Habitat’s homeownership training program, complete 70
required hours of education prior to purchasing their homes. Financial education classes
focus on budgeting, getting out of debt,
saving, investing and retirement planning.
Additional sessions focus on legal aspects of
homeownership, neighborly conflict resolution, and home security, maintenance, and
energy efficiency.
Families in the Habitat program also spend
time working at the Habitat Restore and helping to build their homes and the homes of their
neighbors. Equipped for success, families purchase their homes through a mortgage loan
provided by Habitat at zero percent interest.
Monthly mortgage payments (principal, insurance, property taxes, and homeowners association fees, if applicable) average $550$650 monthly; homeowners also pay up to
$2,500 in closing costs to purchase their home.

ReStore Business Partners
Habitat of Greater Nashville operates four ReStores, two in Davidson County, one in
Wilson County and one in Dickson County. Net proceeds from ReStore sales provide
nearly $250,000 annually toward operating expenses and funding for Habitat home
sponsorships. Proceeds from the ReStores have helped build homes for more than 25
low-income families!
H
This year, ReStores experienced changes including technology upgrades, increased
visibility on social media, and an ongoing volunteer recruitment program. If you aren’t
a faithful follower of the ReStore Facebook page, you are missing out! The number
of informed shoppers has grown from 400 to nearly 2,000; log in to find all the new

abitat’s Women Build is a unique partnership of female community leaders, along with companies focused on women as
executives and mentors, coming together to sponsor, build, and dedicate homes for female homeowners. Women Build is focused on the
power of networking to help women achieve their goals, including making homeownership a reality for Habitat partner families each
year. Habitat of Greater Nashville’s Women Build initiative has sponsored homes for seven women since 2011.

Supporting the ReStores is another great way to contribute to Habitat’s mission to help
low-income families lift up their lives through the benefits of homeownership.
ReStore volunteers have contributed more than 4,000 volunteer hours to the ReStore
this past year, helping to keep overhead costs low. Local colleges and universities have
been instrumental in lending a helping hand. If you have a few hours to spare, contact

Jamie Jacobs: Growing up in New Jersey, moving from apartment to apartment and living in motels with her mother and siblings, had a profound effect
on how Jaime feels about the meaning

than just a place to live, it also means everything: stability, security and hope for
a brighter future. Sponsor: Faith Build

abitat was fortunate when Pat Hughes
joined the Women Build team. Pat quickly stepped into the role of coordinating
build volunteers. Spreadsheets, clarity
and communication were her tools as
she helped to coordinate nearly 30 volunteer groups and countless individuals
over the course of the build. Pat was
on site every morning of the build and
throughout many of the days. Whether
it was the countless hours spent making sure that every woman who was
interested in swinging a hammer as
a part of Women Build was accommodated, or the care she showed for
the partner families, Pat was instrumental to the success of Women Build.
