Welcome Page
Welcome
We’re sure you will agree that pets
are super! Tutti and Tigger really liked the
modeling session with their capes. We’ve
had another great year here at Greater
Cincinnati Pet Pages. We continue to learn
about new pet businesses and events and
enjoy sharing them with you.
Pet Pages began in Florida with the mission
“To bring about the betterment of the animal
community through education and awareness.” One of the ways that we in the Cincinnati and Dayton areas want to accomplish
that is to encourage everyone to consider
the “adoption option” when increasing their
pet families. There are many wonderful
shelters and rescue organizations listed in
this magazine with loving animals looking for
a “forever home.” All of the humane societies,
shelters, and rescues are listed in the front,
under adoption, so it is easy to find your new
best friend.
We continue to learn about programs to
help pets and their families that are looking
for people who share their mission. (See
Volunteer Opportunities.) We also consider
it important to provide information about
healthier choices for your pet. We encourage
you to consider natural alternatives to lawn
care, health care, and pet food.

Lessons From Tigger
1. Don’t be the one to sit in the most
comfortable chair in the room, sit on the
person sitting in the most comfortable
chair in the room.
2. Bark until you are noticed.
3. Dig until you find what you are
looking for.
4. Love unconditionally.
5. Dance when you’re happy.
6. Always clean the dishes before they
go into the dishwasher.
7. Never let bad hair ruin your day.
8. Strangers are friends that you are
about to meet.
9. Be the first to get up in the morning
so you can greet others.
10. The very young and the very old are
often the most interesting because they
tend to have more food on and around
them.
Veterinary Acupuncture
By Kate Smith, D.V.M.
Needles. Yuck. Many of us dread getting
injections, and we worry about our pets
getting hurt by them, too. So the idea of
deliberately putting multiple needles into
our pets may seem a bit scary.
Acupuncture is the technique of placing
small, thin needles into specific locations on
the body to effect a specific response. Most
pets tolerate the acupuncture treatments
well, and many even enjoy it. The placement
of these needles elicits a change in hormones
in the body and the brain that can bring pain
relief and relaxation. We use acupuncture
in veterinary medicine for a variety of reasons - pain relief, neurologic issues, to help
stimulate appetite to name a few.
Acupuncture has its roots in ancient
eastern medicine techniques, but has been
refined to modern day standards. There
is an increasing body of evidence of the
actual physical changes that happen when
the needles are placed at the traditional
sites - these sites are frequently located near
nerves or vessels. The needles stimulate
these nerve or vessel bundles to effect the
changes we want to see. Needles may also
be placed directly into muscles that are tense
and painful, allowing a better flow of blood
and oxygen into the area, which allows the
muscle fibers to relax and decreases pain.
Acupuncture, massage, and other alternative therapies are great tools to have in our
arsenal of veterinary medicine. They work
best when combined with a proper diagnosis
and when taking into consideration the pet’s
health and lifestyle. This is holistic medicine
at its basis - consider the whole patient and
create a plan to maintain balance and health.
Dr. Smith is a veterinarian. She owns
and operates Pet Alternative Therapy At
Home (PATH.)

The Rescuer's Creed
I promise I will take your unwanted
animals.
I will heal their wounds, their diseases, their broken bones.
I will give them the medical attention they need and deserve.
I will feed them and give them a
warm place to sleep.
I will spay and neuter them, vaccinate them against the diseases
that can harm them.
I will treat them and honor them.
I will buy them toys, blankets, balls,
and teach them to play.
I will speak softly to them.
I will try to teach them not to fear,
not to cry, and not to hate.
I will whisper sweet, kind, gentle
words into their ears,
while gently trying to stroke their
fear, their pain, and their scars
away.
I will face their emotional scars and
give them time to overcome them.
I will socialize them, potty train
them, teach them to be obedient,
show them dignity,
and hold their paws, and stroke
their ears if they have endured
too much,
and walk them over the Rainbow
Bridge,
BUT most of all I will teach them
LOVE.

Adopt a Dog
If you want someone who will bring
you the paper without first tearing it
apart to remove the sports section ...
Then adopt a dog.
If you want someone willing to
make a fool of himself simply over the
joy of seeing you ...Then adopt a dog.
If you want someone who will eat
whatever you put in front of him and
never say it’s not quite as good as his
mother made it ...Then adopt a dog.
If you want someone always willing
to go out, at any hour, for as long and
wherever you want ...Then adopt a
dog ...
If you want someone who will never
touch the remote, doesn’t care about
football, and can sit next to you as
you watch romantic movies ...Then
adopt a dog.
If you want someone who is content
to get up on your bed just to warm
your feet and whom you can push
off if he snores ...Then adopt a dog.
If you want someone who never
criticizes what you do, doesn’t care if
you are pretty or not, fat or thin, young
or old, and who acts as if every word
you say is especially worthy of listening to; who loves you unconditionally,
perpetually ...Then adopt a dog.
If, on the other hand, you want
someone who will never come when
you call, ignores you totally when you
come home, leaves hair all over the
place, walks all over you, runs around
all night and only comes around to
eat and sleep, and acts as if your
entire existence is solely to ensure
his happiness ...
Then adopt a cat!

I Am A “Forever” Pet, Not An “Until” Pet
I'm not an "until you get bored with me" pet.
I'm not an "until you find a girlfriend" pet.
I'm not an "until you have a baby" pet.
I'm not an "until you have to move" pet.
I'm not an "until you have no time" pet.
I'm not an "until I get old" pet.
I'm a Forever Pet.
If you can't give me forever,
then I'm not your pet.
It’s really that simple.

Warm Water Swimming for Canines
By Sandy Hodges
Warm water swimming has been a beneficial fitness choice for humans suffering
from disabilities and pain due to injury and
arthritis for some time. I am pleased that
this form of exercise is becoming a mainstream option for our canine companions.
Swimming is an ideal form of exercise
for chronic conditions, pre-operative
conditioning, post-operative recovery,
obesity, athletic conditioning and general
fitness in dogs. For dogs who have difficulty weight bearing due to illness, injury
or obesity, swimming is an excellent way
for them to use their muscles without putting stress on damaged or weak muscles or
painful joints. The warm water promotes
circulation to an injured area while at the
same time increasing muscle and joint
flexibility. Swimming also provides an
excellent cardiovascular workout. Water
creates resistance which limits the rate at
which a dog’s limbs can move through the
water. Due to this resistance a five-minute
workout may be equivalent to running five
miles on land. In addition to providing
numerous physical benefits, swimming
can also provide emotional benefits. I have
worked with many shelter dogs who have
gained confidence and trust after embarking on a swim program.
When dogs lose their ability to walk due
to illness or injury, the weightlessness of
swimming can give them the freedom to
move freely and restore their confidence.
Watching a disabled dog swim with exhilaration after a toy is a beautiful thing.
It is very important to check with your
veterinarian before beginning a swim
program for your dog.

Animal Communication Techniques
In the first edition of Greater Cincinnati
Pet Pages we discussed the techniques I
find most useful when I am communicating with animals. Since then I have learned
there are a lot of pet owners sending and
receiving messages from /to their pets.
Over the past few years I have had the
good fortune to work with many of them
and with other animal communicators in
the Greater Cincinnati area and in other
parts of the country.
One thing has become very clear to
me. Not all communicators work the
same way even though the results are
amazingly similar. There is no single way
to exchange information with animals.
Whichever method works for you is the
one you should use. You may actually be
getting bits and pieces of information in
several different ways.
When I touch an animal I “see” little
flashes of the animals thoughts in my
mind. All thoughts come to me very quickly. These picture flashes are only seen for a
few seconds. I try to interpret the thought
pictures that I see from an animal into my
words. I do not hear words from the animals. I only see things from the animal’s
point of view. That may not be the owner’s
point of view. For instance an animal
might show me that a person poked him/
her with something sharp. It hurt. What the
animal does not understand is that it was
a Veterinarian giving a necessary medical
injection. The animal only understands it
was an unpleasant experience.
My friend Gail, from Indiana, sees pictures in vivid color. She is a very gifted
communicator I am always amazed at
the descriptions she is able to give while
working with animals. She will talk about
a green toy or a yellow blanket. I see
things in black, white and shades of gray.
Katie, a young woman that I have
worked with from Columbus, Ohio, talks
about what the animal feels and thinks
when she communicates. When she works
with an animal she does not “see” pictures
at all. Instead she tunes in on the emotions,
feelings and thoughts.
Tiffany, a communicator from Texas,
has recently started working with animals
other than her own. She feels physical pain
so intensely that she will often leave a
session in great personal discomfort. That
is not unusual. I have also had it happen
to me. After a person has a little more
experience it becomes easier to recognize the pain the animal is experiencing,
describe it to the animals owner and then
let it go from your own (the communicator’s) body.
I have been told that the way a person
thinks when pondering a matter has a lot to
do with the kind of animal communication
style that will be easiest for them. I tend
to just stare into space-not focusing on
anything at all when I am working.
When concentrating on a subject, if
the person looks upward they tend to be
a visual/sight person. If a person looks
straight ahead while thinking they tend
to have a more verbal/auditory communication style. They will talk about what
kind of sounds animals hear around them.
When people ponder a matter and look in
a downward direction they tend to communicate about feelings/emotions.
My point is “there is no single way”
to communicate with animals. Whatever
method works for you is the one you
should practice. Trust your intuition regardless of how you are receiving it. No
two people work exactly alike. Try communicating with your animals. It is easy
and fun. It is also a good experience for
you and your pet. You just may learn some
things your didn’t know before.

animal communicator living in Cincinnati.

Your First Visit To A Dog Park
During your first visit to a dog park, try to
arrive at a time when there are not many
dogs in attendance. Walk your dog around
the park on the outside of the fence. Let
the dogs that are inside come over to the
fence to sniff and greet. If your dog sniffs
back and appears friendly, it may be ready
to join in the activities inside. If your dog
barks and lunges violently at those inside
the fence, he is not ready to enter the park.
When you enter the first gate, remove
the leash. The other dogs who are already
inside the park will come running to see
who is arriving. This is the Greeting Committee. Your dog may be eager to enter
or hesitant to get into a pack of unknown
dogs.
It takes about ten minutes for a new dog
to become accustomed to the dog park.
Initially, your dog may have his tail held in
a defensive posture, curved down between
his hind legs. He may lie down or try to get
into a corner as the dogs hover around
and sniff him. Pet your dog and give him
comforting words. Your dog may run away
from and be followed or playfully chased by
the Greeting Committee. Stay close by in
case your dog wants to come over to you
for protection. Once your dog realizes that
there are no threats inside the park, you
should see your dog’s tail rise to the “I am
having a good time” position.
Be sure to introduce yourself to the other
humans in the park. Ask for any helpful
hints. Keep an eye on your dog so you
can adhere to the number one rule of the
Dog Park: Scoop Your Poop!
Just as with any park, there are rules.
Most dog parks are not supervised; and
dog park attendees should not hesitate to
use their cell phones to call the authorities
if they feel their or their dog’s safety or
health are in danger. Each person is responsible for the actions of his or her dog.
Make your first visit a short one, perhaps
only thirty minutes. Leave on a positive
note. Leave at a time when your dog is
having fun, is not too tired, and really
doesn’t want to go.

website.

Vaccination: Benefit or Hazard?
By M. Lucinda Craig
Vaccination in both human medicine
and veterinary medicine has eliminated or
controlled many dangerous diseases, but,
as in everything, vaccination is not entirely
risk free. Your pet can have a reaction to a
vaccine. Vaccination can have unpredictable
effects on the immune system. While these
risks are real, they are rare, and the results
of a widespread disease outbreak would be
devastating.
For your pets, there are several essential
vaccinations which prevent contagious and
deadly diseases. Before widespread vaccination, distemper virus killed many dogs. Fifty
percent of infected dogs die from the disease,
and there is no known treatment. Age is not
protective; older unvaccinated dogs are as
likely to get distemper as puppies. Canine
parvovirus is a highly infection gastrointestinal
virus. Puppies are more susceptible than
adult dogs. Vaccination is very effective in
preventing this disease and should be started
as young as six to eight weeks.
Feline panleukopenia is the feline version
of parvovirus. It is often called feline distemper, but it is not related to canine distemper.
This is a highly infectious disease that is
usually fatal in kittens. Vaccination prevents
this disease, and all young cats should be
vaccinated.
Rabies is a disease that affects most
mammals, including humans. In this country
it is rare in our domestic animal species and
very rare in humans, but common in wildlife.
Worldwide rabies kills 55,000 people annually and 15 million people receive post
exposure vaccination. Vaccinating your pet
protects your family and all Americans from
this deadly disease.

Holistic Pain Relief Options for Pets
Dr. Matthew Heller
It is undeniable that for many families pets
have moved from the backyard to the living
room, oftentimes even the bedroom! We want
to offer a comfortable life for our cats and dogs.
One very important aspect of care is to provide
effective pain management for our pets when
they feel discomfort.
Mounting evidence supports the use of
alternative modalities to effectively manage
pain. The “healing hands” of acupuncture and
veterinary spinal manipulation therapy (aka
“animal chiropractic” in human terms) are
being practiced on animals to aid in pain management. Likewise, holistic veterinarians are
equipped with a large arsenal of medications
to combat pain in their patients ranging from
nutraceutical supplements and homeopathic
remedies to Chinese herbal formulas.
Herbal medicine has been practiced for
millenia across the globe. Herbs have healing
powers that are capable of balancing the physical dimensions of animals by promoting the
free flow of energy and resolving stagnation.
Herbal formulas are prepared for pets suffering
from musculoskeletal injuries due to an acute
trauma like a sprain or back injury or a chronic
discomfort such as arthritis.
Acupuncture is another modality utilized to
relieve acute or chronic pain in pets. Acupuncture balances the energy by redirecting its flow
and, thereby, assisting the body to heal. It is
a method of encouraging the body to promote
natural healing and improved function. General
conditions treated by acupuncture include:
arthritis, back pain, muscle spasms, stroke,
and muscular pain.
“Animal Chiropractic” (aka Veterinary
Spinal Manipulation Therapy/VSMT) corrects
misalignments in the spine, restoring motion
to the spine and proper nerve and muscle
function. Pets may become misaligned during
a trauma, over-exertion, or just the normal
“wear and tear” of everyday life. Correcting the
misalignments by performing an adjustment
will allow the body to work at full function
and heal itself.
With acupuncture and VSMT, a simple acute
problem, such as a sprain, may require fewer
treatments, whereas more severe or chronic
ailments may require repeat sessions.
As with any medical condition facing your
pet, your holistic or integrative veterinarian
is your best ally in identifying and managing
your pet’s pain. Pain management requires a
team effort, with the end goal of a happier and
healthier companion.
Matthew Heller, DVM is a doctor of veterinary
medicine and owner of All about PetCare, a veterinary hospital providing holistic and traditional care
of small animals in Middletown, OH

Vaccine or Titer?
By R.E. Neubauer, D.V.M., M.B.S., N.D.
The vaccine issue has become quite
controversial over the past several years
which, in my opinion, is more due to the
American Veterinary Medical Association
than the small animal practitioners. So,
why would this be true if vaccines are
safe and necessary? And if they are not
necessary, why do so many veterinarians require vaccines be given every one
to three years? If you are a responsible
dog /cat caregiver, you obviously want
the best medical care/advice for your
loved one.
Because information is easy to obtain
in today’s world, be it true or false, accurate or misleading, a person should
do homework in order to ensure he/she
is receiving true and accurate information in the subject being investigated.
Antibody levels to disease pathogens
(viruses) are acquired in one of two
ways: 1) natural exposure, i.e. natural
immunity, and 2) purposeful exposure
(vaccination), i.e. passive immunity. If
vaccines are given, it should be when the
immune system is prepared to develop
an antibody response (protection); for
pups and kittens this would be at the 8,
12,and 16 week age levels.
Let’s assume vaccines were given at
these ages, or natural exposure without
death occurred -- how would one know
if the animal in question was protected?
Your veterinarian can determine this with
a simple blood test called a titer, which
can be done in the hospital or sent out to
a local laboratory. This test will measure
antibody response indicating a positive
(good-protection) or negative (not protected) level. Because there are multiple
vaccines available, and not all are necessary, according to the American Animal
Hospital Association, the caregiver must
be aware of which are recommended
(these are called CORE vaccines) and
those which are not required. Interestingly, the rabies vaccination is the only
vaccine required by law, but it is also the
vaccine that causes the greatest number
of adverse reactions. Consider also that
running titers for rabies does not validate
the animal is protected, but the same
titer result is used to prove immunization
status when transporting dogs/cats out
of the continental USA.
In my opinion, vaccinations are important when given at the proper time,
but over-vaccination can lead to autostimulation against the body’s own
DNA. This has been proven to lead to
cancerous tumors at the injection site,
as well as clinical problems associated
with the thyroid, heart, red blood cells,
and connective tissues.
In conclusion, think about vaccines
as a positive protection, but realize that
over-doing stimulation may bring about
inflammatory reactions that end up being chronic problems for your pet. Titer
evaluation may be the answer to keeping the vaccines to a minimum and your
loved one’s health at a maximum.

Is Your Dog Scared of Thunderstorms?
By Steven Stratemeyer, D.V.M.
If your dog is terrified of thunderstorms, then Evendale-Blue Ash Pet
Hospital can help! For many dogs, thunderstorms can be a scary experience.
During the storms, the dog might shake
and pant excessively, try to hide somewhere, and even not want to eat. If your
dog is behaving this way during storms,
we should see the dog for an appointment and design a specific plan to help.
The purpose of this plan is to help control and desensitize the dog to the noise
heard during the storms. This plan may
include medication, which will decrease
the dog’s anxiety while you teach him
what to do during the storm. One thing
we try to do is teach the dog to go to a
safe place for treats. Then when a storm
comes, you can take the dog to the safe
place where he feels comfortable. The
worst thing you can do is punish the dog
for his behavior because he will associate the storms with the punishment and
can make the behavior worse during the
next storm. In addition, you do not want
to pet or console the dog while it is shaking or hiding because that rewards the
dog’s behavior of being scared. When
trying to make things better for the dog,
sometimes we are making them worse.
The best thing we can do is to prevent the scared behavior. We need
to act as if thunderstorms are no big
deal. As the owner, we need to be the
leader in the household because the
dog will look to you to see what behavior is appropriate. If the dog sees
you as calm, he then will be calm as
well. For more information, call us for
an appointment today at 563-0410.

The Last Battle
If it should be that I grow frail and
weak and pain should keep me from
my sleep,
then will you do what must be done,
for this––the last battle–– can’t be
won.
You will be sad I understand, but
don’t let grief then stay your hand,
for on this day, more than the rest,
your love and friendship must stand
the test.
We have had so many happy years,
you wouldn’t want me to suffer so.
When the time comes, please, let
me go.
Take me to where to my needs
they’ll tend, only, stay with me till the
end
and hold me firm and speak to me
until my eyes no longer see.
I know in time you will agree It is a
kindness you do to me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
from pain and suffering I have been
saved.
Don’t grieve that it must be you who
has to decide this thing to do; we’ve
been so close––we two––these years,
don’t let your heart hold any tears.

When a Beloved Pet Has Died
Heavenly Father,
We give our pets back to You, dear
Lord, Who first gave them to us.
Yet, as You did not lose them in
giving, so we have not lost them
by their return. Life is eternal and
love is immortal, and death is only

What’s In A Name?
Pet lovers will not be surprised to find that the number one dog name in America is
Buddy, which means “close friend.” Pets are our best friends. Below are some names
that mean “friend” that are not as well-known. You may want to consider them when
you name your next pet.
Top 10 Reasons to License Your Dog
#10. It’s a FREE RIDE HOME for
your best friend
#9. It’s a cheap insurance policy
and the purr-fect gift.
#8. It tells everyone that your dog
is not a stray and anyone can look up
the owner.
#7. It’s a legal I.D. and proof of
ownership.
#6. Licensed dogs are held at the
shelter for 14 days instead of 3.
#5. It’s a phone call home for a
dog that can’t tell us where he lives.
#4. Registrations help us notify
dog owners in case of disease outbreaks.
#3. License fees help stray,
homeless, and injured dogs.
#2. Veterinarian help is available
if your dog is found seriously injured
and we can’t reach you.
And the number one reason to license you dog is that it’s the law and
nobody wants a $100 ticket.

Caring for Senior “Pet-i-zens”TM
By Darlene Ehlers
I’ve had the pleasure of owning a pet sitting service now for over 15 years and have
taught pet first aid for the past 4 years. Many
of the pets I care for have now become senior
Pet-izen’s™ and require a little more TLC.
Old age for our pets is considered a condition
and not an illness. It happens over time until
one day we realize our furry friend just isn’t
the same. They may begin to take more time
getting up to go for a walk or take more time
eating their favorite food.
Some of the signs of old age are: incontinence, change in appetite, excessive panting,
stiffness in the joints, loss of hearing or sight,
sleeping more, decrease in activity, change in
behavior, difficulty chewing, ulcers, lumps
or masses, increased water consumption,
change in weight, difficulty getting up, bad
or foul smelling breath or intolerance to
changes in temperatures (Pet Tech Inc.) Once
a pet reaches the age of seven they are at a
higher risk for these age related conditions
and should be seen by a veterinarian for a
preventative geriatric health screening. Lab
tests can sometimes pick up irregularities long
before symptoms begin.
It’s best to keep a journal as your pet ages.
This can help your veterinarian determine if
the signs you are seeing are just due to your
pet’s natural aging process or perhaps there
is some other underlying medical issue. The
top 3 “old age” conditions are kidney failure,
diabetes and thyroid imbalance. These conditions can be treated with medication, however
by the time kidney problems show up on a
blood test there is a good chance that they
have lost about 75% of their kidney function.
Good dental health is just as important for
senior pets as it is for younger ones. Poor
dental health can lead to such problems as
change in appetite, difficulty chewing, foul
smelling breath and weight loss. It’s a good
idea to begin a regimen of cleaning your pets’
teeth on a regular basis beginning at an early
age. Dental cleanings can be done at any age
as long as your pet has no underlying medical issues.
Excessive panting, stiffness in the joints,
decrease in activity, difficulty in getting up
can all be signs of arthritis. A good rule of
thumb is that if your pet is having trouble
going upstairs the problem is most likely with
his/her hips, if they are having difficulty going
downstairs it’s most likely a problem with
their shoulders. Pain from arthritis can also
cause a change in behavior.
Whether old or young taking care of our
pets is our responsibility. Providing them
with a well balanced diet, fresh air, sunshine,
exercise, supplements, regular dental cleanings and annual wellness checks AND learning pet first aid is just part of being a caring,
conscientious, responsible and loving pet
owner. We owe it to our pets who give us their
unconditional love!

Aid teaching CPR, First Aid & Care for pets

Choosing a Product For Your Pet
By Alan Schrager
What do you look for when choosing a
product for your pet? Ideally, a dog food
is between 20-25% protein. Most reviews
favor the higher end of the scale, 24-25%,
excluding puppy formulas and grain-free
foods, which are higher. The food should
be free from corn and wheat. These are
not “bad” ingredients, but they have been
known to cause allergic reactions; itching,
scratching, and hot spots. Corn and wheat
are also less expensive ingredients, and you
will generally pay more for products that do
not contain them. Look for dog foods that
contain natural products and no chemical
preservatives. Better quality foods contain
a diverse array of ingredients and address
different aspects of nutritional support.
Choosing the right product will keep
pets healthy, which has real financial
benefits. Americans currently spend more
than $13 billion a year taking their pets to
the veterinarian. Our pets are subject to
many of the same diseases we encounter;
obesity, diabetes, cancer, high blood pres-
sure, and organ diseases. Letting your dog
become overweight can take two years off
his lifespan, and current research shows
that more than half of all dogs and cats
are overweight or obese. Diabetes in cats
and dogs is rising faster than diabetes rates
in humans! Just like humans, so much of
this can be prevented by proper nutrition,
appropriate feeding, and exercise. Our pets
cannot make these decisions, so it is important for us as pet owners to make the most
informed decisions on behalf of our pets.
In addition to great products, we at Nature’s Select of Dayton and Southwestern
Ohio are proud to provide knowledgeable
people to assist you with issues and changes during your pet’s life. We encourage
you to contact us and let us help you with
your pet’s nutritional well being. Made in
the U.S.A. products with personalized and
caring customer services is our mission.
Alan Schrager owns Nature’s Select of
Dayton and Southwestern Ohio.

Why Mobile?
By Nancy Holland
Mobile grooming services are quite popular
among busy pet owners who don’t have the
time, equipment or the ability to groom their pets
themselves. In addition to the care from a trained
professional, this service offers the convenience
of “at-your-door” pet grooming for individuals
juggling hectic schedules, homebound seniors,
service dogs that need to stay close to home,
and a range of other pet owners who don’t want
their pets exposed to other animals, or the added
anxiety of traveling to a traditional groomer. No
matter the breed, routine grooming not only
keeps your pet looking and feeling great, but
more importantly, it enhances your dog’s health,
comfort and social acceptance.
Save time, money & gas - Under the traditional
groomer scenario, the pet owner drops off the
pet early in the day and typically will receive a
call when finished – a process that can take
most of the day or the added inconvenience of
waiting at a shop until finished.
Client convenience – In order to accommodate
the lifestyle and schedule of the owner, it is not
necessary to be home; access to the pet is all
that is needed. Mobile grooming salons are
self-contained so there is no hook-up to your
water or electricity. No need to transport a dirty,
shedding pet in the car, to a shop, or taking the
chance of the pet becoming car sick. Pricing
for this personalized service tends to be higher
because of traveling to you which pet owners
are happy to pay, for this added convenience.
Stress-free - Leaving home can be stressful
enough, but knowing that the majority of the day
will be spent in a cage waiting to be groomed,
surrounded by other pets unable to play or
investigate the environment, pets can become
agitated, upset, and physically sick. By not riding
in a vehicle to an unfamiliar location and being
left at a shop, the stress is greatly reduced.
This in turn, provides caring for a calmer, more
relaxed pet, resulting in a more enjoyable grooming experience which pet owners appreciate.
Depending on the pet, grooming sessions on
an average will take approximately 1 - 2 hours.
One-on-one attention – Mobile pet stylists
are able to focus more on the task, at hand,
of grooming without the interruptions. They
pride themselves on being able to provide the
individual attention the pet deserves, as well
as providing peace of mind for the pet owner.
Typically, the same stylist will groom the pet at
each visit which increases the pet’s comfort level
creating a bond between the pet and the stylist.
As with all service providers, simply finding a
talented, reputable stylist requires doing some
homework. Currently, there are no licensing
requirements to ensure that the stylist has a
certain amount of training, experience, and
education. This is why it’s important to choose
your stylist carefully by doing some research
i.e. veterinarian referrals, searching online,
personal recommendations before hiring any
service provider.
Nancy Holland, professional pet stylist and
Owner of wag ‘n detail®, is currently servicing
parts of SW Ohio, SE Indiana, and Northern
KY. She is a graduate of the NASH Academy
of Animal Arts - well-known throughout the
US for turning out highly skilled, sought-after
pet stylists who are highly respected in the
grooming industry. She attends continuing education seminars, trade shows, and
competitive grooming competitions around
the country.

Lawn Care and Your Pets
By Joe Doscher
A quick glance at the label on any Lawn Care
Chemical product tells us that we shouldn’t
breathe them, get them on our skin, or ingest
them. So we take the proper precautions to
avoid their ill effects. Unfortunately, we often
forget about their potential effects on our pets.
Our pets run, play, roll, and dig where lawn
chemicals are applied. So if we use lawn chemicals, it could put pets at serious risk.
Pesticides are lawn chemical products that
are designed to kill lawn pests. The most common pesticides used on lawns are insecticides
and herbicides. Both types are bad for pets.
Insecticides usually work by interfering
with an insect’s nervous system. This kills the
insect shortly after contact. Under normal circumstances, insecticides do not kill humans or
animals, but they can have detrimental effects
on their nervous systems.
Humans are usually careful not to have prolonged contact with these chemicals. But pets
are oblivious to their presence, and therefore
more likely to suffer ill effects. Herbicides are
used to kill unwanted plants. Those usually
used on lawns are designed to kill weeds but
leave grass and foliage unharmed. A frequent
ingredient in herbicides is 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D). 2,4-D was one of the main
ingredients in Agent Orange, an herbicide used
during the Vietnam War that has caused health
problems in veterans. Studies have shown that
2,4-D can enter the systems of dogs, and it is
believed to be associated with the development
of malignant lymphoma.
Today, homeowners have a wide range of
natural, or “Bio Rational” products that are just
as effective as their chemical counterparts.
These include Milky Spore and beneficial nematodes for grub and other insect control. What’s
more, proper use of fertilizers can improved turf
density, outcompeting weeds for space in your
lawn and minimizing lawn disease.

Lawn Care.

Did You Know?
Professor Pup says, “If none are spayed or neutered, a female dog, her mate, and their offspring
can produce 67,000 dogs in 6 years!”
United Pet Fund
“Empowering all those who help needy animals!”
United Pet Fund was founded in 2010 as
a nonpro it organization with the express
purpose of ‘Helping Where Needed’ for
Animal Care and Service Organizations
(ACSOs). With that philosophy, we have
provided: Scholarship funds for ACSO
volunteers to attend continuing education
conferences; Handyman services for assistance in the repair and maintenance of
shelters; Pet Health Days event in underserved areas such as Over the Rhine;
Emergency funds when needed for unexpected predicaments; and Nonproϔit
leadership management seminars/
webinars, along with helpful shelter/
rescue-topics seminars, to the ACSO volunteers and leadership. UPF will follow
the creed of the ancient Chinese proverb
that states, ‘Give a man a ish, and you feed
him for a day. Teach him to ish, and you
feed him for a lifetime.’ We look to give a
‘HAND UP, and NOT A HANDOUT’.
Currently we are working on becoming
a national resource and support organization for the smaller ‘mom-and-pop’ ACSOs. UPF will become a Nonpro it ACSOMember Services Organization that will
provide basic business services needed
by all nonpro its to become successful.
Eventually, with the economic advantage
that comes with having large numbers of
members, it will allow us to offer access
to discounted business services for our
members, including, but not limited to,
products and services that are needed
by all nonpro it animal service and care
organizations: Legal and Accounting,
Insurance, Public Relations, IT services,
Credit/Financing Services, Pet Products
(including food and health supplies),
Webinar-based training in Nonpro it
leadership and management skills, as well
as Animal Behavior and Health needs. The
list can go on, but we have a place to start.
With all these in one location, and with a
central organization that understands the
needs of the smaller ACSOs, the animals
served by these organizations will be the
ones that will bene it in the end. Check out
a very telling video about UPF’s mission
on our website, www.unitedpetfund.org.

Are There Animals in Heaven?
Are There Animals In Heaven?
(All Biblical quotations in this article are from the New Revised Standard Version.)
Animal lovers believe that heaven
will reunite them with beloved pets.
Many passages in the Bible confirm
God’s love and concern for all of His
creation. Genesis 1:25 “God made
the wild animals of the earth of every
kind, and the cattle of every kind, and
everything that creeps upon the ground
of every kind. And God saw that it was
good.”
God included every living creature in
His covenant with Noah after the flood,
Genesis 9:16. God told Jonah of His
concern for the people and animals in
Nineveh, Jonah 4:11. God delighted
in telling Job of the beauty and majesty
of His creatures and how He cares for
them, Job 38:39 – 39:30. Nathan used
an example of a pet lamb to show David
that he had sinned. 2 Samuel 12: 3,
“but the poor man had nothing but one
little ewe lamb, which he had bought.
He brought it up, and it grew up with
him and with his children; it used to eat
of his meager fare, and drink from his
cup, and lie in his bosom, and it was
like a daughter to him.” There are two
witnesses recorded in the Bible who
saw animals in heaven. Peter, in Acts
10:10-12 and John in Revelation 5:13.
King Solomon, known for his great
wisdom, wrote in Ecclesiastes 3:14, “I
know that whatever God does endures
forever; nothing can be added to it, nor
anything taken from it; God has done
this, so that all should stand in awe
before Him.” Verses 19-20, “For the
fate of humans and the fate of animals
is the same; as one dies, so dies the
other. They all have the same breath,
and humans have no advantage over the
animals; for all is vanity. All go to one
place; all are from the dust, and all turn
to dust again.” He wrote in Ecclesiastes
12:7, “and the dust returns to the earth as
it was, and the breath returns to God who
gave it.” Isaiah was given a glimpse of
the new heavens and new earth to come.
Isaiah 65: 25, “The wolf and the lamb
shall feed together, the lion shall eat
straw like the ox; but the serpent – its
food shall be dust! They shall not hurt
or destroy on all my holy mountain.”
The Psalms are full of references to
God deserving praise from all living
creatures because he created and cares
for them. In Psalm 50:10-11, God said,
“For every wild animal of the forest is
mine, the cattle on a thousand hills. I
know all the birds of the air, and all that
moves in the field is mine.” Psalm 100:
1 “Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all
the earth.” Psalm 104:24&30, “O Lord,
how manifold are your works! In wisdom you have made them all; the earth
is full of your creatures…30When you
send forth Your Spirit, they are created;
and You renew the face of the ground.”
King David wrote in Psalm 145:9 “The
Lord is good to all, and His compassion
is over all that he has made.” Psalms
148:5 “Let them praise the name of the
Lord, for he commanded and they were
created.” Psalm 150:6 “Let everything
that breathes praise the Lord!”
Many of the events in Jesus’ life were
shared with animals: His birth, Luke 2:
7, “And she gave birth to her firstborn
son and wrapped him in bands of cloth
and laid Him in a manger, because there
was no place for them in the inn”; after
His baptism, Mark 1: 12-13, “And the
Spirit immediately drove Him out into
the wilderness. He was in the wilderness
for forty days, tempted by Satan; and He
was with the wild beasts; and the angels
waited on Him”; and on Palm Sunday
when he rode into town on a donkey,
Matthew 21: 5, “Tell the daughter of
Zion, Look, your King is coming to you,
humble, and mounted on a donkey, and
on a colt, the foal of a donkey.”
Throughout the Bible animals have
been included in God’s plans for His
creation. This includes the life to come.

Pet Hospice: It’s about time
By Tammy Wynn
Perhaps one of the most heart
wrenching struggles a pet parent faces
with a terminally ill pet is determining, “when is it time?” It is a struggle
because there is no definitive, black
and white answer to this frequently
asked question. It is subjective. But
it is more than that. It also stirs up
ethical, moral and spiritual questions.
It is complex.
I’ve developed a tool to help my
clients wrestle with this question in a
more structured way. If the question
is, “When is it time to send my pet to
the rainbow bridge?” the scale uses an
easy acronym of RAINBOW to help
the pet parent assess quality and better
answer the question. Are there changes
in: Routine, Attitude, Incontinence,
Nutrition, Breathing, Obvious Pain,
Walking? Hospice is a philosophy that
embraces the notion of living…really
living until you die.
That is also the goal of pet hospice.
The RAINBOW Scale© helps the pet
parent assess the quality of their pet’s
life. Are they really living? They may
not be living like they did when they
were puppies or kitties, but age is not
a disease. With age comes maturity
and stability. When we assess the
quality of a pet’s life, we want to do
so in an age appropriate way. With
age the pet will slow down naturally,
and sleep more. Having a safe, secure
environment to rest in, is one of the
great gifts a pet parent can provide a
beloved aging pet.

Technician, and owns Angel’s Paws.

How to Select a Boarding Kennel
By Barbara Schwartz
Every day, people face the question of what to do with
their pets when traveling, illness, or family emergencies disrupt the normal routine. Because a competent,
ethical boarding kennel is an important part of your pet
care program, and because the selection of a boarding
kennel can be a confusing process, here are a few tips
to give your pet a happy and safe boarding experience,
and enable you to enjoy your time away from home,
content that your pet is receiving the best care possible.
ASK YOUR VET - this is the primary method of kennel selection.
RECOMMENDATION OF FRIENDS - Satisfied customers are the best recommendation that a kennel can
receive. Ask your friends and neighbors about their
experiences.
CHECK WITH THE BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU
- Ask about a specific kennels’ reputation, and if any
complaints have been lodged against them.
Another VERY important tip:
TOUR THE KENNEL(S) - Everyone has their own
yardstick. If visiting several doesn’t make one stand out,
call and ask more questions until it becomes obvious
which facility is right for you and your pet.
Preparing for Boarding:
It is often a good idea to make your reservations as
early as possible. If you wait until the last minute, you
may be disappointed. Make sure that you understand
the kennel’s policy regarding immunizations, and discuss
this with your veterinarian as well. If bringing medications,
special food, or treats you should consider bringing extra
in case of a disruption in your schedule. Your kennel may
also provide extra services such as play times or walks.
They may also do grooming if wanted.
Town and Country Kennel and Cattery has been a
destination for our 4-footed guests going on 27 years.
10 reasons why you should consider boarding
with us:
1. Spacious indoor/outdoor dog runs.
2. Facility is owner occupied.
3. Long-term, loving employees.
4. 5 acre walking area.
5. Recommended by local veterinarians
6. Flexible feed schedules, your food or ours
7. We do boarding and grooming only, our focus is
completely on the care of your pet.
8. Reasonable grooming/boarding prices.
9. “Report cards” keep accurate track of your pets’ physical/emotional well-being during their stay.
10. We LOVE dogs and cats!

Wild Bird Treat
Remember our feathered friends
in cold weather
1 cup peanut butter
1 cup shortening
1 cup all purpose flour
4 cups plain oatmeal
Cream peanut butter and shortening. Add in flour and oatmeal.
Form into balls or spread on pine
cones and place into crooks of tree
branches or at the base of trees or
areas where birds come for food.
If possible, try to keep fresh water
outside. More animals perish
from dehydration than starvation.
Non-toxic Weed Killer Recipe
This is good to use in yards with pets
and children running around.
1/2 gallon of Apple Cider Vinegar
1/4 cup table salt
1/2 tsp. Dawn liquid dish soap
Mix above ingredients in a spray bottle. Spray weeds thoroughly.
The Dawn dish soap strips the weed
of its protective oils so the vinegar can
work with deadly force.
This recipe costs around $6.40. Kills
weeds on 1st application.

Dogs…the ultimate fitness motivator!
By Billie Mendoza
Unlike humans, most dogs like exercising,
it’s fun! You know that feeling when you’re
comfortably tucked in bed, down comforter
cocooning you and you’re tempted to hit that
snooze button just one more time. Yeah, it’s
hard to get the motivation to rise early for
an exercise session. That’s why there are
so many articles on HOW to get-and staymotivated. Now, if you’re a dog owner, you
also know that patiently pleading stare you
get when it’s time to go out. Dogs don’t have
“snooze” buttons.
For many dogs, exercise is like recess!
Remember school days when you were
released from the confines of the classroom
to the great outdoors? Yes, like kids, dogs
love getting fresh air, exploring new sites,
sounds, smells, running, agility (think
merry-go-rounds and monkey bars) burning
extra energy! Try tapping into that childlike
excitement.
Of course, the benefits of exercise (a.k.a.
play) are fact. It keeps you and your pet’s
heart healthy, weight in check, bones strong,
not to mention many, MANY, other health
benefits. Exercising with your dog clears
the mind, reduces stress and anxiety, and
gives you the time to bond. You’ll notice
your energy level increases by minimizing
the effects of everyday stressors and helping
you sleep better. You will also recognize that
regular exercise for your dogs reduces pentup energy levels, making them calmer, better
behaved and HEALTHY!
Dogs usually don’t mind the weather,
either. So when you think it may be too
windy, too wet, or mulling some other excuse
to procrastinate, just look at your dog’s happy
face. It’s hard to resist that kind of encouragement. Let’s just call it “Mutt Motivation!”
If you don’t have a furry friend to motivate
you, check out all the area’s rescues and
shelters to find the perfect exercise partner
and most loyal companion.

Training With Treats
By Jeff King
Dogs (and most cats) will do just about
anything for their favorite tasty treat. BUT we
also know that too many treats can make our
best friends over-weight and if we use those
favorite treats too often they can lose their appeal. Remember a treat should make our best
buddy DO something. Sit, stay, come, go, lie
down, play dead, jump through a hoop can all
be part of play time.
What are the best kinds of training treats?
At Pets Plus we find that soft, pliable treats are
best. You can tear them into small pieces that
hold the pet’s attention. Keeping his attention is
critical and if the treat is too big then he won’t
learn as quickly.
In a quiet area, get your pet’s attention with
a piece of the treat. Make sure he sees the treat
in your hand and kneel down so you’re on his
level. Look at him and continue to give him
SMALL pieces for a minute or two. This is
called focusing. If he snatches at the treat, curl
your fingers and place your hands in your lap
for 30-45 seconds Tell your pet in a firm voice
“Easy!” Repeat as needed until he gets the idea
that taking the treat must be done gently.
Start with a simple trick such as “lay down.”
Making sure your pet is focused on you, show
him the piece of treat and slowly bring it down
to the ground while saying in a firm voice “Lay
Down!” He will naturally follow your hand
with his nose. When he gets to the Lay Down
position, give him a small piece of treat. Continue this for 6-8 times in a row. Stand up while
holding his attention and repeat the command.
If he responds correctly give him a piece of the
treat. If not, repeat the process.
Training is a process. Continually reinforce
what your pet learned before expecting him to
learn more. Good Luck!

Pack Structure
In a dog pack there are leaders and there
are followers. The leaders make sure the pack
stays safe, has enough to eat, and has shelter.
The leader must consistently provide all the
pack’s needs or he or she will be challenged
for leadership. Survival is the prime concern
of the pack; if the leader isn’t taking care of
ALL the pack’s needs there needs to be a
new leader.
In our homes there is also a pack. Fido
doesn’t know he’s a dog or that we’re people.
He knows that together we make a pack. We
are very good at providing love, food, shelter
and entertainment (toys) but we sometimes
don’t understand safety, from Fido’s point
of view.
What happens when Fido doesn’t view
us as canine leaders? He challenges us. This
challenge can be in many forms. He may bark
at everything, even us. He might ignore us
when we ask him to come or sit or stay. He
might become destructive or have toileting
“accidents.” There are numerous ways he
may challenge us, but it is usually some form
of misbehavior.
When Fido is challenging us the pack is
unbalanced. Fido doesn’t have the ability to
understand our world so he makes mistakes.
It’s up to us to understand his world. Once we
do, we can usually change Fido’s behavior
very quickly.
When the pack is in balance there is a more
harmonious relationship and there is peace
in the home. Isn’t that why you got Fido in
the first place? Call us at 1-877-500-BARK
(2275) if you want to know more.
Bark Busters, the world’s largest, most
trusted dog training company is a global
network of trained dog behavioral therapists
whose goal is to improve the relationship
between people and their companion dogs
using effective, humane, friendly methods
that appeal to canine psyche.

Rainbow Bridge
Just this side of heaven is a place called the Rainbow Bridge. When an
animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes
to the Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food,
water, and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All
the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor;
those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just
as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing: they
miss someone very special, someone who was left behind. They all
run and play together, but the day comes when suddenly one stops
and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; his eager body
begins to quiver. Suddenly he breaks from the group, flying over the
green grass, faster and faster. You have been spotted and when you and
your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion,
never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your
hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into those
trusting eyes so long gone from your life, but never absent from your
heart. Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together…

Kidney Disease In Pets
By Shari Camp
The kidneys are one of the filters in the
body. They filter the toxins out of the body
and into the bladder. They can be affected
by many different things including age,
viruses, parasites, cancer, trauma, poisons
and congenital or inherited disorders.
These are just some of the things that your
veterinarian has to rule out when trying to
figure out what is causing the kidneys to
have trouble functioning.
Pets can show a variety of different
signs when it comes to kidney disease.
Some of the signs are non-specific and can
be seen with other diseases or disorders.
The signs, although non-specific, are increased drinking and urination, vomiting,
weight loss, lethargy and decreased appetite. Because the signs can be non-specific,
your veterinarian may highly recommend
blood work and other diagnostics such as
a chemistry panel, complete blood count,
and urinalysis. He may also recommend,
based on the lab work, radiographs and
ultrasound.
When pets have kidney disease, they
can still live a full life but will likely have
a diet change and possible medications
added into their daily regimen. It all depends on the severity, cause of the kidney
disease, how their body responds to the
treatments and any other health concerns
that may arise. It is extremely important
to follow the recommendations from your
veterinarian in all cases of dealing with
your pet’s health. The success of the treatment may be dependent on how well the
recommendations are followed.
This article is written in honor and
memory of my Cavalier King Charles
Spaniel, Tucker, who went to the rainbow
bridge when his kidneys failed due to
old age.

You Are A Pet Parent...
if you have ever taken your dog to a
pet party
if you celebrate your pet’s birthday
if you have ever called your pet the
same term of endearment as you call your
spouse
if you have ever found a “pick up” baggie in your business suit
if you have ever shared an ice cream
cone with your pet
if you have ever taken a day off work
because your pet is sick
if you have ever left a party early because the pet needed to be fed
if you have ever installed a night light
for your pet
if you have ever had a conversation with
your pet when no one else was around
if you have ever gotten your pet a pet to
keep him company
if you usually have treats for your pet
in your pocket
if you have wipes, treats, towels, and
bowls in your cars
if the people at the drive through window know your pet by name
if you take vacations only where you
can take your pet
if you have your veterinarian on speed
dial
if you have a picture of your pet in your
wallet
if you tell your pet that he/she is going
to the spa when it’s time to be groomed
if you have ever made an appointment
with a professional photographer for your
pet’s portrait
if you take your pet to the drive-in movie
so he/she can see the new releases
This list is not all-inclusive but if you
have done one or more of these things,
you are not just a pet owner, you are a pet
parent. Congratulations!

Heaven
A
man and his dog were walking
along a road. The man was enjoying the scenery, when it suddenly
occurred to him that he was dead. He
remembered dying, and that the dog
walking beside him had been dead for
years. He wondered where the road was
leading them.
After a while, they came to a high, white
stone wall along one side of the road. It
looked like fine marble. At the top of a long
hill it was broken by a tall arch that glowed
in the sunlight. When he was standing before
it he saw a magnificent gate in the arch that
looked like Mother of Pearl, and the street
that led to the gate looked like pure gold. He
and the dog walked toward the gate, and as
he got closer, he saw a man at a desk to one
side. When he was close enough, he called
out, “Excuse me, where are we?”
“This is Heaven, sir,” the man answered.
“Wow! Would you happen to have some
water?” the man asked.
Of course, sir. Come right in, and I’ll have
some ice water brought right up.” The man
gestured, and the gate began to open.
“Can my friend,” gesturing toward his dog,
“come in, too?” the traveler asked.
“I’m sorry, sir, but we don’t accept pets.”
The man thought a moment and then
turned back toward the road and continued the way he had been going with his
dog. After another long walk, and at the
top of another long hill, he came to a dirt
road which led through a farm gate that
looked as if it had never been closed.
There was no fence. As he approached the
gate, he saw a man inside, leaning against
a tree and reading a book
“Excuse me!” he called to the reader. “Do
you have any water?”
“Yeah, sure, there’s a pump over there”.
The man pointed to a place that couldn’t
be seen from outside the gate. “Come on in.”
“How about my friend here?” the traveler
gestured to the dog.
“There should be a bowl by the pump.”
They went through the gate, and sure
enough, there was an old fashioned hand
pump with a bowl beside it. The traveler
filled the bowl and took a long drink himself, then he gave some to the dog. When
they were full, he and the dog walked back
toward the man who was standing by the
tree waiting for them.
“What do you call this place?” the traveler
asked.
“This is Heaven,” he answered.
“Well, that’s confusing,” the traveler said.
“The man down the road said that was
Heaven, too.”
“Oh, you mean the place with the gold
street and pearly gates? Nope. That’s
Hell.”
“Doesn’t it make you mad for them to use
your name like that?”
“No. I can see how you might think so, but
we’re just happy that they screen out the
folks who’ll leave their best friends behind.”
