Lures & Tours is honoured to
have Bob Izumi featured on the
cover of this first pocket-sized
Ontario directory. Bob and the
entire Izumi Outdoors organization are such great people.
We are also pleased to be featuring so many talented professionals on the covers of our
9 new regional maps. These
people are generous with sharing their fishing
knowledge in person and through many forms of
media. You’ll also find them contributing to many
charitable events, which is a part of the fishing
industry that Lures and Tours enjoys so much.
A sincere thank you to our advertisers who have
supported Lures & Tours since 2005, and who continue to extend their services and products to all of
us. They are “Fishing Friendly”. They put out the
welcome mat for people that include fishing in their
list of things to do.
Fishing is not only good business, it’s a great business.
$8.3 Billion* of the Canadian economy can be
attributed to recreational fishing. That applies to
lodging, camping, fishing boats, fishing tackle,
accessories and more.
Ontario has almost a third of the world’s fresh
water, which covers 158,000 sq. km. – spread out
over countless streams and rivers and over
250,000 lakes with dozens of game fish species.
Lures & Tours uses a Total Media approach to bring
you all this information. Everything in print is available online, including a host of our linked Social
Media outlets.
Ontario is an amazing place to be fishing, twelve
months of the year. Enjoy!

Eastern Ontario is bracketed by the St. Lawrence and Ottawa
Rivers to the provincial border and extends west to a line from
Kingston on Lake Ontario to just east of Renfrew. The Ottawa
River and the lakes and streams of the Ottawa Valley offer bass,
trout, pike, walleye and even catfish and whitefish. You’ll be
travelling through a part of the province rich in history with
many small towns that grew around their proximity to water.

What part of fish can be safely consumed?
Please follow this general advice:
1. Do not eat organs of any fish regardless of location. Organs
can be high in both heavy
metals and pesticides.
2. Consume only the skinless boneless dorsal fillets
of salmon, trout, carp and
channel catfish, especially
from the Great Lakes.
Consumption advisories on
these species in the Great
Lakes are usually based on
PCBs, mirex, toxaphene or
©Queen’s Printer for Ontario, 2011
dioxins. Because these
contaminants are attracted to fat, the highest concentration of contaminants is present in the fat deposits under the skin and in the belly
region.
3. Do not eat the eggs (roe) of fish, especially in spawning salmon
species (e.g. chinook and coho salmon), as they may contain higher levels of PCBs and other organic contaminants.
4. You may consume the whole side fillet of lean species such
as walleye, pike, bass, perch, and panfish from inland locations. Consumption advisories on these species are based
almost exclusively on mercury. Mercury is uniformly distributed
in the fillet and is not associated with deposits of fat.

Kids and Fishing
Kids and Fishing – A Guide’s View
continued from pg 18
The smile says it all! Fishing with kids can be very simple - they want quantity over quality - which means you
don't have to search the whole lake for the biggest fish.
Catching lots of fish from shore will work just fine.
We at Team LetsFish Guiding like to find an area
where children are able to catch plenty of fish and
more than one species. Targeting panfish (bluegill,
pumpkinseed, perch and rock bass) is the way to go.
It is best to involve kids in the whole fishing experience
starting with letting them help pick out what tackle or
bait to use. This will help give them a sense of pride
and accomplishment. Fishing can also be an educational experience through learning how to identify the
different species of fish and other wildlife encountered
during the time fishing. Fishing teaches valuable lessons in conservation, respect for the environment. It
builds confidence from learning something new and
following it through until they catch that first fish.
Fishing is an amazing opportunity for families to spend
quality time in the outdoors, making priceless memories.
This is something you can do at any age and enjoy it
into your golden years with your grandchildren. Kids
will ask lots of questions, and not just about fishing,
which makes this an invaluable experience for both
the children and the parents. It is a quiet time that is
continued on pg 19
relaxing and fun-filled.

by John Sedgwick
Make sure the experience is exciting and memorable. It's
not only about the catching of fish. Involve the kids with
the planning of the outing, making snacks (lots of snacks),
and catching the bait (digging up worms in the garden or
picking them after a rain). If fishing from shore, take
breaks and let them have some time to play and explore
the shore line. Just remember, safety first. Children
should always wear life jackets around the water.
Once your child is comfortable going out fishing,
encourage them to invite a friend so they can share the
experience with one of their peers. By letting them
teach a friend how to fish, they become “the expert”
which is a huge confidence booster. Additionally the
friendships your children can build through this pastime can last a lifetime. What better gift to give to
someone than the experience of fishing.
Team LetsFish Guiding specializes in teaching children and people new to the sport how to fish. We use
equipment that is child and beginner-friendly which is
the key to their enjoyment. Ultra-light spinning rods
and spincast reels help in detecting bites and they
make little fish feel like big fish on the line. Using quality equipment will also allow them to land the bigger
fish when they get the chance.

Lake, Moira River, and the northern Ottawa River east of
Algonquin Park.
Quinte is famous for its incredible walleye fishery all year, and
the timeless Prince Edward County, but don’t overlook the many
places inland for fishing a vast network of lakes and rivers.
Travelling this area is a joy, with two main east‑west corridors;
Highway 401 along Lake Ontario and Highway 7 through the
center, with scenic elevation changes and attractive waterways to
keep your interest. The landscape to the north is rugged and you’ll
find fast moving water for some variety in fishing techniques.

This extended region goes south to Lake Ontario and the municipalities
of Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa and east to Colborne.
On the east it runs directly north through Campbellford up to Bancroft.
It includes Algonquin Provincial Park and the Haliburton Highlands.
The western extent includes Dwight and the waters skirting Highway
35, down to include the Kawartha Lakes and Lake Scugog.
It’s hard to travel any distance at all in this part of Ontario and not see
evidence of how important fishing and boating is to the communities.
Tackle shops, marinas, resorts, campgrounds, restaurants and other busi‑
nesses are tuned in to making your stay an enjoyable one.

Fresh Water Summit of Canada
• COBOCONK
An official National Heritage Site, the Trent Severn Waterway runs 386 km across
Ontario from Trenton to Georgian Bay. It has become an integral part of communities
that rely on it for the tourism attractions it provides and for its essential function as a
watershed management system.
At the lock stations visitors and boaters will find overnight mooring - camping for
boaters or cyclists - electrical hookups - vehicle parking - water - washrooms.
The staff at the locks are very helpful and informative, both for boaters and land visitors.
Explore any part of the T-S-W when you get the chance. Boating: Mid May to Mid October

In the serene waters of Balsam Lake, in the heart of the Trent-Severn
Waterway, lies Canada’s highest body of fresh water, at 256.5 metres
above sea level, from which one can circumnavigate the world. Balsam
Lake is the only spot that gives the skipper the choice to go
east to the Atlantic Ocean, west to the Pacific Ocean,
south to the Caribbean Sea or north to the Arctic Ocean.

The Lake Simcoe Fisheries Stakeholder
Committee (LSFSC) was established by the Ministry of
Natural Resources (MNR) in June 2007 and includes representatives from well known stakeholder organizations
ranging from individual ice hut operators to local environmental organizations. The Committee provides advice and
recommendations to the Midhurst and Aurora District managers of the MNR on the management of the fisheries
resources of Lake Simcoe, Lake Couchiching and their
watersheds. The Committee also takes an active role in
promoting fisheries stewardship within the watershed to
improve the health of its fish community.

Today’s educated anglers are extremely cautious about
how they store and handle their catch so the fish survive
and are released in good condition. If in doubt, ask a pro.

You don't have to keep it! Catch and release and
selective harvest are two key principles that today's
modern angler uses to help make his/her contribution
to the future of a fishery.
Here are some basic tips to help you release your
catch in good condition so that some day someone
else may enjoy catching that fish too.
Do not take the fish out of the water for longer than is
necessary to remove the hook or quickly take photos.
Minimize handling of the fish so that you do not
remove its protective slime coat.
Don’t allow the fish to lay around on the grass or
rocks if you plan to release it.
Never grab a fish in the gills or by the eyes.
If you lift the fish with your thumb in its mouth (a common method for handling bass), keep your thumb
pointed downwards. Don’t hold it in a way that puts the
weight of the fish onto its bent jaw.

REGION 5 - WEST CENTRAL
This regions includes several of the tributaries of the extensive Saugeen
river system, popular with anglers and paddlers in Ontario for genera‑
tions. In addition there are the other well known rivers such as Maitland,
Grand, Speed, Thames and Nanticoke to name just a few.
Othe recreation and entertainment interests are well served by places like
Stratford, London, Kitchener‑Waterloo, Guelph and Brantford.
Many of the port towns on Lake Erie were founded on commercial fish‑
ing that continues to this day for domestic and export markets. Places
like Port Dover offer scenic beaches, restaurants and cottage rentals for
an enjoyable family fishing retreat.

This region includes the bigger waters of Lake Huron and Lake Erie, con‑
nected by St. Clair River, Lake St. Clair and the Detroit River. Inland are
the many rivers and smaller lakes feeding to the Great Lakes. Fishing
charter operators are plentiful, ready to take your and your friends out
for a day on any of these lakes. If you want to try fishing on some big
water in comfort and with the right gear supplied along with the know
how to use it, give charter fishing a try.
There are many well known getaway places like Grand Bend, Kincardine,
Point Pelee and Mitchell's Bay for fishing and family times at a cottage
or other accommodation.

Dominated by Georgian Bay, this has to be one of the most pop‑
ular fishing and summer vacation destinations in southern
Ontario.
Tobermory, Wasaga Beach, "Penetang", Honey Harbour, the
Muskokas, Parry Sound, French River, Lake Nipissing are
names that evoke memories for many Ontarians.
The region is just as attractive to anglers as ever, with a large
choice of species to catch, the kind of water to fish and the vari‑
ety of places to stay. Many of the lodges further north are season‑
al so be sure to check ahead for availability.

This area starts at the south with Manitoulin Island, a unique
place in the world, being the largest lake bound island in the
world. It has 108 of its own fresh water lakes, again many of
those with their own islands. Manitoulin Island has an area of
2,766 square kilometres (1,068 sq. miles). We include
Manitoulin Island in this area because of its access from
Espanola and proximity to the north shore of Lake Huron.
This part of Ontario offers fly‑in fishing, lodges and a great mix
of rivers and lakes. The shore line scenery of Lake Superior is leg‑
endary. Investigate the many choices of places to stay throughout
this vast part of Ontario where great fishing is the reason guests
keep coming back. Lodges are the all inclusive choice where food,
accommodation, boats, fishing guides and more are part of the
package.
The winter is not to be ignored either. Ice fishing and snowmo‑
biling are staples of outdoor life and the opportunities are end‑
less.

The far north of Ontario, bordering Manitoba and Minnesota. There is
actually a time zone change west of Thunder Bay.
Fly‑in fishing and remote lodges are popular for both Americans and
Canadian anglers on vacation. You can get the basics or go for five‑star
treatment when it comes to accommodation.
As for fishing ‑ there are 150,000 lakes, rivers and streams spread across
approximately 310,800 square kilometres (120,000 square miles.)
