AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY
160th Fall Fair Sept. 8th to 11th, 2016, the weekend after
Labour Day.
Throughout the existence of our Society, we have
worked very diligently to enrich the conditions of the
surrounding area by researching the needs of the
agricultural community and then developing the
programs to meet those needs; by promoting the
conservation of natural resources; by encouraging the
beautification of the agricultural community; by
supporting and providing facilities to encourage activities
to enrich rural life; and by holding an annual agricultural
fair every Labour Day weekend at which various
competitions, educational displays and entertaining
venues are provided for every member of the family.
This year's theme is “Sew it, Grow it, Show it”.
Thursday, Sept. 8th: 5 - 7:30 pm: Annual Kick-off Beef
Supper with the current Ambassador, Ambassador
Contestants & Sponsors decorating their cakes. 6pm-8pm
– “Arthur's Motors & Machines”
Friday, Sept. 9th at 7pm: Parade followed by Opening
Ceremonies, Entertainment along with the Ambassador
Contestants Speeches & Cake Auction. Grounds Open
for viewing. Vendors and Exhibits open.
Saturday, Sept. 10th: Inflatables for all Ages, Nascar
Bob Race Cars, 4H Shows in Dairy, Beef & Sheep, Welsh
and Sport Pony show, Baby show, Kids Entertainment &
Activities, Chili Cook Off, Exhibits, and Vendors
Sunday, Sept. 11th: Arthur Lions Club Brunch,
Inflatables for All Ages, Nascar Bob Race Cars, Western
Horse Show, Kids Entertainment & Activities, Quilt Block

month at 8:00 pm. It's a great way to meet friends and
participate in a positive way in our community.

HOCKEY TOURN.
The game of ringette was invented in Canada by Sam Jacks, who at the time was the director of
parks and recreation in North Bay, Ontario. The game, developed as an on-ice skating game for
females, was first played in Espanola in northern Ontario in the winter of 1963—64.

Members meet monthly on the 4th Tuesday of the month at
7:30pm in the Historical Exhibit Rooms at 146 George
Street. Anyone interested in the history of the area will be
made welcome.

Come visit our newly renovated exhibition space.
Located in the architectural landmark on Main Street, the
Mount Forest Museum & Archives is currently showing a
large display of local sports heritage with uniforms,
photographs and unique stories. Our volunteers also
provide support for all genealogical or historic inquiries.
Visitors to the Archives can find cemetery records, family
histories, census and business listings from 1871, and
many other helpful research documents.
The Historical Exhibit rooms are open Wednesday's from
1pm-3pm, as well as any other time that the “Visitors
Welcome” banner is hanging in front of the building.

CLUB
Wellington County 4-H Clubs are open to anyone age 9 –
21. With the motto “learn to do by doing” the 4-H Club helps
young people to improve their personal skills, especially
working with others.
With a wide array of projects including beef, dairy, goat,
sheep, rabbits, landscaping, conservation as well as
homemaking clubs like sewing and cooking.
Beginning in April, members are active in numerous
clubs that conclude with the clubs at local Fairs.

Heritage Society meetings are held the 2nd Thursday of
every month, at 2pm, in The Old Post Office.

An energetic, fun-filled camp for children 6-14, runs from 9am-3pm. Daily, at
Arthur Community Centre (outside).

IN BECOMING A VOLUNTEER.
Campers will play soccer, baseball & street hockey and also enjoy many
other activities with the entire group. This is a Christian-based camp with
emphasis on making everyone a winner, not just the most skilled. Nutritious
and delicious lunches provided each day by local churches.

Air Cadets is a dynamic, structured youth program that
offers Canadian teenagers a variety of interesting and

So baseball is America's game, eh? Explain this: a year before the game's
accepted creator Abner Doubleday is credited with founding the sport, the
first recorded baseball game in North America took place in Beachville,
Ontario. Teams from Oxford and Zorra townships played on June 4, 1838.

POOL ADMITTANCE GUIDELINE: Children under the age of 10 years who are non-swimmers must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who is at least 12 years of age and responsible for their direct supervision.
Caregivers age 12 to 17 are not allowed to supervise more than two bathers at one time. An adult 18+ may not supervise more than four bathers at one time, of which only two may be under the age of 6. Children under the age
of 10 who are swimmers (able to demonstrate comfort in the water and PASS the facility swim test) may be admitted to the swimming pool unaccompanied. Children 7 to 9 years of age may attempt a swim test to determine if they
may swim unaccompanied in the water. A caregiver must be present for the swim test. Once a swimmer passes the swim test, they may swim unaccompanied in the water. Non-Swimmers MUST remain within arm’s reach of
their caregiver at all times. Any child 6 years of age or younger must have a caregiver in the water at all times.

EMERGENCY 1ST AID WITH CPR B
A great way to exercise at any age!
This is a low impact workout that allows individuals
to exercise at their own pace.
Begins: July 14th, Last Class Sept. 1st (8 Classes)
Physical fitness, decision making and judgment skills are
strongly stressed in the course.
First Aid, rescue
breathing, tows and carries and release methods are
taught as well as preparation for rescues of increased risk.
Stroke efficiency and endurance and a timed swim are also
developed. A required exam will take place on the last day
of class. (Rain date will be the day following.) Candidates
are responsible for attending the exam.

The Canadian Swim Patrol Program is the on-ramp to
lifeguarding. Ability is the only prerequisite.
The Swim Patrol provides enriched training for those who
are ready to go beyond learn-to-swim. Swim Patrol’s
three levels - Rookie, Ranger and Star - continue to
develop participants’ swim strokes and provide the skill
foundation that prepares them for success in the
Society’s Bronze medal awards.

the needs and interests of people with intellectual disabilities. The group
currently offers 5 pin bowling Saturday mornings from September through May
at the Mt. Forest Bowling Lanes. They also offer Figure Skating in Arthur, a
recreational summer swimming program at the Arthur Pool and Bocci Ball at
Murphy Park in Mount Forest.

Canadian swimmer Marilyn Bell, was the first woman to swim across Lake Ontario. She began taking
swimming lessons in a local pool at age 9, and by 1947 began competing in long-distance swimming. She

Heavy rain reduces the visibility of the pool bottom, the pool will be cleared.
Patrons will be allowed back into the pool when the pool bottom becomes visible again.
Offering programs & services for children birth to 6 yrs of
age & their parents/caregivers. Monthly calendars and
newsletters are available on our website.
If temperature falls below 10 Degrees Celsius the pool will be closed.
Red Cross swimming lessons will not be cancelled due to weather.
Dry activities and water safety will be taught.
Playgroup locations are found in:
Mount Forest, Drayton, Moorefield, Palmerston, and
Arthur.
LAP SWIM
Individuals can swim lengths of the pool at their own pace. Kick boards and leg

MOUNT FOREST & DISTRICT ARTS COUNCIL
This non-profit organization promotes & encourages the
arts in the area. To that end, the Council is working jointly
with the Canadian National Conservatory of Music to host a
one day music festival with a focus on Christmas music.
Sponsored in part by the Mount Forest Lion's Club, the noncompetitive Festival encourages all ages to participate in
various classes of piano, instrumental and vocal music.
Performances are adjudicated and scholarships are
awarded to promising students.
The Festival will take place Fri., Dec. 2nd, 2016, at Mount
Forest United Church. Deadline for entries will be
November 1st, 2016.
The Mount Forest & District Arts Council welcomes all who
enjoy music and the season, to perform or be part of the
audience.

Have you ever wanted to try curling? Come to the Arthur
Area Curling Club. At the start of every season, the Curling
Club hosts two introductory nights where new curlers can
come and try their hand at curling.
Located at 144 Egremont St. S. and with four sheets of ice,
a spacious lounge and excellent off-ice viewing area it truly
provides a great value for the membership.
Curling activities occur six days a week from late October to
early April:

Association, District #9, we promote safety, well groomed
and marked trails, covering 225kms of diverse countryside.
Permits are available at Post Time, Davenports, Arthur
Home Hardware and Grand Valley Home Hardware.
Monthly meetings are held the first Monday in the months of
November, December, February & April at “Post Time” on
Hwy 6, in Arthur, at 7:30pm.

Giving members access to 600 km of trails locally within the South Grey
Regional Snowmobile Association (SGRSA) and the rest of the trails in the
province. Trails are marked and groomed, single track, and double wide. They
wind through beautiful landscapes of forestry, farm land and riversides as well
as various terrains, for an enjoyable and scenic ride. An ONTARIO
SNOWMOBILE TRAIL PERMIT must be obtained to travel on the trails. Permits

CanSkate is Skate Canada's flagship learn-to-skate program, designed
for beginners of all ages. When you sign up for CanSkate you will be in a
program that focuses on fun, participation and basic skill development.
You will earn badges and other incentives as you learn fundamental
skating skills. Lessons are given in a group format and led by an NCCP
certified professional coach.
We are a non-profit organization, sanctioned by Skate
Canada, that offers programs from Learn to Skate
(PreCan & CanSkate), StarSkate sessions (that can
gear toward recreation, testing, and competitions), Adult
Synchro, Children’s Inro to Synchro, Adult Learn to
Skate & Special Olympics programs.
CanSkate is Canada's only national learn-to-skate program. It was
developed by experts to teach the fundamentals of skating in a
progressive and sequential manner.
STARSkate offers opportunities for skaters of all ages to develop
fundamental figure skating skills in the areas of ice dance, skating skills,
free skate and interpretive skating. Skills, Tests, Achievement,
Recognition – this is what STARSkate is all about! Unique in Canada,
this program teaches figure skating skills in a group and/or private lesson
format in a progressive and sequential manner and includes specifically
designed awards and incentives. Skaters have the opportunity to take
Skate Canada Tests through a nationally standardized testing system.
Skaters who have mastered figure skating skills in STARSkate may also
choose to pursue synchronized skating or pairs skating.

ARTHUR GOJU RYU KARATE DOJO 212 GEORGE ST.
The Arthur Goju Ryu Karate Dojo was opened in September 1997 and is a
member of the Canadian Naha-te Goju Karate Association. The Arthur Dojo
teaches a basic hard-style karate with kung-fu influence. The 45 minute long
classes are held Monday to Thursday as well as Saturday, starting in September
and running until July.

SAUGEEN TRAIL, MOUNT FOREST
ARTHUR TRAILS
This trail begins at Campbell de Vore Park on Princess
St., West of the Mount Forest Sports Complex.
Information signage shows trail route.
There are a variety of landscapes to enjoy along the way
from reforested areas to riverscape along the Saugeen
River.
Follow the trail to Mill St. where you will walk along Martin
St., then follow North Water St. across Highway 6 to the
Wetlands Project, North of Murphy Park. From here you
can follow the trail across Hwy 89 to London St.
River Trail
This walking trail was officially opened on Saturday, Sept.
14th, 2013. The Trail is located at he Arthur Lions Park
on Highway 6, in Arthur. The Trail is 4km in length with
several loops and side trails.
It is open from Dawn to Dusk daily.
West Luther Trail
SKATEBOARD PARK, MOUNT FOREST
This trail was officially opened on Saturday, September
26th, 2015. The trail begins at the North end of Eliza St.,
in Arthur and stretches East approximately 11km, ending
at the East/West Luther Townline.
The Skateboard Park at Campbell de-Vore Park, off Cork
St. & Princess St., was built in 2005. In 2012 new
equipment including ramps, rails, etc. was installed with the
assistance of the Ontario Trillium Foundation.
The unsupervised Community park is open dawn to dusk.
Enquiries about the park should be directed to the Mount
Forest Complex at 519-323-1801.
PARKS/PLAYGROUNDS
Mount Forest and Arthur boast more than 20 acres of parkland from active areas to quiet naturalized areas. Parks are well maintained and picnic tables, washrooms and playground equipment are
available at all major parks. Listed parks include:

Arthur Lions Park (Hwy 6 at the North end of town) was
recently renovated in 2012 with the assistance of the
Ontario Trillium Foundation and the Arthur Lions. Upgrades
to playground equipment include new swings, climbers and
spring toys.
Campbell de-Vore Park (Cork St. & Princess St.) has a small
kitchen preparation area with hydro, hot water and
refrigeration. A covered pavilion is also available with baseball
diamonds and soccer pitches with lighting. Playground
equipment, picnic tables and washrooms are also located
within the park. Call the Wellington North office at 519 848
3620 ext 35 to book the pavilion.
Birmingham St Lions Park (Birmingham St. & Queen
St.) has various playground equipment including swings,
climbers, maypole, etc.
Arthur Opti-Mrs Playground (158 Domville St.) has
various playground equipment including swings, climbers
and spring toys.
Arthur Community Centre Fairgrounds Park (158
Domville St.) has baseball diamonds with lighting,
Optimist Pavilion with kitchen facilities, track area, etc.

Murphy Park (South side of the river, off Murphy St. & Hwy 6)
has a covered picnic shelter, tables & hydro. The volleyball

Lion Roy Grant Pool Park (Main St. & Fergus St.) has
various playground equipment including swings,

King St Fairgrounds Park (320 King St. E.) has Kinsmen
& Optimist baseball diamonds with lights, concession and
track area.
Bill Moody Park (Wellington St. E. & Newfoundland St.)
was officially opened June 1st, 2013. The park contains
playground equipment & a picnic pavilion.

On February 20, 1943 in a cornfield near the village of Paricutin,
Mexico, the ground cracked open and began to spew red-hot rocks. A
volcano was born. It grew to 35 feet the first day. By 1952, it had
soared to 1,352 feet and had buried two towns.

sporting space, our 2 meeting rooms can accommodate
groups up to 660. Community Hall features lofty ceiling height
of 22 feet. Park area includes 2 ball diamonds with a covered
Pavilion in between for outdoor events.
MOUNT FOREST HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY
Meetings, in the basement of the Mount Forest United
Church (175 Queen St.), at 7pm on the 3rd Wednesday of
each month from April to October (excluding July).
All meetings include fabulous speakers, beverage &
snacks, unless there is a pot luck. April & October
meetings begin with a potluck at 6:15pm.
The May, June & August dates include flower shows that
will be judged by accredited OHA judges. Viewing begins at
6:30pm. Cash prizes will be awarded to winners at our
Sept. meeting. At each flower show there is also a
photography competition.

During the September meeting we have our annual "bring a
plant, take a plant home evening."
With over 27,000 square feet of banquet, conference and
sporting space, our 5 meeting rooms can accommodate

diamonds, soccer fields, pavilion and play area.
