Responsible Use of Technology
Today’s world relies heavily on the use of technology. Students use
technology to learn, study, keep track of assignments, organize practice
schedules, and to communicate with their peers. Social media has become a useful technology resource for students to accomplish many of
life’s tasks, but students need to understand that with the use of technology and social media comes great responsibility. They leave a footprint
every time they post online and that digital footprint may be visible to
teachers, administrators, future employers, and college admissions representatives. Students are urged to post and communicate responsibly
when using technology and social media. While First Amendment rights
may protect their freedom of speech, they may not want the type of
speech they use in their teenage years to follow them to their first job
interview or college admissions interview. In addition, posts that cause
a significant disruption at school, regardless of whether they were made
on or off-campus, could result in disciplinary action at the school site.
Many young people who did not think of the repercussions of their
social media posts have already had to deal with these issues. Students
have had their college admission revoked, been denied employment, and
faced disciplinary action as a result of their digital negligence. Today’s
youth must be more careful than ever, as the instantaneous sharing of
information puts them in the public eye every time they post. Students
are reminded to always take some time to think before they post and
text. Assume that anyone could be viewing the message, both now and
in the future, and ask, “Does the message reflect the image I want to
portray to the public?” On August 19, 2015 Park Vista students participated in a school-wide lesson, Electronics and Accountability – A Social
Responsibility. We continue to support the safe use of technology in the
classroom and beyond.

The story of the bricks...
In 2010, a student in the IT Academy came up with an idea to raise money to help students
in all of the PV Academies. She saw that churches, corporations, and schools around
the country were selling personalized engraved bricks. She did some research, scouted
locations, and presented her idea to the Academies Advisory Committee and they loved it!
In 2011 the campaign began, making it possible for anyone to purchase a brick as a
business advertisement, a personal celebration, or a memorial to a loved one. While
many groups sell the same bricks for up to $200 a piece, we kept our price at just $50.
New ones are planted periodically throughout the year and the money raised goes to
scholarships for current students in our Auto Collision, Auto Service Technology, Multimedia
Communications, and Medical Science Academies. Over 600 seniors are eligible to apply for
this money each year!
Caitlin has now graduated college and is living on the west coast of Florida. Her brick and
many others are permanently planted at the front of the school. She made history.
Would you like a brick too?

The NCAA Eligibility Center
Guidance Advising
Counselors met with Seniors the week of 8/31- 9/4 to review graduation requirements and to discuss post-secondary plans. Each senior was given a personal academic history,
a senior checklist, and completed a graduation questionnaire
with the counselor. Senior grades are reviewed after each
report card and, after a meeting with the senior, a letter will
be sent home if a senior is in jeopardy of not graduating.
Student-athletes must register with the NCAA Eligibility
Center to be eligible to play NCAA Division I or II sports
in college. Athletes playing in Division III do not have to
register.

How do students register?
Students must register online at the NCAA Eligibility Center. They will have to enter personal information, answer
questions about their course work and sports participation

How are high school courses classified as core courses?
All participating high schools submit lists of the courses
that they offer that meet NCAA core-course criteria. If approved, the courses are added to a database that the NCAA
Eligibility Center maintains. You can check this database or
view a list of approved core courses on the NCAA Eligibility Center High School Portal to see whether your student-athletes are enrolled in courses that will count toward
NCAA eligibility.
It is often the counselor who provides the NCAA with the
list of your school’s core courses and updates it annually.
The NCAA may ask for more information before approving
a core course.
Can students have the registration fee waived?
Students who have received a waiver for the SAT or ACT
are eligible for a waiver of the registration fee. The student’s
counselor must submit confirmation of the student’s test
fee waiver. Go to the NCAA Eligibility Center High School
Portal for more information.
What records does the Eligibility Center require?
Students should arrange to have their high school transcript
sent as soon as they have completed at least six semesters
of high school. The transcript must be mailed directly from
their high school. They must also arrange to have their SAT
or ACT test scores reported directly by the testing company to the Eligibility Center. Students can arrange this when
they register for the tests. The School responsible for sending in final transcripts and proof of graduation at the end of

What are the NCAA amateurism eligibility requirements?
To play sports at an NCAA Division I or II institution, the
student athlete must follow NCAA amateurism rules about

playing with a professional team and other areas. For more
information, see the Guide for the College-Bound Student-Athlete.
How often can students update their athletics participation information?
Students can update the information on the athletics participation section online as often as they want (and should
update it regularly), up until the time when they request

Dual Enrollment
The dual enrollment program enables qualified students
in the 10th, 11th and 12th grades to enroll in approved
courses offered through Palm Beach State College
(PBSC) and Florida Atlantic University (FAU). The credits students earn count towards both a high school diploma and a college degree. In order to qualify for dual
enrollment courses, students must currently have a 3.0
GPA, have completed 9th grade, and have college-ready
test scores on either the SAT, ACT, CPT, or PERT, and
have attended a Dual Enrollment Advisement Session at
Palm Beach State. Please be aware that dual enrollment
courses become a part of a student’s permanent college transcript and will impact eligibility for financial aid
and admission to other post-secondary institutions. The
amount of work necessary to succeed in college level
courses may be much greater than in high school courses. Students need to consider future plans when deciding
if dual enrollment is right for their situation. An assembly
was held at Park Vista at 8:00 a.m. September 11 for all
students planning to take dual enrollment classes in the
spring term. Students need to see their counselor before
October 5, to receive the necessary paperwork to turn
into the registrar’s office at PBSC before registering online on October 12. For more information, view the Dual
