East Point
On the north bank of the Columbia River lies the
historic community of Stevenson, Washington. A
scenic walk along the waterfront allows visitors to
enjoy a view of the Cascade Mountains and take in
the action on the river. East Point is a great spot to
view kiteboarders, and there is a boat dock along
with a picnic and day-use area. Downriver, next to
the Columbia Riverside Lodge, is Bob’s Beach, a
popular spot for windsurfers, with a grassy area for
a picnic on a warm summer day.
As Skamania County’s seat of government and
home to Skamania Lodge and Columbia Gorge
Interpretive Center, Stevenson strives to keep visitors
busy with activities and events throughout the year.
With an award winning brew pub, art galleries,
antique shops, fine restaurants, distinctive clothing
and jewelry stores, along with a stylish coffee bar, one
can only delight in discovering this welcome respite
from the big city. Free public Wi-Fi can be found in the
downtown core, allowing travelers to surf the web at
many locations between the Columbia River beaches
and the Skamania County courthouse. Popular events
such as the Bridge of the Gods Kiteboarding Festival,
Brews, Blues and BBQ, Bluegrass Festival and the
Outrigger Canoe Races bring crowds to Stevenson
every year, providing fun for the whole family.

Carson, Washington is the gateway to the Gifford
Pinchot National Forest, Old Man’s Pass and Mount St.
Helens. Wind River Highway runs directly through
Carson leading to world class fishing, hunting, hiking,
mountain biking, berry and mushroom picking,
sledding, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling and
beautiful scenery. This small unincorporated town is
also known for the Carson Mineral Hot Springs
Resort, an historical landmark since 1897, which
includes 28 rooms and mineral spring baths.
Currently scheduled to open in 2007, the resort will
feature a new 18-hole golf course and an additional
39 room hotel. Carson retains much of its history via
architecture as many of the original buildings are
still standing. Coffee shops, cafés and unique lodging
facilities are found in this sleepy little town, which is
the perfect “base” from which to experience the
many recreational opportunities found in the region.

Home Valley
Columbia River Fishing
Home Valley, Washington, is at the confluence of the
Columbia and Wind Rivers. Popular ball fields, picnic
area, sandy swimming beach and playground are all
found at the county park on the riverfront. Two RV
parks, a motel and mini-mart are conveniently located
next to some of the best fishing in the world. The boat
launch in Home Valley is located at the mouth of the
Wind River, which leads boaters to the Columbia River,
famous for its spring Chinook and fall steelhead.

Summer on the Wind River
Mill A, Willard and Cook
Northwoods
Mill A and the neighboring communities of Willard
and Cook, Washington are located in the eastern side
of Skamania County. Quite rural and remote, these
are small, unincorporated communities so business
and housing growth is limited. Willard was home to
Broughton Lumber Flume, a nine-mile-long, 1000foot-drop, wooden lumber slide. For decades the
Broughton Lumber Co. timbered in the mountains,
sending their logs to the riverside mill. The mill has
been closed for several years, and the old flume is
slowly rotting away but can still be seen from Highway
14. The 1967 TV episode of Lassie made the flume
famous as the popular collie floated down the chute to
the Broughton Lumber mill. The small community of
Cook, Washington, is located just west (downstream)
of the mouth of the Little White Salmon River and is
home to the Little White Salmon National Fish
Hatchery. Mill A boasts a public school that houses 77
students, grades K-8.
Heading west along the Swift Reservoir on Forest
Road 90 in Skamania County, travelers will find the
tiny community of Northwoods, Washington. Located
on the southeast side of Mount St. Helens National
Volcanic Monument, this mountain community is
considered the “last outpost” on your way to Mount St.
Helens. The Eagle Cliff General Store is your stop for
gas, a broad range of goods, including beer and wine,
food and supplies, lodging, cross country ski rentals
and even a laundromat. Summertime in Northwoods
along Swift Reservoir offers many possibilities. This
13-mile-long reservoir has wonderful waterskiing
coves, great fishing, and lots of room for fun and
exploration. Surrounded by the beauty of Mount St.
Helens and National Forest land, the area attracts
hikers, bikers, boaters, fishermen (and women) and

Where is the Gorge?
E
very year visitors arrive in Skamania County asking, “Where is the
Gorge?” Some people think there is a “gorge” which they can hike through
or drive to, not realizing they are in the Gorge.
Up to 4,000 feet deep, the Columbia River Gorge stretches for more
than 80 miles as the Columbia River winds westward through the Cascade
Range, forming the boundary between the State of Washington to the
north and Oregon to the south. The Columbia River basin is North
America’s fourth largest, draining about 250,000 square miles and extending
throughout the Pacific Northwest and into Canada. There are more than
250 reservoirs and some 150 hydroelectric projects in the basin, including
18 mainstem dams on the Columbia River and its main tributary, the
Snake River.
The Columbia River Gorge is a source of phenomenal beauty and
enjoyment, providing a playground for just about every kind of recreation.
The river’s canyon-like walls create a natural wind tunnel, making ideal
conditions for windsurfing, kiteboarding and sailing. The Gorge also contains
the greatest concentration of waterfalls in the
Pacific Northwest, with more than 75 on the
Oregon side of the Gorge alone. Many are
along the Columbia River Highway, including
the notable Multnomah Falls, which, at 620
feet, is often claimed to be the second tallest
year-round waterfall in the United States. A
visit to the area is not complete without exploring
one of the many breathtaking waterfalls. For a
list of waterfalls in Skamania County log on to
www.skamania.org.
‘
You can spend years exploring
all that the Columbia River Gorge
has to offer, from recreation
to community history and
natural wonders.
‘
In 1986 a group of hikers and outdoor
enthusiasts organized a campaign to preserve
the Columbia River Gorge’s scenic beauty by
successfully encouraging Congress to pass the
Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area
Act. The purpose of the act is to protect and
provide for the enhancement of the scenic,
cultural, recreational and natural resources of
the Gorge, and to protect and support the
economy of the Gorge by encouraging growth
to occur in existing areas and by allowing
future economic development outside these
areas if it is compatible with Gorge resources.

GIFFORD PINCHOT
L
Mt. Adams
ocated in Southwest Washington, Skamania County covers more than 1,000,000
acres of spectacular, diverse country. Eighty percent of Skamania County is home to
the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. The county’s southern border is defined by the
Columbia River and the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area. The northern
territory is dominated by Mount St. Helens in the west, and the base of Mt. Adams
to the east.
The Gifford Pinchot National Forest offers an array of recreational opportunities;
hiking, mountain biking, hunting, camping, fishing, mushroom and berry picking, winter
recreation and more. Within the forest lie Trapper Creek and Indian Heaven
Wilderness, the Pacific Crest Trail, lakes, waterfalls and mountain rivers.
Trapper Creek Wilderness is 6,050 acres of forested solitude. The lower elevations
of the wilderness area are characterized by stands of old growth Douglas fir, with fireregenerated second growth Douglas fir at higher levels. Huckleberry fields can be
found at higher elevations near Observation Peak.
Indian Heaven Wilderness totals some 16,000 acres near Mt. Adams, with numerous
meadows, forested areas and more than 150 lakes. Many of the lakes are stocked with
trout for anglers. The Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail (PCT), which stretches from
Mexico to Canada, crosses Indian Heaven Wilderness (running south to north) for 16.4
miles, with several side trails providing access to larger lakes.
Mt. Adams rises to 12,326 feet and is the second highest peak in Washington State
after Mt. Rainer. Mt Adams is in a remote wilderness area 35 miles east of Mount St.
Helens.
Mount St. Helens stood 9,677 feet before the May 18, 1980 eruption that blew
2,000 feet off the top of the volcano, reducing the elevation to 8,364 feet. The debris
and ash flows that followed caused extensive damage to local communities and
downed thousands of acres of forest. Winds reached 670 miles per hour and carried
temperatures of 800 degrees Fahrenheit. Fifty-seven people were killed. Over the past
200 years there have been only three periods of eruptive activity on this grand
volcanic peak; 1800-1857, 1980-1986 and just recently in 2004-2006. In late
September 2004, after 18 years of relative quiet, hundreds of earthquakes signaled
Mount St. Helens’ reawakening. During 2005, the volcano erupted more than 90 million
cubic yards of new lava, forming seven massive rock piles on the south crater floor.

Highway 14 West Loop
Running beside the Columbia River through the
entire county, State Route 14 is a Scenic Byway known
as the Lewis and Clark Trail. Although it stretches from
the Idaho border to the Pacific Ocean, the route’s 47mile traverse through Skamania County is often called
its most scenic section. The highway crosses the
Cascade Mountains near sea level, allowing year-round
transit and easy access to four seasons of outdoor
beauty and activity.
Starting your trip from Stevenson, Washington, you
will head west passing the Historical Marker Ashes
Lake on your right. On your left you will see the Bridge
of the Gods. The bridge plays a major role in the Pacific
Crest Trail by linking Oregon and Washington states.
Continue west on Hwy 14 and visit the National Historic
Landmark, Bonneville Lock and
Dam (MP 40).
Hamilton Island and Fort Cascades Historic Site are
both located on the south side on the Columbia River
with Bonneville Hot Springs Resort and Spa to the
north. The City of North Bonneville is a good rest stop
offering gas and a convenience store. The town offers
a park like setting with 10 miles of walking/biking
trails.
Located three miles west of Bonneville Lock and
Dam, make sure to stop at Beacon Rock (MP 35) which
is the exposed core of an ancient volcano standing
more than 800 feet above the mighty Columbia
River. The rock is the largest geologic formation of its
kind in the nation. Hike to the top for an impressive
view where you can see for hundreds of miles in all
directions. Beacon Rock State Park offers camping,
picnicking and hiking.
Continue on Highway 14 and you will find the small
community of Skamania which is home to the historical
Skamania General Store offering gas, food, snacks,
maps and friendly locals. Located west of
Skamania, Franz Lake National Wildlife Refuge is a
true wildlife sanctuary where wildlife and plants
remain undisturbed by human activity. St. Cloud
Day Use Area is located at MP 30 for a rest stop and
picnic. Continue and turn right on State Rd. 140
near Prindle. SR 140 will turn into Washougal River
Road where you will approach the Skamania
Steelhead Fish Hatchery. Farther up the road, you
can visit the Washougal Salmon Hatchery. Dougan
Creek Campground is a good stop for a rest, maybe
a picnic and a view of Dougan Falls.
You will have to back track towards the Skamania
Steelhead Fish Hatchery to turn onto Salmon Falls
Road which will lead you back to Hwy. 14. Once you
hit Hwy. 14 you will head east back to Stevenson or
west to Washougal or Vancouver.

Columbia River Gorge/Wineries
With 19 tasting rooms and wineries, one cider
house, and more in the works, the Columbia River
Gorge is a great place to spend a day to visit the
many wineries, offering a scenic drive tour in itself.
For more details about the many wineries go to
www.columbiagorgewine.com.
A great way to see the central and eastern
Columbia Gorge is to travel east from Stevenson
on Hwy 14. You will pass Wind Mt. and Dog Mt.
before approaching Drano Lake, a popular fishing
lake for salmon and steelhead. The Spring Creek
National Fish Hatchery is located on Hwy 14 just
after completing your drive through the many tunnels.
Not only can you learn about the local salmon, the
entrance to the hatchery also offers great close up
views of windsurfers.
Bingen, Washington is your first town with full services
boasting a first class pizzeria, two wineries and a cider
house. You can take a side trip and venture up the hill
to White Salmon, home to three more wineries.
Back on Hwy 14, you will pass the small town of
Wishram which boasts a riverfront winery with spectacular
scenery. Continue on Hwy 14, passing through the
small town of Lyle which is home to two wineries. To
reach Maryhill Winery, continue 14 miles past the town
of Lyle along Hwy 14. Open since 2003, Maryhill Winery
proudly presents a 4,000 seat amphitheater, picnicking
on a spacious and scenic covered arbor, a self-service
deli and award-winning wines. Check out their website
at: www.maryhillwinery.com.
You can also visit Maryhill Museum and Maryhill
State Park. The full-scale partial replica of England’s
famous Stonehenge is one mile from the state park.
Cross the bridge to Oregon and head west on I-84
where you can stop in The Dalles where there are three
wineries. The small town of Mosier boasts two wineries
Big Lava Bed Drive
There are many wonderful loop drives throughout
the area, but one which will give you a real feel for the
back country is called the Big Lava Bed Drive.
You can start at either end, but we will take you
from Carson. Go north on Wind River Highway
through Carson to the junction of Hemlock Road in
Stabler. Continue north on Wind River Highway and
take the next road to the right, Warren Gap Road.
This is a gravel road, and it connects with the paved,
but single lane Panther Creek Road (also known as
the 65 Road on some maps). Make a left on Panther
Creek Road and stay on the main track until you reach
what is unofficially known as “four corners.” This is a
symmetrical cross roads of four gravel roads. Take the
road to the right, marked on the map as the 60 Road.
This road will take you to Goose Lake over the Pacific
Crest Trail and along the top of the Big Lava Bed.
If you should find an irresistible desire to go exploring
in the Big Lava Bed, we recommend that you use the
and don’t forget to look for Mt. Hood as you stop by
Hood River, Oregon which offers six wineries.
You finish your loop by traveling on I-84 west and
taking the Cascade Locks exit and then crossing the
Bridge of the Gods, bringing you back to Stevenson,
Washington.
Pacific Crest Trail to do so, staying on the trail. The Big
Lava Bed has proven, over the years, to be a navigation
hazard for most folks. Some say it’s haunted and others
maintain that there is a magnetic disturbance, which
whacks out GPS units and compasses. For sure, there is no
cell service and some of the terrain is like a leg breaking
moonscape. It is very interesting and safely seen from
the trail.
Back to your car, after you stop for a spell at Goose
Lake, take the next main track to the south, or the 66
Road, sometimes also known as the South Prairie
Road. This road follows the eastern edge of the Big
Lava Bed, and in autumn, is one of the most brilliant
fall color drives. When you come to an intersection with
Oklahoma Road, make a right turn and head into
Willard. From Willard, you can return to the Columbia
River by going through Mill-A (a right turn), or by turning
left on Underwood Road and going along the high ridge
above the Columbia River and dropping down to the
mouth of the White Salmon River. Either way is scenic.

Winter
Activities
W
inter recreation in
Skamania County is one
of the Columbia Gorge’s
best-kept secrets.
Snowmobiling, cross-country skiing
and snowshoeing can all be readily
accessed at local snow parks. For the more
adventuresome, back-country skiing on the flanks
of Mount St. Helens and Mt. Adams challenge
even the hardiest of mountaineers.
The Wind River Sports Area, only 30 minutes
north of Carson, provides groomed snowmobile
and cross country trails covering beautiful terrain
with views of the Cascade Mountain range. The
Old Man’s Pass area offers some of the best hills
around for family friendly tubing, sledding and
tobogganing. When the snow level drops to the
2,000-foot level, visitors can take a drive to
Government Mineral Springs for snow touring in
the Trapper Creek Wilderness. Mineral water
from “Iron Mike” makes it a popular watering
hole for thirsty adventurers. Atkisson Sno-Park
is located near Mt. Adams, not far from the
community of Trout Lake in the eastern part of
Skamania County.
28
www.skamania.org
Sno-Park permits are required and available at
local stores and the Chamber of Commerce. The
Outdoor Toy Store in Carson rents snowmobiles
and is located directly on the Wind River Highway,
on the way to the Wind River Sports Area.
If downhill skiing is your passion, Mt. Hood in
Oregon offers four resorts to choose from. When
road conditions are good, the drive from
Stevenson is just over an hour.
Keep in mind that when the weather along the
river is mild, there can be a winter wonderland just
30 miles away. Always be prepared by carrying tire
chains, extra clothing, food and water.
When the snow melts, the following areas are
popular for summer hiking and mountain biking,
as well as popular back-road touring for motorist
and motorcyclist. The roads lead to berry and
mushroom picking, waterfalls and volcanic
mountain peaks.
GETTING THERE:
Mt. Adams Winter Recreation Area:
Access Mt. Adams Sno-Parks via Highway
141, north off of Highway 14, fourteen miles
from Stevenson. To reach Atkisson SnoPark, follow 141 past the Ranger Station
approximately five miles. The Sno-Park
entrance is on the south side of the road,
just within the Forest boundary. Flat Top
Sno-Park is farther north from Atkisson.
Wind River Winter Recreation Area:
Access the Wind River Sno-Parks via the
Wind River Highway (Hwy 30) north of
Carson about 30 miles. After you pass the
Carson Fish Hatchery, you will see a sign for
the recreation area that points to your right.
Follow the road to the parking area at the top
of the pass.

One of the most interesting spectator sports since
chariot races, Stevenson, Washington is home to one of
the most popular kiteboarding sites in the Gorge. Watch
the kiteboarders launch 20, 30, 40 feet into the air at
Stevenson’s Kite Beach on the east end of town.
Windsurfing
The Gorge is the windsurfing capital of the world. Did
you know you’ll find the most famous windsurfing site plus
a few more user friendly launches in Skamania County,
Washington? The most famous
site, at Spring Creek Fish
Hatchery, known to “boardheads” as “The Hatchery,” is on
Hwy. 14 only four miles west of
the Hood River Bridge. Sailors
can also launch from Home

Fishing
Skamania County provides a limitless number of fishing
opportunities for the experienced to the beginning angler.
The vast Columbia River, mountain streams, wilderness
lakes, reservoirs and ponds make Skamania County a year
‘round fisherman’s paradise. There are five public boat
launches on the Columbia with two recently remodeled.
While salmon, steelhead and sturgeon seem to be the
highly prized fish in the Columbia River, walleye, shad,
small mouth bass and trout are also abundant in the many
lakes and streams.

An underwater viewing area and wildlife viewing
opportunities at the hatchery make this a favorite for
visitors year round. Chinook and coho can be seen
