WORKSHOPS
Since 1783 the Shakers have been forerunners of herbal medicines and
herbal products, including rose water, peach water and mint water,
which were prepared and sold to the ‘world.’ The tradition continues
today and supplies widespread holistic culinary and gourmet interests.
Join Botanist and Shaker Village’s herbalist Betsey-Ann Golon for a
series of herbal workshops featuring the Shakers’ long-standing herbal
traditions. Betsey-Ann manages the Shakers’ herb gardens and garden
internship program and she also lectures nationally on a variety of
topics, ranging from planting and growing herbs, to creating herbal
products, tinctures, and recipes. She regularly consults at renowned
historic sites in the eastern United States, including several Shaker
Museums, and George Washington’s Mount Vernon estate.

Shakers’ historic gardens, participants will create
herbal tea blends that they may take away and
they will also create, from herbs harvested in the
Shakers’ herb gardens, a “living” tea wreath,
which can be cut and used over a two week period. Herbs make wonderful beverages when used
fresh, and participants will make and enjoy a bounty from the Shaker Garden!

In 1882, the Shaker Library
was established by Elder Otis Sawyer (1815-1884) as
a repository with 191 records of the most important
of the Shakers’ publications, pamphlets and other
materials that illustrated valuable aspects of Shaker
