The Shakers are among the best-known craftspeople in American history; our legacy includes fine examples of woodworking, textile arts, basket making, metal work, music, gardening, cooking, and more. Today, we, the Sabbathday Lake Shakers, America’s only active Shaker Community, are the stewards of this heritage. We gladly welcome visitors to Shaker Village to experience our traditions. We are pleased to feature Shakerinspired workshops, craft demonstrations, concerts, and special events by some of Maine’s best-known instructors and artists. On at least one Saturday each month we have combined multiple workshops and other events in order to satisfy the interests & curiosity of your family and friends. Make a day of it! Join Botanist and Shaker Village’s herbalist Betsey-Ann Golon for a series of herbal workshops featuring the Shakers’ long-standing herbal traditions. Betsey-Ann manages the Shakers’ herb gardens and garden internship program and she also lectures nationally on a variety of topics, ranging from planting and growing herbs, to creating herbal products, tinctures, and recipes. She regularly consults at renowned historic sites in the eastern United States, including several Shaker Museums, and George Washington’s Mount Vernon estate. Herb Garden Design Saturday, June 6th from 10am – 12pm. NEW! $40. In the early 1800s, the Shakers managed extensive terraced gardens that extended from the Village down to the shores of Sabbathday Lake. Crops were matched to the most suitable and ideal conditions. Learn the time-tested cultivation, harvest, and use of popular culinary and medicinal herbs while planning the custom-design of your own herb garden. Participants will learn about color, texture, height, companion planting, and soil composition. Herbal Teas & Fresh Herb Wreath Saturday, June 27 th from 10am – 2pm. NEW! $50. The Shakers marketed herbal products as early as 1799, launching an herb business that has endured for 216 years. Using herbs grown in the Shakers’ historic gardens, participants will create herbal tea blends that they may take away and they will also create, from herbs harvested in the Shakers’ herb gardens, a “living” tea wreath, which can be cut and used over a two week period. Herbs make wonderful beverages when used fresh, and participants will make and enjoy a bounty from the Shaker Garden! 2 “Green” Cleaning Products Saturday, July 25 th from 10am – 2pm. NEW! Throughout the 1800s, Shaker Sisters kept recipe books to make useful household products, many from natural ingredients. Participants in this workshop will make and take home several herbal cleaning products made from allnatural ingredients that are commonly found in the household. Clean and sanitize your home with satisfying, affordable, eco-friendly products that are safe for your family and pets. Learn to make great products at a fraction of the price for your home and as great gifts! Harvest Wreath Crafting Saturday, October 10th from 10am – 4pm. WOODWORKING $50. NEW! $45. Celebrate the Fall Festival at Shaker Village with us! Participants will create a wreath or a swag from herbs and flowers harvested from the Shakers’ historic gardens, under cultivation since 1783. Craft a treasured heirloom that will be the centerpiece of your decorations for the Fall Season and Thanksgiving. Participants will learn how to develop a design using color, texture and balance. WORKSHOPS Dovetails Dovetail joints are classic characteristics of many examples of Shaker furniture from the 19th century. Internationally-known woodworker Chris Becksvoort will share his life-long expertise and techniques as a master cabinetmaker and scholar of Shaker furniture. Participants will learn proper layout procedures and methods for marking, sawing, chiseling, and fitting dovetails. Emphasis is on technique and precision. This class is designed for the beginner woodworker and those with advanced woodworking experience. Please bring: pencil, 12” ruler, utili- ty knife, square, marking gauge, T-bevel or dovetail marker , mallet, dovetail saw and chisels – ¼”, 3/8”, and ¾”. PLEASE choose either morning session 9am-12noon or afternoon session 1pm-4pm. Class size: 8 per session. Beginner’s Woodcarving: Sheep Shakers’ Herb Garden Internship FREE! $50. Spanning a 200-year practice, a flock of sheep remains a vital part of the Shakers Farm and daily routine. Join local, award-winning, master-carver Norm Devonshire for the basics of carving, including proper use of the knife, types of cuts, methods and techniques, and sharpening. All participants will complete their own finished carving of a Shaker sheep and leave with the skill set to begin a new hobby of woodcarving. For ages 14 and up. Betsey-Ann Golon will lead a seasonlong, hands-on experience for those interested in learning more about the care, harvest, and uses of more than 16 important herbs grown at Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village. Participants are welcome on Tuesdays and/or Thursdays. The daily schedule will consist of work in the gardens from 9am until 12noon, a lunch break on the historic 1901 Girls’ Shop porch, and then an afternoon program in the herb gardens or in the Shakers’ Herb Department. Shaker Elder Frederick Evans said ‘that which possesses the greatest utility, has the greatest beauty.’ This simple, 14” tall, pine bench with half-moon cutout legs, inspired from an original Shaker design, promises to be as functional as it is beautiful. Internationally renowned, local Master cabinetmaker Chris Becksvoort will teach the techniques required for the interlocking dovetailed braces and wedged mortise-and-tenon joints on this bench. Each participant will complete construction of their own bench, awaiting the finish of their choice. Please bring a square, knife, marking gauge, dovetail saw, ¾” chisel and a mallet. Class size: 8. Beginner’s Carving: Old Sea “Salt” Saturday, August 15th at 9am — 4pm NEW! Saturday, September 19th at 9am — 4pm NEW! $100. From large cupboards to small boxes, the Shakers are known for their sense of design, attention to detail, and orderliness. Join internationally -known, master cabinetmaker Chris Becksvoort for this Shaker classic. Based on the original piece made by the Mount Lebanon Shakers around the year 1840, attendees will build a white pine Shaker carrier with center handle, four dovetailed corners and a quarter sawn bottom. This is a very useful carrier for tableware, mail and bills, or to organize small items around the house and shop. The Dovetail Workshop is a prerequisite for this course, either morning or afternoon of July 25th, or previous years. Materials will be provided. Please bring: pencil, ruler, marking gauge, knife, dovetail marker or T-bevel, square, 1/4”, 3/8”, 1/2” & 3/4” chisel, mallet, dovetail saw and spokeshave. Class size: 8 $50. As a young boy 4 years of age in 1855, orphaned William Dumont was indentured as a cabin boy on a sailing vessel out of Portsmouth, NH. Fifteen years of his early life were spent among fishermen, sailors, and merchants before he came ashore to begin his life among the Sabbathday Lake Shakers in 1870. Elder William remains among the Shakers’ most beloved leaders. Join local, award-winning, mastercarver Norm Devonshire for the basics of carving, including proper use of the knife, types of cuts, methods and techniques, and sharpening. Participants will complete their own finished carving of a New England fisherman and leave with the skill set to begin a new hobby. No previous woodcarving experience necessary. Ages 14 and up. Beginner’s Woodcarving: Colt Saturday, September 19th at 9am — 4pm Home & Craft WORKSHOPS Chair Caning Saturday, June 6th from 9am – 4pm The finest chairs produced by the Enfield Shakers in NH were a mid-19th century example with cane seats. Instructor Bill Ambrose, owner of Walnut Hill Antique Chair Restoration, will teach the 7 steps of chair caning and he will provide all the supplies you need to re-seat your chair. Restore a favorite or an antique chair at a fraction of the cost. Participants need to bring their own clean, sound chair with a missing hand-woven cane seat. The chair can be identified by the holes that are drilled through the chair seat frame. Bill will be available the following Saturday June 13th, 9am12noon for a follow-up session. Many of these animals raised from birth were beloved family pets to the Shakers. Join local, awardwinning, master-carver Norm Devonshire for the basics of carving, including proper use of the knife, types of cuts, methods and techniques, and sharpening. All participants will complete their own finished carving of a colt and leave with the skill set to begin a new hobby of woodcarving. No prior experience necessary. Ages 14 and up. Carving knives will be furnished for use, and for sale at additional cost. Class size: 6. 5 $75. 6 Fancy Basket: Watercolor Paper Saturday, June 6th at 9am — 4pm NEW! $60. Starting in the late 1800s during the Gilded Age of Tourism, the Shakers made fancy baskets from combinations of ash splint, strips of poplar, sweetgrass, and even strands of horse hair. Participants in this class will create a useful and folky basket from hand-painted, high-quality artist watercolor paper. Students will watch instructor Carolyn Kemp demonstrate some of her painting techniques and listen to a brief description of how to weave paper successfully. Participants will receive a "ready to weave" kit of prepainted artists watercolor paper along with written instructions and enough time to finish the basket in class. Participants will gain the basic skills and knowledge to experiment on their own with other creative basket and gift ideas. No prior experience is necessary to weave this basket. Class size: 6 Beginner’s Rug Hooking Saturday, June 27th at 9am — 4pm NEW! $65. Sister Eliza Jeffers (1868-1955) produced a number of hooked rugs at the Alfred and Sabbathday Lake Shaker Villages. Join Beth Miller of Parris House Wool Works for a fun day of learning this heritage North American craft. Participants will hook a small rectangular Shaker-inspired design pillow front for a small buckwheat & lavenderfilled, soothing aromatic pillow. The classic rug binding stitch will be taught and used as the finishing stitch to assemble the pillow. All materials are included and hooking frames will be available to borrow for the day or to purchase after class. Please bring a small pair of scissors - embroidery scissors are perfect. [email protected] 7 Cherokee-Style Storage Basket Saturday, June 27th at 9am — 4pm NEW! $75. For more than 150 years, the Shakers produced a wide variety of distinctive utility baskets for home use and exquisitely fine fancy baskets for sale to the world. Instructor Pat Libby is a skilled basketmaker and well -versed in Shaker history. Each participant will weave their own basket using natural reed. This basket weaves up fast and is the perfect size for a variety of uses around your home. All materials, tools, and supplies included in fee. Super for beginners and beyond. Class size: 10. Birch Bark Basket Necklace th Saturday, July 25 at 9am — 4pm NEW! $65. The Shakers’ crafts and artwork have been influenced through time by the natural world, the locally available raw materials, and, at times, crafts produced by nearby Native Americans. Local artist and basketmaker Carolyn Kemp will instruct participants to make a charming birch bark necklace basket from bark harvested from Shaker Village. Previous basketmaking experience will be useful and this class is designed for anyone interested in fine, intricate projects. Class size is limited to 4 participants to ensure that each student will be given lots of attention and the project will be finished in class. Class size: 4 Amish-Style Double-Sided Pillow th Saturday, July 25 at 9am — 4pm NEW! $70. Sabbathday Lake’s Eldress Prudence Stickney (18601950) and Sister Ada Cummings (1862-1926) were two highly-skilled Shaker quilters. Local, expert seamstress and quilter Dianne Devonshire will teach the basics of quilting, including precisely matched corners, angles, and seams. Participants will complete an attractive double-sided pillow based upon a traditional Amish flower design and leave with the skills to continue quilting. This is an excellent class for beginners, and new quilters. Class open to those with basic sewing machine experience threading, winding a bobbin, etc. Ages 12 and up. All fabric included along with a pillow insert. Participants need to bring a sewing machine and a pair of scissors (a limited number of sewing machines is available for participants without one— please inquire for details) . Class size: 8. 8 Cold-Process Soap Making th NEW! $55. Saturday, July 25 at 9am — 4pm Throughout the 1800s, the Shakers made large batches of household soap in a large vat in the Soap Room, adjacent to the Community’s Wash Room in the 1821 Sisters’ Shop. Join Bill and Beth Miller of Parris House Wool Works to learn an easy, all natural cold process bath bar recipe. Students will be provided with all of the materials necessary, including a soap mold, to make a 2-pound loaf of cold process soap, which will produce up to 8 bath-size bars. A variety of essential oils will be used to scent batches and dried herbs and flowers from the Shakers’ historic herb gardens will be used for decoration to make lavender soap and citrus lemon verbena with calendula soap. Directions for cutting, curing, and testing the soap at home will be included. Class size: 10. Christmas Table Runner th NEW! Saturday, August 15 at 9am — 4pm $60. The Shakers are renowned for their basket-making practices, having produced hundreds of utility baskets throughout the 1800s. Join local artist and basketmaker Carolyn Kemp for this exciting contemporary twist on a classic basket design. Participants will complete a traditional market basket from space dyed reed that has beautiful, jewel-like subtle transitions of hand-dyed color. All materials will be customcreated for this class and provided to participants. No prior experience necessary. Class size: 8. Shaker-Style Seat Weaving Saturday, August 15th at 9am — 4pm $50. For more than 200 years, the Shakers have seated their chairs and stools with woven cloth tape – a classic Shaker feature that is colorful, comfortable, and durable. Local instructor and Shaker enthusiast Sandy MacDonald will explain the history of Shaker chairs using original, historic examples along with contemporary replicas. Learn the methods, tips, and techniques to weaving Shaker chair and stool seat patterns. Restore your favorite chair or stool in classic style. Chair or stool must have rounded seat rails. Sabbathday Lake’s Brother Delmer Wilson (1873-1961) launched his photography hobby in 1898 with glass plate negatives and using all types film through his life, including color Polaroid! Join New Gloucester photographer Vicki Lund in this photography workshop designed to familiarize participants with how to create a great shot using the features of their digital cameras. Vicki will teach image composition, use of light, and basic Photoshop digital enhancement. Bring your digital camera, a fresh battery, SD card, and your user’s manual. Class size: 12. 10 Natural Dyes for Wool th NEW! $80. Saturday, September 19 at 10am — 3pm One of the earliest industries of the Sabbathday Lake Shaker Sisters was textile production. The Sisters produced large numbers of wool blankets and other textiles with bold stripes and twill patterns created from natural dyes. Marty Elkin of A Wrinkle in Thyme Farm will take you through a full day of learning to dye with plants from her dyers’ garden as well as from plants you will gather from the Shakers’ garden. Plants may include marigolds, onion skins, black eyed susans, jewel weed, goldenrod, amarynth, and indigo. You will leave with 7 10-gram sample skeins of each color. Bring or purchase a 2oz skein for a community pot. Class size: 6. Wool Applique and Embroidery Saturday, September 19th at 9am — 4pm NEW! $65. Every Shaker girl was taught a variety of types of hand stitching, skills which they mastered by the time they were young adults. Local instructor and fiber artist Mary DeLano will teach you to applique a piece specially designed for the Shaker Village that features a likeness of the Shaker Meeting House. You will learn how to transfer a pattern, applique the wool pieces to a wool background, and embellish your project with at least four different embroidery stitches using a variety of threads. After completing this class, you will be able to tackle confidently many “penny rug” and wool applique patterns and embellish them with flourishes to make them unique. Class size: 8 About Workshop Fees. WORKSHOPS Nature’s Outdoor Classroom: Shaker Village. The mysteries of the Maine woods will be explored and revealed during this 2hour guided hike through the Shakers’ land. Learn about the indigenous species of birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, fish, plants, trees, and fungi that occupy the many, diverse habitats of Shaker Village. See evidence of glacial and geological forces that formed the land and watershed, including Sabbathday Lake from Loon’s Point and the hidden treasure of Aurelia’s Cascade. The hike through hayfields, forest land, and century-old logging trails will include insights to the Shakers’ 200 years of land use and management. This program is designed for families, young and old, and promises a fun and memorable experience in the Maine woods. Dress for the weather and wear appropriate footwear for a 3-mile, moderate walk. Bug repellent and sunscreen recommended. Bring your camera, binoculars and bottled water. Your support counts! 11 Combine this outdoor classroom habitat-experience with a trip to the nearby Maine Wildlife Park, home of Maine’s most popular animals. 12 Bird Watching at the Shaker Bog. Trained naturalist and birdwatcher Carol Beyna will lead groups to the fascinating habitats of the Shaker Bog. The bog was originally built by the Shakers in 1816 as a reservoir to power their mills, but today, this 150-acre wetland has become a diverse ecosystem; the feeding ground of moose, the home of beaver, mink, fischer, fox and an occasional black bear. The combination of woodland and wetland provides an ideal habitat for a wide variety of songbirds, game fowl, woodpeckers and more. Learn to beckon chickadees, nuthatches and other small birds. Possible sighting also include pileated woodpeckers, loons, ducks, Canada geese, and hawks. This program is designed for families, young and old, and promises a fun and memorable experience in the Maine woods. Tour size limited to 12. Shape Note Singing. Saturday, June 6, 1pm-4:30pm FREE Shape notes, a form of musical notation that assigns geometric shapes to note heads, was first introduced in 1801 to simplify community acapella singing. Shape note singers from around New England will gather in the Shakers’ 1794 Meeting House for a truly spectacular “sing” in the Sacred Harp tradition that resonates with power through Shaker Village, hearkening back to earlier times. The public is welcome to join in with the singing. Maine Festival of American Music. Scheduled dates for Bird Watching are: “The Maine Festival of American Music: Its Roots and Traditions” provides a rare opportunity to experience Shaker music and history in the context of the wider world of classical and folk music, while also celebrating American musicians, composers, historians and craftsmen. The Shakers host the festival with all concerts taking place in their 1794 Meeting House, one of Maine’s most beautiful and acoustically superb venues for vocal and instrumental performances. Mushrooms: Mysteries of the Maine Woods Shaker Village is habitat to dozens of varieties of wild mushrooms in all shapes, colors and forms. Trained guide and member of the Maine Mycological Association, Inc. will conduct a foray into the Shaker woods, in search of common and unusual varieties of mushrooms, offering species identification and explanation of their life cycles. Come with your friends and family to explore one of the most curious, intriguing, and oft-misunderstood mysteries of the Maine woods! Please contact us for information. 13 Wednesday, June 24, 7pm: Celebrating Our Music Heritage Matthew Szemela, fusion violinist violist, performs contemporary interpretations of classical composers and incorporates traditional Shaker music through his unique improvisational style. Matt joins the Portland String Quartet in Antonin Dvorak's Quintet Op.97. Tickets $20; Students 21 and under FREE Thursday, June 25, 7pm: Land of Pure Delight Composer Kevin Siegfried leads The Portsmouth Singers in a program of Shaker songs. Through research of original, historic Shaker hymnals, he presents many songs that had previously disappeared from the Shakers’ repertoire along with songs still sung by the Shakers today. Brother Arnold Hadd shares insights about these songs. The Portland String Quartet will perform Siegfried’s "Land of Pure Delight," a composition based exclusively on Shaker songs and dances. Tickets $20; Students 21 and under FREE 14 Friday, June 26, 3:30pm: Learning to Perform The Portland String Quartet coaches student string quartets as they bring scores to life and prepare for a culminating Master Class performance. Participants will perform chamber music selections from the classical era to the modern American repertoire. This student performance is offered FREE OF CHARGE. Friday, June 26, 7pm: Engaging the Spirit of Shaker Music This performance is the culmination of a multi-week workshop led by Chris Moore of 317 Main Community Music Center, in which students will have explored modern folk songwriting inspired by Shaker music in addition to other deep-rooted American folk music traditions. The students will perform their original compositions to demonstrate a musical and spiritual adaptation of Shaker song craft in contemporary expression. The performance will also feature contemporary and traditional songs and instrumentals performed on mandolin and guitar, including Chris' thought-provoking, original songs. The Maine Shape Note Singers will provide instruction and demonstration prior to an open sing-along of songs from the oldest music book in print in the United States, Sacred Harp, along with a selection of early Shaker songs adapted to the Shape Note tradition. This performance is offered FREE OF CHARGE. Saturday, June 27, 7pm: Exploring Our Roots and Dreams The Portland String Quartet continues its 40-year-long history of performing in the Sabbathday Lake Shaker Meeting House. In addition to the Schubert Quartetsatz and Beethoven’s masterpiece Op.59, No.3, “Rasoumofsky," the Portland String Quartet will perform String Quartet No.1, "American Dreams," by Peter Schickele. Well known for his humorous invention of "P.D.Q. Bach," this work demonstrates the composer's gift for legitimate composition while celebrating a full palette of Americana. Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village may be the oldest farm in Maine still operated under the same management, since 1783. Shaker Village, nestled on 1750 acres of land with seventeen historic buildings ranging from the 1780s through the 1950s, is home to the only active Shaker Community in the world and continues to accept new members. Visitors are welcome to join the Shakers for Sunday worship services, beginning promptly at 10am and lasting approximately one-hour. The Shakers keep an active farm with Scottish highland cattle, a flock of sheep, bees, pigs, and many working barn cats. While most of the land is managed forest, the Shakers have a large, 21-acre apple orchard, herb and vegetable gardens, expansive hay fields, and many acres of crop fields under the management of Chipman Farm in Poland, Maine. Shaker Village is listed as a National Historic Landmark and on the National Register of Historic Places. The Shakers had a store, perhaps as early as the 1790s, where they sold commodities and provisions to their hired men and outsiders. Today, the Shaker Store is housed in the 1880 Trustees’ Office, where the Shakers offer a wide selection of Maine-made craft, including woodenware, textiles, and knit goods. Additionally, the Shakers offer a number of specialty items produced at Shaker Village, including jellies, pickles, culinary herbs and herbal teas, herbal vinegars, infused herbal olive oil, old-fashioned biscuit mix, and much more. The Shaker Store is open Memorial Day through Columbus Day Weekend; Monday – Saturday, 10am – 4:30pm. After Columbus Day, the Store is only open on Saturdays until the Shaker Christmas Fair on Dec. 5th. Saturday December 5 Shaker Christmas Fair Holiday fun for the whole family! 10am-3pm Shaker Museum. The Shaker Museum features five historic buildings that explain more than 250 years of Shaker history from their origins into the present day. Hour-long guided tours through period room settings allow visitors to see actual, historic Shaker work rooms and sleeping rooms during different eras. The Shaker Museum is open from Memorial Day through Columbus Day; Monday – Saturday, 10am – 4:30pm. Closed Sundays. 21 22 Shaker Library. In 1882, the Shaker Library was established by Elder Otis Sawyer (1815-1884) as a repository with 191 records of the most important of the Shakers’ publications, pamphlets and other materials that illustrated valuable aspects of Shaker beliefs, lifestyle, and industry. Today, the Shaker Library contains tens of thousands of items from the 18th century into the present day, including printed books by and about the Shakers, handwritten journals and diaries, financial records, letters, song books, addresses and sermons, recipe books, and more. There are also tens of thousands of photographic images, along with postcards, stereoview cards, and cabinet cards; in addition to a large number of product labels, advertising broadsides, catalogs, posters, and other ephemera – all related to the Shakers from the 1700s into the present day. The collection includes a wide variety of materials about other religious sects. The Shaker Library is among the largest research collections devoted to Shaker history in the world. The Shakers have been growing, packaging and selling herbs and herbal products since 1799. These herbs were highly sought after for medicinal uses and others for culinary purposes. Today, the Sabbathday Lake Shakers offer a large selection of culinary herbs and herbal teas packaged in tin canisters similar to those used in the 19th century.
