The bright, intimate space of First Church in Cambridge is the venue for choral
music based on a special connection between stringed instruments and the
human voice. A beautiful Bach motet matches double chorus with violins,
cellos and continuo; Abbie Betinis’s modern setting of 14th century Iranian
poetry features women’s chorus singing in Persian, together with cello, hand
drums, and oud. A lyrical cello accompanies the Russian orthodox funeral
song “Svyati,” harp lifts the transcendent hymn “The Earthly Rose,” solo violin
sets the stage for John MacDonald’s vivid rendering of poems by William
Stafford, and the violin leads Dan Forrest’s beautiful setting of the colonial
folksong “The Nightingale.”

SUN, APRIL 24, 2016 AT 3 PM | SYMPHONY HALL, BOSTON
CONDUCTOR’S TALK, 1:45
With the Boston Philharmonic, Benjamin Zander, Conductor
Dramatic, emotional, blazing with apocalyptic vision, Verdi’s Requiem
unleashes the full power of brass, percussion, orchestra and chorus in
depicting the “day of wrath” at the last judgment. Alternately tender and
defiant, the Requiem emphasizes our human response to the reality of death
and the uncertainty of what lies beyond.
CpM joins the Boston Philharmonic under the direction of Benjamin Zander
to perform this colossal work at Boston’s Symphony Hall. The chorus last
collaborated with the

Spring brings tales of setting forth, going astray, and—
sometimes—coming home. “Spencer the Rover,” for chorus
and British brass band, is based on an English folk ballad
about a man driven to leave home and wander, until loneliness
and a key revelation lead him back to his amazed family.
CpM commissioned the work from Welsh-born, Boston-based
composer Andy Vores. Less fortunate than

Spencer are the wayward Lady Barnard and

her lover in Britten’s popular ballad (for men’s
chorus) of adultery and murder. In the sacred realm, Bach’s
cantata no. 7 commemorates Christ’s baptism in the River
Jordan, the point where he set forth on his ministry. It’s paired

Our 67th season will showcase Chorus pro Musica’s
innovative, eclectic programming in five different venues
in and around Boston. Almost every work is one the
chorus has never performed before, with something for
everyone: Bach cantatas and motets; music for chorus
and a variety of stringed instruments, including solo
violin, cello, harp and oud as well as classical string
ensemble; choral gems by Arvo Pärt, Ēriks Ešenvalds,
John Tavener and Benjamin Britten; a world premiere
by Andy Vores and a dramatic finale with Verdi. We’re
excited about what lies ahead. Come join us!
