History
My mission was founded July 14 by
Father Junipero Serra in 1771. It is five
miles northwest of the community of Jolon
in Monterey.
Fr. Serra knew that this third mission's success
was important to assure that his dream of a
“chain” of mission be realized. Fr. Serra was so
anxious to get this mission underway he hung
a bell from a large oak tree on their very first
day there and vigorously rang it to attract
“All the Gentiles” within earshot.
In 1773, the mission was moved to a site
further north in the Los Robles Valley that
offered a better water supply. The water was
used to turn the first California gristmill,
where wheat was ground into flour.
The San Antonio Mission
The San Jose Mission
By Anthony Moreno
Facts
The San Jose Mission was founded in 1797 by Father
Femin Lasuen. It is located east of a bay in San
Francisco. It was used as a base for military
operations against native Americans. There were
more than 20,000 herd of Cattle. Many battles
happened there. An intense earthquake destroyed it
in 1868. Father Narciso Duran took over it for 27
years. He created a 30 person band that could be
heard miles away from the mission. In the first year,
33 Indians were baptized. Also more than 6,000
baptisms were recorded.
History of the San Jose Mission
After 6 years of founding the 13th mission, Lasuen had
been granted the power to introduce 5 more
missions. They were completed in only 13 months.
The mission San Jose was one of them. The mission
was populated with many Christianized native
Americans. As a result of the earthquake of 1868, it
collapsed. It was replaced with a wooden Gothic
church on the foundation. During 1982 ,it was moved
to a town called Burlingame. In 1985 it was
authentically restored with real adobe bricks and was
made using tools from the era of the original mission.

Santa Ines
by: Ariel Elazar
History
The mission Santa Ines was
founded on September 17,
1804 in San Francisco and
th
was the 19 mission ever built.
Santa Ines is located in the
town of Solvang and is 3 miles
east of U.S.Highway 101.
Name
This mission got its name
from Saint Agnes and is the
last mission founded in
Southern California.
Interesting Facts
After eight years of building nonstop,
Santa Ines was finished. In 1812 there was a
great earthquake that hit the church and
other buildings ruining the mission. Luckily,
they were able to rebuild the
mission in 1817.
More Interesting Facts
In 1834, the padres were forced to share
the building with the Mexican settlers. The
padres were very upset to hear that
news, so many of them
left the mission. Luckily, (for the padres)
in 1843 they got complete control
over the mission.
Even More Interesting Facts
The mission building was not cared for
properly so they soon fell in disrepair.
However, they spent the next 20 years
rebuilding it.

San Buenaventura Mission
by Austin Teague
Interesting Facts
The San Buenaventura mission was founded on March
31, 1782 by Father Junipero Serra.
San Bunaventura mission was the ninth mission he
built.
Mission San Buenaventura grew crops like sugar cane,
bananas, coconuts and figs.
The earthquake of 1812 severely damaged the church
but it was quickly reinforced.
It was originally planned to be the third mission in the
California chain.
History
The first Buenaventura
mission was burnt down, but the saints built
a new one. After secularization,in
1876,most of the mission lands were sold
to private settlers. The mission church
became a parish church for the surrounding
town. On Easter Sunday,March 31,1782,
Father Serra raised a cross and founded
his ninth church.

History
San Francisco de Asis was founded on June
26, 1776 by Father Francisco
Palou. It was named after Saint Francis of
Asis. Unfortunately, Native Americans
avoided this place.
Interesting Facts
This church was so strong it didn’t even fall
over in the famous San Francisco
earthquake in 1906! Did you know that
Gaspar De Portal went searching for
Monterey Bay, but he found San Francisco
Bay instead?

San Luis Obispo de Tolosa
By Dana Donaldson
History
The San Luis Obispo de Tolosa mission was
founded on September 1, 1772 by Father
Junipero Serra. This mission was the fifth to be
founded in California, and is named for Saint
Luis, Bishop of Toulouse. San Luis Obispo de
Tolosa is located in the city of San Luis Obispo,
at Monterey and Chorro Streets.
Interesting Facts
San Luis Obispo de Tolosa is located near the
Valley of Bears. It is called the Valley of Bears
because, there was a humongous population of
bears. They decided to hunt the bears and send
the meat to other missions to keep from
starvation. Since there were so many friendly
Native Americans, Father Serra decided to
locate his next mission in San Luis Obispo.

San Fernando Rey de Espana
By Daniel Papacica
History
The San Fernando Rey de Espana mission was
founded in September 8, 1797 by St. Ferdinand,
King of Spain. It was the seventeenth founded
out of twenty-one in California. This mission is
located on Mission Drive one and a half miles
west of the city of San Fernando. In spite of all
the precautions taken in construction of the
large church, it could not withstand the violent
shaking of the 1812 earthquakes.
Interesting Facts
Mission San Fernando had over 30,000 grape
vines and a wine factory. After out growing their
last church, St. Ferdinand decided to build a
new one. The repairs made to the church
afterward were so substantial that it probably
would have then stood for a very long time. It
was two stories high, 243 feet long, 50 feet
wide, and fronted by a colonnade with 20
arches. After the discovery of gold, vandals dug
up the church floor looking for buried gold.

History
●
The San Francisco Solano is the twenty first
mission. It was founded on July 4,1823 by
Father Jose Altimira. Its location is in the town
of Sonoma, 20 miles north of San Francisco on
State Highway 12.
Interesting facts
Mission San Francisco Solano was the only
mission founded after Mexico's independence
from Spain. It was also the only mission founded
without the prior approval of the Church. The
brash Father Jose Altimira, sent from Spain in
1819 to assist at Mission Dolores, devised a plan
to found a new mission to the north where the
climate was warmer. Eventually the Church gave
their approval for the new Mission San Francisco
Solano,to be run by Father Altimira, but insisted
that Missions Dolores and San Rafale be
undisturbed.

Mission San Juan
Capistrano
By Hailey Fannin
History
San Juan Capistrano was the seventh mission
founded. San Juan Capistrano's nickname is
Jewel of the Missions. The mission was
originally founded on October 30, 1775 by Fr.
Lasuen. The site was abandoned after eight
days due to an attack on the San Diego
mission. A year later Father Junipero Serra
returned on November 1,1776 . The little
chapel completed in the first year is still in use
today. It is believed that this chapel is the
oldest church in California.
Interesting Facts
In November 1796 what was to be the most
magnificent church of all churches in
California was starting to be built. Sadly, this
beautiful church was destroyed by the
earthquake of 1812 . Restoration was not
completed until after 1987. This little chapel
is still standing today and is called “Father
Serra's Church”.

History
●
The La Purisima Concepcion was the eleventh
mission founded. It was founded on December
8, 1787 by Father Firmin Lasuen.
Facts
●
The La Purisima Concepcion was named for:
“The Immaculate Concepcion of Mary the Most
Pure.” There was an earthquake in the early
hours on December 12, 1812, that shook the
ground for four minutes causing incredible
damage to the mission's buildings. Then half an
hour later the earth shook again, finishing all of
the destruction. Shortly after heavy rains came
and flooded everything there was.

In 1824, when the word came to the La
Purisima neophytes that one of their brother
natives had been flogged at Mission Santa Ines,
and the ensuing fight resulted in the death of
two Native Americans , they revolted. Mission
Santa Ines took control of La Purisima
Concepcion for a month. When the governor
heard what was happening he sent soldiers
from Monterey. The battle was three hours. In
the end, the Native Americans surrendered,
sixteen of the Native Americans died and
several more were injured. Ten years after the

Carmel Mission
by Melanie Verga
History
The Carmel Mission, also known as Mission
Carmel Basilica, is the second mission to be built.
It was founded on June 3,1770 by Father Junipero
Serra. The Carmel Mission was named after Saint
Charles Borromoe. It is located a few miles south
of the city of Carmel on Junipero Avenue.
Facts
The Carmel Mission is believed by many to be the
most beautiful of all the California missions. It is
here that Fr. Serra made his headquarters for his
California missionary work, and where he was
buried upon his death in 1784. A year after its
founding, the mission was moved from Monterey
to a beautiful site in Carmel Valley. The Monterey
site was not only inadequate for growing crops, it
was a long way from where the Native Americans
resided. Fr. Serra was buried in the sanctuary
beside the alter in the adobe church next to his
longtime friend Fr .Crespi. A few years later the
current large stone church was built around the
small adobe church.

San Rafael Arcangel
by Robert Brown
History
This mission was founded in
December 14, 1817 by Father Vicente
de Sarria. This site was originally
dedicated as an “asistencia”
(sub-mission) of Mission Dolores.
Interesting Facts
San Rafael was to serve as a convalescent
hospital for the many sick neophytes
(Christianized Native Americans).
Concerned that the high death rate of the
Mission Dolores neophytes was partly due
to the damp climate, the padres decided to
send the sick to a better location in order to
recover. After that, there was a remarkable
improvement in their health.

Mission Foods
By Natalie Sanford
Basic Mission Foods
Pozole is a soup that the missionaries ate. All
missions had an orchard with grapes for
producing wine. Crops had wheat, corn, peas,
barley, lentils, and beans in them. The missions
sharpened the taste of their food with chilies.
Missionaries also eat bunelos, pumpkin cakes,
and iced Mexican chocolate.
Food Preparation
The ingredients the missionaries used was
mostly harvested and rarely brought by ship.
●
The food preparations were almost always
directed by a padre.
●
Only the Indian women prepared the food.

The History
San Jaun Bautista was founded in June
24,1797 by Fermin Lasuen for John
the Baptist. It was founded 13 days
after Mission San Jose.
Fun Facts
Did you know that San Juan Bautista is on the San
Andreas Fault? The shaking was so bad, the
missionaries had to sleep outside. It caused a lot of
damage and the mission had to be repaired
numerous times. The population of the missions was
growing larger it was a real big problem when the
church collapsed. In 1803 there were plans to build a
larger mission.

San Miguel Mission
By Ryan Hartley
History
The San Miguel Arcangel was founded in the
summer of 1797. It was the third mission
founded by Father Fermin Lasuen. This
mission was named after Saint Miguel the
Archangel. It was also the 16 mission
founded.
Interesting facts
There were 15 children baptized on the day the
San Miguel Archangel was founded.
Accompanying the padres were people called
neophyte. Neophyte are Native Americans who
have been Christianized. The Neophyte helped
get the local Indians to come to the mission and
stay there. For a very long time the natives
were busy making and drying large amounts of
adobe bricks for a new church that they were
going to make. The church was completed in
just two years!
More Interesting Facts
Above the alter in the mission there
is a thing called the “The All Seeing
Eye of God” .It is called that
because there are windows that
shine light in all directions. In 1878
all the parts of the mission was
sold except for the church which
they kept. Sadly, one of the people
who bought the mission was later
killed by tramps looking for gold,
but the tramps were executed for
the crimes they had committed.
More Interesting Facts
The mission had imitation marble, arches,
and columns. The mission was filled very
quickly after the neophyte convinced other
natives to come and live in the mission with
them.

History
San Juan Bautista Mission was the fifteenth
mission built. It was founded by Father Fermin
Lasuen on June 24,1797 and named after John
the Baptist. The mission could fit nearly 1,000
people. The mission is located 17 miles north of
Salinas, in the center of San Juan Valley.
Interesting Facts
Did you know that the San Juan Bautista
Mission was built right on top of the San
Andreas fault? Sadly right after they
finished building it, an earthquake occurred.
On October 1798, the shaking of the
earthquake was so bad, the missionaries
decided to sleep outside. There was as
many as 6 earthquakes per day. Since the
population was growing furiously, plans
were already at work to rebuild the mission.

Santa Cruz Mission
by Samuel Bishop
History
This mission was discovered, August 28, 1791 by
Father Fermin Lasuen.
The mission Santa Cruz was named for the
Sacred Cross.
The location is on Mission Hill overlooking the
City of Santa Cruz on the northern shore of
Monterey . It is the 12th mission built.
Interesting facts
●
Mission Santa Cruz sits on a very gentle
slope surrounded by the very beautiful and
tall redwood trees, not very far from the
Pacific Ocean. When Father Fermin Lasuen
raised the big cross and said Mass on this
picturesque location, very little did he realize
the misfortune and troublesome times that
the world would bring to the mission. The
missionSanta Cruz was owned by Father
Fermin Lasuen.

Mission Santa Barbara
By Luke Franklin
History
●
The Santa Barbara mission was founded on
December 4, 1786 by Father Fermin
Francisco de Lasuen. It was the tenth mission
to be built in Califorina. It was named for
Saint Barbara. The Location of Santa
Barbara, is on a hill at the end of Laguna
Street, overlooking the city of Santa Barbara.
An earthquake, in 1925 nearly destroyed the
beautiful stone church that had survived for
many years.
Interesting Facts
●
Eventually, construction of a second
quadrangle was begun adjacent to the first.
Throughout all this construction a succession
of larger adobe churches were built. Father
Narciso Duran moved his headquarters to
Santa Barbara after changing from San Jose.
Sadly, Father Serria died just one month after
the new Governor told him that permission
was granted to found his, longed for, mission
in Santa Barbara.
More Cool Facts
●
The first missions buildings were made of
logs, with thatch roofs. Later, an adobe wing
completed the quadrangle with a dormitory,
kitchen and storeroom. There were also rows
of over 200 houses for the mission natives
built next to the mission.

Santa Clara de Asis
by Trevor Lin
History
The Santa Clara de Asis mission was
founded in January 12, 1777 by Father Junipero
Serra. It is the eighth mission out of the twentyone missions. Mission Santa Clara was one of
the last missions subject to secularization in
1836. After some of the mission lands were
returned to the church, the Franciscans turned
the land over to the Jesuit Order to be used as
the site for the first college in California.
Facts
The Santa Clara de Asis mission was the first
mission to be named after a woman, Saint
Claire of Assisi, founder of the Poor Clares order
of nuns. Flooding of the nearby Guadalupe
River forced the padres to move the mission
many times. On the third moving site, a large
adobe church stood for 34 years until a severe
earthquake in1818 forced the mission to be
moved again. Finally, construction on the fifth
move, the present mission site, began in 1822.
