I had the opportunity to attend a Fourth of July parade, enjoy a Fourth of July fireworks display, and also learned some little-known facts about the Declaration of Independence . . . 1) Benjamin Franklin wrote the first declaration of independence. In April 1775, the Revolutionary War began at Lexington and Concord. Only July 5, 1975 – an entire year before the adoption of the Declaration of Independence – the Continental Congress adopted the Olive Branch Petition, written by John Dickinson, which appealed directly to British King George III for reconciliation between the Colonies and Great Britain. Though Franklin signed the petition for the sake of consensus, he radically differed with it and said that stronger sentiments were necessary because the petition was destined to be rejected. He was so appalled by British atrocities and exhausted of British rule that he planned the first articles of confederation and drafted a declaration of independence to be issued by none other than Gen. George Washington. So strong was the language of the draft that Thomas Jefferson wrote that though some members of Congress – including him – “approved highly of it”, some were “revolted at it.” Jefferson explained in his private commentary that “proposing it to Congress as the subject for any vote whatever would startle many members.” It seems Congress just wasn’t ready to throw down the gauntlet yet. My, how things can change in a year! 2) Jefferson had problems with the adopted version of the Declaration of Independence, which was written primarily by him. On June 11, 1776, the Second Continental Congress appointed a committee of five men (Franklin, Jefferson, John Adams, Robert Livingston and Roger Sherman) to write a declaration of independence. The committee, in turn, appointed Jefferson to produce a first draft for consideration, which he did by utilizing other documents, such as his own draft of a Virginia constitution, the Virginia Declaration of Rights and state appeals for independence. The committee and, later, Congress made some revisions to Jefferson’s draft before formally adopting it July 4, 1776. In the end, Jefferson was troubled by their revisions, especially Franklin and Adams’ removal of a diatribe blaming King George III for the trans-Atlantic slave trade. Who knows? Maybe if that paragraph were left in the document, our Founding Fathers might not be maligned so much for being pro-slavery. 3) The Declaration of Independence wasn’t signed July 4, 1776. On July 1, 1776, the Second Continental Congress began meeting in Philadelphia, at what is now known as Independence Hall. Delegates spent the next few days debating and revising the Committee of Five’s draft. After adopting the Declaration of Independence on July 4, they didn’t sign it for roughly another month because New York’s delegates weren’t authorized to vote in favor of independence until July 9, and it also took two additional weeks for the declaration to be produced in its final printed form. Most delegates signed the official declaration August 2, but at least six others didn’t sign it until later, and two more (Dickinson and Livingston) never signed it at all. 4) The original Declaration of Independence wasn’t written on paper. As the National Archives and Records Administration explains, the original was “engrossed on parchment which is an animal skin specially treated with lime and stretched to create a strong, longlasting writing support. The printed version is on paper and was read aloud from town squares throughout the colonies, so that those who could not read would receive the news about intended separation from England.” Chuck Norris Conservative Chronicle I love history, especially when it pertains to our great country. —CC— At a Fourth of July celebration Thursday, a few friends and myself were talking about how few World War II veterans were left. I have great respect and much admiration for our WWII veterans . . . my father was one of them. The following story was sent to me awhile back and I thought this was a perfect time to share it. Even though it was written about World War I, it reminds me of some of our local WWII veterans . . . He was very old now, but he could still hold himself stiffly to attention before the monument. His war, the one to end all wars, now just a fading part of history. Very few could remember firsthand the savageness of the ordeal that sent millions of young men to their deaths. “Cannon fodder” they’d call them, sent before the guns to be mowed down and blown apart by chunks of metal that had decimated their frail bodies. The cream of a generation, almost wiped out. He was haunted by the faces of the boys he’d had to order into battle, the ones who’d never come back. Yet one nameless ghost was able to bring a measure of comfort to his uneasy mind. At the sound of the gun signaling the eleventh hour, he was mentally transported back to the fields of Flanders. The battle had raged for over two hours, with neither side gaining any advantage. Wave after wave of soldiers had been dispatched from the muddy trenches and sent over the top. So many had died already that day that he decided he couldn’t afford to lose any more men before reinforcements arrived. Perhaps they’d give the remnants a few more days of life. There came a slight lull in the battle, due to the sheer exhaustion of men on both sides. It was always the same. There existed an unspoken agreement between the warring armies that they all be allowed some respite before continuing with the next onslaught. Time to catch one’s breath, until it was taken away forever. During this interval, a young soldier came up to him requesting he be allowed to go over the top. He looked at the boy who couldn’t have been more than nineteen. Was this extreme bravery in the face of the enemy, or was the soldier so scared he just needed to get it over with? “Why would you want to throw your life away, soldier? It’s almost certain death to go out there.” “My best friend went out over an hour ago, Captain, and he hasn’t come back. He could be lying out there hurt. I must find him, sir.” The pleading look in the young man’s eyes touched him. But to let him go now would be to condemn him to death. “I’m sorry, son, but I can’t let you go out there. It would be suicidal. Forcefully he said, “Go back to your post, soldier. That’s an order.” The young man turned, his head hung low, and slowly made his way back. The battle resumed its full fury, the guns pounding and acrid smoke stealing the little bit of fresh air that was left. Deafening explosions and showers of muddy earth hid the sight and sound of screaming men and horses. It was nearly two hours before the next pause in the conflict. The captain rolled a cigarette between shaking fingers. The smoke could not even curl up to penetrate the foul air. As he looked through the haze that surrounded him, he saw a figure approaching. It was the young soldier. He’d come back again. “Captain, please, please let me go out onto the battlefield,” he begged. “I know my friend must be hurt and calling for me. I must go to him, sir. I must.” There were tears in his eyes. It was as if this were the most important thing in the world to him. “Soldier, I’m sorry, but your friend is probably dead. What purpose would it serve to let you sacrifice your life, too?” “At least I’d know I’d tried, sir. He’d do the same thing in my shoes. I know he would.” He was about to order the boy back to the ranks again, but the impact of his words softened his heart. He remembered the awful pain he’d felt himself when his brother had died and he’d never had the chance to say good-bye. “All right, soldier, you can go.” Despite all the horror around them, he saw a radiant smile on the boy’s face. It was as if a great weight had been lifted from his shoulders. “Thank you, sir,” said the soldier. As he watched him slip away, he heard him shout out: “God bless you, sir.” It was a long time before the guns fell silent, and each side was allowed to gather their dead and wounded. The captain remembered the young soldier. He had to know what had become of him. He looked through the piles of bodies. There were so many. Perhaps he should check the living, just in case. When he came to the makeshift hospital, he looked carefully through the casualties. With a shock, he soon found himself before the prone body of the soldier. He was alive, but mortally wounded. He knelt down beside the young man and gently laid a hand on his shoulder. “I’m so sorry. I knew I was wrong to let you go.” “Oh, no, sir. I’m glad you did, and I’m glad you are here now so I can thank you. You see, sir, I found my friend. He was badly wounded, but I was able to comfort him at the end. As I held him dying in my arms, he looked me in the eyes and said, ‘I knew you’d come.” The young soldier gave one last gasp and slipped quietly into oblivion. *** As the bugle sounded “Taps”, the old captain, tears streaming down his face, envisioned once again the smiling face and hear the words, “God bless you, sir.” Looking up, he could almost hear the stone monument calling out to him: “I knew you’d come.” — Christine Ann Maxwell-Osborn —CC— Since the beginning of our country, almost every generation has been called on to defend our freedom. Thank God for those that answered the call . . . and continue to answer it. HOLDENVILLE TRIBUNE—JULY 10, 2013—PAGE A-3 Gene & Susie To Celebrate Golden Anniversary Reception Saturday at First Church of God Gene and Susie Brittain were married on July 13, 1963 in Wewoka. The couple made their home in Holdenville where they raised their three children, James, Jesse and Tanna. Gene was employed with Hughes County until his retirement. Susie owned and operated a daycare until her retirement in 2001. Their son, James Brittain and his wife, Sue of Broken Arrow have two children, Derrick and Cameron; Jesse and his wife, Dawnna of Byng have two children, Jessika and Thomas; Tanna and husband Mike Allison of Seminole have two children, Pamela and Joseph. The couple also have three great-grandchildren, Bradley, Austin and Abrum. The Brittains will celebrate with family and friends on Saturday, July 13 at 2p.m. at the First Church of God in Holdenville. The couple will renew their vows and will be honored with a reception following. All friends and family are invited to attend. The Year Was 1955 SEAMPRUFE NEWS by Rusty Buckle Well, well, here it is almost time to go barefooted. When I was a kid we pulled off our shoes in April and didn’t put them on again until the first frost in Fall. By mid-July our feet were so tough we could stand on sandburs without feeling them. By September we could have stomped a porcupine to death without picking up a quill. Years ago down at Stuart we had a feller who pitched baseball for our town team, and he could pitch better when he was barefooted. Lee Irwin was his name, and when old Lee kicked off his shoes and dug his long toes into that pitcher’s mound you couldn’t see his fast ball when it came over the plate. He always said his bare toes gave him more power because he could get a firmer grip on the ground. One Sunday when Stuart was playing Calvin, along about 1927, Lee held Calvin hitless until the first half of the ninth inning. Kize Morse was up to bat for Calvin, and ol’ Lee wound up and threw so hard that the toenail on his right big toe snapped off like a dry twig, and this threw Lee off balance and the ball he threw was duck soup for Kize. He hit it so hard it fell over into the next pasture between two Holsteins—a home run. Anyway, it was a great game, and the big fight after the game was even better. In those days Stuart and Calvin ball games always ended up in a gang fight. Calvin boys have knocked enough teeth out of Stuart boys to fill a rain barrel, and Stuart boys have knocked enough hide off of Calvin boys to cover Holdenville airport. Times have changed. Folks are more neighborly and better sports these days. And I’m glad of it. I’m getting too old to fight and too fat to run. The big feller who joined our force this week is Gene Brummett. He is way up over six feet tall, and when our supervisors talk with him they have to look up like they are looking for flying saucers. Gene came to us from Bristow, where he worked for WellKalter, makers of “Artemis” lingerie. He is married and has two children. He will be doing time studies and various other things with us. It’s a pleasure to have him with us. Walt Adam, Stuart, and Joe George, a former Stuart resident, who now calls Cuba his home, were plant visitors Wednesday. They met Andy Scanlon and Walt said, “Well, Mr. Scanlon, you look much younger than I thought you would look.” And Andy pumped Walt’s hand with enthusiasm and said, “Friend and neighbor, I thank you.” I’ve never seen a heartier handshake. Joyce Waldroup, Vera Mayes, and Geraldine Sanders are back at work after being ill for several days. We are happy to see them again. Our weekly sick lists still remain long. Jewell Parks has been hospitalized with influenza. She has been quite ill. Nettie Thornton, Abbie Hearn, Billie Knight, Ann Madden, Myrtle Robinson, Verda Graham and Otha Hulsey have missed some work because of sickness. Eula Roberts, Alyene Miller and Marie Thompson have had sick children, and Julia House’s grandmother has been ill. Ellen Hall’s husband, Woodrow, has been hospitalized. He has been painfully ill from the effects of a ruptured appendix. To all of these people we extend our sincere sympathy and the hope that sound health will be their’s from now on. Before too long we ought to have another party, don’t you think? Let’s kinda pass the word around and see what kind of a party we would enjoy the most. A tacky party? Another amateur contest? Bingo? A picnic? And before we know it, it will be time to turn on the air conditioning system. Won’t it be wonderful to work again in cool, air-conditioned comfort all summer? Recent personnel changes in the plant have brought promotions to three employees. Gertrude Grizzle, formerly a supervisor, is now acting as chief assistant to Della Pecore. In other words, Gertrude is now our assistant forelady, and will assist Della in the supervision of assembly from preliminary to boxing and folding. Mabel Ebert is in training for the supervisory post left vacant when Gertrude was promoted. Thelma Akin, formerly an auxiliary girl, is now in training as a supervisor to head the department that was supervised by Velma Berryman. Velma is on an extensive leave of absence. Right here and now we want to thank Alyene Miller for helping out so admirably in final inspection and boxing and folding when Inez Cosper was on a leave of absence. Alyene jumped in with a hearty will and helped keep matters on an even keep at a time when we really needed her. And we also are grateful to Thelma Akin for the fine work she did in the same department during Inez’s absence. She and Alyene displayed fine spirits of cooperation. We are happy to see Inez back on the job and to know that her leave of absence was very profitable to her from a health standpoint. DOWN MEMORY LANE—1955 HHS Boys Glee Club. He wrote: Hi Bill and Dayna, I want to thank you for everything that you did for us, and Bill for stopping by to visit at the Yeager community center. I didn’t get a chance to thank him for coming, and I would like for everyone to know there was no food or music and Bill came any way. I think he is vendecated , he comes to visit with people, not for the food. It was wonderful to see a few classmates and friends, everyone looked great. A few hours to visit is too short. I came home with more questions than I came with. I know Bill probably knows. I was talking to Tommy Hays in Visalia Ca. and he told me the 1907 Bank at Yeager where we visited was robbed by Pretty Boy Floyd not once but twice. I wonder if that is true. I was talking to Larry La Valley, and he told me about a time (probably about 1950) he and my brother Is Your Broker Giving You the Cold Shoulder? They stopped in front of the drug store ( was that Amos drugs?) there by your newspaper on the corner, the building with the round front. Cotton said Larry lets go in and get a banana split Larry said they had never had one before and they sat and ate them and they were the best things they had ever eaten. They must have been, that was over sixty years ago, and Larry still remembered. That was special to me because we lost Cotton this last year, Larry and he were friends growing up in Hughes County. Received my Tribune today , missed From Dayna’s desk the last two issues ,but was in today’s. I know you are so busy, but that is special. To get to see names from Hughes county, what is going on and people you know. I guess it is exciting to know they are still alive. Thanks again for every thing you do for the community, keeping us up on what’s happening. Dayna, I’m not complaining I just miss it when it’s not there. Len Pruitt HHS 1959 —DD— Had a note from our good friend Laverne Mackey Barnes. She is doing much better after having gone through heart surgery recently. It is always good to hear from her. We were happy to get to see her at Victor and Carol Pryor’s 1953-55 Reunion. Hi Bill & Dayna, Thought I’d best get a check to you before you stopped sending me the Tribune. How else would I be able to keep up with the Holdenville news— Love to you both, Laverne Mackey Barnes —0— Also had a nice note from our good friends Vern and Connie Davis. Connie has started taking chemotherapy treatments and we need to keep her in our prayers. Dearest Bill and Dayna, We want to renew our subscription for another year. CORPORATION COMMISSION OF OKLAHOMA PATRICE DOUGLAS, Chairman BOB ANTHONY, Vice Chairman DANA L. MURPHY, Commissioner DONE AND PERFORMED this 9th day of July, 2013. BY ORDER OF THE COMMISSION: PEGGY MITCHELL, Commission Secretary (Published in The Holdenville Tribune on July 10, 2013) LPXLP evidently lost his toy grabber that he plays with. Geraldine told him that it was not at her house. He argued and argued with her that it was at her house. The next Sunday Carson was sitting by me on the piano bench at church and Geraldine came over to talk to him and he told her again that his grabber was at her house. A couple of weeks after that Geraldine came by and told me she was never going to argue with Carson again because she was walking through the house and stepped on something and when she looked down there was his grabber! You know, he is the smartest three year old around!! —DD— I received a nice note from our good friend Bonnie Harrison Jones with lots of good memories. Thanks for sharing with us!! When I was growing up, we used to go to Many Springs Baptist Church on a Sunday afternoon when they had a “dinner on the ground” and all-day singing. We enjoyed the singing very much and I do remember the Osceola Four, although the only name I could remember was Jimmy Dreadfulwater. They were a wonderful quartet. I am sorry J.B. (Jimmy) and Mitchell Beaver are deceased. It’s nice to know Jimmy Anderson is now pastor at Many Springs. I’d like to know if the church still has a wild onion festival and what time of year it is. I would love to attend one. Also I recall those good ol’ days when Holdenville had Arkansas Day, Peanut Festival and John Deere Day. Or were the two latter one celebration? My memory seems to be of two different ones, so we had a total of three different times of celebration, one of each of the three days I mentioned. There would be lots of people in town, a parade, games and contests, music and fun. When did each of those fade out? I suppose the Peanut Festival stopped with the end of the farmers raising peanuts. Arkansas Day was celebrated, I am sure, because so many of Holdenville’s citizens came from Arkansas to settle in and around Holdenville. That in-cluded my mother, who was born in Big Flat, Arkansas, a few miles from Marshal. I’ve met many others who were born in Arkansas or whose parents were. I don’t know exactly what the draw was but apparently not many from our neighboring state still migrate across their western border nowadays. Your fine newspaper brings up lots of memories for people. Thanks. Bonnie Harrison Jones —DD— Thank You I would like to express my sincere appreciation to everyone who helped my husband, Charles “Boots” Nalley during his recent illness. A special thank you to the Heritage Village staff for their wonderful care during his stay there. Also, thank you to everyone who sent cards, flowers, food, and called at the time of his death. The family sincerely appreciates your thoughtfulness. Willie Nalley and Family I would like to share this poem with you. HUGS It’s wonderous what a hug can do. A hug can cheer you when you’re blue. A hug can say, “I love you so,” Or, “Gee, I hate to see you go.” A hug is, “Welcome back, again,” And “Great to see you! Where’ve you been? A hug can sooth a small child’s pain And bring a rainbow after rain The hug! There’s just no doubt about it, We scarcely could survive without it. A hug delights and warms and charms; It must be why God gave us arms. Hugs are great for fathers and mothers, Sweet for sisters, swell for brothers. And chances are your favorite aunts Love them more than potted plants. Kittens crave them. Puppies love them. Heads of state are not above them. A hug can break a language barrier, And make your travels so much merrier. No need to fret about your store of ‘em. Whatever you do, there’s always more of ‘em So spread those arms without delay, And give someone a hug today!
