COM $39,000.00 raised for Cancer Care Manitoba! Morris, MB- The lobby of the Southern MB Convention Centre and Morris Arena was filled to capacity throughout the evening of February 7, 2009, with people eager to support an event that raised funds for Cancer Care MB. In August of 2008 the Pembina Valley Twisters Junior Hockey Club Executive had an idea to hold an event in support of their President, Dale Rempel, who was recently diagnosed with cancer. They brought it to the players who jumped on the idea of having a “head shaving” event. The idea grew and along with numerous volunteers, local community members came out and gave back to an organization that supports families throughout Manitoba affected by cancer. A special part of the event was a regular season hockey game featuring the Twisters wearing Cancer Care MB commemorative jerseys, donated by Morris Build All. Attendees could purchase tickets to win the jerseys which were autographed following the game. A Pork-on-a-Bun Barbeque was held prior to the hockey game. People could also browse the numerous prize draw tables and encourage those who raised pledges to shave their heads . The hairdressers from Colors Salon estimated they shaved 70 heads, with over 40 participants having collected pledges towards the event. Among those experiencing a head shave or “leg wax” were four of our staff members and we have photos to prove it! Rempel Insurance staff also volunteered to help with the event and specifically assisted with the rainbow auction and silent auction. Beginning with donations from contacts of the hockey club, the support quickly expanded to include support within the insurance industry and community members. Items for the fundraiser flooded in. Many Insurance Companies, Rempel Insurance clients and suppliers, local businesses, friends and family throughout Southern MB donated cash or items towards the auctions for the event. Dave Schioler, CEO of the Insurance Brokers of MB Association (IBAM) and his wife Sharon, along with Membership Services Coordinator Tammy Shpak and Ron Kaposy, were in attendance for the evening. IBAM’s participation also included the donation of a 42” Panasonic television to the auction. Dan Hiebert from Red River Valley Mutual Ins. Company was also there to present a cheque for $1,000.00 to Dale for Cancer Care MB. It was great to also have the support of many insurance brokers and companies from around the province show their support by attending this fun event. Brokers were in attendance from Winnipeg, St. Claude, Portage La Prairie and Winkler. The Pembina Valley Twisters had an initial goal to raise $25,000 and by the end of the evening over $39,000 was raised. The overwhelming support is much appreciated by those who have definitely helped to make a difference; so that one day we will have a cure.
