OUR MISSION
The Harbor Springs Area Historical

preserving our histories and traditions
thereby deepening our shared

Part of the fun of our work
at the historical society is the
researching, reporting and
retelling of various chapters
in history. For ourselves, we
started a new chapter in the
book of the Historical Society
just five years ago when we
opened the Harbor Springs
History Museum, which we
plan to celebrate later this year.
As in any great story, it’s the
characters that make it come to
life. For the historical society,
one of our central characters in
the museum chapter has been
Melanie Meengs and her kids Conner and Molly shown
Melanie Meengs, our director at one of the museum’s winter open house events.
of development since 2005.
With her background in development work, Melanie assisted our organization
in its amazing growth from a $25,000 annual budget to a successful $1.9 million
capital campaign. More importantly, Melanie made connections with people—
from volunteers to members, donors to families just stopping by the museum.
Melanie always shared a smile, offered her assistance and showed great care for
both her work and our people.
So it is with heartfelt gratitude that we send Melanie off on her next chapter:
working alongside her husband Bill in his law office and being a great mom to
Molly, 10, and Conner, 7, as they get more involved in various activities. We
wish you and your family the best!
We would also like to thank our outgoing board trustees whose terms on our
board finished in September. This august group includes Jerry Burns, Melanie
Fisher, Judy Meyer and Bruce Riley, all of whom have given generously of their
time and talents to make the museum a reality.
And you—however you came to hold this newsletter in your hands, whether
visiting the museum for the first time on a beautiful fall day like today or as a
long-time member, we thank you for your interest and support. You make it
possible to maintain history’s home in Harbor Springs.
With gratitude,

Our people are the best!
Each September, the Historical Society thanks its
outstanding group of volunteers the best way we know how—
we feed them great food. This September, we had our biggest
crowd yet for our appreciation dinner with 45 volunteers,
board members and staff in attendance.
Our volunteers help us welcome museum visitors, plan
events, prepare mailings, bake delicious cookies, keep the
museum grounds looking tidy and help with projects great
and small throughout the building. In short, they make things
happen at the Historical Society! We couldn’t do it without
them.
If you are interested in giving just a few hours of your time
a month, we can certainly find a volunteer job that matches
your interests and abilities. With a great roster of events
already planned for 2014, we have ample opportunities in store
for you. In addition to the reward of giving of your time and
talents while having fun, you always have next year’s volunteer
appreciation dinner to look forward to!
For more information, please call our office manager
Tricia Anez at (231) 526-9771 and she will find just the right
job for you. Tricia can also be reached by email at
[email protected].
Welcome aboard, new HSAHS trustees!
The Historical Society is pleased to welcome three new
members to our dedicated Board of Trustees. Beginning their
three-year terms this October are Cathy Brodhead-Lauer,
Dennis Hug and Win Stebbins. Each of these incoming
trustees has been involved with the historical society in
various capacities over the years.
In addition to volunteering in the archives for the last
four years, Cathy Brodhead-Lauer worked for the City of
Harbor Springs when City Hall was located in the “museum”
building. Many of you may know Dennis who, along with
his wife Suzanne, owns the Harbor Springs IGA. The Hugs
have been supporters of the Historical Society and Dennis
recently completed several years of service on the Chamber of
Commerce board. Win Stebbins is a regular volunteer at the
museum front desk during the summer, and his family has
been a part of Roaring Brook history since 1902. We thank
them all for their commitment to the Harbor Springs Area
Historical Society and welcome them aboard.
Save the Dates for 2014!
On the Cover:
This image of Jean Baptiste Assiginack comes from our newest
exhibit, Turning Point: The War of 1812 from the Native
American Perspective, which opened in June. The original
oil painting was created by Good Hart artist Jane Cardinal to
depict this locally born warrior who played an important role
in the War of 1812. To learn more about Assiginack and the
impact this conflict had on the Odawa people of Little Traverse
Bay, please visit the exhibit which will be on display through
May 2014. The complete exhibit text along with a bibliography
is available for download on our website.

Little Traverse Lighthouse Tour back in 2014
You heard it here first! Our popular tour of the Little
Traverse Lighthouse on Harbor Point is back for 2014. The
Historical Society will offer one day of guided tours of this
1884 lighthouse on Saturday, October 4, 2014. Tickets for
the tour will be $30 and will go on sale in January 2014.
We will also welcome back Terry Pepper, executive director
of the Great Lakes Lighthouse Keepers Association for a
presentation the evening before the tour, Friday, Oct. 3.
Tickets for the Friday evening talk at the museum are $15.
If you are interested in the tour, please call or email the
Historical Society office and we will keep your name on our
early registration list. You can reach us at (231) 526-9771 or
[email protected].
Our thanks to the Harbor Point Association and its
Lighthouse Committee for granting permission for the 2014
tour. We appreciate their support.
Collections Corner
Second Annual Blessing of the
Fleet and Summer White Party
One of the main functions of an archivist is to gain
control over a collection so that the institution knows what
information is within their archives. When I began a year
ago, many of our collections here were unprocessed and were
not entered into our database so it was difficult for us to know
what we have and where to find it. When going through
our collections, I found many interesting things (all of which
are now cataloged and on our website!), but one of the more
intriguing is the newsletters made by the students at Harbor
Springs High School during the 1920s.
At this time, there was a student run newsletter called
High School (or Hi-School in later years) Life and it had
articles about sports, classes, and town events. It gives a
good look at the lives of teenagers in Harbor Springs in the
1920s. We have newsletters beginning from 1921 and ending
in 1927 with some gaps in between. As the volume numbers
are sequential, it is probable that they were continuing with
the newsletter throughout these years but we do not yet have
these in our collections.
Scanned issues of High School Life can be found on our
website under Collections.

Thanks to all who made our first Blessing of the Fleet and
Summer White Party a smashing success and the unofficial
kickoff of Summer 2013. We are already looking ahead to
2014 and continuing this new tradition on Little Traverse Bay.
Please save the date and help us welcome the 2014 summer
season in style! (Photos courtesy Phillip Hutchinson)

Redesigned HSAHS website includes
online collections access
museum opened in December 2008. The HSAHS board
of trustees then identified computerized cataloging of its
holdings as a primary goal.
Through funding from the Barker Welfare
Foundation, the Historical Society hired Talia Hofacker
in June 2012 as its first professional archivist. Further grant
support from the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural
Affairs last fall has sustained this part-time staff position.
Talia holds a masters degree in library and information
science from Wayne State University where she specialized
in archives. In the last 16 months, Talia has cataloged well
over 9,000 items and over 1,000 names in our PastPerfect
software, most of which are searchable from your home
computer.
While our virtual door is always open, we also hope you
will feel free to call us if you have any questions about the
website. We are happy to help you with your search!
Have you ever wondered what treasures are contained
in the Historical Society’s collections? Now, we have an
answer to your question. Last month, the Harbor Springs
Area Historical Society officially launched its newly
redesigned website. And while the site offers a fresh design,
the real update is in the site’s content. Now, from the
comfort of your own home, you can browse and search the
Historical Society’s collections online.
The website redesign was funded by a grant from the
Petoskey-Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation’s
endowment fund as well as the Ann K. Irish Fund and the
Tom and Susie Carruthers Fund. In addition, this grant
also provided funding for on-site access to Ancestry.com
(Library Edition) at the museum. The popular genealogy
website is accessible at no cost through two dedicated
computers on the museum’s second floor.
With this new website, we have essentially opened the
virtual doors to our collections. Now people can search
for specific pieces of history relating to Harbor Springs or
simply browse old photos and artifacts. It is the culmination
of years of work by HSAHS staff and volunteers and has
been made possible by several different funding agencies.
Although the ground work of collecting started when
the Historical Society was formed in 1990, professional care
and expansion of the collections began in earnest when the

2012: Bringing history to life
2012 Annual Report
Thanks to your support, the year 2012 saw history
coming to life in exciting new ways. The revival of our Shay
Days event included a first-person interpreter as Ephraim
Shay. The inventor’s life was marked by ingenuity and a
sense of playfulness that extended beyond the world of
trains. And what better way to share these facets than
through Mr. Shay himself. We welcomed over 200 visitors
during our two-day event including several descendants of
the Shay family.
Our 2012 Harbor History Talk series reached over 500
attendees with topics ranging from the War of 1812 to the
State of Michigan’s 175th birthday. We were also honored
to host the Harbor Springs premiere of WCMU’s “Into
the North,” a 30-minute documentary exploring the early
development of Little Traverse Bay as a resort destination.
Visitors enjoyed not only the timely topics and entertaining
speakers but also benefitted from the upgrades to our
second-floor audio/video equipment.
We were thrilled to share stories of this community’s
history with over 150 students who visited the museum
with school groups, with teachers, and through various
summer programs. The Harbor Point Summer Camp
program sent two groups of school-age kids who especially
enjoyed learning about transportation and the early resort
years in our temporary exhibit, A Delightful Destination:
Little Traverse Bay at the Turn of the Century. This
temporary exhibit was created by the Clarke Historical
Library and included photographs and ephemera from our
collections.
During 2012 we also breathed new life into our
collections with the addition of our first professional
archivist, Talia Hofacker. By cataloging and organizing the
contents of our archives, we could start sharing the stories
that these important photos, papers and artifacts hold.
Bringing history to life was made possible by the
generous support of those listed here. Thank you for
supporting history’s home in Harbor Springs.
