• Quork Walker was a former slave and Barre resident whose lawsuit resulted
in a decision in 1783 declaring slavery illegal in Massachusetts.

• The Elm Hill School/Institute for Feebled Minded Youth founded in 1848
was the first school of its kind in the country.
25. Barre Plains Rich’s Sash & Blind Factory Site
26. Barre Historical Society & Museum
• Jacob Riis – well known late 19th century photographer, journalist, and police
reporter who documented the poor living and work conditions in New York City
slums particularly the Lower East Side – retired to a Barre farm in 1907. His
grave is in Riverside Cemetery with an unmarked granite boulder by his wishes.

but with the industrial revolution, mill villages grew up along the Ware and
Prince Rivers. Today’s South Barre and Barre Plains are classic examples of mill villages
and White Valley was lost to watershed protection for Boston in the 1930s.
The Barre Wool Combing Company no longer operates and the Charles G. Allen
Company has downsized to a shadow of its past.
Many Greek Revival homes and public buildings grace the town Common.
Today, Barre is a comfortable agricultural suburb. ❦
