Let’s go over the path ahead and get an introduction to what axidbook has in store for us! Turn to page 3… THE PATH AHEAD Alpha Xi Delta is based on a solid foundation laid by our Founders in 1893. The purpose of our sisterhood is best described in our mission statement: Alpha Xi Delta Fraternity is to enrich the life of every Alpha Xi Delta. We will: • Nurture unity and cooperation. • Foster intellectual, professional, and personal growth. • Exemplify the highest ethical conduct. • Instill community responsibility. • Perpetuate fraternal growth. In simpler terms, our mission means the foundation of Alpha Xi Delta is based on four core purposes - knowledge, leadership, service and sisterhood. These are the ideas that our Bonds of Sisterhood New Member education program is also based on. We hope you will enjoy your new member experience. Studying these lessons and learning about AΞΔ will broaden your knowledge of Greek Life and what it means to be a lifelong Alpha Xi Delta sister. Welcome and congratulations on your choice to join one the most elite and innovative women’s fraternities! Now…let’s see how it will inspire you! 3 axidbook Guide Take a look at the axibook guide on the right side of the page. If your chapter is very large, you may invite just your executive officers and new member team to play with the new member class. On page 4 of your axidbook, you will see a list of questions. You have 15 minutes to go around the room and find sisters who match up with the questions on your paper. Have the sister that matches write her name under the question and answer the question she matches…remember…no sister can match more than one question! Don’t be shy! This is your chance to get to know each other better – READY…GO! DISCUSSION – Did you learn any interesting facts about each other? Does anyone want to share? Did you find that you have things in common with a room full of women you just met? Does anyone want to share something they found? CONGRATULATIONS! You have just experienced the first feelings of sisterhood! One of the first feelings of sisterhood is being surrounded by women you may or may not know and finding out how similar you really are! What’s a really cool thing about Alpha Xi Delta? It will help you develop this bond throughout the rest of your life! 4 PLEDGING CEREMONY OVERVIEW (page 5 of axidbook) The Alpha Xi Delta Pledging Ceremony is our organization’s way of formally welcoming you into our sisterhood. Membership in Alpha Xi Delta is a life long commitment and during the pledging ceremony, you will recite your pledge to our organization and take a solemn oath of allegiance to our sisterhood. This event should be a beautiful and special milestone in your Alpha Xi Delta new member experience as it marks the official start of your life long journey with us! Let’s learn a little about the ceremony… WHAT ARE PLEDGING SYMBOLS? Colors – A twist of double blue and gold ribbon, which identifies you as a part of Alpha Xi Delta Pink Rose – The pink Kilarney rose is the flower our Founders selected to represent Alpha Xi Delta. New Member Pin – your most sacred possession in Alpha Xi Delta as a new member. The new member pin is yours to wear with the utmost care until it is replaced at initiation with our most beloved outward symbol, the golden Quill. WHAT IS THE SYMPHONY? The Symphony is Alpha Xi Delta’s open creed or belief. Chapters across the country recite it to reaffirm our values and ideals that the Founders so clearly defined for us. You will learn more about the total meaning of The Symphony in future lessons but it is listed below for you to read: These things do we earnestly desire A clear vision of life That with gracious and kindly hearts We may share both joy and sorrow And bring into living reality the sisterhood of women An appreciation of real merit and worth Steadfastness of soul That without bitterness or defeat We may encounter misfortune and with humility meet success. These things O Lord Help us to instill within our hearts That we may grow in courage, graciousness and peace. IS THE PLEDGING CEREMONY SECRET? YES! The pledging ceremony is not to be shared with anyone outside of Alpha Xi Delta. It should be a special occurrence for you as a new member and divulging its secrets is a great wrong against our sisterhood. 5 WRAP UP THE OVERVIEW SECTION… • • • • • • Go over details for the pledging ceremony – attire, time, place, date, etc. o Fill out required new member paperwork for pledging Go over what must be paid prior to pledging – give new members the date it is due and instructions on how to pay o Explain financial obligations and break down of dues – give new members a copy of financial information o Sign Omega financial contracts Set up time, day and location for weekly new member meetings Get a contact list for all new members (name, phone number, address, e-mail) Give chapter contact list to all new members Give new members a copy of The Bonds of Sisterhood Bonds of Sisterhood Reading Assignment for Next Week – pages 23 and 3239 for a welcome from National Council and an overview of the college chapter. NEW MEMBER PIN/QUILL ATTIRE MINI PROGRAM Have the Programs VP or Ritual Chair go over this mini program just after pledging with the new member class… FACILITATOR: You have just gone through Alpha Xi Delta’s pledging ceremony and received your new member pin. As you know, the pin is yours to wear provided you do it in the proper manner. Let’s go over some common new member pin etiquette. It is the same etiquette initiated members use when wearing their Quill! • • • • • • • Your pin goes on the left side of your chest Nothing can be worn above your pin Pins can only be worn with proper attire – classy business casual or church type attire is appropriate. Pins may not be worn with denim, flip-flops, or strapless tops or dresses. Pins may never be worn while drinking. Pins should be worn to chapter meetings or other Greek/campus functions (award ceremonies, special events, etc.) provided proper attire is appropriate. You should always behave with utmost respect and class and be an example to others as an Alpha Xi Delta, especially while wearing your pin… AS A PLEDGED MEMBER YOU NOW REPRESENT OVER 115 YEARS OF ALPHA XI DELTA SISTERS AND THE ENTIRE GREEK COMMUNITY – WEAR YOUR PIN WITH PRIDE! 6 LESSON 1 – Get Started, Get Inspired Who would like to read the quote on page 6? (If no one volunteers, select someone to read.) Let’s take the first step on our Alpha Xi Delta journey together! Turn to page 7... Each lesson will begin with some broad learning objectives for each week of your new member program. Through reading the assigned Bonds of Sisterhood pages, working through the lessons in your axidbook, discussion during new member and chapter meetings, and working together, you will gain the answers to the learning objectives each week. Please feel free to ask questions if we miss something, if you don’t understand or if you want to know more! Lesson 1 Learning Objectives: • • • • • • Understand the format of the New Member Education Program, Bonds of Sisterhood and axidbook. Meet the chapter’s executive committee and new member education team. Review general Greek terminology and local campus Greek information. Review chapter’s calendar of events for the semester. Receive copies of chapter Code of Conduct, Merit System, Bylaws and other local policy. Understand chapter’s academic program Let’s start the lesson…turn to page 8. The Alpha Xi Delta experience is what you make of it and to do that well, we need to know a little more about our program and each other. Explain the New Member Program, Bonds of Sisterhood, and axidbook Our new member program is to teach you the basics of Alpha Xi Delta so that you will better understand the ties you are forming. Our chapter’s new member program is __________ weeks long. FACILITATOR NOTE – new member program must be 5 – 8 weeks long. Any exceptions must be cleared through your Area Facilitator. You have two tools to help guide you through the new member program: 1. The Bonds of Sisterhood is your book of Alpha Xi Delta history, facts and information. Each weekly lesson will have a short reading assignment from The Bonds of Sisterhood to learn information pertinent to the week’s lesson 2. Axidbook is your new member workbook that reinforces the principles, teachings and information shared in The Bonds of Sisterhood. 7 I Want to Learn…I Can Share One of the benefits of Alpha Xi Delta is learning from others and sharing your talents. Every sister has things they do well and things they need to improve. Please take a few minutes to complete the worksheet on page 8 of your axidbook. Under “I Want Learn” write 3-5 things that you want to improve on personally or learn from your sisters. Under “I Can Share” write 3-5 talents or strengths that you have that you want to share with your sisters. Reconvene the group. Who would like to share some of the things you wrote or read? (If no one volunteers, select someone to start). DISCUSSION – What were some common things that people want to learn? Did anything surprise you? Did you find a sister that has a strength you can learn from? Did you find a sister that wants to learn something you could help her with? This exercise is to show you how strong we are when we work as a group…as a sisterhood. An important part of sisterhood is teamwork. We have to rely on our strengths and not be afraid to share them with others. We also have to seek out those who can assist us with the things they want to learn. Before we leave this page, be sure to read Betxi Bear’s wall post to you. Betxi is Alpha Xi Delta’s official mascot! Group Reading Turn to page 46 in your Bonds of Sisterhood book. Let’s learn a little about the Greek community by taking a few minutes to read pages 46-48 and page 52. Reconvene the group. See…being Greek is far reaching and has it’s own language and rules that we all share. Turn to page 9 and let’s look at the “Check Out my Greek Alphabet” application. APPLICATION FACILITATOR NOTE – Go through the Greek Alphabet with the group…a great way to help reinforce the alphabet is to teach them the Greek Alphabet song! In addition to teaching the alphabet, give the New Members a list of the other fraternities and sororities on your campus. Other helpful information is a campus map with the location of all of the Greek houses if appropriate. 8 Chapter Information Now that we have learned some general Greek information, let’s learn a little about your Alpha Xi Delta Chapter! Turn to page 10… Who would like to read the IM from our AΞΔ Founders? (If no one volunteers, select someone to read.) Let’s meet our chapter’s executive committee! FACILITATOR NOTE Have members of the executive committee come in to the meeting, introduce themselves in person and explain a little about their office. Then help new members fill in the rest of the information on page 10. Academic Information Who remembers the four core purposes we talked about in the Overview lesson? Look for sisterhood, knowledge, leadership and service as the answer. One of the 4 core pieces of Alpha Xi Delta is KNOWLEDGE. Knowledge means a lot of things to us, but the foundation and reason for being here in college is to gain a broad education. Your sisters are here to support you and help through your college experience so let’s turn to page 11 and discuss our national and chapter academic program! 9 READ THE ALPHA XI DELTA ACADEMIC CREED TO THE GROUP: Alpha Xi Delta believes that education is the process of learning from all of life’s experiences, including learning associated with formal studies and learning that comes from associating with others. We believe that our members, new and initiated, have an obligation to themselves, their parents, and their schools to derive the greatest benefit from the educational opportunities offered. Further, Alpha Xi Delta believes its members have responsibility to the chapter and National Fraternity to develop their abilities to the highest degree so that they will become better persons and be prepared to make worthy contributions to society. In this light, Alpha Xi Delta expects each member to make academic success her primary goal during her college years. To help collegiate members reach this goal, we provide to the chapters an academic achievement program that can be implemented by each chapter. Now let’s take a look at some important information that will help you fill in the blanks on page 11. 1. Individual chapter members must maintain cumulative 2.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale. 2. You must also have a _______GPA to be a chapter officer and maintain it to remain in office. FACILITATOR NOTE: Fill in the requirement for your chapter – remember it must be at least a 2.5 but your chapter may have a higher requirement in their bylaws. 3. The chapter as a whole must maintain the all women’s average, the Panhellenic average or a 2.5 on a 4.0 scale, whichever is lower. 4. Give copies of each of them to the new members and give them a week to review them. Follow up at the next meeting and answer any questions they have. Don’t entertain a lot of discussion about the documents at this point – really encourage them to read them and ask questions the next week. 10 NATIONAL CONSTITUTION AND BYLAWS The National Constitution and Bylaws (C&B) are the governing documents of Alpha Xi Delta’s national organization. All entities, whether collegiate or alumnae, are bound by the rules, regulations, policies, procedures and guidance set forth in the C&B. No local chapter policy can contradict or supersede the C&B. The C&B are reviewed and amended as appropriate every two years at the national chapter meeting held at national convention. CARE MANUAL CARE stands for Communication * Action * Responsibility* Education. Alpha Xi Delta cares about the health and well‐being of our members. That’s why we strive to provide you with education and guidance so that you can make informed decisions about risk management issues. The CARE manual outlines national risk management policies and how to handle emergency situations in the chapter. All members are responsible for knowing and following national risk management policy and local chapters can never contradict or supersede national risk management policy. CHAPTER BYLAWS Each collegiate chapter writes specific rules, regulations, policies, procedures and guidance for their individual chapters called chapter bylaws. All members of the chapter are responsible for adhering to the chapter bylaws because they are the structure of the local chapter. Chapter bylaws can never contradict or supersede national C&B. MERIT SYSTEM Part of being a member of Alpha Xi Delta is being an ACTIVE member. Each chapter creates and enforces a merit system that explains what events members are expected to attend by giving various activities point values called merit points. To remain in good standing, members are expected to meet the merit point requirements of their individual chapter. CHAPTER CODE OF CONDUCT Each collegiate chapter writes a specific code of conduct that details how chapter members are to conduct themselves as members of our organization. It is tied to the CARE Manual and is the local chapter’s guidance of what behavior is safe and appropriate for Alpha Xi Delta members. Chapter codes of conduct can never contradict or supersede the CARE Manual or national risk management policy. HOUSING CORPORATION AGREEMENTS Housing Corporations govern local chapter housing and set the rules and guidelines for chapter housing facilities in accordance with national policy. Members who live 11 both in and out of the chapter house are required to sign housing corporation agreements, which outline each member’s housing responsibilities. (If no one volunteers, select someone to read.) In order to best utilize our own uniqueness like our quote states, we have to know ourselves better. This week we have two activities that will show us how to realize our potential in all four core areas of Alpha Xi Delta – sisterhood, leadership, knowledge and service! Let’s get started! Turn to page 41… Lesson 6 Learning Objectives: • • • • Learn yourself and how you can contribute to Alpha Xi Delta Understand the importance of realizing your potential to Alpha Xi Delta Understand the servant leadership philosophy Assess your servant leadership characteristics Strengths Assessment FACILITATOR NOTE – There are two options for this section. Option One is to complete the StrengthsQuest assessment that costs $15/member to complete. If you chapter has budgeted for this assessment, please do the follow up program located in the Blue Room here. Option Two is to complete the Realize Your Potential Program in the RYP Manual titled Holland’s Personality Typology on page 41. The RYP Manual is located in the Blue Room. USE A STRONG PRESENTER FOR EITHER OF THESE TOPICS – AN ALUMNA OR ADVISOR WOULD BE A GREAT FACILITATOR. Servant Leadership Turn to page 42… If our Founders were around today, they would strongly relate to the concept of servant leadership so let’s learn about what it is and how it helps us realize our potential! What is servant leadership? It is based on the idea that true leadership should call us to serve a higher purpose, something beyond ourselves. So that means servant leaders have a natural desire to serve first, then lead and to make a difference in the lives of others. They are willing to sacrifice self‐interests for the sake of others. There are ten characteristics of servant leaders. I will go through what each of them are one at a time and after I define each one, write an example of how Alpha Xi Delta relates to that characteristic… FACILITATOR NOTE – Read one characteristic then allow a few minutes for the new members to write in their axidbook, before you go on to the next. 25 1. Listening – People want leaders who will listen and empower them. It is being receptive and genuinely interested in the views of others. It makes others want to share their ideas because they are valued. 2. Empathy – This is the ability to understand others’ circumstances and problems. People are confident in those who are empathetic because they feel that their leader can understand whatever problems may arise and care enough to help solve them. 3. Healing – It is important to have an appreciation for the emotional health and spirit of others. Healing means having the ability to create an environment that encourages emotional mending and being approachable to those that are struggling. 4. Awareness – People that are aware have a keen sense for what is happening around them and look for cues from their environment to make informed decisions and form opinions. 5. Persuasion – Persuasion is seeking to convince others to do things rather than relying on your authority or a title. It’s offering compelling reasons for why you are making requests rather than forcing others to do things. 6. Conceptualization – Conceptualization is encouraging others to dream great dreams and look at a broad picture of the world. It is fostering an environment that encourages thinking big and valuing the creative process. 7. Foresight – Having foresight means being able to anticipate future events and consequences of decisions with great accuracy. 8. Stewardship – People who are strong stewards have a desire to prepare the organization to contribute to the greater good of society and make a positive difference. 9. Growth – This trait means having a strong commitment to the growth of people and believing that all people have something to offer spiritually, professionally and personally. 10. Building Community – A strong sense of community is important and even more important is fostering it! People who have this trait instill a sense of community spirit and work hard to build the community around them. Who would like to share what you wrote for Listening? (If no one volunteers, select someone. Repeat this process for each characteristic having one member speak to each one.) Now turn to page 43. Read the instructions and answer the questions about servant leadership. Give members a few minutes to work through the questions. 26 How many of you checked at least three? Five? Seven? If you check seven or more of these questions, you are well on your way to becoming a strong servant leader! Parting Thoughts for Lesson Six Take 10‐15 minutes to read the questions on page 44 and reflect on realizing your potential. Answer them honestly and thoughtfully – these will not be shared unless you choose to talk to your sisters about them. Reconvene the group.
