The Rolex 24 At Daytona Timeline
1960s
1962: Dan Gurney captured the inaugural running of the Rolex 24 At Daytona back in 1962, which
was a three-hour race known as the Daytona Continental. The Californian held a one minute, 40second lead in the final moments of the race when the engine blew. In order to win the race, Gurney
realized he would have to cross the finish line after time expired. If he crossed the line before the
three hours were up, he would have to run another lap, which he was unable to do. Gurney waited
on the high groove of the 18-degree banked tri-oval and when the watch struck three hours, he
coasted the final five feet to take the checkered flag and the win.
1963: Mexican racing star Pedro Rodriguez won behind the wheel of Luigi Chinetti’s North
American Racing Team (NART) Ferrari 250, the first win for the Italian manufacturer at the “World
Center of Racing.” The finish came down to a matter of seconds. Rodriguez had to make a late
unscheduled pit stop for fuel and took the checkered flag by 64 seconds ahead of Roger Penske,
whose team protested the finish claiming Rodriguez’s pit stop was illegal because the driver failed
to get out of the car. The protest was upheld and Rodriguez was penalized 50 seconds, which still
gave him a 14-second official margin of victory.
1964: With the distance changed from three hours to 2,000 kilometers (1,243 miles), Luigi
Chinetti’s North American Racing Team and the Ferrari 250 GTO 64 driven by Pedro Rodriguez
and Phil Hill claimed the victory, completing 327 laps in 12 hours, 40 minutes and 25 seconds with
an average speed of 98.199 mph. It was the second straight win for Rodriguez while Hill became
the first driver to win at all three classic endurance venues – LeMans, Sebring and Daytona.
1965: Ken Miles and Lloyd Ruby claimed Ford’s first major international triumph with a winning
margin of five laps. Miles and Ruby averaged 99.849 mph and needed 12 hours, 27 minutes to
cover the 2,000 kilometers.
1966: Ken Miles and Lloyd Ruby won Daytona’s first 24-hour race and delivered Ford its second
consecutive victory.
1967: In the war between Ferrari and Ford, Ferrari ended Ford’s
two-year win streak with drivers Lorenzo Bandini and Chris
Amon bringing home the victory in the Ferrari 330 P4.
1968: The No. 54 Porsche 907 driven by Vic Elford of England,
Hans Herrmann, Jochen Neerpasch and Rolf Stommelen of
Germany, and Jo Siffert of Switzerland captured the 1968 Rolex
24 – the first of Porsche’s record 22 overall wins in the
prestigious sports car race.
The No. 54 Porsche 907, the winner
of the 1968 Rolex 24.
1969: Mark Donohue and Chuck Parsons drove the No. 6 Lola T70 Chevrolet owned by Roger
Penske to victory. The triumph was the first for Chevrolet in an international endurance race and
also the first time Penske celebrated a win at Daytona International Speedway.
1970s
1970: The John Wyer Gulf Porsche 917Ks swept the top two spots with Pedro Rodriguez, Leo
Kinnunen and Brian Redman taking the victory and Redman and Jo Siffert coming home in second.
Redman filled in for a stint on the winning car so he had the unusual distinction of driving both the
first and second place machines. Legendary Italian racer Gianpiero Moretti would make his first
start in the Rolex 24 in a Ferrari but would need close to 30 years before finally winning the overall
crown in 1998.
1971: Sports car legend Hurley Haywood made his first start in the Rolex 24 driving the No. 59
Porsche 914 with Peter Gregg. Haywood, who owns a record five Rolex 24s, started 23rd and
finished 29th.

The Rolex 24 At Daytona Timeline
1972: Mario Andretti and Jacky Ickx drove the Ferrari 312PB to victory in the Rolex 24 At
Daytona, which was shortened to six hours at the request of the FIA. Andretti and Ickx were able to
win despite losing a cylinder, which took away about 14 mph on the track. Ickx was able to take the
lead and the victory with five laps to go when he passed Tim Schenken’s Ferrari 312PB.
1973: Hurley Haywood and Peter Gregg of Brumos Racing score their first overall victory in the
prestigious sports car race and the first victory for the 911-based Porsche in international
competition.
1975: With the 1974 Rolex 24 canceled due to the gasoline
crisis, Hurley Haywood and Peter Gregg returned in 1975 to
defend their victory, and despite a wide variety of minor
problems, captured their second straight twice-around-the-clock
challenge win in the No. 59 Brumos Porsche. They completed
684 laps, 2,606 miles with an average speed of 108.531 mph.

Fitzpatrick, a teammate on the sister No. 2 BMW car, to pick up
a shift. The race is also remembered for a long red flag due to tainted fuel.
1977: The older No. 43 Porsche Carrera 911 RSR with drivers Hurley Haywood, Dave Helmick and
John Graves came out ahead of the new turbocharged Porsche 935s for the victory, which was
highlighted by an incredible eight-hour nighttime driving stint by Haywood. The race also featured
actor Paul Newman’s first Rolex 24 start. Newman joined Elliott Forbes-Robinson and Milt Minter
in the fifth-place Ferrari Daytona.
1978: The Brumos Porsche twin-turbo 935 driven by Rolf Stommelen, Antoine Hezemans and Peter
Gregg won in dominating fashion. The No. 99 car took home the overall win by a margin of 30 laps
with an average speed of 108.743 mph while Porsche swept the top seven positions – and 14 of the
top 15 positions. Gregg, one of the most successful racers in the Rolex 24, celebrated his fourth and
final triumph in the twice-around-the-clock challenge.
1979: Hurley Haywood scored his fourth overall Rolex 24 win in the Interscope Porsche with
Danny Ongais and Ted Field. The team’s patience and conservative pace early in the race paid off
and they won by a dominating margin of 49 laps. Despite a near-perfect race, the turbocharger on
the car failed with 10 minutes remaining. Similar to Dan Gurney’s 1962 inaugural win, Ongais
parked the car on the apron and waited for the 24 hours to expire and then slowly crossed the finish
line to take the checkered flag.
1980s
1980: The Joest Porsche 935 with German drivers Reinhold Joest, Rolf Stommelen and Volkert
Merl captured the 1980 Rolex 24 by 33 laps over the Preston Henn Porsche 935 of John Paul Sr., Al
Holbert and Henn. The Joest entry completed 715 laps, 2,745 miles and averaged 114.303 mph to
shatter the year-old mark by more than five mph.
1981: The No. 9 Bob Garretson’s Style Auto Porsche 935 with Brian Redman, Bobby Rahal and
Garretson used a steady pace to capture the twice-around-the-clock challenge. Under the direction
of Redman, the No. 9 Porsche 935 ran a conservative pace in the 1981 event and avoided the
turbocharger problems that claimed many of the other top contenders. The car won by a margin of
13 laps and covered 708 laps, 2,718.72 miles with an average speed of 113.153 mph.
1982: The father-son pair of John Paul Sr. and Jr. and Rolf Stommelen ran a flawless race on their
way to the overall victory with the No. 18 JLP Porsche 935. The trio won by 11 laps, completing
719 laps, 2,760.96 miles and averaging 114.794 mph. “We had absolutely no problems at all”, Paul

Jr said. “We never added oil to it, never even opened the hood.” For the 21-year-old Paul Jr., it was
his first time racing in the Rolex 24. He was entered the previous year with his father, but their
Porsche 935 dropped out of the race before it was his turn to drive.
1983: A.J. Foyt, co-driving an Aston-Martin Nimrod, was recruited by Preston Henn mid-race after
Foyt’s car broke down. Foyt joined Bob Wollek, Claude Ballot-Lana and Henn in the No. 6 Swap
Shop Porsche 935. The Texan increased the team’s lead from one to two laps, and later drove the
fastest lap of the race – 126 mph in the rain – during a four hour, 10-minute shift. The victory was
the final Daytona triumph for the Porsche 935. Following the race, Foyt returned to his ailing
father’s side and presented him with the trophy.
1984: Mario Andretti, who co-drove with his son Michael, won the pole for the 1984 Rolex 24 in
the debut of the Porsche 962. Andretti posted a lap of 125.526 mph. However, the car wasn’t ready
for the grueling 24-hour race retiring with transmission problems after completing only 207 laps.
Graham Duxbury, Tony Martin and Sarel van der Merwe in the Kreepy Krauly Porsche claimed the
overall win.
1985: A.J. Foyt earned his second Rolex 24 At Daytona overall win with Bob Wollek and Al Unser
in Preston Henn’s Porsche 962. With both drivers fighting the flu, Foyt and Wollek came from
behind in the final two hours to win over the No. 14 Lowenbrau Porsche 962 of Al Holbert, Derek
Bell and Al Unser Jr., which had issues replacing a voltage box.
1986: Al Holbert, Derek Bell, and Al Unser Jr. in the No. 14 Lowenbrau Porsche 962 claimed the
1986 Rolex 24 by a margin of one minute, 49 seconds over the Preston Henn Porsche, the first time
in event history that the top two cars finished on the lead lap.
1987: The No. 14 Lowenbrau Porsche 962 pulled off the repeat
with Derek Bell, Chip Robinson, Al Unser Jr. and Al Holbert
once again outlasting A.J. Foyt’s Porsche 962. Holbert had his
name on the driver’s list but planned on only serving as the
team’s manager. But after the car lost the driver’s side window,
drivers were exhausted by the hot air that was blowing into the
car and Holbert quickly grabbed his helmet and took a turn at the
wheel. The team completed 753 laps, 2,680.68 miles and
averaged a record 111.499 mph.
The No. 14 Lowenbrau Porsche 962
pulled off consecutive Rolex 24 wins
in 1986 and 1987.
1988: Porsche’s streak of 11 consecutive victories in the Rolex 24 came to an end as the Tom
Walkinshaw Racing No. 60 Castrol Jaguar XJR-9 of Raul Boesel, Martin Brundle, John Neilsen and
Jan Lammers delivered Jaguar’s first 24-hour race victory since the 1957 Le Mans event. Late in the
race, Lammers drove a pivotal two-hour stint and the No. 60 Jaguar exchanged the lead eight times
with the Jim Busby Porsche before winning by one minute, 54 seconds. Notable drivers making
their first Rolex 24 starts were Wayne Taylor and Butch Leitzinger.
1989: The Rolex 24 turned into the Rolex 20 when fog blanketed the race track around midnight.
The fog brought out the red flag and stopped racing for about four hours (though the clock kept
running). Bob Wollek, who shared driving duties on the No. 67 Porsche 962 with Derek Bell and
John Andretti, topped the No. 61 Jaguar in the final hour of the race to win by a margin of one
minute, 26.665 – the closest finish to date in event history.
1990s
1990: The Tom Walkinshaw Racing Castrol Jaguars pulled off the 1-2 finish in the 1990 Rolex 24.
Taking overall honors by a margin of four laps was the No. 61 Jaguar XJR-12 and drivers Davy
Jones, Jan Lammers and Andy Wallace. Completing the sweep in second place was the No. 60
Jaguar XJR-12 and drivers Price Cobb, John Nielsen and Martin Brundle.

The Rolex 24 At Daytona Timeline
1991: Hurley Haywood won his record fifth Rolex 24 At Daytona with Bob Wollek, Henri
Pescarolo, Frank Jelinski and John Winter in the No. 7 Blaupunkt Porsche 962, a joint effort
between Joest and Brumos teams. It was also the final triumph for the Porsche 962 at Daytona.
1992: The Nissan Motorsports No. 23 R91CP took a nine-lap victory with drivers Masahiro
Hasemi, Kazuyoshi Hoshino and Toshio Suzuki. The car set a blistering pace and covered 762 laps,
2,712.72 miles and averaged a speed of 112.897. It was the first 24-hour victory for Nissan.
1993: Dan Gurney’s All American Racers won with the No. 98 Eagle GTP car driven by P.J. Jones,
Rocky Moran and Mark Dismore. The team regained the lead for the final time in the race with 96
minutes left and completed 698 laps, 2,484.88 miles, averaging 103.503 mph. In addition to the
victory, the No. 98 car remains in the record books today with Jones’ record-breaking pole-winning
lap of 136.520 mph, which is the all-time fastest lap by a sports car at Daytona.
1994: Scott Pruett captured his first overall Rolex 24 victory driving the No. 76 Clayton
Cunningham Nissan 300 ZXT with Paul Gentilozzi, Steve Millen and Butch Leitzinger. The car
completed 707 laps and led all but 111 circuits, including the final 427. The margin of victory was
24 laps.
1995: To celebrate Academy Award-winning actor Paul Newman’s 70th birthday, Paramount
Studios had Jack Roush prepare a Ford Mustang for the 1995 Rolex 24. Carrying the No. 70
promoting Newman’s upcoming film Nobody’s Fool, Newman, Michael Brockman, Mark Martin
and Tommy Kendall drove to a GTS-1-class win and third-place overall, eight laps behind the
overall winners Jurgen Lassig, Christophe Bouchut and Giovanni Lavaggi in the Kremer Porsche
K8 Spyder.
1996: “Mad Max” Papis earned the nickname with a late-race charge in the No. 30 Momo Ferrari
333SP to finish second behind the Doyle Racing Olds Aurora-powered Danka/Konica Riley & Scott
Mk III with drivers Wayne Taylor, Scott Sharp and Jim Pace. Papis was chipping away six seconds
per lap from the leader in the final hour but ran out of time and finished 65.518 seconds behind
Taylor, which was the closest Rolex 24 finish to date.
1997: Rob Dyson captured his first Rolex 24 triumph as an owner with the No. 20 Ford Riley &
Scott and drivers Elliott Forbes-Robinson, John Schneider, Dyson, John Paul Jr., Butch Leitzinger,
James Weaver and Andy Wallace. Bringing a different type of star power to the race, Tim Allen
from the hit comedy show Home Improvement raced in a Saleen Mustang SR.
1998: On his 15th attempt, Gianpiero Moretti finally won the
Rolex 24 with the Ferrari 333SP and co-drivers Mauro Baldi,
Didier Theys and Arie Luyendyk. The 57-year-old Italian driver
who first raced the Rolex 24 back in 1970 said after the race: “I
love Daytona – but Daytona, she doesn’t like me. I try again, I
try again – what the heck – today, I finally did it.”
1999: The Rolex 24 came down to a battle between the Dyson
Fords and three Ferraris. The No. 20 Dyson Racing Ford Riley

Robinson, Butch Leitzinger and Andy Wallace. The key to the
victory was Wallace and his selection of dry or wet tires in the closing portion of the race where the
weather conditions were constantly changing.
2000s and beyond
2000: With many of the SportsRacer Prototypes experiencing mechanical trouble, the finish of the
2000 Rolex 24 came down to the GTO entries of the Vipers and Corvettes. Olivier Beretta, Karl
Wendlinger and Dominique Dupuy in the Oreca Viper took the checkered flag only 30.878 seconds
ahead of the Corvette of Ron Fellows, Justin Bell and Chris Kneifel, the closest finish to date in the
Rolex 24. The race also marked the first event sanctioned by the new Grand American Road Racing
Association.
