"Director of Athletics, UC Berkeley" Aug 17 2011 Elliot Schrage "Marketing and Public Policy for Facebook" Aug 24 2011 Arley C. Marley, District 5170 Governor "District 5170 " Aug 31 2011 Carl Guardino "Projections, SVLG" The four Cosentino brothers who took over management after the retirement of their father, divided supermarket responsibilities, and Phil's responsibility was always produce -- which explains why Cosentino's Market is so well known for its fruits and vegetables. For years before his own retirement, Phil would tumble out of bed at 2am and drive the Cosentino truck to the markets in San Francisco and Oakland. He can be heard on weekdays on Radio Station KLIV, where he talks about current crops, shamelessly promotes California produce (over that from other states) and gives frequent voice to his theory that consumers are too concerned about the cosmetics of produce, rather than their taste. This will not be Phil Cosentino's first visit to Rotary. Over the years, he has presented several programs -- programs that consist of his talking about fruits and vegetables both common and rare -- with a bonus at the end of each of his presentations. You'll enjoy the bonus as well as the talk. Kaval negotiated a number of major corporate partnerships, including a naming rights agreement with Safeway. Under Kaval’s leadership, the league turned an operating profit in multiple years. Then President Shirley discussed her goals and plans for the coming year: · Rotary International’s theme for the year is Reach Within to Embrace Humanity. The first was the induction of DAVID KAVAL, President of the San Jose Earthquakes. With sponsor DON GAGLIARDI at this side, Mr. Kaval was presented to the club as President Shirley read an impressive commitment pledge to which he agreed to abide. She then read her first Rotary Spotlight of club Sargeant at Arms, JIM HUMMEL, who diligently arrives to the Summit Center at 9:30 a.m. each Wednesday to set the room up and has benefited our club with his artistic talents. President Shirley then introduced our speaker, JEAN ERWIN. Ms. Erwin is a retired teacher of the deaf from the Washoe County School District in Reno, Nevada. Ms. Erwin was a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar in 1989 and speaks to many Rotary groups about her study abroad and the long term benefits of Rotary’s investment in the Ambassadors program which promotes crosscultural understanding and world peace. The Ambassadorial Scholarship Jean received allowed her to do research into reading and deafness in Nottingham, England. She informed us that the majority of deaf student read at a 4th grade level in high school. She described the challenges of our current system for developing child’s literacy, the famous sound-it-out technique, does not work with deaf students who do have some level of residual hearing but hear instructions in a muffled tone. She showed a remarkable video of Teddy, a student of hers, who shows remarkable improvement in his ability to read and converse. His casual and comfortable communication style belied his deafness. In fact, 80% of her students graduate from high school reading at the 10th grade level and continue on to college. After this education, her students broke what is considered a glass ceiling for the deaf and achieved high levels of reading. She is now District 5190's Literacy Chair and wants to use what she learned about Reading to help encourage and foster more literacy involvement from clubs. Ms. Erwin is a member of the Rotary Club of Reno Centennial Sunset and is a multiple Paul Harris Fellow. In 2009, she received the "Service Above Self" award from Rotary International. She has spoken to over 200 conferences for both Rotarians and teachers of the deaf about what she learned as an Ambassadorial Scholar. She also actively promotes the idea that while eradicating polio is a remarkable commitment, she suggested that RI’s next big goal be to address the promotion of world peace (through literacy?) in a globally focused way as we have in our fight against polio. Ms. Erwin’s presentation was both humorous and poignant; she kept the audience interested, developed our understanding of the tremendous gains that can be made to raise levels of literacy amongst the deaf, and posed an thought-provoking question about where RI should focus its next major area of commitment.
