the 16-mile-long island in 1693. Now it’s your turn to explore florida’s “Lost

“Lost Key”
Siguenza, a Spanish explorer,
found himself on Perdido Key
quite by accident in 1693 when
a storm blew his ship off course.
fortunately, a friendly Indian
chief spotted the vessel and
guided it to safe harbor. That’s
how Siguenza, a cartographer
and scientist, “found” Perdido
Key, which is Spanish for “Lost
Island.”
Today, much of the island is
remarkably similar to the way
it was back in 1693. Nature has
helped shape and reshape the
barrier island, which extends
some 16 miles between the Gulf
of Mexico and the Intracoastal
Waterway.
Tucked nicely between florida
and Alabama, Perdido Key
escaped the early explosion of
beach development and was
largely left to appreciative locals,
who enjoyed its remoteness—
and the fishing, swimming and
squeaky white sand.
To give you an idea of the real
estate market of yesteryear,
historian Sunny David recounted
a 1925 brochure that listed 10
acres of waterfront property for
sale for $32,000 – home included!

blue Angel Parkway (SR173). Take a right turn on
blue Angel Parkway. Travel
approximately 15 minutes
to Sorrento Road (SR-292)
and turn right. Sorrento
Road becomes Perdido
Key Drive at
the Theo baars bridge, but
remains SR-292.

Take exit 69 off I-65 onto
Alabama SR-113 and
follow to where the road
dead-ends. Turn right onto
SR-31 toward flomaton. At
flomaton, turn left (south)
onto florida SR-29 and

Mile Road and travel to Pine
forest Road. Turn left (south)

travel to the traffic light at
blue Angel Parkway. Travel

you might be itching to

you’ll probably wish you
were wearing running shoes
or flip flops once you get
here. The same goes for
other clothing. Lightweight
linen and cotton are always
appropriate on the Key!

Whether you prefer
saltwater or freshwater
fishing, there are plenty
of choices on Perdido
Key.
The beaches along the barrier
island provide the perfect launch
site for casting a line. Or, you
can set out in search of a more
challenging catch–cobia, mullet,
mackerel or redfish, to name a
few—from a charter boat, where
everything you’ll need is provided,
even the fishing license.
Visiting anglers will have plenty
of fishing spots to choose from.
Perdido Key hosts several fishing
competitions throughout the year.
Check the events calendar at

tournaments, or enjoy a quiet day
fishing from a kayak or canoe,
which will give you access to areas
that a larger boat can’t reach.

The 2015 blue Angels schedule includes 36 official air shows in the U.S., including
two shows in the Perdido Key area, one over Pensacola beach on July 11 and the
second at Pensacola Naval Air Station on Nov. 7-8.
Perdido Key is just a few miles from NAS Pensacola, where the blues perform practice shows twice a week at
11:30 am during flight season. And on Wednesday mornings after the practice, from March through November,
visitors can meet the pilots, take photos with them and even ask for their autographs at the National Naval
Aviation Museum. Also at the museum, visitors can visit the blue Angels atrium to have their photos taken with
real blue Angels aircraft, positioned in flying formation.
On practice days you can watch the six f/A-18 jets slicing gracefully through the air at speeds up to 700 mph
and see the breathtaking maneuvers—a vertical roll as high as 15,000 feet, a “sneak pass” performed at a
ground-skimming 50 feet, and a Diamond 360 done with the aircraft a mere 18 inches apart!
The blue Angels team, named after a New york nightclub, was formed after World War II to remind people of
Naval and Marine aviation, to encourage them to enlist and to boost the morale of current service members.
An estimated 15 million people attend their shows each year!

The Pensacola Naval Air Station
currently employs almost 24,000
personnel (16,000 military and
7,400 civilian). The area includes
Naval Air Schools Command,
NETC headquarters, a center that
combines Navy education and
training, and the world-famous blue
Angels Navy flight Demonstration
Squadron.
NAS Pensacola is also home to the
National Naval Aviation Museum.
The world’s largest naval aviation
museum features more than 150
restored military planes, helicopters
and other aircraft, the IMAX
National Aviation Memorial Theater;
and flight simulators. Admission is
free and the museum is open every
day from 9 am to 5 pm.
from March to November, visitors
can catch the blue Angels taking
to the sky over the museum during
their Tuesday and Wednesday
morning practices at 11:30.
Practices are free and open to the
public, and the pilots almost always
greet fans and sign autographs
on practice Wednesdays in the
museum.
Also on NAS is fort barrancas, a fully
walkable United States military fort
and National historic Landmark.

Beaches
Visitors will find plenty to do on Perdido Key shores,
which are ranked among the nation’s top 20 beaches.
year after year, loyal visitors return to Perdido Key and the
number one reason is our amazing beaches. With National
Park, State Park and County accesses, you will find plenty
of beaches with public parking and restroom facilities. The
favorite local beach, Johnson beach, is the only Perdido
Key beach which is staffed with a lifeguard in the summer.
Johnson beach, part of the Gulf Islands National Seashore,
is named after Private Rosamond Johnson, Jr., who was
the first Escambia County resident to be killed during the
Korean Conflict in 1950.

The Perdido Key State Park consists of almost 300 acres of
beach and has access points just to the East and West of
the Visitors Center on Perdido Key Drive.

More than 60 percent of Perdido Key
is comprised of state and national
parks, preserved forever for public use.
The 16-mile-long barrier island’s
wetlands, woods, beaches and
waterways serve as protective
environments for a number of
endangered animals and plants,
including the Perdido Key beach
Mouse, sea turtles and the
carnivorous pitcher plant. hidden
along the Key are prime spots for
camping, birding, hiking, biking,
kayaking and, well, just relaxing.
They’re all part of the federal and
state parks, which protect nature
and limit development of our
coastal community.
Gulf Islands National Seashore
has access to both the Gulf
of Mexico and big Lagoon. Its
popular boardwalk trail includes
the family-friendly Johnson beach

mile trail will take you and your
children through the dunes and
up to a beautiful view of the
lagoon. On Rosamond Johnson
beach, the sand has been called
some of the whitest and most
beautiful in the nation. It’s also
one of the best spots on the Key
for collecting sea shells.
Tarkiln bayou State Park is home
to more than 100 rare plants
and animals, plus four species of
carnivorous pitcher plants that
populate the bayou. Tarkiln has
three trails covering eight miles
of the bayou. The longest, the
Perdido Trail, ambles 6.5 miles
round-trip along a dirt road. At the
trailhead there are restrooms and
picnic tables.

Although no dogs are allowed on Escambia County beaches, there are several
places in the Perdido Key area that your furry friend will love.
Most parks will allow dogs on the trails as long as they are on a leash. Pet friendly accommodations are

Pet friendly restaurants in the Perdido Key area include: hub Stacey’s, Sunset Grille, florabama yacht
Club and The Rib Shak. The closest dog beaches are in Pensacola beach which has two dog parks.
The west end park is located at the first parking lot past the last condos on the Gulf. The east end park

The most popular underwater destinations include five ships
wrecked near Perdido Key, ranging from the world’s largest
artificial reef—a former Navy aircraft carrier, the USS Oriskany—
to a barge and a fruit freighter.
The sunken vessels are part of the Panhandle Shipwreck Trail
(floridapanhandledivetrail.com), which includes 12 shipwrecks
scattered across North florida from Pensacola to Port St. Joe.
The historic shipwrecks, which are protected by law, attract a
range of marine life and pose varying degrees of difficulty for
divers. Perdido Key also offers new snorkeling adventures of our
expansive reef.

Over the past 60 years, the Pensacola
Museum of Art (PMA) has presented hundreds
of exhibitions and thousands of educational
opportunities, becoming a staple for the
visual arts in our community. The museum’s
permanent collection comprises 19th and
20th century works by Alexander Calder,
Andy Warhol, Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali
and many more. PMA offers a wide range

The Pensacola Children’s Museum is

Mainline Art house was founded in May
2013 to fill a void in the arts community
of Pensacola. Owners Jason and Mikel
Traffanstead, saw a lack of a true commercial
gallery, specifically one focused on modern
local art. Mainline Art house seeks to connect

Located in the historic District of Pensacola,
Quayside Art Gallery is one of the oldest and
largest member-owned art galleries in the
US. Quayside is dedicated to fostering and

where there are lots of free and low-cost things to do all year round.
1. Explore the National Naval
Aviation Museum, where
hundreds of aircraft are on
display. Admission and tours are
free—and your tour guide might
even be a former pilot who flew
one of the aircraft on display.

home to a 403-gallon pirate ship
themed aquarium, designed by
the team of Animal Planet’s hit
show, “Tanked.”

14ft. long, 403-gallon, touch-screen educational exhibit
The aquarium features aquatic life,
including those indigenous to the Gulf
of Mexico, showcased in the theme of
a buccaneer party complete with sails
and a treasure chest. The exhibit includes
an interactive education component for
residents and tourists alike. The aquarium
was funded by a Tourism Promotional
Grant and maintenance sponsorships are
available.
Wayde King and brett Raymer
create over the top aquariums for fish
enthusiasts, using unique methods of
display for function and form. They have
created custom tanks at restaurants,
casinos, churches, museums, zoos and
more.
Stop in to see the fish tank anytime
and receive a free “I Saw The Pirate
Ship fish Tank” bumper sticker. Other

Review

The Perdido Key Area Chamber of
Commerce and Visitors Center will
be celebrating our 30th Anniversary
in 2015. Our primary goal now is
the same as it was then; promoting
Perdido Key and Escambia County
as a family-oriented vacation
destination and remaining active
with community involvement.
We have been in our new Visitors
Center just over one year now and
we operate it seven days a week.
This year, Destin Architect Group
won a Merit Award of Excellence
on the design of our Perdido Key
fire Station, Community Center
and Visitors Center building. We
have made many great strides in
2014 including increases in visitors,
members and tourism development
tax over last year. Marketing
tactics moving forward will include
increasing shoulder season,
international and winter visitors. We
got some great media coverage
this year by completing a four-year
project of incentivized travel with
a zero error audit. We also used
funding from a tourism promotional
grant to install a 403-gallon fish tank
which aired on Animal Planet’s
national TV show “TANKED” and has
increased our visitors already by
50%. We sponsored the florabamahosted Kenny Chesney beach
concert this summer and the
Perdido Key area received national
coverage via CMT. We hosted
and supported many festivals
and events this year, including our
Annual Rosamond Johnson Day,
which on the first Saturday each
May honors our local Korean War
Veteran for which our local beach
is named.
