INTRODUCTION
Almost daily, someone asks one or both of these questions – “why does Mont St. Joseph (MSJ)
Home need a Foundation? Doesn’t Government take care of Residents’ needs?” If you have ever
articulated those questions, it is one more reason to review this Report. It is our Foundation’s
effort to inform you of its commitments to the people living at MSJ Home. It provides the story
of why the Foundation exists, who it aspires to be and the opportunities for you to participate and
support the work of the Foundation.
The short answer to the questions above is simple. No, grants and resident fees set by
Government do NOT cover the costs related to operating special care homes that are tasked,
through legislation, to provide quality care and support services. Nor does funding from
Government cover upgrades to the Home’s infrastructure, equipment and furnishings required to
meet Residents’ needs. Without the Foundation, many things our Residents and families take for
granted would NOT be here. And, to be frank, the Foundation cannot do what it does without
you – and so many people like you – who recognize that more resources are required to meet
those needs – and then donates their time and hard-earned money accordingly.
During the past year, many people, groups and businesses donated generously. The Foundation’s
trustees and staff work with passion and commitment – and had fun doing it. As a “new” trustee
of the Foundation observed participating in ‘Special Care Home Week’ celebrations – “I never
knew how much fun it was serving coffee and visiting.” Those kinds of experiences are why we
dream to be “a welcoming Christian community giving life meaning.”

THE YEAR’S PROJECTS
The Foundation hosts five Projects that raise funds and/or create awareness about Mont St.
Joseph Home and our Residents’ collective needs. Each Project is unique and requires support
from the community to be successful. A common characteristic of these Projects is each has a
local business who has taken on a major sponsorship role. We urge you to support these
businesses. They cannot support us unless we support them!
The Spring Lottery
May 2012
This Lottery is an amazing success. And, quite frankly, how could it not? Our Committee
Chairperson, Jinus Makari and her committee Jack Lang & Vic Lemieux assemble a high quality
prize package highlighted by a two week Trip to Spain. How good is that?
Our Platinum Corporate Sponsor
is a local business who provides great
products and service to its
customers. Obviously, it is also a business
who leads by example- their support of the Foundation clearly illustrates their empathy for the
very aged and the disabled who live at MSJ Home.
We are thankful of our team of sponsors including Alex & Karla Dolaptchiev, Gary Anderson,
Asiil Enterprises Ltd., BMO Nesbitt Burns, Conexus Credit Union, Econo Lumber, Happy
Camper R.V., Lobstick Travel, Mak Homes, Petro Canada and Thorpe Brothers. These sponsors
donate this great prize package.
With appreciation, we thank every person who purchased a ticket. And, where would we be
without every person who made the effort to sell these tickets.
Neils Thomsen was our top ticket seller– over 80 books. Imagine.
Together, Sponsors, ticket sellers – and buyers - make a difference.
Grandparent’s Day & Stroll-a-Thon
September 9, 2012
We host Grandparents Day to create opportunities for family and friends of our Elders to
celebrate with their loved one(s), to generate awareness about the internationally declared
celebration called Grandparents Day and, of course, to raise monies for equipment, furnishings
and special needs required to provide care and support that our Residents need.
Econo Lumber is an active and visible supporter of the Home with its corporate Platinum
sponsorship of Grandparents Day & Stroll-a-thon. The reality is that this local business is visible
and active with our Foundation throughout the year.
In Memory of Adolphe & Helen Lemieux
Chairperson Janice Jacques along with Ron Bergen, Joan Byrne, Sheila Fazio, Vic Lemieux,
Glenn McMullen, Allison Nagy, Jennifer Rust and Doreen Wright organized and hosted a
GREAT fund-raiser and a day of joy, laughter and celebration for families and individuals. Over
400 people contributed to the ambience of this day.
Two Residents – Charlie Phelps and Isabelle LaHaye were declared ‘King’ and ‘Queen’ because
they and their families raised the most funds of all the Residents for this year’s event. Close
seconds – and thus this year’s prince and princesses – were Konrad Bardall, Walter Boyle, Bud
Fisher, Frances Jenner, Mary Remai and Geraldine Wallace. Thank-you to our “royalty” – and
thank-you to everyone who raised funds, had fun and created a day of fond memories for all.
Together, our Sponsors, Residents & families, staff and volunteers – and mischief makers –
make a difference.
Monty Mixed Funspiel Project
February 1 & 2, 2013
The Monty is the “Grandpa” of the Foundation’s fund-raising and public relations projects. In
every way, this Project illustrates the significance of “community” as people of all ages
participate and contribute to the ambience and fun of Monty.
We continue to be amazed at the individual and business support of this event. How often do
businesses ask to be involved in sponsorship?! That is the case with Monty. How exciting for
our Committee Chairperson Jacqui Wiesner and her hard working group of Karin Diehl-Ferris,
Morley Harrison, Shannon Meyers, Glenn McMullen, Guy Mounce, Tara Slonski, Anna
Stonechild & Shelley Turner. As well, a big thanks to the Prince Albert Golf & Curling Club.

our “Let’s Lift Together” Campaign.
Garden of Life Direct Mail Campaign
2012 Spring Campaign
This year’s campaign saw the number of donors grow, as did the amount raised. Together, our
platinum sponsor, Victoria Compounding Square and donors raised funds to create a “Garden of
Life” throughout our property and Home that is enjoyed by every person who lives, visits,
volunteers or works here.
Jack Lang – Asiil Enterprises Ltd. &
Foundation Board member. Donated a
beautiful bench in honour of his mom &
brother Edith & Donnie Lang to our Garden
of Life
Together, you and our local businesses make a difference with every donation – large or small.
“Deck The Halls”
November 16 & 17, 2012
Committee members Sheila Headrick, Lesley Larrea & Allison Nagy and TONS of community
volunteers. 1st annual event - $18,000 raised.
With the tremendous support of our community and generosity of the Kyla Artists MSJ
Foundation Board members made a decision to keep Deck the Halls as an annual Foundation
Project.
Tree of Love Direct Mail Campaign
2012 Winter Campaign
This year’s Tree of Love was overflowing with Christmas decorations
signifying great participation of so many people who honoured or remembered
special people in their lives.
Over $20,000 was raised in this year’s campaign. Some of the messages on
this year’s decorations remembered their Mom or Dad. Others thanked
volunteers and staff. Yet, others acknowledge a friend or ‘good neighbour.’
Together, honour or remember someone special in your life and help
make a difference for every person who lives at MSJ Home – today and
tomorrow!
GIVING PROGRAMS
Family and Friends:
The “Family and Friends” program is designed for donors to donate a specific amount every
month. Many people appreciate this type of giving opportunity because these smaller but regular
monthly contributions make a significant sum by year end. A charitable tax receipt is mailed in
January to support income tax planning time! This past year, this program generated over
$30,000 of donations from people who contributed $10 or more dollars a month. People who
support this Program are usually long time contributors who appreciate that their monthly
contribution grows into a significant total at year-end.
Planned Giving:
The “Planned Giving” program allows donors to plan for and include Mont St Joseph Home in
their wills and estates. We urge every person to contact their lawyer and/or financial planner
and/or accountant and make a planned gift to the many worthy causes that are in our community.
Hopefully, some of you may consider Mont St. Joseph Home. Everyone understands that the
people who live here are a worthy cause, without question!
In Memoriam:
The “In Memoriam” program allows donors to have their loved one’s name permanently
recorded. The person’s name is etched on our Donor Wall located beside the Holy Family
Chapel. Those we remember – and their donors - are also acknowledged in our Newsletter.
DONOR RECOGNITION
Because we are a registered charity, the Foundation is able to issue tax deductible charitable
receipts for charitable donations. We do so for any donation of $15 or more.
We use the Donor Wall located by the Holy Family Chapel to recognize people who
contribute financially. As your donations accumulate, you move from one category of
donors to the next. These categories include:

Closing Observations
There are many people to thank for their support of the MSJ Foundation and its worthy work. In
this Report, we will only mention one name – in essence to remember and honour a man who
found so many different ways to support the Home. Vern Denyer, who passed away, donated to
almost every one of the Foundation’s fund-raising efforts over the past decade. He quietly
acknowledged our appreciation by waving his hand and saying, “it’s no big deal. I know so many
who live here, so why wouldn’t I give?!” Folks, there are so many “Verns” out there. Truly, we
are blessed by every person who gives of their time and/or money to support the people who live
at MSJ Home. Without our donors, we cannot be a Foundation who makes a difference!
We have highlighted our Platinum sponsors. Every one of them are local businesses who go out
of their way, it seems, to support the people who live at MSJ Home. To our sponsors – “thankyou.” As you note them, you may recognize that these businesses support so many community
ventures and ‘worthy’ causes. We should be proud of – and thankful for them.
For every Resident and their family & friends who participates and supports the Foundation’s
efforts, it is such a joy to work with you. “Thank-you” for providing us the opportunity to serve.
Thank-you for spending time to support the person you love who now calls MSJ their home! The
reality is that none of us know who will live at MSJ Home tomorrow.
As you review this Report, you will note the names of our Board members, committee members
and volunteers who plan, organize and host various fund-raising activities. Where would the
Foundation be without this commitment of time, skills and energy? To each and every one of
you, “thank-you.” The Foundation could not do what it does without your leadership and hard
work.
Where would the Foundation (and our Residents) be without the Home and Foundation’s
personnel’s enthusiasm and skill? It is such a joy and honour to work with people who think
‘outside the box’ and are so loyal and committed to the people who live here.
For every person who contributes to the many worthy causes within our community and support
those in need, “thank-you.” Could this City, our province and this country survive without the
generosity and love of the ‘average’ citizen who lives the “golden rule” and/or God’s
commandment – to love one another. Perhaps, but we wouldn’t like what we would see!
When the list of those we must thank is considered, one begins to appreciate that perhaps our
most important task is to create awareness of the Home’s Mission – “to give and receive care and
compassion for mind, body and spirit based on Catholic ethics and Christian values.” As people
contemplate the worthiness of this mission, and the Home’s belief that every person must be
treated with dignity and respect in a caring and loving environment, we will discover there are
more and more people and groups who will support the work of the Foundation. That work, of
course, is simple – to raise money for the many special needs of the people living in MSJ Home
today and tomorrow. Worthy work indeed!
