Restoration.When working on an
existing course, we first understand
the history of the course.

We determine any need to restore historically significant or unique
features, letting us develop a philosophy that will guide the golf course
in the years to come. We then develop a long-range plan for the
golf course, deciding what should be restored, renovated, or altered,
and when it should be undertaken.

Every stroke counts the same, but only on the putting
surface is every golfer without a handicap, because
physical strength is not a factor. So we develop greensites with more movement and contour in and around
them, helping challenge golfers and bring out the best
in their short game.
The teeing area is a controlled view by design, setting
up the strategy and direction that a golfer must take
to execute the hole successfully. Some tees may give
a sense of freedom, while others may constrict the
golfer’s viewpoint through the use of trees, landscape,
or vegetation. Only on the tee is the golfer forced
to assess the hole from the designer’s perspective.
The undulations and strategy of a fairway are most
important to our designs. We create golf holes that
utilize the natural ridges, hollows, and imperfections
in the landscape. This challenges the golfer to
consider his favored path of approach to the green—
and it makes for a better golf hole that changes
with the elements and playing ability of a golfer at
that moment.
We believe it is important to provide for good
turfgrass in the primary rough. But at the same
time, it should not be so maintained as to burden
the maintenance budget of a course.
We strive to create natural areas on most of our
courses. Natural areas can distinguish a golf course
for its unique environment, buffer golf holes
from each other, and integrate the golf course into
the landscape while providing for plant and
animal habitat.

Cada golpe se cuenta lo mismo, pero solo sobre la
superficie del green es donde todo golfista aún el
principiante sin ningún don físico ni fuerza muscular
es igual al otro. Por lo tanto desarrollamos greens con
más movimientos y contornos y alrededor de éstos
mismos ayudamos al golfista a sacar lo mejor de su
juego corto.
El área del tee de salida está controlada por el diseño
y la creación de la estrategia que va a llevar al golfista
a ejecutar su salida para jugar el hoyo correctamente.
Unos tees pueden dar sensación de libertad mientras
que otros pueden restringir al golfista a usar como
objetivo una arboleda, el movimiento del fairway o la
vegetación. Solamente en el tee el golfista es forzado
a ejecutar su salida de acuerdo a la perspectiva del
diseñador.
Las ondulaciones y la estrategia de un fairway son lo
más importante en nuestro diseño. Nosotros creamos
los hoyos de golf utilizando la naturaleza con sus
elevaciones, depresiones e imperfecciones del paisaje.
Esto desafía al jugador a considerar su línea de juego

and endearing.

Bunkers are an integral part of the artistic expression of a golf course. They have the ability to excite,
delight, intimidate, and penalize golfers all at once.
They delight opponents when you land in one. They
intimidate golfers of all levels by their magnitude and
depth. And they are the original hazard intended to
penalize poor execution.
The natural elements, especially wind, influence the
golfer in his quest to find the cup. On some holes it
may help the golfer, and on others, it may thwart his
most valiant efforts to find a playable spot on the golf
course. Its constant variability makes this factor one
of golf’s most refreshing attributes.
Traditionally, water did not have a large part in the
strategy of the game, but today lakes, ponds, streams,
wetlands, and creeks are quite prevalent. For the sake
of playability, we prefer smaller scale-creeks and
streams to serve as strategic hazards, as they often
provide the opportunity for recovery.
Trees play an important part in golf course design.
They are a beautiful aesthetic addition to the environment. They provide shade when it is hot. And they
can be good hazards that define the boundaries of the
hole, forcing golfers to carve shots a certain way.

en el diseño de las canchas de golf. Son muy hermosos y dan estética a la cancha, dan la sombra cuando
hace calor y pueden complicar al jugador que deberá
esforzarse para pensar en su tiro buscando distintas
formas para poder ejecutarlo.

Golf course architect Mike DeVries is a craftsman who insists
on being personally involved with all aspects of golf course
development, including feature shaping of the putting greens
and bunkers.

By being on-site consistently throughout the
construction process, DeVries also enables himself
to continually study the land, reacting to newly
revealed opportunities and improving upon his
original design concepts. This evolutionary
process inevitably results in a unique golf course
of enduring quality.

A 1987 graduate of Lake Forest College in suburban
Chicago (Business Administration), DeVries
apprenticed with golf architect Tom Doak before
going on to the University of Michigan where he
earned his Masters degree in Landscape Architecture in 1994. Following a stint as an on-site design
coordinator with golf architect Tom Fazio, DeVries
has designed and constructed five new golf courses,
as well as consulted with numerous established
clubs about course renovations.

admiration for the work of legendary golf architects
Dr. Alister MacKenzie and Perry Maxwell. DeVries
continues to study the works and writings of the
master golf architects of yesteryear in an effort
to apply those design principles to his own work.
