We’d like to welcome you to Laramie. If you’ve been to our sale before, you
know that we bring years of experience to our breeding programs. We try to
provide you with the best horses we can raise. We have always believed that
integrity combined with quality is what brings people here so we don’t need
gimmicks. At Come To The Source, we bring our programs together in one
place to offer you horses that are raised in big, open pastures with the herd, so
they learn to be around each other and to deal with Mother Nature. Colts grow
and mature naturally, at their own rate.
We have historical, time-tested bloodlines.
We breed for good bone, cow sense, athletic ability, speed and a sensible
disposition. The uniqueness of our program is that you can see several
generations of mares all on the same ranch.

The Driftwoods...
• Our concentration of Driftwood blood started with the Stanley
and Randy Johnston mares. These mares were a blend of
Driftwood, Poco Speedy, Orphan Drift, Sak Em San (son of
Peppy San), Doc’s Jack Frost (sire of Sun Frost) and Captain
Crusade. We bred these mares to our Blue Valentine stallions.
• Another good cross was My Drifty Pride and daughters of
Gooseberry. This proven program, through Valentine Drift, has
given us genetic strength and diversity for the future.

“Randy” is one of the last sons of
Blue’s Beard, and we think he’s
the best. He has a nice hip and a
kind disposition. He earned points
in heeling with limited showing at
aqha shows in 2001, ridden by
Shot Branham. He also sired the
National Foundation Performance

This horse is a blend of the Hayes

King Merritt Ambrose and Red Buck
bloodlines. Because he has such a
strong balance of foundation, he
is crossing well on our current

weighs 1450 lbs. He’s an athlete
from team roping to barrel racing
and has a great disposition.

“Cowboy” is a big powerful horse that
is quick and can really stop hard. He
has earned his ROM in heading
and heeling, has qualified for the
AQHA World Show and has won the
Oklahoma State Fair team roping.
He is easy to be around and has lots
of personality. He comes to about
22% Joe Hancock blood and over
8% Peter McCue. He is making an
excellent cross on our Blue Valentine
mares. He’s a true blue champion!
Dick Van Pelt
Chip Merritt
We looked around for a stud that met
our criteria for preserving the Blue
Valentine bloodlines. After breeding
some mares to this horse and getting
all outstanding colts, we decided to
purchase him. Chip remembers roping
calves and punching cows on Rowdy
Blue Man and Blue Fox Hastings was
a full sister to Gooseberry. He’s 50%
Blue Valentine and the extra Plenty
Coup is a bonus.
Randy Dunn
We named him this because
in blood he is 43.75% Blue
Valentine. People who knew
Rojo when he was younger have
said this horse looks and acts
just like him. He is the closest
thing to Rojo that has been
raised. We believe he has an
exciting future ahead of him. 15
hands and 1300 lbs.

Bath Bros Ranch
Randy and Laurie Dunn - Carrying on
the Bath Family Tradition
My family, the Baths, came to Laramie in the
spring of 1868. The railroad came in the fall and
the Territory of Wyoming was formed. My ancestors built the first wood framed building in Laramie
in 1869. They moved to the Little Laramie Valley
and started raising cattle and horses.
The Bath Brothers had a strong and long tradition
of raising good using horses and reputation cattle. I have tried
to carry on the same principles that have been handed down for
four generations: easy keepers with good minds, speed, bone,
cow and athletic ability. In the 1930’s, they raised remount horses for the government. In the late 30’s they began raising Quarter
horses and became AQHA members in the early 40’s. My wife,
Laurie, and I continue the 140 year tradition of raising horses on
the same ranch while still using the family’s original AQHA number (#7965) as our Lifetime AQHA number.
Red Garretson - one of a kind.
I would like to thank
our brand inspector,
Red Garretson, who
retires this July after
45 years, 1,658,198 hd
of cattle, over 20,000
horses, several sheep
and 10 years of dedicated service at our
sale. Red is not only a
good family friend but
a mentor as well. You’ll
be missed feller.
Kelsey Dunn and
Red shipping
Our ranch is one of the oldest working ranches in Wyoming and
our brand is one of the oldest recorded in the state. The horses
are raised in big, open pastures along side of the cattle. We use
the horses we raise and we feel they offer the genetic strength
to perform and compete in any discipline or arena. Our program
includes 6 grandsons and 31 granddaughters of Blue Valentine.
We are ranchers raisin’ good horses.
May 19th, 2008 Laramie, WY.
Springtime in Laramie can be pretty tough. These horses aren’t pampered they come to the top on their own without supplement throughout the winter.

The Start of A Tradition...
Vince Hayes in the late 1800s.
It all began in 1880 when my great-grandfather, Vince Hayes, trailed a herd of good
mares from Ft. Riley, Nevada to Thermopolis, Wyoming. His two sons, Buster and Laurie,
continued the tradition of raising and riding top horses and sought ways to improve them.
Around 1951, they purchased Texas Blue Bonnet, a son of Joe Hancock. They started
crossing him on their own mares and in 1955 a Patron mare bred to him produced a foal
named Plenty Coup, who went on to also produce many top colts.
At about the same time my grandfather, King Merritt, brought one of the first Quarter Horse
stallions, “Old Red Buck P-9” to Wyoming. As a respected horseman, King had judged the
first Quarter Horse show in California. He and all his children were well known for their
horsemanship skills. King and his son Hyde brought additional stallions to Wyoming, including
Ambrose and Patron. Hyde inherited from his father the satisfaction of riding a good horse he
knew he had raised.
In the fall of 1956, Ken Gunter gave Del Haverty
the pick of the Red Man colts. Del picked a blue
roan stallion named Blue Valentine. Del trained
Blue to rope calves, tie-down team rope, and haze
Buster and Laurie Hayes
dogging steers. Blue later was most famous as
a steer roping horse but Del always felt he was
a better calf horse than anything. Del sold half interest in Blue Valentine to Buster and Laurie
Hayes.
Buster and Laurie stood Texas Blue Bonnet, Plenty Coup, and Blue Valentine. It was quite
an experience to see these studs out with the excellent set of mares Buster and Laurie had
accumulated.
The tradition continued when my mother, Dede (Buster’s daughter), married my father, Hyde.
Hyde started breeding his Ambrose mares to Hayes’ Plenty Coup, then took that cross and bred
to Blue Valentine. This program produced the stallion Gooseberry, Crow Creek (Lory’s top calf horse),
and many good mares.
Buster Hayes with three sons of
Texas Blue Bonnet.
Hyde and Dede then bought the other half interest in Blue Valentine from Del. Hyde felt like it was
a great privilege to rope steers on Blue. In 1970 Hyde roped at his last Cheyenne Frontier Days
on Blue. Everet Shaw, who rode his share of great steer roping
horses, told Hyde that Blue was the best horse at Cheyenne that
year. Hyde and Del both felt that Blue started out of the box quicker
and could catch cattle easier than any horse they had ridden. The
combination of Blue’s athletic ability and Del’s training made him
hard to beat.

The Tradition
Lives On...
Gathering Blue Valentine Two and his mares.
Now Kathy and I continue this tradition by raising horses with
as much Texas Blue Bonnet, Plenty Coup, Ambrose and Blue Valentine blood
as possible, hoping to preserve the heritage of theses great bloodlines.
Interest in these bloodlines has grown incredibly. People from all over tell us that
these horses have such good dispositions. We have a lot of happy buyers from
a wide spectrum of the horse world. It’s simple...no matter what we do with a
horse, we all want to ride one that’s gentle and athletic...versatile and sensible.
Come To The Source and the future...
Last year we marked our 10th year of offering the best horses
we can raise. What we bring to the sale each year is no accident.
Kathy & I work diligently with the future of these horses in mind.
We know what the two of us like in a horse, but the direction of our
Corey and Kathy.
breeding program involves a lot more than that. It takes hours and hours
of discussion and long lists of criteria. Each year’s colt crop represents the things we set out to do.
Our future broodmares.
Thank you to Sam and Dick and Randy for their commitment and perserverance.
We’ve learned over the years what it means to be diligent and committed to a long range goal.
Endless appreciation for those of you out there who love these bloodlines and give us a reason to keep them going.
A HUGE thank you goes out to our family and friends who have helped out over the years.

“What is it about the Outside of a Horse
That is so Good for the Inside of a Man?”
Van Pelt’s Vista Grande Ranch is located south of Laramie, Wyoming up against the base of the Laramie Range of
Mountains at about 7400 feet above sea level. The high plains of Wyoming, its good hard grass, cold mountain water,
and acres and acres of bright blue unpolluted sky is home to the Van Pelt string of top quality ranch bred working
cow horses going back to Blue Valentine, Joe Hancock and Leo. It doesn’t matter whether you rope, cut, barrel race
or just need a good tough ranch horse; we have something that will fit you. This year we welcomed 52 new foals for
your review, and we always have lots of select yearlings from which to choose. We really feel this is our best selection
we have ever offered...the color is TRUE BLUE and there’s lots of it...come take a look. August is a great time to visit
Laramie...drop by to see our horses and visit over a cup of coffee. We’ll leave the light on for you.
Les Talkington & Dick winning another USTRC Shoot-Out.
Note: Dick’s horse “Jimmie” ropes in a pencil bosal...his
dam is a maternal 1/2 sister to Leo Hancock Hayes. Dick
says sometimes we don’t give enough credit to the mare.
Dick and Dianne

This mare and colt represent
the quality and color we have
to offer you this year.
Here’s What You’ve Been Asking For . . .
I was lucky to get Kiley Scott to ride six
horses again for me this year. She and
JoAnn Merritt did a bang up job for me
last year and you won’t be disappointed
with what she’s done this year. You’re
really going to be impressed with these
big gentle ranch horses. All but one are
only two years old...no one can say they
don’t learn fast! Just look at these horses
featured here with Kiley.
This bay roan 3 year
old filly has attracted
lots of attention this
summer because
Kiley has taken her
everywhere. She’s
super minded and
willing to please.
Kiley says this big blue
filly is really a “duplicate
copy” of all the four fillies
she’s been riding. They are
all soft in the bridle and
really riding well. She’s
spent a lot of “quality
time” with them this
summer and it shows.
This big blue stud, owned by trainer
Danny Schicke of Nueve, California
is the reason I love raising these
horses. I accidentally found this
colt, a product of our 2003 sale,
while visiting friends in California.
I was real proud to see my brand
on this good-looking horse. Danny
won 3 saddles and over $10,000 on
him as a 4-yr-old. Danny estimates
he has ridden and trained a thousand
horses, and he places this colt in the
top 1% of all of them. He loves his
disposition and ability to learn.
I have this horse with an outstanding
Nebraska trainer, Greg Frye, pictured at
right. Greg rode several horses for me
last year and I’ve had great comments
on his ability from the purchasers of
those horses. Greg tells me this colt,
Roan Rudy, has learned it all and is
“plumb broke...” just ask his daughter’s
new puppy!
Greg was raised in the
Sand Hills of Nebraska,
and is a self made horse
trainer that learned his
trade form the ground up
for the past 20 years and
he loves every minute
of it.
Jody Cunningham, one of a
handful of “Purina Influentials,”
will show Blue Fire Hancock in
this year’s sale. Blue Fire is a
dynamite grullo roan colt who
is truly in a league of his own.
You can see more of this outstanding horse and Jody’s ability in the
August issue of the National Foundation Quarter Horse Journal.
I feel I have the best cowgirls in SE
Wyoming on our payroll! Tori and Heyli
Bonham, along with Jori Lorenzi, are
just the touch we like with the yearlings.
These horses have gentle starts and trust
everyone, thanks to these young ladies.
At the end of the day,
this is what it is all about.
Thank you for coming...
Happy Trails
A Nebraska native, Sam Renken
was mentored by Bob Roane of
Colorado Springs, a 2 time AQHA

Bob taught the young Sam the
basics and Sam has improved on
that early training for the past 20
years. Additionally, Sam worked for
several quarter horse outfits in the
southeast. Sam has worked exclusively with the big black
horse featured on the previous page (Jacksons Cowboy,
