Greetings!
As president of the board of
the Mt.Vernon Education
Foundation, I am happy to
report that the foundation has
had a marvelous year, and it
is all because of our strong
donors and supporters! We
began the fiscal year by hiring
Andrea Yovanovich as our
new executive director.
Andrea has done an amazing
job keeping us on track to
continue raising dollars to
fund grants for our teachers.
Speaking of grants, this past
spring grant cycle helped
MVEF hit a huge milestone.
Our foundation has awarded
eighty-one grants, totaling
more than $100,000 in just
si x s h o rt y ea rs t o t he
educators of MVCSC.
To
ensure the sustainability of
the success of the foundation,
we have a growing endowment, managed by the
Hancock Community
Foundation, which exceeds
$85,000.

MVEF Grants Funded
When you participate in one of our events or make a donation, you
support the students of Mt. Vernon Community School
Corporation. Each school year, the foundation grants faculty and
staff awards bringing new technology, innovative programs and
support materials to the classroom. Interesting new technology
always sparks curiosity and enthusiasm in our students. Fun
and unique classroom items add memories that last a lifetime.
Support programs in math, language arts, and science ensure
that our students are meeting standards and learning valuable
lifelong skills. Thanks to your generous gifts, the foundation can
make these things happen.
The following grants were funded in 2012/2013:
Mt. Vernon High School
Bernie Campbell – SUMMER IS FOR GETTING BETTER. This
grant offers the possibility for Mt. Vernon High School students to
achieve greater success in Advanced Placement exam scores. The
subject of this grant is a number of intensive four-day workshops
to aid some of our high school teaching staff in acquiring
additional skills needed to educate our math and science AP
students. Six educators were selected to attend the AP Summer
Institute at the Indiana Academy for Science, Mathematics, and
Humanities at Ball State University. The subject areas include
Statistics, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, and Calculus.
Christine Turk – SCIENCE OLYMPIAD MATERIALS. This grant
will open up the possibilities for Mt. Vernon High School
students to participate in Science Olympiad events which have
not been available to them in the past due to the lack of
resources. The introduction of a Robot Arm and other needed
materials, will provide the resources needed to participate in all
23 categories of the Science Olympiad. Students will now be able
to compete in all 23 categories including Robotic Arm, MagLev,
Gravity Vehicle, Elastic Launched Glider, and Boomilever
events.
The Science Olympiad provides highly motivated
students an opportunity to apply their knowledge in a hands on
way that makes learning that much more exciting and adds the
element of competition which provides confidence, poise, and a
sense of accomplishment. Upon receipt of this grant, the MVHS
Science Olympiad team won and placed at several 2013
competitions.
8th Grade Academy
Dean Falkenberg – MOCK
PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION. The “Vote
for Me!” program is designed to teach
students about the presidential
election process from the primaries
through the Electoral College. It is a
hands on program which requires
student participation from role playing
to voting.
Mt. Vernon Middle School
Katie Scott - COMPUTERS ON WHEELS. With increased
access to computer technology, today's students can search the
internet for research projects, access Moodle, create PowerPoint
presentations, and prepare for required testing which now must
be completed via computer. This grant has greatly increased
computer availability to seventh grade students at MVMS. This
grant will allow the seventh grade English department to use
computers whenever needed.
Fortville Elementary School
Kathy Tingwald – ELMO SPEAKS VOLUMES. Do not be fooled,

this grant will not put Sesame Street's Elmo in our 1 grade
classroom s, but will put
technology into the classroom
which is designed to enhance
student learning through the
use of a document camera. The
ELMO TT12 device, with the use
of a projector, allows for the
projection of documents i.e.
quizzes, tests, study materials,
mathematical calculations etc.;
allows for the observation of
small objects and the
comparison of graphs and
charts or other items; allows for
the projection of three
dimensional shapes/objects; and provides for endless other
possibilities for learning. This technology can be used to actively
engage the visual learner as well as hands on learners. The visual
learners will be able to see the topic of discussion such as a coin or
math calculation while the hands on learner can benefit by
operating the equipment and placing objects under the document
camera and describing them to their classmates.
Alyson Huston – RESOURCES FOR RESOURCE. By placing
iPads in the classroom, not only are students introduced to
technology which they will need to use today and in the future, but
it will provide another attractive avenue for educating students.

The iPads will be used by students in kindergarten through 5
grade.
Given the multitude of downloadable, education
application s, students can impr ove reading skills,
language arts skills, math skills, and so much more. The allure of
the iPad aids in retaining student attention levels and interest.
With increased attention and interest levels, the success of a
student is likely assured.
McCordsville Elementary School
Amy Morton – ADDING TECHNOLOGY. This grant is for a mini
computer and portable projector cart. These tools will assist in
presenting videos, pictures, and PowerPoint slide shows via an
existing projector and Mimeo. The combination of these tools
creates a more interactive setting for students and teacher alike.
It provides for greater abilities than exist today in the classroom by
providing larger more visible presentations, interactive writing on
the white board and additional technology to be learned and used

by our 1 grade students.
The portability of the mini
computer/laptop also provides an opportunity for other teachers
and classrooms who may wish to avail themselves of the
technology. In addition, the visual learning it provides is highly
likely to benefit the learning of students who are on the Autism
spectrum.
Courtney Streicher – INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY IN LITTLE
HANDS. The iPads will be used by students in kindergarten for
the enhancement of math, reading, music, and intervention
needs.
Given the multitude of downloadable, education
applications, students can improve reading skills, language arts
skills, math skills, music skills and so much more. The iPads
could also possibly be utilized by other teachers and grades
in the building. These iPads will also be used in cooperation
with the pre-school iBuddy program.
Mt. Comfort Elementary School
Suzanne Hanselmann – FILLING IN FICTION. Through the
funding of this grant, our students in grades 1 – 5 will be provided a
greater variety of fiction books which are believed to hold their
interest. Upon discovering that Mt. Comfort students love
reading fiction series, this grant request was submitted in the
hopes of gaining funding for the purpose of filling the library
shelves with fiction books which will interest students and
assist them in meeting the needs of the “Scholastic Reading
Counts” independent reading program. This grant will also help
in replacing and supplementing the many books and book
series shifted among and between the elementary schools.
Katie Bieda – MUSIC'S MODERN-DAY MINI MUSICIAN. This
grant is designed not only to enhance the music appreciation of

responsibility granted to
the student class having
seniority in the school

maturity and leadership,
the students will not only
learn how to use and play
a ukulele, but will gain an
understanding of the
instrument itself. The goal
is to offer an opportunity
for playing in a musical
ensemble and develop a group of dedicated troupe ukulele players.

Tiffany Creager – THE BODY SAFETY PROGRAM. The Body
Safety Program is a previously funded program designed to
educate students as to their rights to their body so that they can
play an active role in keeping themselves safe. While child
molestation is not a pleasant subject to think about or talk about,
it is something that must be discussed with young people at a level
that is age appropriate, in an environment that is safe, and in a
manner that does not create embarrassment or humiliation. This
program was implemented corporation wide for a second year and
included parents. The program was developed by Sergeant Terry
Hall, a veteran police officer of 38 years; seven of those years were
served with the IPD Sex Offense Branch. Sergeant Hall presents
the Parent/Teacher/Community portion before the program is
presented to students. The past presentation was well received by
parents and children alike.

3nd Annual MVEF 5K & 1 Mile
Family Fun Run/Walk
September 2012
Nearly 200 school supporters tested out the third annual race and gave it
rave reviews! Combined with great weather and family fun, the
community supported this run in great strides. Both courses went
around the Mt. Vernon School campus and music could be heard
throughout.
More than $9,000 was raised to support Mt. Vernon
students and staff. Special thanks to Hancock Regional Hospital for
their corporate support of this new event!
In March of 2013, nearly 200
supporters enjoyed delicious
fare from 15 local restaurants at
the BluFalls in Pendleton. A
huge silent auction helped raise
more than $17,500 at this amazing event! Special
thanks to Dr. Jay Cowan, DDS, The Kinnaman Family,
McCordsville Family Dentistry, and other corporate
supporters for making this event possible!
“Chip in Fore Kids” Golf Outing - June 2013
The MVEF had another successful
golf outing on June 13th with almost
80 golfers enjoying a beautiful day!
More than $7,000 was raised to
support MVEF’s mission. Special

MVEF Scholarships & Funds
The MVEF houses two funds and one scholarship with the sole
goal of supporting Mt. Vernon students. These funds give
individuals and corporations an opportunity to honor important
members of the Mt. Vernon community.
Alumni Memorial Fund
This fund was set up in honor of Mt. Vernon alumni who have
passed. The first inaugural alumni class to donate was the Class
of 1984. MVEF greatly appreciates the dedicated support of Mt.
Vernon Alumni!
Joel Young Memorial Fund
In memory of MVEF board member Jeff Young’s son, Joel Young,
a memorial fund was established to honor Joel and his family with
the theme “Do something good for a child today.”
Coach Steve Williams Scholarship – In honor of the retirement
of Soccer Coach Steve Williams, a scholarship fund was set up to
assist with college fees for one female soccer player and one male
soccer player.
Lindsey Werking and Cole Justus, the 2012-2013 recipients of the
Steve Williams Scholarship.

Congratulations to the Cornerstone Award and
Keystone Award Winners!
Cornerstone Award
The Cornerstone Award is given to one outstanding MVEF
volunteer each year. It is always a difficult decision because
MVEF is fortunate to have so many amazing volunteers who keep
the organization running.
Tony May is recognized as the 2012 recipient of the
Cornerstone Award for his years of volunteer
service and support. Tony is one of the founding
members of the Mt. Vernon Education Foundation
and most recently served as the president of the
board. He retired from MVEF in August of 2012 to
join the MVCSC School Board. Tony continues to volunteer for
the foundation and speak on behalf of our efforts. Spearheading
the “Honor the Past by Building the Future” campaign, Tony
continues to set the bar high for fundraising efforts for MVEF.
Keystone Award
The Keystone Award was developed to recognize a company that
has shown extraordinary support and is considered a dedicated
corporate partner.
Post Road Family Dentistry, P.C. is a tremendous
supporter of Mt. Vernon Education Foundation and
an example of the impact a local, family business
can have on the success of MVEF. Led by Dr. Tim
Schafer, Post Road Family Dentistry has supported
MVEF through sponsorship, volunteer efforts and
commitment since our inception. The Schafer family participates
in our many events and is an outstanding voice for our work in
