The wheaten terrier in Denmark
40–45 wheaten puppies are registered each year.
Mostly a good balance between availability and demand.
First wheatens were imported from Ireland in 1978-79,
followed by two wheatens from England in 1979-80.
Ch. Newkilber Lion In Winter

In the following years, 1–2 wheatens arrived each year,
mostly from Germany, Sweden, Norway, Finland and
the US.
Danish wheatens are being exported mainly to Germany,
Canada, The Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, France,
Italy,
Spain and the US.

Presently, 51 DTK members are registered as wheaten
owners.
These members elect one (or two)
breed representative(s), who organize e.g.:
grooming seminars,
write a wheaten column in the magazine Terrier Nyt,
distribute information on http://www.irish.wheaten.dk
Show results available on http://www.wheaten.dk
Health matters
DTK has a health committee for all the terrier breeds.
Work has recently started with developing breed-specific
breeding strategies for each of the terrier breeds.
In connection with this work,
a health survey is being planned
for wheatens.

Breeding regulations, DKK
Bitches allowed a maximum of 5 litters, and no litters
after 8 years of age.
Stud dogs need a certified testicle status, and are
allowed to sire a maximum of 25% of the average
number of yearly registrations (based on 10 years).
In wheatens, this means approx. 11 puppies in total!
Inbreeding coefficient (can be calculated at the DKK
website), should stay below 6.25%.
No demands for show results or hip x-rays.
Who are the breeders?
9 wheaten breeders with a kennel name, 7 of these are
members in both DKK and DTK.
A few litters are raised by owners that do not have a
kennel name.
The most successful breeders
(in alphabetical order)
during the last decade
have been
Danterri,
Gaelic-Wheaten’s
and Hopla.

equivalent to the price

7000–10000 Danish
crowns.
