Grand Marais Duluth Twin Cities www.gunflint-trail.com Gunflint Trail Association P.O. Box 205, Grand Marais, MN 55604 www.gunflint-trail.com • • • Year-Round Vacations of a Different Nature Woods, Water and Wildlife The Gunflint Trail National Scenic Byway, begins at the town of Grand Marais on the north shore of Lake Superior and follows a 57-mile corridor through the three-million acre Superior National Forest. It is surrounded by the vast Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW). Rugged hills, cliffs, island-studded lakes and some of the oldest exposed rock on the earth characterize this one-of-a-kind setting. This rare and precious natural setting, with its woods, waterways and wildlife, really hasn’t changed much over the centuries. The native residents of long ago, Voyageurs, and pioneers would no doubt find it comfortably familiar. The Gunflint Trail is home to an extraordinary array of wildlife, including moose (frequently seen on the roads and feeding in shallow bays), wolves (sometimes seen, often heard), deer, bears, lynx, pine martens, otters, beavers, bald eagles, loons and dozens of bird species. Pristine lakes teem with trout, walleye, northern pike and smallmouth bass. Wildflowers bloom in the woods and at the roadside, and fall color is spectacular. The Gunflint Trail — and the Gunflint Trails The paved, two-lane road that is the Gunflint Trail traces its origin to an ancient footpath. More than a road, it is a destination — and an area of many trails. There are wooded trails for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, sleigh rides, dog sledding, skijoring and snowmobiling. Water trails, once the routes of the fur-trading Voyaguers, are today used for fishing, boating and wildnerness canoe trips. From generations ago and for generations to come, the Gunlint Trail offers a legacy of exploration, discovery and passage. Your Gunflint Trail Hosts Whether you choose to stay at a lodge, cabin, campground, B&B or yurt — or take an outfitted wilderness canoe trip — you’ll find friendly and knowledgeable hosts with one thing in mind: to help you enjoy your time in this very special setting. For a memorable vacation with as much relaxation or adventure as you wish, make your destination the Gunflint Trail. © EMT © EMT What happens on the Gunflint Trail?
