LADIN
LOCAL HISTORY: AN OVERVIEW
Finds discovered at Passo delle Erbe which date back to between 7000
and 5000 B. C. suggest that the Badia valley was home to temporary
settlements long before it was permanently populated from the
Bronze Age onwards.
When the Romans conquered the Alps in 15 AD, the valley became part
of the Roman Empire. Up until the Middle Ages, Val Badia belonged
to the counties of the Pustertal and Nori valleys. When it was eventually spilt up, the right half (Marebbe, La Valle, Badia and Corvara) was
given to the Sonnenburg monastery for Benedictine nuns near San
Lorenzo in the Pustertal valley. The left half, which went to the bishop
of Brixen together with Rina, now makes up the municipality of San
Martin de Tor (San Martin, Picolin, Jú, Longiarü and Antermoia). When
Emperor Joseph II dissolved the Sonnenburg monastery in 1785 and
the bishopric was secularized in 1803, the population of the valley became direct subjects of the Austrian Empire. But it was only with the
annexation of South Tyrol by Italy after 1919 that the Ladin population
became Italian citizens. In 1927 the Ladin territories were split up and
assigned to three different provinces: Bolzano, Trento and Belluno – a
political ruling which remains valid to this day.
Today, the valleys are home to some 30,000 native speakers, and
in the Ladin-speaking parts of South Tyrol and Trentino, this ancient tongue is an official language used in local administration
and education.

FACTS
The native language
of the local population
Ladin is a Rhaeto-Romance tongue spoken not only in Val Badia
but also in the valleys and villages surrounding the Sella massif
(Val Gardena, Fodom, Fassa and Cortina) and as far away as in the
Friuli region and in the Swiss canton of Grisons. For a long time,
the Dolomite regions did not have a standardised, homogeneous
written version of their language. Efforts to unify the different
dialects in writing however eventually led to the development of
Ladin Dolomitan, or standard Dolomite Ladin.

What‘s your name?
How are you? I am fine.
What are you going to do now?
I was just about to go shopping.
It‘s been snowing, so I am going skiing.
All lifts are working already.
Do you know how to ski?
No, but I‘d like to learn it.
Why don‘t you sign up at one of the local ski schools?
There are plenty of good skiing instructors to teach you.
I‘d like to learn how to snowboard.
What are we doing tonight?
We are going sledging: the slopes are lit at night!
Tomorrow night we‘ll go ice skating.
Tonight we‘re going to watch the skiing instructors
ski down the mountain with torches.
There will be live music and dancing.
I‘m having so much fun in this village!

SAN VIGILIO
The two picturesque municipalities Marebbe and San Martin de Tor
are cosily nestled at the heart of the world-famous, awe-inspiring Dolomites. With only 3000 inhabitants, over the years Marebbe has successfully retained its quaint look and character.
SAN VIGILIO is both the administrative centre of the Marebbe
municipal area and a key destination for tourism and culture. The
hamlets Pieve Marebbe, Rina and Longega offer a fascinating glimpse
of the charming historic Ladin communities. With the remarkable
Fanes-Senes-Braies Nature Park and the popular Kronplatz ski resort
on the village‘s doorstep, Marebbe is an attractive destination for
winter sports and a snow-filled break.
6 San Vigilio | San Martin | Winter Info
SAN MARTIN DE TOR, the centre of the municipal area of
the same name, is home to both the Museum Ladin and the Micurà de
Rü Institute of Ladin Culture – two significant institutions which foster and cultivate the Ladin language and customs, turning the village
into the undisputed cultural centre of the Badia valley (read more on
p. 28-29). Small and yet wow, Picolin is just around the corner and
notably welcoming. Longiarü is an unspoiled mountain hamlet at the
heart of the Dolomites, framed by the imposing Puez-Odle and Sasso
Putia massifs. At the foot of the latter, laid out between lush meadows and forests, lies Antermoia – the ideal starting point for a large
number of hikes.

view from up there is simply breath-taking! From the impressive Concordia bell, marvel at the 360° peak relief depicting
the mountains surrounding Kronplatz and gaze out into the
fascinating Alpine panorama.

Mount Kronplatz, turn left in the direction of the race track.
Walk along the beaten track until you reach a lookout point
with a cross, offering a stunning view onto the Dolomites and
the three villages of Marebbe: San Vigilio, Pieve Marebbe and
Rina. If you keep walking, the trail will take you to the Graziani inn (2080 m). You can hike back the same way or continue along the slope to the Panorama inn and all the way
to the Sole/Sonne lift, which will take you back onto Mount
Kronplatz.

SKI TOURING
AND SNOW-SHOE HIKING
The surroundings of San Vigilio and San Martin de Tor are a real paradise for every fan of mountain sports: The Fanes and Senes plateaus
are ideal for idyllic snow-shoe hiking and ski touring, and Puez with
its advanced high-altitude ski touring routes is still a well-kept secret
among the locals.
Many of the easy routes around San Vigilio or up to the refuges in
the nature park can be enjoyed without a guide and are a true delight
for nature lovers. But while some of the routes around Puez are classified as easy tours due to their relative lack of difficulty and dangerous spots, others require a great deal of experience at high altitudes
as they are very exposed and run through difficult terrain. Our local
mountain guides offer both demanding tours around and up to mountain peaks for advanced skiers and easy excursions for beginners looking for that extra bit of experience and safety. More information can
be obtained from the Tourist Offices (for guided hikes, go to pages
10-12).

PLAYGROUND
SAN VIGILIO
A snowPlayground is not strictly speaking a snow park but a challenging surface that can be described as somewhere between a normal
slope and a fun park. Snow playgrounds typically feature several freestyle elements like three-sixty jumps, horizontal gates, roller-coasters,
quarter pipes, diagonal plus longitudinal ripples or folds and many
more fun tricks. San Vigilio‘s very own snowPlayground is located directly off the Pedagá slope!

to improve their skills. Why not book a lesson with a professional skiing instructor? For more information, just ask the San Martin de Tor

The 12 FIS rules
of conduct on the slopes
We would like to remind our guests that the following rules must be
observed at all times – the 12 FIS rules of conduct are the „laws“ of the
slopes. Please remember: Be careful and always act respectfully towards
other skiers and snowboarders.

After a fall in such a place, a skier or snowboarder must move clear of
the piste as soon as possible.
7. A skier or snowboarder either climbing or descending on foot must
keep to the side of the piste. In Italy: Moving up on the slope is, except
in cases of emergency, strictly forbidden.

traffic.
3. A skier or snowboarder coming from behind must choose his route
in such a way that he does not endanger skiers or snowboarders ahead.
4. A skier or snowboarder may overtake another skier or snowboarder
above or below and to the right or to the left provided that he leaves
enough space for the overtaken skier or snowboarder to make any
voluntary or involuntary movement. In Italy: At crossings, the skier or

CROSS-COUNTRY
SKIING
Cross-country skiing is becoming increasingly popular, and many
guests have discovered and fallen for this fascinating Nordic discipline
on the stunning ski runs of the Badia valley.
NEW!
SAN VIGILIO DOLOMITI NORDICSKI
is suitable for both classic cross-country skiing and skating. For all winter sports enthusiasts who wish to learn or improve their cross-country
skiing, there are two ski schools in San Vigilio which offer both group
lessons and individual lessons (p. 20). And of course you don‘t have to
ski the whole 23 km of the slope: The track is arranged in a number of
routes (rings) which allow you to return to San Vigilio at any time. Alternatively, you can catch a Mareobus and Citybus service to Pederü or
to the football grounds (Skibus stop) and start skiing at different points
of the slope. Please contact the Tourist Board for information on snow
conditions and the state of the slope: +39 0474 501 037.
Use of the cross-country skiing slope is subject to a fee but free of
charge for guests staying at a San Vigilio Tourist Office member facility!
From one end of the village, this 23 km track winds down into the Marebbe valley through the quiet forests and snow-covered mountain pastures
of the Fanes-Senes-Braies Nature Park, where the fresh air seems to glisten and the soothing tranquillity of the winter dominates the Dolomites.
On many different routes (rings), cross-country skiing enthusiasts will
find ideal skiing conditions as well as breath-taking surroundings and inviting mountain inns offering mouth-watering delicacies. Group lessons
and individual lessons are available at the San Vigilio ski schools.

MUSEUM LADIN ĆIASTEL DE TOR
Str. Tor 65 | 39030 San Martin de Tor
This quaint museum documents the culture and history of the Ladin language group at the heart of Tor Castle, a historic building
which dates back to the 12th century and towers majestically above

castle can be visited on a tour through the museum which offers
precious insights into the culture, history and language of the Ladin population living in the Dolomites.
MUSEUM LADIN URSUS LADINICUS
Str. Micurà de Rü 26 | 39030 San Cassiano
This new museum in San Cassiano is dedicated to the geological composition and the prehistoric cave bears of the Dolomites. On three floors, it
tells fascinating stories about the habitat of the Conturines cave bears
which lived in the Dolomites some 40,000 years ago, featuring skeletons
including the bones, teeth and an impressive skull of this only recently
discovered species: the Ursus ladinicus.

THE MICURÀ DE
RÜ INSTITUTE OF
LADIN CULTURE
SAN MARTIN DE TOR Founded in the late 1970s, the Micurà de Rü Institute of Ladin Culture
is a key institution for the local population. Thanks to its invaluable
scientific research into the language, history and culture of the Ladin
population of the Dolomites, over the years it has come to foster and
develop the local language and culture. Its many publications alongside countless cultural and educational activities have long made an
outstanding contribution to the Ladin identity.
The Institute organises a series of cultural events and keeps an archive and a library for Ladin studies which is open to the public from
Monday to Friday (10 am – 12 pm and 3-5 pm).
Watch out for the many exhibitions by Ladin artists organised all

AGRICULTURE
Agriculture plays an important role in South Tyrol. The efforts of local
farmers to conserve and protect our cultivated landscapes have also
had a crucial effect on regional tourism. We therefore kindly ask our
guests to treat the beauty of our nature and the hard work of local
farmers with respect and care.

WE SUGGEST
If you are looking for a special souvenir or even just a piece of San
Vigilio or San Martin to take home with you, why not try some of
the many mouth-watering South Tyrolean products on offer at our
traditional farmers’ markets? The Senni cooperative too offers a
wide range of produce made with milk from our mountain farms:
free from genetic engineering, fresh and unique. Quality and great
taste from our Alpine landscapes!
