MOLLY’S ON THE MEND!
After a dog attack left her fighting for her life, Molly
is now on the road to recovery thanks to your support.
Eight-year-old Molly was exploring her
local neighbourhood when she was
savagely attacked by a dog. The attack
was so severe it left Molly with a broken
leg and punctured lung.
Fortunately, a member of the public
who witnessed the attack, called
the SPCA immediately and an SPCA
ambulance driver was able to direct
them to a local vet. It was just as well
they were on hand because if Molly
hadn’t been rescued immediately, she
surely would have died.
As it was, when Molly, a tortoiseshell
stray, was first brought into the
veterinary clinic, it was thought she
would have to be put to sleep because
her injuries were so severe. Her
punctured lung meant she was barely
able to breathe and she was in a lot of
pain.
After two days of critical care with IV
fluids and oxygen therapy Molly was
stable enough to undergo surgery to
repair her leg. The vet was able to put
her leg back together with steel pins
and surgical wire.
“We collected Molly the day after
surgery and found an experienced
and caring foster family who were
able to help Molly recuperate,” says
Sara Elliott-Warren, SPCA Waikato
Executive Officer.
“She is now recovering well and will soon be
available for adoption.”
Molly’s bleak prospects were
transformed by a combined effort.

veterinarians, a generous foster family
and the intervention of the SPCA:
because of that community of care
Molly is now recovering well and will
soon be available for adoption.
Ours is a community service in every
way – for and by our communities. Yet
care comes with a price tag. A large one.
For Molly is but one of the more than
3,500 animals we help each year.
Our Annual Appeal takes place
throughout November. This is an
important month for us as we rely
on donations to be able to provide
our services to animals in need.

While many animals live in a warm,
loving home, others aren’t so lucky.
Each week, more than 100 abandoned,
mistreated or vulnerable animals
are rescued and cared for here at
the Waikato SPCA. We receive on
average more than 1,500 calls a year;
we investigate some 1,400 inspectorate
cases annually. Our service costs more
than $1million a year to run. We receive
no government funding.
That is why we need your help.
Guardian Angels is the name of our new
regular giving programme. By signing
up to become a Guardian Angel, you
will help to ensure the animals at the
Waikato SPCA have the food, warmth,
shelter and medical treatment they
need while they wait for a forever home.
While you can receive tax deductions
from your regular donations, we
can use it to buy
food,
administer
vaccinations, pay vet bills
and give the animals the
care and attention they so
desperately need.

Leaving a legacy to the SPCA in your
Will is another way you can give these
animals security. Every gift, big or
small, helps us to make a real difference
to the thousands of animals who come
through the shelter each year.
These animals are vulnerable and
they’re placing their trust in you
to provide them with the simple
necessities of life – food and water, a
roof over their head, and TLC.
Also a big thank you to Rodmor
Trust and the Community
Organisation Grants Scheme for
helping with our operational costs
including Inspectorate services
and de-sexing of animals in our
community.
Thanks to Companion Animal
Trust we were also able to microchip and register 400 cats for free
earlier this year.
We have had the National Mobile
De-sexing unit at SPCA Waikato
for July, August and September.
If we can achieve our target of
de-sexing more than 500 cats, it
will result in around 18,000 less
kittens born next season!

Cupcakes for a cause
Thank you for helping us to fight animal cruelty
Here at the shelter, we love a good
cupcake, especially when it’s for a great
cause. So on Monday 25 August we
indulged to support the SPCA’s annual
Cupcake Day to fight animal cruelty.
Thank you to six-year-old Jemima who
baked us some gorgeous gluten free
cupcakes.
We weren’t the only ones licking
frosting off our fingers. At Gallagher’s,
450 cupcakes were delivered for staff
to enjoy, while employees at Deilottes
indulged in 70 beautiful animal cupcakes
courtesy of supporter Tanaya Jade.
Residents at both Alandale Retirement
Village and Cascades also enjoyed a
cupcake for morning and afternoon tea.
Thank you to everyone who got involved
in Cupcake Day this year. Special thanks
to More FM. The team spent three hours
selling cupcakes on Victoria Street with
our volunteers, advertising live on radio
to bring the punters in!
Thank you to SkyCity and Montana
Catering for baking 600 cupcakes which
we used to fill orders from Waikato
Businesses.
Lost and alone: Gemma’s story
Gemma has you to thank as she looks forward to a new life across the ditch
“It was really important that we
captured Gemma because if she’d
continued to live rough, it would have
had serious implications to her health
and re-homing chances,” Donna says.
Alone and hungry, Gemma had noone to rely on apart from herself. The
schnauzer cross had been living wild,
seeking shelter in a rest area on a main
road near Te Aroha. She survived by
catching chickens, eating scraps of
food left by tourists and sneaking onto
peoples’ property to eat rubbish.
After several attempts, Animal
Control Officers captured Gemma in
a farm shed. She had displayed timid
behaviour so SPCA staff thought she
may be unhandleable. “We have had
another case of a dog living like this
and the dog was so fearful she needed
specialist handling and care,” explains
Sara Elliott-Warren, Waikato SPCA
Executive Officer.
“When we bought her back to the
Waikato SPCA headquarters we soon
found Gemma was a very sweet,
well-behaved little dog,” says Donna.
“She was a bit timid at first but really
warmed to the person caring for her.
Gemma was covered in fleas and had
worms, but was in surprisingly good
health, despite being a bit thin.”
The SPCA was certain that Gemma had
to have an owner somewhere looking
for her and searched long and hard.
When her owners couldn’t be located,
she was put out to foster, which is when
Gemma’s luck turned.
“We originally thought Gemma would
be very unsocial having lived free
for so long but she was very friendly
and loving and a warm, welcoming
environment was exactly what she
needed,” says Donna.
“The foster family provided just that
and eventually they adopted her.”
Gemma will soon be embarking on
another adventure. She’s moving to
Australia with her new family.

Crackles
finds a home
Rescued from the street - thank you
for giving Crackles a second chance
He may have acted tough but behind
his rough exterior, Crackles was a big
softy.
Prowling the suburban streets of
Dinsdale, Hamilton, Crackles spent
most of his time fighting with other
cats. But too many battles had taken
their toll on the big black tom. With
nasty abscesses all over his body,
Crackles’ health was deteriorating and
he was in serious need of treatment.
“A member of the public bought
Crackles into us here at the SPCA a
couple of weeks ago and we were able
