Its also once again time for the Kids Fishing Clinic. Thanks to the efforts of Captain Mike Vickers and many others over the years we put on one of the biggest events of this kind in the state. Make sure to volunteer if able. This is a big event and an annual opportunity to show what we are truly about as well as give back to the community. Don’t forget to help Hank out with captains for the Kids Invitational Tournament July 25th July 7th for the Ice Cream Social. A great time to meet new folks, tell some lies and enjoy some ice cream. Be sure to come early to the monthly meeting Chris Fishing should remain as hot as the weather. Top water in the mornings is producing big reds and I am happy to say snook as far north as the 206 bridge maybe further. The beach has been loaded with tarpon and should continue to be for the next few months. Stay cool boys and girls its hot out there. Fishing Tournament Herschel King Park Minutes taken by: Carol Carter Call to Order - by Chris Davy Pledge of Allegiance: by Capt. Mike Brennan Passing of May Minutes: Motion made by Dean Roberts, seconded by Walt Huresky and passed by the members. Finance Report: Tim Miller reported that there is a balance of $24,451.34 in the checking account. The spring tournament raised $4,500 for the club and a check for $7,000 was presented to Second Chance Rescue. Welcome Visitors & New Members: There were 3 guests and 4 visitors at the meeting. Announcements/New Business: Chris Davy announced the outcome of the club elections as he is now in the position of club president, Bruce Bandes is now club Vice President and Mike Vickers has retaken his past position of club weigh-master. Chris said he does not believe he will be holding another cobia Calcutta. Chris will be chairing the Guys & Dolls tournament on 6/06/15, prizes will be 1st place $70.00, 2nd place $50.00 and 3rd place will be $30.00. The prize for total weight between 2 anglers will be $50.00. It will cost $10.00 for a guest and they must fish with a member. Offshore Tournament dates will be June 3rd to June 21st. You can fish any two days but must call Chris to tell him the days you will fish, call him before 9 AM if you need to cancel your date. You can use charters, guides and party boats for this tournament; you can fish Brevard to Duvall County. Bottom Trip: Tim Miller announced that any offshore species that is on our current yearlong list are eligible. Prize amounts, rules and location with times are listed in the June Chum Line. Tim will bring the club scale on the boat and he will be stand in weigh master so participants can weigh their fish in. So far the total signed up was 26, they can go up to 40 people, but would like to keep it around 30. Weigh-Master Report and Fishing Half Truths: Cpt. Mike Vickers reported that he has not done the weigh in slips yet, Chris will finish up with the ones he has and get them to Mike. Mike will start providing copies at the front table of the year long tournament weigh in sheets like it had been done in the past. Mike spoke about the 6th kids clinic which will be held on July 11th at Herschel King park. It will be held there this year because of the big turnout and this park has more shady areas for us to set up in. It will be held from 9 AM - noon. Last year 220 kids attended and this year we have been approved for 250 rods. Fish Flagler license plates provide the money for these rods. Volunteers are needed for various duties, there will be a sign up sheet at the July meeting, we usually have around 40-50 volunteers, you need to show up at Herschel King Park by 7:30 AM,. There will be 9 stations set up to show the knots used to tie on hooks, a live fish tank and other things. Stations will have a script you can use to instruct the participants. Posters are at the back table to bring to businesses around town to display and promote this worthy event. Ages for kids are 5 - 15 years old., registration is free. Bring a non-perishable food item for the food bank, Big Al's Bait and Tackle will provide hot dogs and water, with Big Al doing the grilling. 12 names will be drawn from the kids to participate in the kids fishing on July 25th, they will get to go out and fish on boats captained by club members, when they return, they will be served a luncheon of hot dogs and hamburgers. Old Business: Bruce Bandes apologized to any of the new members who did not receive their welcome package from the club or if they did not get a membership card and that to get the card, they can see him at the break and he will give them out. He also made an appeal to anyone who might be interested in the job of Membership Chairman, because now that he has taken office as our vice president, his previous job needs to be filled. Surf Tournament Recap: Jeff Rafter told us that 30 people had signed up but that only 10 people weighed in fish that day. Conditions were not good; there were a lot of weeds in the water and high winds. Winner results have been published in the June Chum Line. Jeff announced that at the Swap & Shop in the rear of the meeting hall he had heavy sinkers for sale that will hold those choppy water conditions and he also volunteered to Mike Vickers that he would man the touch tank again this year at the kids clinic. Share-A-Ride Program: Emil Naeff announced that he had a member that wanted to do the share ride and that he needed a captain to take the person out fishing. New Business: Jill Scott was presented with the big, big check for $7,000 that was raised for Second Chance Rescue. She posed for a photo with Chris Davy. As the song goes, "She Works Hard For The Money", Jill did an excellent job in working on and at the Spring Classic Tournament. Congrats, the animals will appreciate it. All who volunteered that day were proud to be part of this event, thanks to all of them! Guest Speaker: Our speaker was Brad Kayholm, co-owner of Grand Slam Baits. Brad displayed a poster that showed a variety of the fish caught on his charter fishing trips, beautiful oversize redfish with happy people holding them before they had to say goodbye and put them back in the water. He instructed us on how to catch redfish, by watching the wind speed and direction, to start out super slow and make many casts in the same spot. He told us to use small swimbait in some conditions and a big tail topwater swimbait in others. Change out your small hooks for big ones, look for moving water, using scents can also help land that big one. 50/50 - There was no 50/50 drawing held. Announcement was made that the Ice Cream Social will be held at the July meeting. Whether they are new, used, components, or whatever, they are still “toys” to those of us that love them, can't live without them and always want a newer, bigger better one. So, BIG BOYS PLAY TOYS, INC., located at 272 S. Hwy 17, East Palatka, FL 32131 is sort of like “Toys R Us” except they are for grown men and women that love boats and anything to do with them. Although I have only visited them seven or eight times this past couple years, I have never been in the showroom that either one of our club members was there, had just left, or was on the way. I think it is often just to visit with the great staff as much as it is to buy something. However from the members in our club that own boats from there, it is obvious that they are doing it right. So one of the lessons here is if a fellow club member owes you money and you can’t find him, now you know where to look. ;-) The owners, Rodney and Jennipher Olney have been involved with fishing and boating all of their lives which becomes obvious when you talk to them. They deal with their business with a passion that is too seldom seen. In business since 1993, they have built up a very loyal customer base from St Augustine, Palatka, Palm Coast, Jacksonville, Middleburg, Orange Park, Green Cove Springs and even Gainesville. The list goes on and on. Some of the products they sell and service come from Alumacraft, Honda Marine, Yamaha, Mercury, Johnson/Evinrude, Tahoe Pontoons, Magic Tilt Trailers, Stumpknocker Boats, Mitzi Skiff, Tidewater Boats and too many others to mention. The good thing about the entire staff here is that they all love what they do and they are good at it. Service is great and the parts department either has it or will get it for you about as quick as possible. The bottom line is that if you need parts, service, a new or used “toy” or just want to go look at them and dream, you should definitely pay them a visit. It is an easy drive from just about anywhere in NE Florida and there are a couple of pretty good restaurants near-by to have lunch. Big Boys Play Toys has supported our club very well for some time now and will once again hopefully be an annual sponsor for 2016. It is folks like this that keep us going and allow us to play a couple of times a month. It is important that we support them in any way that we can. Give them a call at (386) 328-4510. Their hours are Tuesday – Friday, 8am to 5pm, Saturday, 9am to 3pm, and they are closed Sunday and Monday. Or, check out their website: www.bigboysplaytoys.com. Lots of information there including financing so they have you covered. SUPPORT ALL OF OUR ANNUAL SPONSORS LIKE THEY SUPPORT OUR CLUB! Amberjack, Barracuda, Bonita, Cobia, Grouper, Porgy, Sea Bass, Snapper, Spanish Mackerel, Trigger and sharks keep fisherman and crew busy.
