SONOMA
BY PAUL RUBIO
Fall colors drape the rolling hills of
Sonoma Valley, California.
L
ush hills strewn with grapevines, endless
expanses of rugged coastline, towering
redwoods and picturesque sleepy towns,
Sonoma County is painted in the
landscapes of fairy tales. A natural nexus of
fertility, it’s the principal producer within
California’s wine country. And around this
fascinating world of viticulture and viniculture,
an entire tourism industry, inclusive of more
than 400 wineries, has sprouted.
Sonoma is not quite as polished as sister
county, Napa, but that’s exactly its charm.
Heavy on creative undertakings, mom-andpop establishments, artisanal wineries and
welcoming locals, this is a region that simply
embraces a global love affair with wine, farmto-table cuisine and California dreaming. Here,
your 36-hour guide to the soul of California
wine country.
DAY 1
Begin your Sonoma County adventure with an
early evening in downtown Sonoma proper.
Check into the Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn
& Spa and enjoy an aperitif at one of the
adorable wine shops lining Sonoma’s proximate
main plaza. Sample a prized pinot noir at the
quaint and rustic Sonoma’s Best or opt for a
zesty chardonnay at the boutique Sonoma
Wine Shop, housed in an impressive circa1891 building, which sources all of its wines
from small wineries across California.
Before sundown, explore the historical
attractions that comprise Sonoma State
Historic Park radiating from the plaza. Don’t
miss Mission San Francisco Solano, the final
Spanish-Mexican mission built in California.
At dusk, return to the plaza for dinner. Delight
in the just-caught, seafood-centric menu and
extensive local wine list at the intimate OSO
Sonoma or experience the apex of farm-to-table
freshness while dining alfresco at Harvest
Moon Café, where the menu changes daily.
DAY 2
Rise and shine for your daytrip through
Sonoma’s vast wine country. Start off with
stops at two legends: Buena Vista Winery,
California’s first premium winery, and
Gundlach Bundschu, the state’s longestrunning family-owned winery. Both are
located just a short drive from downtown.
Next, head to Ravenswood Winery,
where you can preregister for your bespoke
blending seminar where you’ll learn the art of
winemaking and create your own blend to
bottle, label and bring home. Then, buckle up
for the scenic 50-mile sojourn along the

Finish off the afternoon in the tasting
rooms of a few other Sonoma greats, such as
Jordan Winery, also in Healdsburg. Or, head
to Geyserville to oenophile-favorite Stryker
Sonoma or the Hollywood-infused Francis
Ford Coppola Winery, where wine production
and movie memorabilia unite.
Once palate fatigue sets in, head to the
happening town of Sebastopol. On the way,
pop into Lynn’s Lavender & Lotsmore, a local
lavender farm with an assortment of personalcare items, lotions and shampoos made
on-site. Spend your evening at The Barlow, an
WHEN TO VISIT:
The best time to visit Sonoma is during
harvest season, September to mid-November,
when the vineyards—and the entire county—erupt
in full bloom. Runner-up is the summer season,
June to August, when the terrain reaches peak
green and young clusters of grapes begin to appear.

plant that now houses a hodgepodge of tasting
rooms, craft breweries, food producers, art
galleries and restaurants, including Zazu
Kitchen + Farm, helmed by Food Network
personality Duskie Estes.
DAY 3
Wake up early to experience Sonoma’s natural
bounties beyond wine country. Whisk through
tiny towns toward the north shore, stopping
at Howards Station Café in Occidental
(population: 1,300) for the ultimate hangover
breakfast, continuing on to Freestone
(population: 32) to pick up picnic supplies at
Wild Flour Bread Bakery. Ascend to
Armstrong Redwoods State Reserve to smell
the fresh air and get inspired by the towering
trees before heading west to U.S. 1 until you
GETTING AROUND:
Given the distances between the towns
within Sonoma County, a rental car is highly
recommended. Rent a car upon arrival at either of
Sonoma’s two gateway airports: San Francisco, 90
minutes outside of Sonoma, or the smaller airport
in Santa Rosa in the heart of Sonoma County.
reach the misty, rock-hewn coastline. Toast to
your final hours in Sonoma overlooking the
crashing waves at Fort Ross Vineyard Tasting
Room, the closest vineyard to the Pacific
Ocean in California, and enjoy a small picnic
at one of many points along the coastline, en
route to the airport.
Clearly, the sprawling Sonoma Valley has
much more to offer than what you can soak
up in just 36 hours; so, call your Travel Leaders

What’s new, what’s next in travel.
Introducing Norwegian Escape
Indulging every whim is what unforgettable vacations are made of. And
that’s exactly what Norwegian Cruise Line wants its guests to do.
Starting this November, the cruise line’s newest and largest ship,
Norwegian Escape, will offer seven-day cruises from the Port of Miami
to the Eastern Caribbean. Ship features include sensational dining
options, such as the first-ever floating Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville and
two restaurant concepts by James Beard Award-winning Iron Chef Jose
Garces; two Tony Award-winning musicals (“Million Dollar Quartet”
and “After Midnight”); the largest ropes course at sea; the largest aqua
park at sea; a miniature golf course; and a special dinner/show combo
called “For The Record: Dear John Hughes,” which celebrates the
soundtracks of Hughes’ most memorable films in a one-of-a-kind 360degree cabaret.
Say “WOW!” to Royal Caribbean’s Anthem of the Seas
Royal Caribbean International recently debuted its second Quantum
class ship, Anthem of the Seas, a follow up to the highly anticipated
Quantum of the Seas, which launched last fall. Feel the rush of skydiving
with the RipCord by iFLY skydiving simulator; take in magical highflying entertainment at Two70°; ride bumper cars or roller skate in the
massive SeaPlex activities space; or take in 360-degree views of the ship
and its surroundings in the North Star, a jewel-shaped capsule that gently
ascends 300 feet above sea level over and around the ship. And don’t
miss out on the incredible dining options, which offer more flavors and
flexibility than any other ship at sea. After finishing up its summer season
in the Mediterranean, Anthem of the Seas heads to its new homeport in
Cape Liberty, New Jersey, in November to offer round-trip cruises to the
Caribbean and Bahamas.
AMResorts Takes On Cabo San Lucas
AMResorts is expanding its newest brand, Breathless Resorts & Spas, to
Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Slated to open November 2015, the glamorous
adults-only oceanfront resort on Cabo’s Medan Beach will feature an
ultra-contemporary design, 169 oceanfront guest rooms and suites, a
luxurious spa and trendsetting restaurants, bars and lounges. All guests
will experience the benefits of the brand’s “Unlimited Luxury” vacation
concept, where everything is included in one attractive price.
The Louvre Heads East
Slated to open in December, the Louvre Abu Dhabi is one of the Middle
East’s—and the world’s—most anticipated museum openings of the past
decade. The museum is an unprecedented but highly applauded
partnership between the Musée du Louvre in Paris and the city of Abu
Dhabi. Situated on Saadiyat Island, the striking museum was designed
by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Jean Nouvel, who combines modern
architecture with inspiration drawn from the region’s traditions in order
to create a universal space in which all cultures are brought together.
Inside, the museum will present major pieces of work from the fields of
archaeology, sculpture, fine art and more spanning all regions from early
civilizations to modern times. The museum will further establish Abu
Dhabi and the UAE as a major hub for art, culture and tourism. TL

Cruise:
HAWAII
Cruise the Hawaiian Islands for an
unforgettable journey through paradise.
BY JENNA SCATENA
T
an, sandy shorelines, Neptune-blue waters teeming with
ocean life, massive chain-smoking volcanoes... It’s no
secret that Hawaii is a nature lover’s paradise. But with so
many islands and so few vacation days, knowing what
verdant Edens and otherworldly waters to prioritize on
your next trip could be its own Hawaii 101 course. Fortunately,
Norwegian Cruise Line offers seven-day island-hopping cruises to
all the state’s must-see destinations aboard Pride of America, the only
major cruise ship to sail Hawaii year-round. While on board,
Hawaii’s natural aquarium offers its own type of leisurely
sightseeing—gazing out at breaching whales, the Kilauea Volcano
and the dramatic Napali Coast—but how to spend your precious
time in port is entirely up to you.

MAUI
No longer wonder where that tropical fruit salad on your plate came
from. Maui is rife with crops that feed locals and visitors: slender
sugarcane stalks, chubby pineapple plants, bouquets of yellow bananas
and, of course, the ubiquitous Hawaiian coconuts. You can catch a
behind-the-scenes glimpse of Maui’s bustling agricultural industry by
touring a working 60-acre plantation. While there, you’ll also hear tall
tales of the paniolo, Hawaii’s cowboys, and how longhorn cattle help
to farm.
Further inland on Maui, Iao Valley State Park offers nearly
unspeakable views of a lush valley floor encircled by brilliant mosscovered peaks. At its center, you’ll find one of the island’s most
sought-after landmarks, the 1,200-foot Iao Needle, a striking outcrop
that served as an essential lookout point in 1790 during the Battle of
Kepaniwai, one that changed the course of Hawaii’s history.
You can’t fully know Hawaii until you see where it came from:
volcanoes. Maui’s sleeping Haleakala Crater is a good introduction to
the geologic forces that created this tropical paradise. Be strategic
about your approach and visit after the crowds have thinned, just as
the blue Hawaiian sky takes on pink and purple hues at sunset. Once
the sun has settled below the horizon, you’re all but promised a
shooting star show of a lifetime.
BIG ISLAND
Over on the Big Island, just outside of Hilo, witness an island in the
making at Volcanoes National Park. The terrain of this sacred
333,000-acre park evolves right before your eyes thanks to its two
active volcanoes, Mauna Loa and Kilauea, constantly pumping out
orange molten lava. The latter is considered one of the most active
volcanoes on earth, producing enough lava to resurface a 20-milelong, two-lane road every day. Stay out of its way by exploring this
UNESCO World Heritage Site’s other highlights, including ancient
Hawaiian petroglyphs, a walkable lava tube and 150 miles of trails
through burned deserts and lush rainforests populated with wild
orchids. Cap off your nature-infused day by visiting Hawaii’s other
iconic geologic force: the waterfall. You’ll find some of the best at
Akaka Falls State Park. Here, two waterfalls, including the 442-foothigh Akaka Falls, can be seen on a single short hike through a bamboo
grove.
Behold the scope of the biological diversity that makes the Big
Island unique when you dock in Kona. Veer from the lava-strewn hills
and instead slip into a cooler, underwater world at Kealakekua Bay,
where protected waters and sea caves are teeming with colorful marine
life. Strap on snorkel gear for a close-up look at the angelfish, eels,
anemones and fragile coral reefs. Occasionally, spinner dolphins even
saunter into these waters. The bay is also of historical importance—
it’s where Captain James Cook, the first Westerner to set foot on
present-day Hawaii, first landed and also where he died one year later.
After you’ve hiked, swam and seen Hawaii’s ranging
environment, refuel with a taste of it at one of the Big Island’s famous
coffee farms. Kona Mocha pours steaming samples of its awardwinning trellised coffee paired with earthy Hawaiian chocolate.
KAUAI
There’s a reason Kauai is called the “Garden Isle,” and it’s not because
of contrived manicured plots. Instead, the entire island, the greenest
of the cluster, serves as one giant botanical garden. You’ll want to see
as much as possible on this tiny floating oasis, so set out from port
for one of the island’s most dramatic vistas: Waimea Canyon.
Sometimes referred to as “The Grand Canyon of the Pacific,” this 14mile-long crevasse in the island’s crust is 3,600 feet deep and about 1
mile wide.
You’ll catch the most eye-popping views at the Waimea Canyon
Lookout, where scenes of crested buttes and deep valleys seemingly
go on for eternity. Venture close to the bottom and you’ll be greeted
by trails ranging from novice to expert at Kokee State Park.
While on Kauai, don’t miss the Wailua River, one of the only
navigable rivers in all of Hawaii, best viewed by kayak or canoe. This
peaceful 20-mile-long body of water winds through verdant jungles,
passing by thunderous Opaekaa and Wailua falls.

OAHU
Your cruise might end when it reaches Oahu’s sandy
shores, but as one of the best islands for unparalleled
nature, your trip doesn’t have to. Carve out some
time to explore Oahu’s charismatic North Shore,
where chiseled surfers cruise perfect barrels at the
Banzai Pipeline at Ehukai Beach and at Waimea Bay.
If you only have time for one, make sure it’s Waimea
Bay, where Hawaii’s surfers first tackled skyscrapersize waves in the 1950s. Today, its powder-white
sands are sprinkled with sunbathers, cliff jumpers
and, of course, surfers looking for that next epic ride.
Conclude your adventure on a high note with
a brisk helicopter ride soaring above Oahu. Watch
the islands fade into tiny dots as you drift into the

hidden and remote rainforests, valleys and beaches
before dipping down for a closer look at Diamond

Top 10 Once-in-a-Lifetime Experiences in
AUSTRALIA
A
ustralia might just take the cake for being the travel
destination with the most “only here” experiences. Where
else can you see unusual animals such as kangaroos, koalas
and the infamous Tasmanian devils? Where else can you
engage in adrenaline-pumping pursuits at the blink of an
eye? And where else in the world can you get up-close and personal
with the largest living structure on earth? Australia is a magical place
where visitors can no doubt take part in hundreds of exciting and lifechanging pursuits. While there’s certainly much more we could have
added to this list, here, we break down the top 10 once-in-a-lifetime
experiences Australia has to offer.
1. CLIMB THE SYDNEY HARBOUR BRIDGE
The vibrant Sydney Harbour, with its white-sailed Frank Gehrydesigned opera house and the immense Sydney Harbour Bridge, is one
of the most iconic settings in the world. And, you can see this
spectacular vista from a rare vantage point: from above. Led by a
certified guide, you’ll slowly but surely climb through the arches of the
immense bridge (nicknamed the “Coathanger”), while learning stories
about its impressive 80-plus-year history. When you reach the summit,
440 feet above sea level, you’ll be able to soak up incredible panoramas
as far as the eye can see.
2. WATCH THE “PENGUIN PARADE” ON PHILIP ISLAND
Situated about 90 minutes from Melbourne, Philip Island offers a
number of scenic tours and hikes that result in fantastic wildlife
sightings. But it’s the penguins here that steal the show day-in and
day-out. Like clockwork, every evening at sunset, the world’s smallest
penguins waddle their way back to shore after a day of fishing in
Australia’s calm, clear waters. You can see these penguins in their
natural habitat from the main viewing area at Summerland Beach,
which has tiered seating that yields 180-degree elevated views of the
penguins on parade. Be sure to pay close attention, as photography
of these cute little critters is unfortunately not permitted.

3. TAKE SURFING LESSONS AT BONDI BEACH
What better place to learn how to surf than in the surfing capital of the
world? Beautiful people, beautiful weather and beautiful scenery... you really
can’t go wrong! Just four miles east of Sydney, the world-famous Bondi
Beach is a stomping ground for avid surfers, who ply the waters waiting to
hang ten on that next big wave. Whether you’ve surfed before or are
completely new to the sport, a number of group and private lessons by
accredited instructors are offered year-round to suit your individual needs.
4. EXPLORE AWARD-WINNING WINERIES
It’s common opinion among wine connoisseurs that Australian wines
don’t always get the credit they deserve. Although lesser-known than
say, France, Italy or California wine countries, Australia is home to more
than 2,400 wineries scattered throughout the country. The region’s mild
climate and fertile soil make it a grape-growing haven, offering some
100 different varieties. Penfolds Grange is often lauded as Australia’s
finest wine. For the ultimate tasting experience, head to Magill Estate,
located in the foothills of Adelaide in South Australia. Here, you can
tour the Grange Cottage, the original home of Dr. Christopher and
Mary Penfold, the winery, the vintage cellar and the underground drives
and learn about the winery’s rich history, which dates back to 1844. Be
sure to stay to dine at the adjacent Magill Estate Restaurant to indulge
in fine cuisine paired with equally fine wines.
5. SNORKEL THE GREAT BARRIER REEF
Australia provides unmatched access to the awe-inspiring Great Barrier
Reef, the world’s largest living structure, which stretches more than
1,200 miles along the Queensland coastline. It’s so big, in fact, that it
can be seen from outer space. The best way to reach this natural wonder
of the world is via high-speed catamaran through Australia’s sparkling
turquoise waters (about a 45-minute ride from Cairns). Most tour
companies will outfit you with the proper snorkeling gear and escort
you to safe and secluded parts of the reef that are teeming with colorful
tropical fish, sea turtles and other unforgettable underwater marvels.

6. VISIT ULURU (AYERS ROCK) WITH AN ABORIGINAL GUIDE
Located in the heart of Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park in Australia’s
aptly named Red Centre, Uluru (also known as Ayers Rock) is one
of the country’s most iconic symbols. This massive rock form—about
2.2 miles long and just over a mile wide, rising 1,141 feet into the
sky—needs to be experienced in person to truly understand its
grandeur. The oxidation of the rock’s iron content gives it its
extraordinary orange-red hue. Fully appreciate this ancient landform
by touring the base with an Aboriginal guide, who will share the
native Australians’ millennia-old traditions and mystical connections
to the landscape. Or, get a bird’s-eye view of this natural spectacle
via helicopter or hot air balloon tour.
7. GO BUNGEE JUMPING OR RIDE THE “MINJIN SWING” IN
CAIRNS
Extreme sports are not uncommon in the land Down Under. Bungee
jumping, in particular, is one activity that tops many visitors’ bucket
lists. It’s no surprise then that the world’s first-ever tower built
specifically for bungee jumping was built in Australia. Located just 10
miles north of Cairns surrounded by waterfalls and tropical rainforest,
this massive tower is high enough that from the top, you can see all
the way to the Great Barrier Reef. The tower is also the location of the
one-of-a-kind A.J. Hackett Minjin Jungle Swing, where up to three
people at once are strapped in plank position to a large pendulum that
swings from a height of 148 feet to just above ground in just 3.5
seconds, reaching speeds up to 75 mph. Talk about an adrenaline rush!
8. ATTEND A CRICKET MATCH AT MELBOURNE CRICKET
GROUND
Wickets, nurdles and zooters, oh my! Cricket may not be prevalent
in the United States, but in Australia, it’s one of the top spectator
sporting events. And where better to watch Aussies’ national pastime
than at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, the largest cricket stadium
by capacity in the world. Even if you have no idea what’s going on
during the game, the stadium itself is a sight to behold. Known
simply as “The G,” the stadium, which can hold just over 100,000,
is the 12th-largest in the world (and the largest in the Southern
Hemisphere).
9. SWIM WITH THE BIGGEST FISH IN THE SEA
Ningaloo Reef in Western Australia is one of the only places in the
world where you can swim with whale sharks, the biggest shark
species—which can reach over 50 feet—and the world’s largest fish.
Despite their massive size, whale sharks are harmless to humans, as
they feed mostly on plankton and krill. Snorkel tours from Coral Bay
allow you to swim side-by-side with these curious creatures, which are
typically found in much deeper waters. Tours run between March and
July, but the sharks here can often be seen through August and even
September. Although sightings are not guaranteed, when in season,
tour operators boast a nearly 95 percent success rate.
10. WITNESS RARE AND EXTRAORDINARY WILDLIFE
More than 80 percent of Australia’s plant, mammal, reptile and frog
species are native to the country and cannot be found anywhere else
on the planet. From kangaroos and koalas to wallabies and wombats,
there are plenty of rare and unusual animals for which to keep your
eyes peeled—no matter which region you travel. To ensure you spot
your favorite of the bunch (and perhaps a few you’ve never even heard
of ), head to one of the region’s world-class zoos or wildlife parks, such
as Cleland Wildlife Park in South Australia, the Taronga Zoo in
Sydney, the Rainforest Habitat in Port Douglas or the Australia Zoo
in Queensland. TL

A Journey Through
Ireland’s Southern Side
Driving Ireland’s sometimes-crazy roads might sound like an adventure in
itself—until you look out your windows and realize you’re surrounded by some
of the most unspoiled, breathtaking scenery. Here, Karen Asp shares a loose
itinerary to help you explore this enchanting countryside.
28 Postcards
O’Brien’s Tower in the Cliffs of Moher,
near Doolin, County Clare
Postcards 29
“Pints took a backseat as I watched—
and interacted—with a countryside that
put me in complete awe.”
Connemara National Park, Galway
W
hen I first arrived in Dublin, I did as any good
beer lover should do: I headed to the Guinness
Storehouse where I sampled Ireland’s “magic brew”
straight from the womb, so to speak. While it was
more delicious than any Guinness I’ve been served
in the States (I’m sure it had nothing to do with being on the seventhfloor Gravity Bar where I had panoramic views of the city), that
experience was only a small blip in the radar during my trek through
Ireland’s southern half.
Instead, pints took a backseat as I watched—and interacted—
with a countryside that put me in complete awe. Follow my lead and
point your vehicle south where you’ll appease your nature-loving side
and visit some of Ireland’s most iconic sights. Your tour starts now.
DUBLIN
Ireland’s capital is a natural starting-off point since it’s easily reached
from the U.S. Even if you’ve been here before, it’s worth visiting again
for the setting alone, as Dublin is bordered by Dublin Bay and the
Dublin and Wicklow mountains.
Fortunately, you won’t need a car here; the city’s easy to navigate
by public transportation or on foot. Get your bearings by knowing
that the River Liffey divides Dublin into two sides, the Northside and
Southside, and all of the main attractions are within these areas, close
enough that you don’t have to wander far.
Start on the Southside where you’ll find the Iveagh Gardens,
designed in 1865 and considered one of the city’s secret gems.
St. Stephen’s Green, a 27-acre square that was used for public
punishment in the 1600s, is another treasure-trove of greenery with
gardens, an ornamental lake and walking paths.
30 Postcards
Trinity College, a 47-acre university founded in 1592, is another
must-visit. Pop into the Old Library where you’ll find Ireland’s largest
collection of books and manuscripts, including the Book of Kells, a
ninth-century gospel manuscript. Then visit the Little Museum of
Dublin to learn about life in the city since the early 1900s.
Cross over to the Northside where the Dublin Writers Museum
and the James Joyce Centre await. (See sidebar on opposite page for
more on each.) Dublin’s most famous thoroughfare, O’Connell
Street, also resides here. The street is home to the “Spire,” the world’s
tallest sculpture.
COUNTY KERRY
Now that you have your car, venture toward County Kerry, which is
called a “kingdom” for good reason: Rugged mountains and quaint
fishing villages make it one of the country’s most picturesque regions.
Base yourself at Killarney or Kenmare, both of which are located along
the Ring of Kerry.
The 111-mile route, arguably Ireland’s most scenic, loops you
around the beautifully untouched Iveragh Peninsula. That outdoor
playground allows for hiking, cycling and beachgoing opportunities.
The ring also circles Killarney National Park, where you’ll find
castles, lakes (for boat tours) and Muckross House, a 19th-century
Victorian mansion.
Other highlights include charming villages such as Glenbeigh,
Waterville, Sneem and Killorglin. If you arrive in August, visit the
Puck Fair, Killorglin’s famous pagan festival. You should also stop at
the Skellig Experience, where you can cruise around the Skellig
Islands, one of which was a sixth-century monastic settlement and is
now a UNESCO World Heritage site.
From top: View from the Ring of
Kerry, County Kerry; Trinity College,
Dublin; boats docked in Galway.
RULES OF
THE ROAD
Driving in Ireland can be challenging,
namely because you’re on the opposite
side of the road! Follow these tips to
navigate your way around:
• Be cautious in roundabouts. Remember
that you’ll enter roundabouts by turning left.
• Speed limits are listed in kilometers per
hour. One km/h is equal to .62 mph; so 50
km/h is roughly 31 mph, while 80 km/h is
about 50 mph.
• Using your cellphone while driving is illegal.
Even hands free devices can result in a fine.
Postcards 31
Clockwise from top: Historic Ha’penny Bridge over the
River Liffey, Dublin; Marsh’s Library, Dublin; bagpipes
player at Ashford Castle.
IRELAND’S
LITERARY
LEGENDS
From James Joyce to William
Butler Yeats, Ireland has
produced some of the world’s
most revered wordsmiths. Get a
taste of its rich literary history by
visiting these attractions:
2) Marsh’s Library:
Read to your heart’s content at
Ireland’s oldest public library,
which houses more than 25,000
books. Note that it’s closed on
Tuesdays, Sundays and bank
holidays.
3) James Joyce Centre:
Although Joyce never lived here,
he was closely connected to one
of its former residents, who
appears several times in
“Ulysses.” Tour exhibitions such
as “James Joyce & Ulysses” offer
insights into the writer’s most
famous novel. The center also
offers guided walking tours of
the city based on Joyce’s life and
works.
GALWAY
Galway is often described as one of Ireland’s liveliest
cities. Not only does it buzz with energy daily, but
it’s also a city of festivals, meaning that there’s always
something happening in this university town.
You’ll soon discover that Galway’s medieval
historic center is pretty compact. Of course, you
can’t miss going to Eyre Square, the city’s largest
open space, or strolling down Quay Street, a
colorful, pedestrian-only avenue with shops and
restaurants.
When you need a break from the city’s
energy, take a daytrip to Connemara National
Park, which features mountains, bogs, grasslands
and woodlands. The real treat, though, might be
dining (and staying) at Ashford Castle, circa-1228,
now a five-star hotel. Roughly 30 minutes from
Galway, the castle lies on 350 acres along the
shores of Lough Corrib.

COUNTY CLARE
Clare may not be a kingdom per se, but it is one of
Ireland’s most beloved coastal counties. Doolin, a
seaside village on the Atlantic Ocean and Ireland’s
rocky Burren, makes a perfect base camp. From
there, you can easily visit the Cliffs of Moher, a 5mile stretch of rocky cliffs that rises 700 feet out of
the sea. Sheltered ledges provide habitat for colonies
of seabirds, roughly 30,000 pairs during nesting
season from April to July. Plus, on a clear day, you
can see as far as the Aran Islands—Inis Mór, Inis

Top Five...
CHRISTMAS CITIES
There’s nothing like strolling through Christmas markets,
sipping mulled wine in adorable medieval villages,
going ice skating, doing last-minute shopping and
gazing up at enormous Christmas trees to put you in the
proper holiday spirit. Here are our top five picks for
where to visit during the upcoming holiday season.
BY EMILY BENSON-SCOTT
2
1
1. ROTHENBURG OB DER TAUBER,
GERMANY
This perfectly preserved medieval town on Germany’s
Romantic Road gears up for the Christmas season yearround. Browse through the walled city’s charming
half-timbered shops, including Käthe Wohlfahrt, a
winter wonderland brimming with traditional
Christmas decorations such as nutcrackers and angels.
Visit the Christmas Museum on the second floor to see
decorations and advent calendars over the ages. And be
sure to sample regional sweets such as snowball pastries
while meandering through the city’s famous centuriesold Christmas market.
2. NEW YORK, NEW YORK
There’s nothing like sipping hot chocolate and
beholding the enormous 100-foot-tall Norway spruce
at Rockefeller Center or ice skating at the adjacent
outdoor rink to get you in the Christmas spirit. If
you’ve got some last-minute shopping to do, stop
inside some of the world’s most famous department
stores—including Saks Fifth Avenue and
Bloomingdale’s—where you can have your presents
wrapped on-site. (Be sure to check out the amazing
window displays first.) Head down to Rolf ’s German
Restaurant near Gramercy Park and enjoy Alsatian
food and mulled wine while admiring the famously
over-the-top Christmas decor. And, of course, don’t
miss a performance by the world-famous Rockettes,
a New York City tradition.

3. QUEBEC CITY, CANADA
Quebec City’s historic district, Quartier Petit
Champlain, is one of the oldest cities in North America
and the only walled city north of Mexico. Stroll
through the narrow winding cobblestone streets lined
with Christmas trees while sampling some
of Quebec’s famous maple syrup products. Since
French is the official language, you may feel as if you’ve
crossed the Atlantic—just without the jet lag.
4. VIENNA, AUSTRIA
Austria’s elegant capital comes to life in the wintertime
with a series of classical music concerts at the
Schönbrunn Palace, where the local orchestra perform
works by classical composers such as Mozart and
Strauss and other Austrian composers. The fairy-talelike Christmas market out front, with its imperial
backdrop, is a Viennese tradition. Be sure to sample
strudel and mulled wine while meandering the festively
decorated stalls.
5. STRASBOURG, FRANCE
Referred to as “The Capital of Christmas,” this adorable
Alsatian town is renowned for having the oldest and
most famous Christmas market in France, dating back
to 1570. Browse the more than 300 chalets, wooden
stalls that sell decorations, crafts and sweets, while
listening to bands play Christmas music. Be sure to
sample some traditional Alsatian holiday gingerbread
cookies, then stop to admire Strasbourg’s impressive
Christmas tree on Place Kléber. TL

Culinary Quest
LAS VEGAS
Zoe Settle takes us on a tour of Sin City’s most sinfully delicious dining establishments.
W
ith world-class resorts and unrivalled entertainment, it’s
no surprise that Las Vegas is now a prime destination for
serious foodies. Whether it’s a five-star steakhouse at a
major casino or a tiny off-the-beaten-track eatery, there’s
plenty of places to satisfy your palate, both in the heart of the action or
just a short drive away.
ON THE STRIP:
At The Palazzo, Morel’s French Steakhouse & Bistro offers all the
classics to please meat lovers, but with refreshing twists like the over
60 farmhouse and artisanal cheeses and cured meats. Wine lovers
can sample over 70 choices by the glass from an impressive selection
from over 450 wineries ranging from big-name vineyards to smaller,
independent ones. To truly live it up Vegas-style, choose your
preferred cut of 28-day aged beef and top it with Dungeness crab
Oscar. Or, for a hangover-curing brunch, design your own bloody
mary with the tableside “Blood Cart.”
Trump International Hotel Las Vegas is one of the city’s only
nongaming and nonsmoking hotels, but that doesn’t mean it’s not
up for a good time. DJT is a sure bet for the cocktail enthusiast.
Master mixologists Antonio Olvera and Andrew Almanza create
seasonal specialties and homemade infusions aged from one week to
a month. Both the cocktails and Chef Sydney L. Jones’ menu use
natural and local ingredients wherever possible. Whet your appetite
for savory indulgences such as the hoisin-marinated duck, New
Zealand rack of lamb and a daily soup “inspiration” like handshucked pea soup with desert lavender flowers.
Step back in time into the Rat Pack era at The Barrymore, a
welcome respite inside the Royal Resort, which is located just
seconds off the Strip near the Convention Center. Chef de Cuisine
Eric Lhuillier logged time in several acclaimed kitchens in France,
an experience that informs his menu of elevated American fare that
includes lobster mac and cheese, veal sweetbreads and an assortment
of steaks (with rich accompaniments like lobster tail or foie gras
medallions). Regulars no doubt return because of the top-notch
service—just like the good ol’ days.
greens are boiled together with smoked meats, bones or salt pork, a
traditional dish in the American South. Restaurateurs and longtime
friends Flip Arbelaez and Doug Bell spent time traveling the
“barbecue belt” to research techniques and recipes for their year-old
restaurant. Rediscover Southern favorites like pork rinds and stuffed
trotters along with signature items such as Grilled Prawns with
Boudin Noir, Skirt Steak over Oxtail Ragu and the P.L. Brisket
Burger. Be sure to sample all four of the restaurant’s signature sauces,
each an homage to a place that takes its barbecue very seriously.
Lotus of Siam is perhaps the first off-the-Strip restaurant to
receive glowing reviews from foodies everywhere (back in 2000,
Gourmet magazine labeled it the best Thai restaurant in North
America). Despite its totally nondescript setting in a strip mall, this
restaurant is a must. Chef Saipin Chutima creates northern Thai
specialties at her family-owned restaurant where every wall is filled
with framed pictures of famous regular guests.
“Raku” means enjoyment in Japanese, and that’s exactly what
lucky first-comers and those patient to wait will feel at Sweets Raku.
The sweet-tooth pleaser is located just a couple of miles from the
Strip on Spring Mountain Road, which runs through the heart of
Chinatown, and specializes in inventive Japanese interpretations of
French-style desserts.
Part of the ambitious “Downtown Project” aimed at revitalizing
the local spirit of Las Vegas (championed by Zappos CEO Tony
Hsieh), Carson Kitchen opened in the summer of 2014 in the
former John E. Carson Hotel. Chef Kerry Simon, considered the first
local celebrity chef, oversees the gastro-lounge cuisine (think: crispy
chicken skins, gyro tacos and a jerk turkey burger), while the decor
was inspired by his own Las Vegas loft-style home, a perfect fit for
the new hipster vibe of the neighborhood. Be sure to grab a cocktail
before or after on the garden-style rooftop and enjoy live music. TL
OFF THE STRIP:
As its name suggests, Echo and Rig Butcher & Steakhouse boasts
having the only namesake butcher shop in town (and a design that
showcases the view of the shop and its nose-to-tail program through
floor-to-ceiling windows). The two-year-old restaurant serves up over
90 dishes with seasonal ingredients and grass-fed beef that are
accompanied by farm-to-glass cocktail, beer and wine menus.
Don’t be fooled by the name, Pot Liquor Contemporary
American Smokehouse was created as an authentic Southern-style
barbecue restaurant with a contemporary spin. “Pot Liquor” refers
to the rich, savory broth created when collard, turnip or mustard

Sure, you can rack up miles walking
through casinos, but this is the perfect
season to explore Mother Nature’s beauty.
Rent a bike or pack your hiking shoes and
take off for some incredible sites.
RED ROCK CANYON:
As its name suggests, these iron-loaded
rocks in Nevada’s first National
Conservation Area make a beautiful
contrast to the blue sky. Set off on more
than 30 miles of marked trails for some
non-neon scenery, just 17 miles west of
the Strip.
HOOVER DAM:
Cross the border into Arizona (just 30
miles southeast of Las Vegas) on a
pedestrian footbridge to admire this
tremendous engineering feat—the largest
concrete structure ever built at the time of
its completion in 1936—that still powers
public and private utilities in three states.
LAKE MEAD:
Though Vegas is in the middle of the
desert, just 25 miles from the Strip sits
Lake Mead, the largest reservoir in the U.S.
(when at its capacity, which it hasn’t been
for three decades due to water shortages).
There are nine main access points to the
Lake Mead National Recreation Area to
enjoy boating or kayaking across its 100mile length, with plenty of paths around it
for landlubbers.

Switzerland isn’t just a mecca for skiing. During the summer months, it becomes a
playground for discovery—in French, German and Italian.

SWISS WATCH
With a total square mileage about twice the size of New Jersey,
Switzerland is one of Europe’s more diminutive countries. And for
visitors, that’s a bonus. The country’s soaring mountain peaks,
crystalline lakes and walkable cities are all within just a few hours of
one another thanks to an efficient transportation system that includes
well-marked highways, trains and, during warm weather, boats. And
since Switzerland embraces its four seasons, you’ll find plenty to do
no matter when you go (the Swiss are just as passionate about hiking
the Alps during the summer months as they are about skiing them in
the winter).
Even better, since Switzerland shares borders with France, Italy
and Germany, you can take in a range of tastes and cultures with
minimum travel. To the east, near Lake Geneva, French is widely
spoken and café au lait is served in oversized bowls. Just two hours
away by train, Zurich’s Swiss-German dialect belies a German
influence that radiates south toward Lucerne’s lovely lakes and soaring
mountains. And in the sunny Ticino region, where Switzerland meets
Italy, lakeside cities like Lugano have a Mediterranean flair. No matter
where you go, though, you’ll find that English is widely spoken, the
chocolate is fabulous and the fondue creamier than you can imagine.
To help you find your own personal favorite Switzerland, we’ve
highlighted a few crowd-pleasers—some well-known, others less so—
in each region. The only remaining question: When are you leaving?
LAKE GENEVA DISTRICT
Old World style and a surreal landscape come together in this Frenchaccented alpine locale.
Established by the ancient Romans, Lausanne is set within a hilly
region of vineyards, classic architecture and terrific shopping on the
banks of Lake Geneva. Voltaire, Mozart and Coco Chanel all spent
time in this beautiful medieval city where, on clear days, you can see
the French town of Evian and the peak of Mont Blanc across the lake.
Top sites include the Notre-Dame Cathedral, which began
construction in 1175 and was never technically completed, and the
International Olympic Committee’s Olympic Museum, where you
can view artifacts that range from depictions of sports from ancient
Greece to various Olympic torches and Carl Lewis’ golden shoes.
There’s an outstanding video library as well.
The Romans didn’t stop building when they finished Lausanne;
they planted acres and acres of grapevines to produce wine. Hundreds
of years later, monks improved on the system, building terraces into
the steep limestone hills. Today, the Lavaux, as this area is called, is a
UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Lausanne is also known for its literary history. Victor Hugo and
Fyodor Dostoevsky strolled the streets of Vevey, the waterfront village
where Henry James set his novella “Daisy Miller” in 1878. Brunch at

ZURICH
Stately and historic, modern and efficient, Zurich was made for
wandering. The twisty, cobbled streets of Old Town are filled with
cafés, historic churches, boutiques and bakeries. Along the
Bahnhofstrasse, the city’s fabled shopping street, sleek department
stores, exclusive designer shops and imposing Swiss banks are set along
wide sidewalks. For a head-on view of the lake topped by its halo of
mountains, make your way to Bürkliterrasse, a pretty promontory
situated where the Limmat River meets Lake Zurich. There are
museums galore, too, including the Swiss National Museum, which
is home to nearly a million pieces of history, and the Kunsthaus,
Zurich’s renowned art museum. No matter where you go, the city’s
medieval churches are easy to spot: there’s the massive clockface of St.
Peter’s, the twin spires of Grossmünster and Fraumünster, which is
known for stained-glass windows created by Augusto Giacometti and
Marc Chagall.
Zurich’s lakefront location and easy access to the Alps means
there’s plenty for active explorers to do as well. Tour boats ply the
waters year-round, and you can bike or stroll along the wide pathways
that meander along both shores of the nearly 18-mile-long bananashaped lake. Or, work for that scenic vista and follow the Planet Trail
to the top of Üetliberg, Zurich’s local mountain. Refuel on cordon
bleu in the ultra-casual beer garden at Rheinfelder Bierhalle on
Niederdorfstrasse or on Zürcher Geschnetzeltes, a savory dish of veal
in cream sauce served with crunchy rösti potatoes.
LUCERNE
It’s said that Lucerne’s medieval architecture has such fairy-tale appeal
that Walt Disney used its 14th-century water tower as a model for
the tower where Sleeping Beauty fell into her slumber. Against a
scenic background of snowy mountains and misty spruce forests,
Lucerne’s quaint wooden bridges, tall spires, splashing fountains and
brightly shuttered windows set a perfect alpine village tableau.
Modern art and design are part of Lucerne’s cultural landscape
as well. French architect Jean Nouvel designed the futuristic Culture
and Convention Center, which houses a state-of-the-art concert hall,

mountain in Lucerne
CULTURE & CONVENTION CENTER IMAGE @URS WYSS PHOTOGRAPHY
Confiserie Poyet is a Vevey tradition; don’t miss the fabulous
handmade chocolates. Towering over the shoreline, Chillon Castle
was built in the 12th century and comprises 100 buildings. In the
cellar, where Lord Byron’s famous poem “The Prisoner of Chillon”
was set, you can still see the metal rings used to attach prisoners’ chains
to the walls.
A little over two hours from Lausanne, the ski resort of Zermatt
is the jumping-off point for the Matterhorn, the nearly perfect triangle
at the highest point in the Swiss Alps. During the summer, hiking
trails loop around the majestic mountain, which can also be toured
by helicopter.
OFF THE
BEATEN TRACK:
Near Lugano:
Swiss village on Lake Lugano
the Lucerne Museum of Art and four restaurants
and bars. The nearby Rosengart Collection
celebrates the work of Paul Klee, Picasso and
other modernists in a restored neoclassical-style
bank building. The city’s most popular attraction
is the Swiss Museum of Transport, an
extravaganza of movement from place to place.
Lucerne is a terrific place from which to
explore the Alps and the tiny resort villages and
mountain aeries that line the lakefront. Mount
Pilatus, which towers nearly 7,000 feet above the
city, is filled with opportunities for adventure
including a summer toboggan run, a ropes park
and hiking trails. Getting there is half the fun.
Take a ferry to the steepest cogwheel railway in
the world or drive to the aerial tram, which offers
spectacular views of the mountains and lakes. On
weekends, traditionally dressed alpenhorn players
set a festive atmosphere on the summit.
TICINO (LUGANO)
Set with parks and lakefront promenades, strewn
with gardens and outdoor cafes and rimmed with
snow-capped peaks, Italian-styled Lugano is
unabashedly romantic. Take one of the free
guided walking tours through the town, ogle the
magnificent fresco hidden inside the Church of
Santa Maria degli Angioli, rent a small boat and
explore the lake, or hike to stunning views on one
of the many paths that crisscross the forested
mountains. There’s shopping, too, both within
Lugano and at Foxtown, where designer outlets
from major Italian brands are open every day.
A funicular makes it easy to reach the
summit of Monte Brè and the nearby gallerystrewn village of Bre; there are also mountain
biking and hiking trails that lead up and down
the mountain. Nature lovers and thrill-seekers
head to the Verzasca Valley for bungee jumping
over the Verzasca Dam (James Bond did it in
the movie “Goldeneye”), jumping off the Ponti
dei Salti bridge into the crystal-clear water of
the Verzasca River and splashing in the waterfall
at Froda.
There are lots of ways to get to St. Moritz
from Lugano, the most dramatic of which is the
Bernina Express, a train that passes over 196
bridges and across a glacier during the trip. The
chic, historic mountain resort offers some of the
best ski conditions in the world, designer
boutiques along Via Serlas, museums, spas and
more than 350 miles of alpine hiking trails. TL
A water taxi is the prettiest
way to reach the ancient
cliffside community of
Gandria, where lunch is served
on patios stretched over the
lake. Stroll back to Lugano
along a lakefront path set with
olive trees, with stops along
the way at tiny waterfront
cafes and Villa Heleneum,
with its stone staircases and
scented gardens.
Near Lausanne:
Set in the foothills of the Alps,
Gruyères, home to the cheese
of the same name, is fondue
central, with restaurants on
every block serving up
bubbling pots of delicious
melted cheese. If you can tear
yourself away from the
creamy delight, you’ll find a
pretty village, working dairies,
chocolatiers and the Château
de Gruyères, an 11th-century
castle.
Near Zurich:
Just an hour or so from Zurich
by train, St. Gallen’s Abbey of
St. Gall, a UNESCO World
Heritage Site, is renowned for
its 16th-century medieval
library and grand Baroque
cathedral. Try a traditional
Olma bratwurst or a slice of
the region’s addictive savory
cheesecake along with a
locally brewed beer or glass of
apple wine.

FONTAINEBLEAU
MIAMI BEACH
BY LILLIANA CUNNINGHAM
Fontainebleau, Miami Beach
I
If these walls could talk! From its Rat Pack
roots to the countless movies filmed on
location to its reputation as a celebrity
watering hole, the iconic Fontainebleau
hotel in Miami Beach has reinvented itself time
and again since its opening in 1954. New York
architect Morris Lapidus had a dream of creating
the largest hotel in Miami Beach, which
included 554 guest rooms, a 17,000-square-foot
lobby with bow-tie marble floors and a twostory “Staircase to Nowhere.”
Lapidus’ legacy has been kept alive, as
Fontainebleau still ranks as Miami’s largest hotel
thanks to the addition of two new towers in the
year 2000. The resort now features 1,504 rooms
and suites sprawling across 20 oceanfront acres.
In 2008, Fontainebleau debuted its fouryear, $1 billion renovation and expansion.
Reminiscent of a Las Vegas-style casino, it now
features 12 restaurants and nightclubs, an arcade
of unique boutiques and a massive 40,000square-foot spa, rendering it practically
unnecessary to leave the property at any point
for the duration of your stay.
During the day, the huge freeform pool is
the main attraction. Six types of cabanas are
WHAT’S NEARBY:
available for daily rental, accommodating
everyone from families to bachelor parties,
couples and discreet celebrities.
Dining options range from quaint cafés
for a quick morning croissant to an impressive
line-up of fine dining establishments.
Michelin-vstarred Hakkasan, located on the
fourth-floor rooftop, features a modern
Chinese cuisine, while James Beard Award
recipient Chef Scott Conant’s team serves up
epic spaghetti and other classic Italian fare at
Scarpetta. But that’s not all! Celebrity Chef
Michael Mina operates two equally impressive
eateries here: Michael Mina 74, which features
a sophisticated small-plates menu while roving
trolleys offer shellfish, seasonal vegetables and
more, and StripSteak, the hotel’s newest dining
concept, which prides itself on its quality slabs
of steak, many of which come directly from the
hotel’s on-site aging room and butcher shop.
Evenings are continued at one of the many
bars and lounges (most notable is the Bleau Bar,
the circular bar and lounge area in the hotel’s
main lobby) and keep going well into the earlymorning hours at one of Miami’s most exclusive
nightclubs: LIV.
Miami Children’s Museum: For a rainy day, take a trip to this
fabulous interactive museum featuring 12 galleries with a revolving
door of exhibits ranging from a stimulating two-story imaginary castle,
a miniature hospital and bank, a cruise ship and hands-on art
demonstrations.

Although there’s plenty of action going on
to keep busy, you’ll also enjoy every moment you
spend in your room. All guest rooms are
designed with a clean, beachy palette of crisp
white and sandy beige, and are fully equipped
with flat-screen TVs, plush robes and 22-inch
iMacs offering high-speed Internet access. From
standard rooms to three-bedroom suites and
penthouses, there’s an ideal room to fit every
discerning traveler’s needs—even pets are
allowed! The hotel also caters to large groups
with extensive connecting room options.
With
something
for
everyone,
Fontainebleau is a good fit for any type of
travel, whether it’s a girlfriend getaway, a family
vacation, a romantic weekend or a business trip
(Fontainebleau is a popular host for corporate
conferences). The common trait shared among
these guests is a lively energy and outgoing
spirit. This is a destination for the perfect mix
of fun, sun and blissful relaxation. TL

PANAMA
A happening capital, adventure activities galore and relaxing islands combine to
make this Central American paradise the destination of the moment.
W
hat places Panama at the top of the
current must-visit tourism ladder—
compared to other Central American
locales—centers around its capital’s rise
as a culture hot spot. Panama City first came to
prominence when the Panama Canal, which connects
the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, was built at the turn of
the 20th century, bringing global attention to the
region. Most recently, the city’s growth in economic
strength has led to development that caters to leisure
travelers too, including the opening of fabulous
international hotels like the Waldorf Astoria Panama,
the first for the brand in Latin America.
Panama City is arguably the hippest capital in the
region thanks to a colonial neighborhood at the
southwestern edge of town called Casco Viejo. At first
glance, the district is all about redbrick streets,
centuries-old churches and colorful historic
apartments. But upon closer inspection, Casco Viejo
has transformed into the stomping grounds for
Panama City’s well-heeled locals and in-the-know
foreigners. They hang out at Ego y Narciso—its tables
on Plaza Bolívar are great for tapas (fresh ceviches are
exceptionally popular), drinks and people-watching—
and at Mojitos sin Mojitos, an industrial-looking space
that focuses on beers and burgers.
Navigating Panama City and its surrounding areas
is a breeze thanks to impeccably maintained roads and
motorways, the best in Central America. In less than an
hour’s drive from the capital, you can easily head to the
engineering marvel that is the Panama Canal, visit Frank
Gehry’s latest work of magic at the Biomuseo on the
Amador Causeway, experience Panama’s vast natural
landscape in the Gamboa Rainforest and soak in sand
and sun at world-class beach resorts in Playa Bonita and
Playa Blanca.
Venture further afield to tackle Panamanian
adventures of the outdoorsy kind. Boquete, in the
westernmost Chiriquí Province, is the top pick for
adrenaline enthusiasts. The valley offers up everything
from zip lining and whitewater rafting to more exotic
activities like cloud forest treks. Boquete’s agricultural
splendor is celebrated every January when the Festival
of Flowers and Coffee is hosted to showcase the region’s
production of both.
Panama is also known for fishing and is a haven for
marlin, swordfish and tuna. There are plenty of outfitters
(most of which are along the Pacific Coast in ports like
Boca Chica) that will take you deep-sea fishing, too. And
for those who want to experience the country by plying
its crystal-clear waters in a different way, the San Blas
Islands are the perfect getaway for hopping around
hundreds of white-sand, palm-tree-dotted islands, only
a small portion of which are inhabited.
Visiting Panama has become even easier thanks to
the many major cruise lines that stop here on their
voyages. Colón—where you can see the locks of the
Panama Canal in action—is among the most popular
ports of call.
With so much to see and equal variety in ways to
get there, it’s no wonder that Panama’s stock continues
to rise among the most intrepid of travelers. TL
