Windows Phones do not sync contacts and appointments directly to a local computer via any kind of
USB connection or via ActiveSync or Windows Mobile Device Center. Instead Windows Phones sync
directly to data that is stored in the cloud, that is, it syncs to web-based services, such as
Outlook.com (formerly known as Windows Live), Google, or Exchange Server accounts. Welcome to From My
Pocket
When I got my first windows phone I also planned to continue using and syncing some of my older
Windows Mobile devices to Outlook on my computer. So in anticipation of my first Windows Phone, I
spent some time exploring the Outlook Hotmail Connector as a way to manage my contacts and
appointments on my local computer while also providing a way to make the data available for my
new Windows Phone.
This article is the product of my explorations. In this article you'll find all the information you need
to get the Outlook Hotmail Connector running on your computer. Then you'll be able to sync your
Windows Phone to your Microsoft account, and you'll still be able to enjoy the full functionality of the
Outlook desktop software (and sync your older Windows Mobile devices to your computer).
Set up the Outlook Hotmail Connector
If you use Outlook 2003, 2007, or 2010, you'll need to install the Outlook Hotmail Connector to your
computer. The Outlook Hotmail Connector is an Add-in to Outlook that allows you to sync between
the Outlook desktop software and a Microsoft account (i.e., hotmail, windows live, outlook.com
accounts). If you use Outlook 2013, you won't need to use the Outlook Hotmail Connector since
Outlook 2013 incorporates this functionality into it.
First, download the Outlook Hotmail Connector and install it to your computer
Outlook Hotmail Connector 32-bit
Outlook Hotmail Connector 64-bit (use with the 64-bit version of Outlook 2010 only)
After you've installed the Outlook Hotmail Connector to your computer, you'll be able to create the
syncing relationship between Outlook and your Microsoft account.

from my pocket: Using the Outlook Hotmail Connector
Copy Contact & Calendar data to the Windows Live folders
The Outlook Hotmail Connector only syncs the data that is stored in the Contacts and Calendar
folders within the Windows Live folder in Outlook...The Connector does not sync any data that is
stored in the Personal folder. If you've been using Outlook for a while all your contacts and
appointments are currently stored in folders within your Personal folder. To sync this data to your
Microsoft account, you'll need to copy or move this data from your Personal folders to the newly
created Windows Live folders. Afterwards you need to STOP adding new data or modifying the data
in your Personal folders if you want these additions and edits to be synced to your Microsoft
account.
Copy Contacts from the Local Contact folder to the Windows Live Contacts folder
Open up the Contacts Folder in Outlook's Personal Folders
Display the "Phone List" view
Select Edit > Select All (Ctrl+A)
Select Edit > Copy (Ctrl+C)
Select the Windows Live Contacts folder
Select Edit > Paste (Ctrl+V)
Copy Calendar from the Local Calendar folder to the Windows Live Calendar folder
Open up the Calendar Folder in Outlook's Personal Folders
Display the "All Appointments" view
Select Edit > Select All (Ctrl+A)
Select Edit > Copy (Ctrl+C)
Select the Windows Live Calendar folder
Select Edit > Paste (Ctrl+V)
Now you'll need to change a few Outlook account settings to make the transition as transparent as
possible.

Now you can continue using Outlook to manage your contacts and appointments, continue syncing
your older Windows Mobile devices to your computer, and sync your new Windows Phone to your
Microsoft account. Any changes you make to Outlook or to your Microsoft account will be synced. Your contacts and appointments on your computer, your mobile devices and your Microsoft account
will always be in sync with each other and up-to-date.
NOTE: Before you sync an older Windows Mobile device to your computer, you'll need to delete its
earlier ActiveSync or WMDC partnership and set up a new partnership.
NOTE: If you are still syncing email to Outlook's Personal Folder, you'll need to leave your Personal
Folders open. Within this folder are folders for Calendar, Contacts, etc. Since you won't be using
the Calendar or Contacts folder, you can delete the information that is stored in these folders, but
you won't be able to delete them.

Syncing New Information & Edits
All new and edited data that is associated with your Microsoft account (email, contacts and
appointments) is synced between Outlook and your Microsoft account whenever you send or retrieve
email from within the Outlook desktop software. You can set up a Send/Receive schedule for the
Microsoft account you just created
Outlook 2003: Select Tools > Send/Receive > Send Receive Settings > Define
Send/Receive Groups
Outlook 2007 & 2010: Select Send/Receive > Send/Receive Groups > Define
Send/Receive Groups

from my pocket: Using the Outlook Hotmail Connector
You'll follow the prompts to eventually select your Microsoft account and set up your desired syncing
options. You'll notice that you can set your Send/Receive Groups to sync manually whenever you press the
F9 button or automatically in time intervals you set. You can also perform an automatic send/receive
whenever you exit the Outlook software.
What About Tasks?
When you install Outlook Connector, you'll see a new Tasks folder called "Tasks (This computer

only)." Unfortunately, this is just another local folder. Even though this tasks folder is considered
part of the windows live set of folders it does not get synced to Windows Live. If you plan to continue syncing to an older windows mobile device, you'll want to copy your tasks
from the Tasks in Personal Folders to the Tasks (this computer only) folder.
I rely on tasks to keep me organized and so I had to figure out a way to workaround this huge
deficiency. But I've settled on a workable solution, so stay tuned to the blog. I'll be publishing
another article about how to manage tasks on a Windows Phone that you might find useful.

I really don't know why MS decided not to implement Outlook sync in WP7. MS hasn't
said anything to me to indicate they plan to add Outlook syncing to WP7, but I have
heard an unsubstantiated rumor (from a fairly reliable person who does not work for MS)
that there are plans to do it. Only time will tell the tale....
It was a hassle moving everything to Windows Live, but now that it is there, syncing is
automatic and something I never have to think about, so I'm not sure I would even go
back to syncing to a desktop computer again.

Since I decided to connect my Live account to Facebook so I can read friendscomments on my
Windows Live home page so when I look at my Live contact list it also contains every person
or group that I follow on Facebook whether there is an email address or phone number
available or not. I can always delete the Facebook link and then sync Live to a WP7 phone to
get the real contacts that I want but if I add the FB link back in I don't know if the Facebook
contacts will get added to the phone anyway if I sync again.
If MS Live wants people to connect with Facebook maybe they ought to provide a way to
separate their Live contacts easily (I want these on WP7 and I don't want these on WP7) and
be able to keep them separate.

It's all or nothing at this time. If you set up your windows phone to sync to Facebook,
all the Facebook contacts will be synced over to your phone. I know that request have
been made to allow users to filter the contacts that get syncd to a phone, so we'll have
to see what features get added to windows phone in future releases.
If you have lots of Facebook contacts for people you don't really want on your phone, I
can see how this would be a problem. For those FB contacts that are actually friends and
co-workers, you may already have their contact information on your phone, so you'll
have some duplication that you can correct by linking the duplicate contacts together.

I wonder if you could set up two windows live accounts for yourself that you could sync
to your phone. That way you'd double the amount of contacts you could have on the
phone. I'm not sure that the Outlook Connector can accommodate two different windows
live accounts. I played around with that a few weeks ago and didn't make much progress

Rufus, I've been mulling this over and trying a few things out that might
help you find a workable solution. So far the only thing I've discovered
is that there is a way to print your contacts and their related notes to
OneNote. When you do this, though the notes are not editable, it's
similar to printing to an Adobe file.
But if you want to give it a try and if you use OneNote 2010, which can
be synced to SkyDrive and in turn synced to your phone, all you need to
do is:
Open up Outlook, select the Contacts file > select Edit > Select All
Then select File > Print > choose the Memo Style > then select the
down arrow to the right of the Printer, and select "Send to OneNote"
Select OK and wait - you've got a lot of contacts so it will probably take
a few minutes. You might want to try this with a few contacts to see if
the end result is acceptable to you.
If you don't want to do that, another thing you could do is to export the
contacts to a CSV file, specifying just the fields that are most important
to you (i.e., FName, LName, Notes). Then you can open up the CSV file
in Excel. Do a little formatting, so you can read your notes easily, and
save it as an Excel file, which you can then copy over to your phone.
Neither of these solutions are optimal, I know, but it's the best I've

When you use the Outlook Connector to sync your Contacts & Appointments from Outlook
on your computer to Windows Live, the categories sync with the Appointments, you can
see them if you open up an appointment to edit it (you will not be able to edit the
category - it is a view only field). You won't be able to view the category for your
Contacts (if that's even synced over to Windows Live). When I noticed that the
categories weren't included in my Contacts, I spent quite a bit of time setting up
categories in Windows Live and assigning categories to all my contacts in Windows Live. So after a lot of manual effort all my Contacts have categories in Windows Live, but when
I got my Windows Phone, I found out that Windows Phone does not support categories at
all.

customers who do not sync with their PCs. This is all well and good but MS needs to remember
that there are a lot of people (like me also) out there that needs to be able to cable sync with

got it set up, it's working great and I prefer syncing my phone to my windows live
account....I never have to think about syncing....it just happens and it's a beautiful thing.
I don't think I'll ever want to be tied to my computer like that again! I also like being
able to log in to my Windows Live account from any computer to check and update my
calendar.
But when I'm going to take a serious look at my Calendar and do serious work on the
calendar, I much prefer using Outlook over the web-based Windows Live Calendar. It's a
nicer, richer interface. So, for me, the Outlook Connector is a miracle. Using it lets me
have my cake and eat it too.
I agree that my workarounds for handling tasks are workarounds and I'd prefer to have
my Tasks sync through Outlook Connector to my Windows Live Account and in turn sync
tasks to my phone. I hope that functionality will be added to windows phone, but until
then, I've got a perfectly good workaround that meets my needs. Rather than whine and
complain about the missing functionality, I prefer to find ways to get my work done. I'm not sure what you mean when you say "no photos can be synced." Photos are
synced via Zune to my computer and I can set an option in the phone itself to
automatically sync my pictures to my Windows Live account.
As far as notes go, I stopped syncing Outlook notes a long, long time ago because
syncing those notes just caused problems for me. At that time, I moved all my notes to
PhatNotes. But PhatNotes does not work on my new windows phone and so I've taken a
good long look at OneNote, and you know what? OneNote is a superb replacement. It
provides a lot more flexiblity and featues than Outlook Notes ever provided AND you can
export notes from Outlook and import them into OneNote pretty easily. If you haven't
checked out OneNote, you're really missing out on a great application. And the syncing
of OneNote between the computer to SkyDrive and from SkyDrive to the phone is very
nicely done.
I miss categories, but since I am using WinMilk to handle my tasks, which are synced
directly from Outlook to Remember the Milk, I've still got all my tasks set up with
categories. I've always relied on categories the most when working with Tasks, so this
was important to me. Not having categories in my Contacts makes it a bit harder to
work my way through my contacts, but it's not as big a deal as I originally thought it
would be. I hope that future iterations of the windows phone OS will add a better way
to categorize and filter contacts. I hardly used categories with my appointments I found
using categories with appointments was a superfluous, tedious and unnecessary effort, so
I'd practically abandoned assigning categories to calendar items some time ago. I keep my contacts list to around 400-500 contacts I move old contacts out of my active
contacts 2 or 3 times a year to an archive folder in Outlook. For me and probably a lot
of other users, there's really no reason to carry around hundreds of contacts for people I
hardly ever talk to on my mobile phone. If I ever need to contact those folks, I've got
their info on my computer..

This belief that you have to continue copying data back and forth every day is based on
some wrong information and you are not the only one that has heard it. I wish I could
find the source of this misinformation and challenge them and put an end to such
foolishness altogether, but it seems to be a commonly held myth about the the Outlook
Connector. When you set up Outlook Connector, you only have to copy your Contacts &
Appointments to Windows Live one time and one time only. After that any changes
to data or any data that is added (new contacts or new appointments) either from
Outlook or from Windows Live, will be synced back and forth between Outlook and your
Windows Live account. What a pain it would be to have to copy data every day back and
forth - it would be a nightmare! The Outlook Connector works similar to ActiveSync, only
better!
Pictures that you've associated with contacts within Outlook do not sync over to Windows
Live. The reason for this is that Windows Live Contacts were originally used exclusively
with Windows Live Messenger. The only pictures you'll see included with contacts in
Windows Live Contacts are people that are on your Windows Live Messenger contact list
AND the only way those pictures get placed there are if the people put them there there is no way you can add pictures to contacts within Windows Live.
Now, since you already have a WM6.5 phone, you don't even have to go through the
rigamarole of copying your contacts & appointments over to Windows Live and you don't
even have to go through the rigamarole of setting up your pictures again for your
contacts on your new phone! You'll still need to set up Outlook Connector to keep
Outlook and Windows Live in sync with each other, but you can move all your contacts
and related pictures and your appointments to your windows live account by syncing your
WM6.5 phone directly to your Windows Live account! The pictures will not be displayed
in your windows live account, but they are there and when you sync your new windows
phone to your windows live account all that data, including your pictures, will be synced
over to your new phone. To do this, all you need to do is set up the new Hotmail
Exchange ActiveSync connection on your WM6.5 phone just like it is described in this
article.
Your @live.co.uk mail address seem to indicate you've already got a windows live ID. Windows Live has gone through several different iterations....used to be called "passport"
and before that it was called something else (but I can't remember). If you've ever used
Windows Live Messenger or it's predecessor MSN Messenger, then you've already got a
Windows Live account. You can check to see if your @live.co.uk email account is already
set up as a windows live account by going to the Windows Live sign in page and select
the "Sign up" button. Input your email address in the "use your email address" box and
hit the enter button. If that email address is already set up as a windows live id, you'll
see a message "xxxxxxx@xxxxxxxx is already a Windows Live ID. If this is your ID, you
can use it to sign in." Then you can go back to the Windows Live ID login page and just
input your email address & password into the boxes there - if you don't know your
password, you can select the "forgot your password?" option. Have you downloaded the Outlook Connector software and installed it to your computer? Even if you don't have a windows phone yet, you can still set everything up (and you
may find you actually prefer syncing your WM6.5 directly to your Windows Live account
and letting Outlook Connector keep things in sync for you - you'll get to experience how
well this works with your old phone before you run out and buy a windows phone 7).

used to put alot of notes in the Contacts notes, but when my job changed I
stopped doing it and came up with another method that used software outside
of Outlook to track such things. The only thing I can recommend at this time
is to move all your contact notes to a OneNote notebook. Then you can link
the OneNote Note to that applies to the contact within Outlook. Doing this
would take a manual effort, but once done it would probably work pretty well
and you could always sync the OneNote Notebook to the phone. Of course
the link between the Contact and the Note in OneNote would not be
accessible on the phone, but since the notes could be organized by contact
name it would be easy enough to find them.
You can still download your work email to your computer. You can have it
both ways...just keep the POP3 settings for your email in Outlook and then
you can download the email to your computer and then make sure you leave
the downloaded email on the server for some period of time so that the email
is still accessible to be downloaded to the phone.
I miss categories too, but I still have them on my tasks since I am using
WinTask, MilkSync, and Remember the Milk to manage my tasks on my

was really important for me. I use categories to a lesser degree on my
Contacts mostly to filter my contacts, and I use categories to a much lesser
degree with appointments. I hope to use categories with my contacts on my
windows phone again, but I have no idea if that will happen. If Microsoft
doesn't provide a way to do it, maybe a third party developer will come up

correct? Under filename it list not available. So where are my files? Is it correct then that I am
no longer using the pst files for anything? Is Microsoft planning on retiring outlook like they did
with outlook express?
I am trying to decide if not conveniently getting my calendar, contacts, notes, task etc. to

windows live and be stored in the windows live sent folder. In that scenario, and
assuming you've moved your contacts and appointments to Windows Live, you could
close the local .pst tile and not use it at all.
But there is no requirement that you make the Windows Live email be your default
inbox. If you prefer to continue downloading your email directly to Outlook on your
computer, then you can continue doing that (That is what I am doing). I doubt Microsoft is planning to discontinue Outlook - they continue to upgrade the
software along with the Office applications (there is Outlook 2010 now). Outlook Express
was replaced by Windows Live Mail
Once you set up Outlook Connector to sync your data to your Windows Live account,
you'll see how very convenient this mode of syncing really is. Syncing now is an after
thought....it just happens and happens very well and it is now something I never have to

If you want your email to be in your local email .pst file, why not set up the email as a
POP3 account within Outlook and just download the email to Outlook. Seems to be
setting up a Rule adds a layer of complication you don't need and could create some
problems for you.
I don't know all the mechanics and background processes that go on with Outlook
Connector, so I really can't give you much information about whether it runs like an
exchange server. My impression is that it actually downloads and store data on the local
computer and that data is refreshed (synced) - there can be a short time lag between
the time you enter stuff on the computer and the time it gets posted to the Windows
Live account.

Am I understanding you correctly that once I copy all my calendar and contact items from my
current default personal folders pst file to the hotmail/live account I can leave the default email and data files as they were and just continue as I was except to now use the hotmail
contacts and calendar folders for new contacts and appointment. And then whenever I
send/receive to my hotmail account they will sync with window live and eventually Windows
Phone & if I decide to purchase one.
If my pst file is my default data file would any contacts and appointments sent to me then go
to the pst file and not the hotmail ost file? If the person sending me an meeting would it go to
the hotmail calendar if they sent it to the hotmail email address?
Some of my new test calendar sync but the last ones have not. Any suggestion what the main
items that could go wrong for me to check?
You did a great in explaining what to do. It seems to me that Microsoft should have just as

I've received a few appointment invitations via email and I have noticed that when I

through this semester's pile of grading, I'll have more time and plan to look into it some
more.
In regards to your question about the new calendar test sync, where some of the data
synced but some of it didn't. I don't really know what to tell you. I didn't mess around
with test data....After I set up the Outlook Connector on my computer I just copied and
pasted ALL my calendar data from my personal calendar over to the Windows Live
calendar, so all the data was there. I didn't (and haven't) yet deleted all the data from
my old calendar because I wanted to make sure the Outlook Connector worked correctly. Now after I've been using it for several weeks (probably 2 months now), I am confident
that everything is syncing so I am planning to delete all the items in my personal
calendar. If I ran into a problem like the one you describe, I would look at it record by
record to see if I could find some kind of pattern and that is what I recommend you do. If you can find a pattern, then you can usually figure out a solution. Do you see any
commonalities between the data that is not syncing to your Windows Live Calendar?
I'm glad I was able to help you. One of the reasons I created this blog (almost 3 years

going locally into my pst file on my laptop. My personal live mail alsocomes in to my pst data

I do hope that MS make some changes to their system like allowing more than 1024
characters in th enote section of a contact. I looked at one note and it seems too much for
what I need. I also wish that they would allow the use of categories in contacts which I miss
as well as the syncing of contacts photos in the simple way that activsync does. Here's hoping
some of these things will be addressed in the January or February updates that seem to

Syncing data from your phone to Windows Live uses SSL encryption, but you need to be
sure to follow common best practices (use a secure password that you change regularly,
etc etc) top protect the data that is stored there. And you should also be sure to NOT
include any highly confidential, sensitive information or regulated information (such as
HIPAA data) with the data that is synced to Windows Live.

Once you get the Outlook Hotmail Connector set up to work between Outlook and your

FYI there are 2 known issues I havecome up against. I am using Outlook 2007 on XP SP3. I
had (still have an Omnia II on Windows Mobile 6.5, and now have an Omnia 7 on Windows
Phone 7.
Outlook Hotmail connector can cause Outlook send and receive to hang. On start up it sends
and receives, then freezes on the last message. When you shut down Windows a
ThorConnWndClass error flashes up. I uninstalled the connector and resolved the problem. I
will try reinstalling later and see if it recurs.
2nd issue is around language, Zune tags and Live IDs. If you initialise a new Windows phone,
and set up a new Live ID (ie you do not already have one) then things run fine and set up in
the country and language you choose. If you already had an ID (as I did) it will log on to that.
So why is this a problem? Well, for example, my existing Live ID is in UK, and I get a new
phone here in France where I am working. It jumps to the conclusion I want to keep to my
existing ID and blocks me out of French language Marketplace apps. Many other European
users have hit the same snag and MS say that at present the only solution is to create a new
Live ID, a new Zune tag, factory reset your phone and set up to your new ID. No way
currently of moving between languages, tags or IDs. Have heard though that MS may be on
the case….
Hope my tiny contribution may be of some use.

The marketplace / country issue is the sort of thing one gets used to, even though one doesn't
like it. Scots find all UK TV very London centric, and in Europe in general we have to
understand how few US folks get their heads round countries, languages etc. Ah well..... like
you say, usually these issues eventually creep far enough up the priority list and get sorted.
Overall I love the phone, and the Cloud sync. Takes an attitude shift, but once tunned in to
the idea, it is great.

I think Microsoft's geographical differences and limitations have been greatly magnified
with this convergence of services into windows phone 7, don't you. I've been pretty
oblivious to the difficulties others who live in other parts of the world experience til now,
but now I'm hearing about it all the time. Perhaps this convergence of services across
the world will make it a higher priority.
One of my friend's favorite responses when people complain about the differences in
windows phone 7 is that "one must learn to adapt to new technology." Now that I've
had a shift in attitude and learned ways to adapt to windows phone 7, I'm very happy

Sad that we will have to wait 18-24 months for results.
After all warnings to business about Cloud storing, hopefully Nokia will add other options for
sync so that the WF7 really can be an alternative to the other phones on the market.

Hi Julie,
Many thanks for your hard work! I´ve been reading blogs for two weeks now and I´ve decided
to get my WF7 phone this weekend because of yours. So thanks again. But after 20 hours of
setting up my new HTC Trophy, reading and re-reading your blog and trying, making synctests, i still do have some doubts. I hope you can help.
I have office 2007 Enterprise Edition, installed the connector and followed your instructions. I
´ve got my professional email account [email protected] and my ....@hotmail account. My calendar
and contacts seem syncing just fine (at least most of the times), but the “Email/Inbox folders
and subfolders syncing” I couldn´t sort out yet. I copied my whole folder structure from local
folder (.pst) to the windows live folder in outlook. After a while it synced to Windows
live/hotmail and replicated the folder structure, BUT, not all my emails within the folder
synced. 2 or 3 folders syncedcompletely, all others remained empty in Windows Live. The
following error message shows in Server Status detailed report:
Time: 21/02/2011 01:31:23
Error in Mail
Error with Send/Receive.
There was an error synchronizing your folder hierarchy. Error : 8007000e.
So here are some general questions about this issue:
- Is there some limitation in folder size/folder structure, etc?
- Does outlook connector sync emails from subfolders, even the ones from the past?
- What could be the reason that it just synced 2 folders randomly?
- If I add/delete/reorganize folders in Windows Live, are these changes replicated in the
Outlook folder automatically?
- Are all sent items in outlook being synced to Windows Live sent items folder?
- What prevails? The most recent changes anywhere or changes made in Windows Live?
Another question has to do with sending/replying emails from my WF7 phone. So, i set up
Windows live as the center of receiving and sending emails. It syncs with Outlook connector
and with my WF7. I added my professional [email protected] account in Windows Live as well and
set it as default sending email (works fine in windows live) I added the ...@hotmailcom account
to my phone and receive/see the same emails and folders as in Windows Live. When i get an
email, personal or professional, and i would like to reply from my phone with my professional
[email protected] address/account, which in Windows Live is set as default, i doesn´t work. It
always sends emails through my hotmail account, means my clients would receive a reply from
my personal email address. The only alternative i found is to set up my professional account in
my phone, but then i cant reply, since the mail isn´t in that account in my phone. Any hints?
Or is this another limitation of WF7. Thank you ahead for your time

You won't copy your email to the windows live folder. If you want to sync your email to
your windows live account, you'll need to login to your account and set up your email
options there. If you want to download email to your phone, you'll set up the specific
account details on your phone. The ability to manage all the folders that you use with
your email is dependent on the type of email you have. POP3 email will not allow you to
sync messages that are sent from your phone to your windows live account, but if you
use Hotmail instead to manage your email then any sent email from your phone will also
show up in your windows live account.
You've listed out a bunch of questions in your comment and this is not an appropriate

In the artilcle I recommend that you delete the Address Book because until I deleted that

Is it possible to install and use the sync features of Outlook Hotmail Connector while still

I’ve disabled all the Outlook ActiveSync options. The only thing I’m sync’ing are my 3rd party
Folder files. I’ve tried installing Outlook Hotmail Connector; it runs through a wizard install
without asking any questions or seeing and added menu icon for connector. The install runs
through to Finish.. I’ve then manually added my Window Live e-maul account; I’ve manually
copied my contacts database into the new Hotmail contacts and gone through an
Export/Import csv file to Windows Live too.
I don’t see any indicators of Outlook Hotmail Connector being installed. I don’t see any Outlook
icons, no prompts and no sync between Outlook and Windows Live. Is it because ActiveSync is
installed? If so, am I just screwed in trying to have a functional smart phone that runs MS OS
platform for my 3rd party business software?
I need to use ActiveSync for business 3rd party applications on my old smartphone and need
to get my new WP7 setup and as functional as MS design will permit for a business user.
I’m using Outlook 2010 and Windows OS 7.

Seems to me you can export all your Gmail information to a csv file. Then
you can import that data to Outlook or to your Windows Live account. Then
you'd turn off all the Gmail connectivity you've got going on with Outlook.
What 5 different ids do you have? Are these 5 different windows live

It did create a new SPAMfighter folder in Hotmail, and its using that rather than my

Enter m.hotmail.com in the Server address field. Tap Next
Select the data to sync. Hotmail supports all 4 data types via ActiveSync.

Recent days, however, when I edit contacts (change name, for instance, or phone number),
the changes are not updated to Hotmail. I can't delete old contacts, too. Only if I make
changes in Hotmail, they get to the two Outlooks.
I tried re-installing Connector, I made sure I use the latest version.
Can you please advise how I can have a bi-directional sync between the Outlooks and Hotmail?

I am using Outlook 2010 and it's syncing perfectly with Windows Live. I have followed your
directions by setting the Windows Live account to default in the Data tab. I have deleted the
Outlook Contacts from the Address Book. I deleted ActiveSync partnerships on the PC and the

However, aftercompleting the ActiveSync partnership wizard, no synchronizing occurs and I get
an error message with a code, "Support Code:8501004." I have tried syncing only one folder
at time, after rebooting, after deleting partnerships again, but with no luck.
Google searches bring articles relating to Exchange Server issues, but I don't use Ex Server. I
think it has something to do with ActiveSync not recognizing my data file.
Any suggestions? And thanks for all your help with thecommunity!

contact file which does not allow the sync over (no error messages of any sort, just doesnt
appear on the other side). I have also tried to examine the difference between a working

As far as I can tell, the Job Title field that is in Outlook does not sync over to the

It wasn't so straightforward for contacts, but I think this is what you'll do:
Select Tools > Email Accounts > View or change existing directories or address

books) If so, remove the personal address book.
I hope that helps. Let me know if you need more help and I'll go back and look at my

Your info for 2003 has been very helpful, but I have a few questions that I have
not seen answered. First, related to the contacts comment, when I go to the e-mail
accounts per above I see only one address book - Outlook Address Book - Type
MAPI - there is no second one. However, within Outlook 2003 under the folders
section on the left of the screen if I click on the contacts button I see two sets of
contacts - one just labelled contacts and the other is the one for windows live. Both
have the same content. Should I delete the one labeled contacts and now just use
the one for the windows live account? Will that accomplish what you were talking
about here?
The other questions are about the calendar and which I have not seen addressed
here so far. When I click on the calendar button on the left column of Outlook 2003
I get a list of 5 calendars that appear there now. One is my original calendar with
all items in it. The next one is labeled Alan's Calendar in Alan Windows Live (the
Alan Windows Live being the name given to my windows live connection) which has
exactly the same content. Then there is one labelled US Holidays in Alan Windows
Live which has holidays in it. Then there is another one that is labelled Birthday
Calendar in Alan Windows Live which has no content. Finally, there is one labelled
Calendar in Alan Windows Live which contains only fixed items like birthdays,
anniversaries, etc. All 4 of these were generated when I followed the copy calendar
from local calendar instructions in your 2003 info. When the sync occurred between
the windows live link and the phone, everything transferred over (YEAH!!) with
doubles on the birthday anniversary front. So, here are the questions:
1) Where do I make my changes, additions or deletions from my calendar so they
sync - to the Alan's calendar one or to my original calendar?
2) If I delete the last one mentioned (Calendar in Alan Windows Live) would that
then remove the doubles that I got for those items in the sync?
3) Should I also delete the one labelled Birthday Calendar, since it has no content?
If I do #2 & 3, that would leave me with three calendars - the original, the Alan's
in Windows Live, and the US Holidays. If I do 1 - 3 then only the Alan's in Windows
Live and the US Holidays would be left.
So, thanks for seeing if this whole thing makes sense and advising. I want to make
sure I understand it and get it right - before I try to set this up for my wife's
phone!

Thanks for this site. I have recently purchased a Windows Phone and was on the verge of
returning it before I stumbled onto your information. Before I plunge into the process of
syncing everything I wanted to confirm and overview a few things.
1)Presently, I sync my PC and my laptop emails, contacts, calendar, and tasks by simply
copying my .pst file from PC to laptop. My PC is Win7, Outlook 2007 and the laptop is XP,
Outlook 2003. If I am understanding this right, once I install and use the Connector, my
contacts and calendars will no longer be on the .pst files but the emails and tasks will. Thus, I
would need to continue to sync as I do now for those items and install the connector on both
machines to sync the PC, laptop, Windows live, and phone.
2)I noticed that the Outlook 2007 Connector is only available in 32 bit format. My PC is 64 bit.
Will downloading the 32 bit version present a problem?
3)Assuming the Connector installs and syncs correctly, will it change any settings or formats
from my existing contacts and calendars to the newly created ones, or will the appearance be
just as it is now (it is not easy to remember how to configure certain appearance items in
Outlook).
4)On the advice of the hardware support team, I have previously imported the contact and
calendar information to Win Live using the CSV and ICS formats. If I download and sync using
the Connector, will it recognize what I am doing or will it create duplicates? If so, I am better
off deleting everything and starting over.
5)I'm a bit confused about this manual sync issue that many posters seem to be having,
forcing frequent F9s. If everything works as it should, is any manual syncing required?
Thanks for your time and once again for creating this thread.

I'll try to answer your question in the order presented:
1) That sounds about right. The Outlook Hotmail Connector can be used to sync multiple
computers to a single windows live account. When you use the Outlook Hotmail
Connector, you'll stop posting Contacts and Appointments to your local PST database and
only post items to the Windows Live account, which uses an OST file (this is so you can
work with the data locally when you are not connected to the internet). Since you are
syncing this data to Windows Live, the data will be synced up to all connected
computers. If you want to maintain tasks & email on all your machines, copying the PST
file should work the way it has worked in the past.
2) I've never used a 64 bit version of Outlook and Office, so I can't speak from first hand
knowledge, but I don't think the 32 bit version of the Outlook Hotmail Connector will
work with the 64 bit version of Outlook. You'll probably need to either
uninstall the 64 bit version of Office 2007 (and Outlook) from your
computer and then install the 32 bit version of Office 2007 before you can
use the Outlook Hotmail Connector. Apparently the installation CD contains
both versions of Office on it and you can specify at time of installation the
version to install on the computer; or
http://frommypocket.pocketprimer.com/2010/11/11/outlook-hotmail-connector.aspx[14/11/2013 3:19:48 PM]
from my pocket: Using the Outlook Hotmail Connector
upgrade Office to Office 2010. This option is preferable to the other option
because you will be able to maximize your use of windows phone by doing
so. That is, windows phone is tightly integrated with Office 2010 - you can
sync OneNote 2010 notebooks, Excel 2010, Word 2010, and PowerPoint
2010 directly to your SkyDrive account and then the files can be synced to
your phone via the Office hub. This works very well (it's really quite
amazing) and I upgraded to Office 2010 just so I could enjoy all this great
integration with SkyDrive & Windows Phone.
3) None of your formats will change when you sync to Windows Live via the Outlook
Hotmail Connector. However you will have to re-create any views you may have created
for your Contacts and Appointments since the views are not sharable with the new
Windows Live account in Outlook. It's been a while since I synced multiple computers to
a Windows Live account, so I don't think you'll lose any data, but you might want to
check a few records carefully to make sure all data elements synced from one computer
through Windows Live to another connected computer. Users have complained about
lengthy notes in Contacts and Appointment records that were truncated when they synced
the records to Windows Live, but I've never used the notes feature of either enough for it
to make any impact on my data (I keep all my lengthy notes in OneNote Notebooks)
4) If you've already imported a csv file of your contacts and appointments into your
Windows Live account, then you can skip the part of my blog article that describes how
to copy this data from your personal Outlook account to the newly created Windows Live
account and then you shouldn't have to worry about any duplication in the new Windows
Live database.
5) I don't understand this belief that using the Outlook Hotmail connector requires a
continous manual syncing for it to work. Just be sure you set up the Send/Receive
options for the windows live account so it will sync in regular intervals - even though you
won't be sync any email, you still need to set this option - and things should be fine.
Good luck! If you run into any problems, please let me know.

One thing is annoying but by no means catastrophic. When the connector added

Windows Live as the default. I have the settings to clear the deleted items on exit.
It is not deleting the items for my primary email account (AT&T) and I cannot find

I don't know why this is not working correctly in your computer.
You might try disabling the option, exit Outlook, the open Outlook

Hi Julie, thanks for a great article. I am not sure that my issue is covered, but perhaps it is
very simple.
I have WP7.5 and all my contacts on my sim card are now in Windows Live on the phone. I do
not have a Windows Live email account.
I use Office 2010 on the desktop along with Office 365. I have another set of contacts within
Outlook.
I would like to transfer all the phone contacts to Outlook (not worried about duplicates, can
handle them).
Do I need to install Windows Live on my PC and then create a temporary email address and
then use the Outlook Connector to move the contacts from Windows Live to Outlook?
Thanks in advance.

just so you can sync those contacts to your phone.
If you want to keep your personal contacts separate from those in your Office 365

your windows live account. If you've already got a windows live account (and you may
have one already and just don't know it - do you log into any of Microsoft's forums or
have you ever used any of Microsoft's other services, like Instant Messenger, or

activate any of the email options under a windows live account and so there's no reason
to create a temporary email account. The Windows Live account I use as the primary
account on my phone is one I created 10+ years ago before there was even any kind of
hotmail or live mail to go along with it. That windows live account actually uses my
private mindspring.com email address (which is not a hotmail or live address) as my
username, and I have never activated the email options for that account.

You are doing a fantastic job helping people with Outlook and Hot Mail. You really are a great

Outlook 2003 and have synced it to Hotmail using the Outlook connector. My contacts and
email are synced and working nicely. I copied my Outlook calendar from my desktop over to
hotmail and it shows up on the hotmail calendar. The problem is when I sync my Laptop to
Hotmail using Outlook connector only some of the appointments come in. I can't see any
particular data that would cause some events not to show up on the laptop. If I open the
event in Hotmail and change something then the event will appear on the laptop. I can make a
new event on the laptop and it shows in hotmail. I can make a new event in hotmail and it will
show on the laptop. It just won't show all the imported events. I don't want to have to go
through all the events in hotmail and open change and save them to get them to show. I tired
running scanost.exe but apparently the ost used by hotmail is not supported. Any help would
be greatly appreciated. Other and this and a few quirks already mentioned in your blog, this
seems like a good solution.

I don't really know what to tell you. You might try running the ScanPST utility on your
Personal Outlook file before you copy it over to the Windows Live OST file. Then you
could delete the calendar data in the OST file and copy it over again from your PST
Calendar data. I have seen similar issues happen with Contacts too and, like you, I haven't been able to
find a pattern when this happens.
Luckily it only seems to happen when the data is first converted and doesn't seem to be
a continuous problem moving forward.

sources and not individual calendar items. So if you set up multiple email+accounts on
the phone, you can set a color for each account from which the data is synced. If you
sync to a work Exchange server you can set blue for those calendar items; and if you
sync to a google personal personal calendar, you can set red for those calendar items; if
you sync your wife's calendar, you can set green for those calendar items and so forth.

Hi...Hope this is still active! I followed your instructions, however using Outlook 2013, there is
no way to "cut/past" the contact/calendar info from the default folders into the ""Hotmail"

one sitting there...and I don't know if that even works?
Also, when I setup another "Hotmail" account, it uses my existing .outlook email address, and
thus sends email to my POP .outlook account AND my "Hotmail" sync account. I set the POP
account as the default, but all email activity still goes through the Hotmail and therefore I have
duplicates just sitting in there. What am I doing wrong, or is this just the way it works?
I also use "folders" in my default account, so I want my POP to be the default email service.
geez....I hope this all makes sense to you.

Also, is there any additional, updated information related solely to Outlook 2013 and Windows

I used the Office 365 beta for months and they didn't do a very good job with
categories in Outlook 2013. I ended up having to recreate each category and add
one to every contact.
Microsoft seems to place a low emphasis on categories and I don't understand why.
I sort that way because I can't always remember the electrician I used 5 years ago
and I can minimize the entire contact list to a smaller number and locate things
more quickly.
