Strength. Service. Specialized. That’s why. Team 9 Just for Team 9 & Birthdays It is with saddened hearts to announce that Erney Borysko passed away on the morning of February 18, 2012. Erney had just completed 25 years of service with Hi-Way 9 Express Ltd. Erney started with Team 9 doing tractor P&D work in our Calgary terminal and worked his way to dispatch with Alvin Kohut, helping to insure our customers’ freight was picked up and shipped to their destinations. Erney was the gruff guy on the end of the phone that would always pick it up, and in his abrupt voice, say a direct “Hi-Way 9”-that was it. When we came up with the plan to say, as we do today, ‘thank you for calling Hi-Way 9, Erney speaking”, he was skeptical it was realistic-and he let us know his thoughts. But being the team member he was, he gave it a try. Well we all know what the outcome was– as always, Erney was able to adjust. We couldn’t help but reminisce about one of our favorite moments for Erney. It was during a stay at the Foothills Hospital for heart surgery. We all knew he was a fan of Marilyn Monroe so in an effort to cheer him up, we called a local talent agency and had Marilyn go to his bedside and serenade Erney with all her best including “Diamonds are a girls best friend”. His grandson Dustin says even recently Erney has still told people about his honor of having Marilyn in his hospital room. There are many more stories of his time with Team 9, and we are sure we all have our favorites. All we can do now is cherish those moments as we will not be creating any new ones. Erney fought hard for the past 6 years with first colon cancer and most recently lung cancer which he succumbed to. He can now join a badass group of Alvin Kohut, John Lucey, Bob Ball and Frank Kohut and cause trouble again , and who knows, maybe he will meet the real Marilyn now. He was a great friend of the Kohut family and we will miss him, as we are sure you all will in one way or another. Tab is an incredibly hard worker who shows up to work with a great attitude, organizing the shop and ensuring the equipment has minimal down time. He appreciates Hi-Way 9 “because you have a name in the company-not just a number. It’s a very tight knit community-a nice environment to be in”. Andrew (right) is kept busy not only fixing problems in a timely manner, but orders parts and takes care of operations on a daily basis. He says he is impressed with how Hi-Way 9 excels for its customers, and shows excellent commitment to its employees. Looking back at their time with Team 9, Tab’s fondest memory of Team 9 is last year’s golf tournament. Enjoying the event with his fellow team members outside of the regular work structure was “awesome”. Andrew recalls a great time working side-by-side with Darrell Kohut. See- ing that work needed to be done, Darrell rolled up his sleeves and helped align the trucks in the shop for the afternoon with Andrew-helping create a great memory that Andrew has not forgotten. Behind the scenes, and mostly behind closed doors, these two Team 9 members work diligently to help maintain and keep Hi-Way 9’s fleet in the peak of it’s performance capabilities. Without their part in the intricate system of Hi-Way 9, the efficiencies and ultimate reputation would not be as reliable nor steadfast as they are today. Thank-you, TAB and STAR-your strong work ethic and great attitudes are attributes Hi-Way 9 certainly appreciates and values! Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success. Henry Ford Shepell·fgi’s Financial Support Services are available for you and your family. Compiled of selectively chosen employees-persons that not only wish to complete a job, but desire to carry out their tasks beyond the mediocre level of many in the transportation industry. THESE are the people that Team 9 employs. And these are the people that show PRIDE. From coveralls to safety vests, Hi-Way 9 hats to uniforms, Team 9 members are the walking bill-boards that prove HiWay 9 truly is “The Carriers that Care”. Congratulations to Abraham Barry, for not only being in complete uniform on the job, but wearing your seatbelt on a forkliftTHAT’S a true sign of a Team 9 member that has pride...and cares! Shevan Ali –Streamline-I was collecting on a shipment that you had picked up and delivered for N/Take. The manager wanted to make a point of how professional and polite you were. Thank-you! I know you most often hear complaints but you rarely hear the good news. Please let them know how much I appreciated their efforts to reduce my stress. Dennis Schock –Deck-Way-Yesterday we assigned you a lot of pick ups in Edmonton with a short amount of time to get them all in. You were able to get all the pick ups done correctly, professionally and on time. Keep up the great work! The staff I dealt with are: Julianne Hayden, Yvonne Capson and to a lesser extent Samantha Loranger. I dealt with Yvonne for the most part and she was wonderful. Steve Zylstra-Red Deer-You are always willing to help me when I need it, and always willing to learn something new. The more you learn the easier everyone’s job is. Keep up the good work buddy! Name: Birger Mackeprang Thank you, Larry Clark Director of Student Services Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School 403-938-8313 Name: Kelly Woods Abraham Barry Lee Oliver The Carriers That Care! Cassandra Chapman –Drumheller-Just want to let you know that you are doing a great job. You are always happy when you answer the phone about damages and missing freight, and usually have the customer laughing by the end of the call. Also, you are always on top of the undelivered list which makes my job a lot easier. Thank-you for all your hard work. I have over the last two days dealt with three of your employees regarding a delivery to my home. I have no experience managing a delivery of this magnitude and it created some logistical issues. I think it is important for you to know that each of the ladies dealt with me professionally, with patience and humor. As a manager you could not have asked for more from an employee. In fact, they went out of their way to look for solutions for me. Heather Colberg, director of Hi-Way 9, has challenged every Team 9 member to do one hour or one good thing a month or volunteer to one event for 12 hours to cover your year and send an email to Sylvia at [email protected] (or a note in the mail to the Drumheller office) and let her know what you did to do your part. She is having a column each month and your cause will be highlighted.-if you believe enough to spend your time & efforts, create some awareness! With approximately 500 team members in all the divisions under the Hi-Way 9 Group of Companies, if everyone gives one hour per month divided by 24 hours, it would be 225 DAYS PER YEAR THE HI-WAY 9 TEAM WOULD BE VOLUNTEERING. WOULD THAT NOT BE WONDERFUL?!? Have you ever wondered why Hi-Way 9 takes traffic violations so seriously? According to the above, the likelihood of this being “just one time” is slim to none. Weather was not really a factor as it was reasonable. We are starting to implement back-up cameras to help reduce our backing issues. We have a new factor on the front and that is creeping at traffic lights. We must pay attention at all times. Our safety team will be working with that on March road checks. We were lucky to avoid a possible fatal incident on hwy 14 as driver reacted as best as situation would allow. Our lost product was unfortunate but driver had exceeded securement standards but we still had an incident. We have since implemented new procedures to handle this type of product. I remember a few years ago (ok, so maybe 10 years ago) Hi-Way 9 came out with these new posters that said “NO and CAN’T are not part of the Hi-Way 9 vocabulary”. Working in customer service, I took that to heart. That quick phrase is even more true now, thanks to the divisions of Hi-Way 9 -Express, Streamline, Deck-way and Load-Way. Daily, questions and requests can be thrown at a Team 9 member that one may not have the answers for, but the question is-what will your response be? Think about it for a second-the world of Hi-Way 9 has expanded so much in the past few years, there isn’t much that CAN’T be done! Things that Team 9 might have avoided before, are completed in the blink of an eye now-intercity deliveries, not a problem (Streamline), lower quantity 25 foot pipes-absolutely (Deck-Way), manufactured truckload to Vancouver-you bet (Load-Way), storage for a few months (Streamline), oh, and that box from Lethbridge to Lloydminster-still completed The Carriers That Care! I have registered for the MS Walk not only for my Dad who has had MS for a number of years now, but also because I want to do something for everyone who lives with this disease. The MS Society is the only national voluntary organization in Canada that supports both MS research and services, and the MS Walk has been a critical part of the MS Society's fundraising efforts for over 20 years. Proceeds from this event and others like it provide support and services to help those living with this disease, their families and caregivers. They also fund research with three primary goals: to find a cause and cure for MS, repair nervous system damage caused by MS and stop MS attacks. By supporting me, you too can make a difference in the life of someone with multiple sclerosis. If you would like to make a pledge, please go to www.mswalks.ca/-mswalk click on 'Alberta', 'Drumheller', 'Team Johnson', then 'Make a Gift'. If you don't have a computer and want to make a pledge, please send it to me at the Drumheller depot with a name and address for a tax receipt (for donations over $20). All cheques to be made out to MS SocietyMS Walk. Thanks to all that have made a pledge and to the overnight (Hi-Way 9 Express). Whether you are a driver, distribution member, maintenance, or administration, the words of “NO or CAN’T” should certainly not be used. Team 9 will find a way...that’s what makes us so good at what we do. If you don’t have the answer, find out for your customer-because Team 9’s service possibilities are endless! ...because I care Sylvia Kirk Yvonne Capson (left) and Coral Martin in Calgary have been doing baking for the last month or so and selling it to fellow Team Members. All of the proceeds from their sales go to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Thank-you ladies, for reminding us “if everyone does a little, it accumulates to much”! I would like to thank everyone who bought a cookie on Feb. 22, and donated to the Heart and Stroke foundation. We raised $400. Great job Hi-Way 9! Thank you, Coral Martyn ALEX SPICER! December 2, 2008 was the day Alex joined Team 9. Arriving from Andover, Hampshire, England with his wife and children, Alex was ready to start a new life in Canada. This plan has taken a clearer step to reality as Alex has now received his Canadian citizenship. Congratulations, Alex!
